What is something that everybody does right now that is common and normal but is actually probably very unhealthy?
Like the Romans used to drink from lead cups. Something like that.

It’s alcohol, right?
Sitting on your ass in an office all day
Drinking from plastic bottles.
Doom scrolling short form video.
My dad does this for hours per day after work and nothing else, and now it seems he's lost all his critical thinking completely and is commonly disregulated, and I'm kind of afraid he'll get more forgetful and erratic, since he's already showing signs of slipping into Alzheimer's.
5 day work week. Always seemed odd to me as a child and now that I'm seeing how broken a lot of retirees in their 50s and 60s are it's pretty clear to me that it's a terrible idea.
Social media is a cancer and allows the worst of society a platform.
I think that advertising is much more harmful than commonly thought of
Glitter. Just spreading micro plastics.
Being generally inactive for most of the day, just sitting and reading your phone/computer.
Like other things mentioned, the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle are very well known
Me, sitting on the can, writing this comment: 😶
What are you in for?
About 10".
This is why I have an under the desk bike, so I can pretend I'm not sedentary most of the time (and get 40k steps on stressful days)
What’s a desk bike? And what is the 40k stores meaning?
It's a fit desk, and that was supposed to be steps. I normally get around 15-20k/day.
Use AI
Being on our phones constantly.
Using AI. Aside from all its ethical, environmental, and legal issues, I've been shocked to see the cognitive decline in folks using AI regularly. Not only do they forget how to do things like write on their own or do Internet searches by themselves, they even lose higher skills they've spent years acquiring.
Was talking with a developer the other day, and he said he'd almost had a panic attack recently when trying to do something during a recent outage when he was trying to code something relatively simple and couldn't even think about where to begin. He said he'd cut back after that, but honestly not sure he will. Every frequent AI user I know seems to be on a junkie trajectory and unable to cope when their supply gets interrupted.
What irritates the ever loving crap out of me is that all the search engines have gotten so bad that you have to use AI to get the answers now... And..! AI scrapers are so hard on bandwidth and servers housing that all the old how-to tech blogs by actual smart people have packed their bags and left. I used to find loads of great self hosting guides by doing a Google search for "Proxmox npm setup guide" and clicking one of the top three results. Now: sponsored, slop, slop, shilling paid product, old Reddit post, etc.
The latest PISA study shows that students who heavily use LLMs are a full year behind their fellows who don't.
Drinking alcohol. Also its not probably, its 100% unhealthy for you and a leading killer, yet its a huge part of almost every society on earth.
100% true. But I’m fine doing some things that are slightly unhealthy to my body for fun. For example, I go to a brewery/bar almost every day (since I’m in a walkable neighborhood), and I’ve been meeting my neighbors and socializing a ton. We’ve started a vinyl collection because we have vinyl nights at breweries. One “healthy” thing about alcohol is that it loosens your inhibitions and allows you to socialize better for many people. It’s also sometimes bad if you’re an angry buzzed person.
I’ve met many of my amazing friends in bars or while drinking. It didn’t negate the damage it’s doing to my body, but it makes me happy and social.
Alcohol has been consumed by humans for thousands of years and in reasonable quantities can actually have health benefits.
What you’re talking about is alcohol to excess, or alcoholism. Alcoholism is a disease and is typically connected to other mental issues.
Maybe better recognition and support for mental health starting earlier would address some of that.
What you're referring to is a wrong interpretation of data.
Maybe source your claims: Stanford or Mayo.
And then I can source mine
Then perhaps we can agree the harms of alcohol are apparent but the benefits are disputed.
Edit: at least I learned something I hadn’t known before because of your comment so thanks for that.
The study found that people who drank a little had, on average, better health than those that abstained entirely. The study failed to mention that a notable portion of those that abstain were abstaining due to health reasons. As in, their health was already bad and was the reason they chose not (or were not allowed) to drink. But, of course, the alcohol industry ran with the first part and has been pushing it ever since. Once you reduce the abstinent group to only those freely abstaining, the average health for the dry subjects is back in the lead.
Reading comprehension not high on your list of skills, is it?

Better answer: we've been doing it so long that it's just kinda part of human existence. It's not great for you but I've also had sex with a fair amount of guys that keep their hands on their dick while watching women that don't even look human so much they they've busted their nerve endings and struggle to cum in a real vagina. Doesn't mean masturbation or porn is good or bad for you but both are sure as hell things humans have been doing for millennia. Humans also really love to gamble, eat fast food, and get on social media. Stop shitting on the behaviors of the human individual, guillotine the 1%, prevent corporations from owning real estate, tax any individuals' third property at 100% annually and exponentially for every property more than that, make it illegal to work without minimum wage even as punishment for a crime, and remind the 5% that it's their job to pay for bread, circuses, and thirdspaces. That's 90% of modern problems fixed right there.
It also changes your personality for the worse if consumed regularly, not only when you're intoxicated but also when you're sober, since the time every adult had to reflect about their day (usually late at night when the day is over) and make adjustments not to stray too far from the path of righteousness, they were drinking and indulging their hedonism instead of maturing. But (rant? incoming) telling the average Westerner they have a moral responsibility to themselves and society is akin to an insult or just very confusing so you kinda have to mention things like cirrhosis else they won't stop.
Wow, I thought I knew what insufferable was before this comment....
Do you disagree with anything I've said or, like every other big alcoholic/hedonistic baby, you just felt called out? It's for your own good. Trust me, I can say all the things you'd love to hear, they're just not good for you and I can't in good conscience spread nonsense when most of you have little besides that (outside of empirical, material facts, ofc) in your minds. 🤷♂️
Your whole point assumes a person can only reflect and grow at the end of the day and in a sober state. It's completely stupid.
Do you think a person who abuses/has made a habit of alcohol only drinks at night here and there? I was just giving an example, it wasn't an exhaustive list... Don't avoid the conclusion, even if you don't change your behaviour, it is what it is.
Do you think a person can't sit and reflect during lunch? Or confront moral truths while having a beer?
I'm not avoiding the conclusion, I'm saying you don't achieve it at all and your entire premise is riddled with assumptions and fallacies. You are far worse for my mental health than a beer, lol.
From another comment they made, they seem to be projecting their time as a "party boy" onto everyone else. It doesn't sound like they ever discussed moral philosophy over drinks which many have done.
You sound like someone who was sheltered to the point that you've never seen a beer. Which is to be expected from someone with the high level of dipshittery present in their username alone lol
I'm gonna make a guess and say my life has had a more diverse set of experiences, both good and bad, than you, lol. I assume we don't wanna share too much though, for security reasons. And my username is just factual. I don't argue as much in my usual social circles because they're not composed of propagandised imperialist fools, hedonistic manchildren and other sorts of nonsense people, and I'm certainly not the only monotheist there... but here, it is a good identifier. 🤷♂️
And still, you didn't disagree. Which is good. You've got a brain, but it's easier to run away from obvious conclusions when they're uncomfortable, and this is a Western online space which means your opinion (morality is subjective and alcohol is good/isn't bad) is in the majority so you're comfortable sharing it. I understand, but do think about what I said in your alone time, regardless of what you post here.
Yeah, I strongly, strongly doubt that. Not just from the way you think and write but from the conclusions you draw about everything you express thoughts about.
Yeah probably because you know how ridiculed and ostracized you'd be in almost any social circle. Referring to normal common human behavior as "hedonistic" and repeatedly babbling about "monotheism" is not only unpopular and weird, no one cares about those topics. News flash: most anyone who is religious is monotheistic. Therefore it's not interesting or notable to bring up EVER. Let alone CONSTANTLY.
I disagree with practically everything you've ever written, that I've seen. Here's one thing we agree on: "religion doesn't need to be used for bad". That's it. Nothing else. I get shit on every time I say it on here but I'll keep saying it, because it's true. But again, NOTHING else you write resonates in any positive way for me whatsoever.
Here's what I glean from what you write.
Well, just to clear any confusion: I was raised Catholic and was a big fan of what Jesus said and did (still am, ofc) but the Paulian/Roman nature of the Frankenstein'd Trinitarian tradition just didn't make sense so I was a very young atheist (arguing in Yahoo answers and everything, lol, the good old days) at the age of 11-12. Then I read more and life changed my circumstances and with it, my perspective, and I became a monotheist at the start of my 30s, like Jesus and those of his time and before him were. I'm a Muslim man today (I just don't take the hadiths seriously because, duh, but idk if this means anything to you, I'm just making sure I'm understood). And I'm not American, we don't have these popular sects or whatever where I'm from.
And no, "my religion" doesn't allow me to judge, my morality and my brain does. The same way you can judge yourself and know when you acted right or not (hopefully), I can do it as well. And when I see "moral relativity" for the sake of hedonism, I gotta say something, for all of our sakes (because I need a reminder as well). I'm not here hating on people because they watch Harry Potter or eat too much candy, lol, I'm talking about something that can only evolve into tragedy, so one must be wary of it and avoid it, because "it feels good!" cannot be a passable moral argument (that's the "Diddy/Epstein argument", after all).
Well, you label yourself as one who believes in nonsense so it's pretty funny claiming others "have little besides [nonsense] in your mind"
Maybe that's just your uninformed view of it.
corpo social media
Isolate themselves to mostly just their phone and the façade world that exists within.
Rampant gambling. I heard that it was also popular in the twilight years of the Roman Empire.
Supreme Court in PA ruled that "skill games" are just slot machines and that they've all got to be removed by mid October. Really hope it goes through but I'm expecting some backdoor measure to invalidate it.
Every other gas station, pizza shop, vape store has crammed these things in. There's some places that went up solely to have games inside. I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the people you see playing them sure don't seem like they're the type who can really afford to gamble. Just preying on the most vulnerable.
You mean those claw games that literally randomly decide whether to grab something or not?
No, video poker games and the like.
I live in PA after moving here from Texas. It's absolutely insane to me how much gambling there is. I recently found Pennsylvania has the 2nd highest gambling revenue after Nevada.
And that's the stuff that's above boards. Every VFW and church has bingo weekly and they just rake in cash.
I just mentioned this in another thread, but when they film in the area around Pittsburgh there's a VFW they like to use for basecamp in the one town. Big TV shows where they're spending millions per episode, but they still have to work around bingo night because they can't outbid the seniors.
Yeah, I'm seeing this and want to scream at the people around me "What are you doing? Don't you see why this is suddenly happening".
It's kind of GTFO-time
I bet it wasnt
You can always tell how shitty a country's economy is by how long the lotto lines are.
or if theres alot of promoting conservative propaganda in the media, you know thier economy is declining. as in anti-immigraiton, anti-trans, anti-islam, dividing by politics. instead of actual problems that never get address like birth rates(and everything associated with it), HCOL, taxes that the rich should pay,,,etc. everything else is a distraction. the most common theme is promoting and going to war, is a useful distraction from internal problems.
I don't mean to get too deep into scripture and whatnot... but "games of chance" are haram for a reason. People should be compensated properly for their efforts and be the recipients and givers of charity, the rest is at least slightly immoral.
perfect, please don't.
I know, I know, online Western spaces are allergic to it cause it has all these weird rules and moral teachings when they just want to be "free", I understand. 🙃
It's moreso the murdering of all non-believers we don't appreciate
Maybe people don't want to be under the threat of murder if they don't follow your fairy tales?
Religion is controlling trash for the weak willed.
Yeah, that's what it is, I'm sure. People do get murdered and prosecuted often for being Godless degenerates... Oh wait, no they don't, not in Europe and European settlements at least, and many other parts of the world (and I'm sure I'm speaking to a Western audience here cause nothing I said would be fought against in my circles, lol). The reason they don't is way more simple: reading and processing Scripture takes time and effort, assimilating basic moral principles and doing good whilst avoiding evil/immorality is counterproductive to getting the bag and going as far as possible in the hedonistic downwards spiral to Hell.
And the reason I'm gathering all these downvotes is because the truth hurts the immature. Who wants to grow up when being a big child is easier? 🤷♂️
I've read all 3 sets of books, so kindly take your ignorant biases and fuck off. Also, if you think religion is required for morality, that says more about your weak willed self needing an external locus of control than anyone else being dumb (and goes to show your accusation is a confession).
Again, the term dumb is not even being mentioned here. Do you think Netanyahu Is dumb? Or Kissinger? Morality is not, usually, about ignorance but about different personal decisions made with the same information available. You don't understand why people do what they do. And no, my morality doesn't come from a book, it's just confirmed by it and many others, because there's only one direction people can act in that is righteous (rape Vs consent, theft Vs earning things... and yes, sobriety Vs intoxication falls into it as well).
Most people who claim to follow a religion don't actually read or comprehend the religious text. Especially true in Islam where the text is in classical Arabic, a language most followers do not speak.
How else could you perceive what I'm saying, considering your background? Try to read what I typed taking my positive intentions into consideration, and keeping in mind you might just be wrong about things.
Assuming everyone who disagrees with you must be stupid is a great way to never question your own beliefs and therefore never learn.
Here, I'll start:
Why do you assume morality must come from scripture, and that people would not try to seek it through other means? And if morality can only come from your religion's scripture, what about the scripture of other religions?
Not stupid, just choosing pleasure over some more important things (or at least arguing for it). And the "moral directional arrows" can be found/understood in the absence of scripture, ofc, but you have to commit to it and have the ability for it and more often than not people are too preoccupied with everything else to have enough mental resources to explore these topics in earnest. And, because of that and God knows it, scripture is useful. Idk about other religions, it's all up in the air and everything must be judged by its own merits. The more moral sense it makes, the more weight does the ideology hold, warranting more and more exploration. At the end of the day, anything outside of the realm of the material (so, not just religious beliefs but all sorts of moral claims) will be argued about, and the ones with enough wisdom seem to agree enough. Some basic Daoist tenets are pretty damn wise, for instance, and so were Diogenes and Marcus Aurelius to their own degrees, it would be silly to disagree with them just because they're "not in my books".
Fair, I'll see about changing my approach if necessary. I don't think they're stupid though, or not just that, I think they're immoral to certain degrees.

Thank you. 👌
It's because Appeal to Authority is a poor argument, especially when other people don't recognize the authority you are appealing to.
"My religion says you can't do X" will never be a compelling argument or recieved well.
My religion just supports it, but I'm sure anyone can see the only direction that alcohol use can go in if done habitually.
"Appeal to Popularity/Appeal to the Masses" is also not a compelling or interesting argument.
If there are good reasons for your religion to say something or for "everyone" to agree with something then state those reasons instead of vaguely implying their existence.
You are being downvoted because your argument is shit, not because people are "allergic to morals".
Maybe because we've seen that most of the horrible societal actions taken since always have been justified using religion.
Whenever it takes place it always goes against the writings and lived examples of the prophets, lol. I know the white man raped West Asia (and most of the world tbh) from the Crusades to today using Jesus as a cover, but Jesus was an anti-imperialist, wandering rabbi who shunned wealth and asked everyone to love their neighbour as much as they love themselves... Ofc, a society of mentally and spiritually deficient individuals will somehow make THAT man their leader (or deity even, jeez) and say they're killing in his name. But is that the fault of the prophet and his message or the fault of every sick, hypocritical, hell bound individual that partook in it?
For God's sake, think just for one moment. How do y'all go through life with such intellectual hangups? 🙄
People who make weird sects of religion their personality are always going to be criticized. You should get used to it.
Idk how that related to my post but I guess it's my fault for casting pearls at pigs. And yes, the amoral and Godless will always come for me, I know. They have to, else they'd have to start reflecting and nobody wants that...
I got a god for gambling, Xochipilli. There's a place for everything, but now everyone can gamble on your phone it's everywhere. It's making Western civilization worse.
Yeah giving everyone access to a personal casino through their phones is a mad idea. I get so angry every time I see Jon Hamm and Kevin Hart shilling for these fuckers; you have a public voice, so use it for good.
I told you about the dangers of silly polytheism! But, fr, we've reached dangerous lows going down the slippery slope of moral relativism. 😞
All the harsh, cancerous chemicals you or your neighbors are pumping into your lawns and the city is using on the public parks you take your kids to.
Believing they're well informed because they absorb just enough information to make a value judgement. The more you train yourself to process the world in that half-assed way, the more you'll run your life like that.

definitely AI, so many people are dependant on it, and it even shows that it degrades peoples education as well. ruinings peoples future career/layoffs too.

Gas stove tops in houses.
we know all the plastic is getting everywhere and bioaccumulating and has wierd interactions with our organic wetwear.
We drive around in car centric hell, sanding our tires down into micro plastics, breathing that shit in and worrying about Tupperware as if that'll save us.
It's wild how much plastic and PFAS there is in hiking and camping gear. You'd think hikers and campers would care more about the environment, but no, having your waterproof gear be as light as possible is more important.
Yep, check the ground on any hiking trail and there's so much plastic trash everywhere. Especially protein bar wrappers
I'm so glad I can't confirm this. The hiking trails by me, and the couple state parks nearby, are all rather clean. It's so nice to wander into the woods and not have to see the trash everywhere.
so, this is harrowing as hell, but I really appreciate your phrasing.
Eating the vast majority of food found in supermarkets.
Aside from raw veggies and plain cuts of meat, about 80% of any food you can buy from any kind of store is classified as “highly processed”, and is therefore complicit in obesity, endocrine disruption, Type 2 diabetes, dementia, and a whole host of health issues that were rare in ancient times.
And yes, pretty much all “healthy” foods are also considered “highly processed”.
Standing at a register for check out. Mostly a US thing from what I've heard. It's wicked bad for you.
Oh and AI sucks ass and you're a bad person if you use it.

Microwaving things in plastic. It’s proven to leach an enormous amount of plastic into your food immediately, but most people still won’t switch to a ceramic or glass plate or bowl to microwave.
Same with using teflon for food. Particles immediately break off into your food. Also using teflon anything increases demand for it and thus increases the amount of PFAS in the soil and water streams.
If you don't drink, don't smoke, don't do hard drugs, don't eat sugar, don't eat excessive red meat, exercise regularly, and drink mostly water, then sure, you can worry about microplastics and PFAS.
But if any of those things aren't true, and you want to make the best use of your time, you'll have a much greater positive impact on your health by prioritizing those other things first.
If you don’t eat sugar you will die lol. It’s how your body gives cells energy.
PFAS on the other hand is a hormone disrupter. On top of giving you cancer it’s probably one of the major reasons for the mental health issues plaguing the world and the current state of tribalism.
This is quite the statement, how do people sleep, fast, or live in the arctic if this was true?
Huh? What do those things have to do with eating anything?
This is why our body can make its own supply of glucose, via gluconeogenesis. So we needn't eat any sugar, at all.
Many plastic bags of veggies here have microwave in bag instructions. It's absolutely horrific and many ppl don't care at all.
One of the first arguments I got into with my wife was over whether we should get glass or plastic Tupperware. She wanted plastic because it is lighter to carry for lunch. I don't like microwaving things in plastic. We got plastic initially, but she destroyed them quickly by heating up sauce in the microwave and now we have glass. The crazy thing is that the nice pyrex Tupperware was only like $15 more than the shitty plastic set.
yea for people who needs to take lunch to work, they would have to buy some expensive glassware , like rarely borosilicate containers
Every office I’ve worked in had bowls and plates there to use. And you put them in the dishwasher when you’re done. Or you can take your own and leave them at your desk.
Also I have found over the years that glass storage containers end up way cheaper over the long run. You never ever have to replace them.
true, we had a snapware costco set from years back at a discount(those "pyrex' like glass, those are sturdier than normal glass but not as good as PYREX. though i do see some brands using borosilicate. i have been using the snapware set.
From talking to a guy I used to know who was studying Neuroscience... Working around Fluorescent lights is apparently insanely harmful..
Having poorly ventilated air in their homes, and in public spaces. Since COVID things have gotten a little better, but measures promoting and maintaining filtered air should be considered the default, not opt-in.
The hoops and “huh?”s I had to go through to get an ERV installed was astonishing. Finally found an installer the next town over and it wasn’t cheap, but worth it every time I look at my indoor air quality monitor.
ERV? Can you tell us about the benefits?

Energy drinks
I wish I could just have the taste without the poison. I don't drink them for the "energy" content.
I found kind of a suitable replacement. The energy drink I like the most is a very cheap lemon-soda energy with sweeteners instead of sugar (like 0,39€ per 330ml can). And instead of buying that, I went for basically the same, ie. lemon soda with zero sugar, just without the caffeine. It's not a 1:1 replacement, sadly - I'm sure I'd like the taste of the energy more - but it's close enough and only slightly more expensive at 0,59€ or 0,69€ for the same size
For me, the best energy drink has always been black coffee. Hot or iced. Everything else is a substitute.
I've never liked the taste and despise the smell of it. But good thing it's working for you. At least you're rid of the sugars
As soon as the leaves change I'm back to tea and coffee, but when it's hot it just isn't refreshing the same way. I'll make iced coffee and even then there's something about it which doesn't quite fit my brain hole. Like I taste coffee, and I get the cozy nesting chemicals, but summer is not cozy. It's hot and uncomfortable. And sunburn. That's when I want a nice cold glass of beer, or chemically flavored, carbonated caffeine drink.
One thing I have started doing is snacking on beans. Apparently each bean has like 6-10mg of caffeine and I think they are tasty.
Pommac comes pretty close as well but it's not exactly cheap and it's probably hard to find outside of the nordic countries. It's like "adult soda" - in graduation parties, weddings and such it's often served as the non-alcohol substitute for sparkling wine.
Sounds interesting. What's it taste like? Reminds me of pear-flavoured soda I'd find in Russian supermarkets around here. Not sure what it's called
Difficult to describe. Remotely similar to Red Bull but less bitter, maybe more bubbly. A sweet sparkling wine/cider-like. Sophisticated. Something a kid would drink if served but would likely never pick themselves.
Dude this I am trying to find a healthier option to rockstar but something in rockstar just fired the good neurons in my brain man wooo
I get it. I’m trying to shake Celsius from my life
Isn't that one of the "healthier" ones? I know it's got mad amounts of caffeine though.
They do appear to be less harmful. But I’m not drinking them in moderation.
Fair enough
What makes energy drinks unhealthy?
sugar (fructose, glucose), neuro-stimulants, cardiovascular stressors, inflammation.
It’s basically kidney stones in a can
Subjective of course, but over time you'll figure it out the hard way if you're predisposed to it 😬
High amounts of caffeine. Increases blood pressure.
Same goes for coffee too.
How dare you
Driving a gas/diesel car, car centric societies are hell for health. I mean car is useful but we should not use it everyday and need it to do everything.
Pollution (from combustion and tire wear) provoke breath illness and weakens our immunity system, have you seen a spike on asthma issues?
Lack of physical exercise make us sick.
Petrol gives cancer, how does it is not written on every gas pump, like for tobacco ?
24 hour news has kinda ruined the country.
Smoking weed. I'm guilty of this myself but by the gods, I have some friends who would come with a 5-pack of joints or a massive bong if they were an action figure
Hear, hear. I've managed to reduce my consumption to a slightly spicy cigarette or two a day, and it certainly helps to some degree with some symptoms of ADHD, but I'm trying to phase it out. It is my only real vice (unless we're counting sugar), idk, I still feel like a more complete person would rawdog life as one should, appreciate it fully and all.
This life is not even close to the one we evolved for, it's OK to get some help if you need it. What that help looks like is up to you, not a societal expectation of 'should', IMO.
If I could upvote you twice, I would. Well said.
Life has been difficult and confusing one way or another forever. We should try not to be dependent on (almost always, entirely optional) crutches, we risk getting used to them and losing the ability to walk without them. And this is not so much of a societal expectation but my own, that I try to run away at times because it's easier (and I'm sure everyone who thinks being an addict/dependent is a morally or developmentally neutral thing has the same internal dialogue and excuses). To a large degree we can think ourselves into happiness and sadness, into stability and madness, can we not think ourselves out of these things as well? It deserves a try, at least, and that's the responsible thing to do.
But regardless of all of that, thanks for your good vibes. 🫶
Fair enough, I sort of thought it might be like that, I was trying to leave room with 'What that help looks like is up to you' while making a larger point for the audience. Be well on your own path.
This seems to be an unpopular view, but I agree. The human brain essentially has no hard limits on what it can think.
Why don't you quote my post here to see what I said about it? And what about the reply that followed? (Btw, it's all the same thread, it's easy!) Does it seem like I'm excusing myself or defending it like everyone else or admitting that I would be a better, more complete person if I phased it out of my system? Come on, man, you gotta be fair when the evidence is in this very same thread, lol.
And whilst the Qur'an only talks about alcohol, I'm personally adding other intoxicants to the list to avoid (I could not, basically, but I know better). And even then, if I have to explain the psychological differences between someone who's drunk and someone who's high, and the actions they might take because of it, then idk, you have never tasted them or seen those who make it a habit, because the difference in harm is obvious. But we don't have to go that far: I personally opened up about my own shortcomings (when I didn't have to) BECAUSE I'm not a "holier than thou" hypocrite, but a person who understands weakness, and unlike those arguing against me, I never defended/rationalised mine. Those who did ITT just lack the courage to admit to their own shortcomings... in a pseudonymous forum, which is frankly kind of pathetic but I understand weakness so I still engage, patiently (if a bit irritated).
Using fabric softener. Enjoy that PFAS!
I mean this is more of an issue with certain types of fabric softeners but not fabric softener itself, you can use straight dialuted vinegar as a fabric softener even
You can also not use one at all, they are useless
I’m pushing 40 and never used fabric softener once in my life, I’m not even sure what the purpose is supposed to be. The fabric is already soft enough for me lol
I've never really paid attention to this, do you happen to know which ingredient is usually the PFAS? Unfortunately they don't just list plastic lol
Whatever the fuck is in makeup.
makeup has so much chemicals in it, that you get it absorbed into your body. unless the companies that make it is sourcing it ethically and stating it was from sustainable non-polluting sources.
It's called Mica, and it's harmless. Looks great in rheostatic fluid form.
A lot of cheap make up has talc but that can’t actually be separated from asbestos so it’s a real issue.
Landlords, especially corpo ones
Not strictly everyone but it's remarkably common across the entire spectrum of society:
Someone thinking their worldview is the only correct one
The unhealthiness comes in the form of stunted intellectual and emotional growth
No one's got it all figured out, and if you think you do, you're almost certainly wrong.
But you are just positing that your worldview, in which I do not possess the singular, objectively correct worldview, is itself the singularly correct worldview, among this particular pair of worldviews.
Nope, I know my worldview isn't complete or objectively correct
This is just a small aspect of it, and I'm open to having my mind changed even on that if someone makes a good enough argument
I'm just pointing out that your worldview, in which no worldview is objectively correct, is in axiomatic conflict with my worldview, in which I am and have always been right about everything. So either I am and have always been right about everything or you are absolutely right about this one thing. Either way it disproves the conjecture that nobody can be absolutely correct about anything.
I'm just spitballing though. Please do not take anything I say seriously.
I could be right about this one thing without being correct about something else though, this one view does not comprise my entire worldview, so my point remains consistent.
some definitely have it more figured oit than others, though
On the other hand, it can also be incredibly damaging to think that there is no such thing as an incorrect view, or that people don't hold them.
To be clear my point is basically all worldviews are at least a bit incorrect in varying amounts.
Sometimes just via oversimplification, sometimes blinkered by their own experience, sometimes naive ignorance, sometimes just outright craziness or malice.
The world is an overly complex place and humans aren't really equipped to deal with the sheer amount of information required to come close to having any semblance of a "correct" world view
Agreed. I wish it was easier to spread understanding once you have cultivated it yourself-- it's hard work and it's often underappreciated, even by people interested in learning about the world.
The online outrage culture seems extremely exhausing from the outside. It's like some people just want to look for reasons to get mad about.
All comments are intact on my end, i.e. on Lemmy.world, except for two deleted by the author. Check for yourself (in a browser). The one by [email protected] is a joke written that way by the commenter.
Some of the people running Piefed are known to be rather crazy.
P.S. That said, I opened the post on Piefed, and everything is also there. OP is just butthurt that their comment got downvoted.
I'm guilty of it but browsing social media. The algorithms are intentionally designed to keep you addicted and engaged and all fall for it.
A lot of people think one lives to work not working to live. So many people flexing they work 80 hours a week but by the time they retire, all the savings and pensions go to medication and elderly care.

Consuming sugar.

Breathe. I live in coal fired power plant country, I will have a lower life expectancy because of what I'm breathing in.
Eating fruits and vegetables without rinsing off the pesticides and herbicides.
Pesticides. We're essentially giving some people horrible diseases so that we can sustain a higher population.
What horrible diseases? I was always under the impression pesticides were like microplastics and forever chemicals… not ideal but also not directly killing you
many do genuinely get harmed during the production transport, handling and application of pesticides and/or herbicides and others due to exposure to high concentrations
the fuss you see over pesticides on your food is overblown, but in the "land of free", a compound does not need to goal though any evaluation for safety (human safeyy and enviromental safety) if they are not already in a family of banned compounds, and does need to go through evaluation of effectiveness to be used for such purposes
this applies not just to farming but to also subproduct dumping of chemical industries, Du Pont when making Teflon was dumping highly toxic compounds that after they were banned rhey simply switched to a near identical one and kept doing it many times
Things that could be harmful but we don't know for sure yet?
Possibly porn. Currently we really lack research on porn's effect on people. Whoever tells you confidently it's normal or degenerate is a liar. No one knows. We are just running a society-wide experiment in real time.

Processed food.
Highly processed food, that is. It's the industrial process making it high in fats, sugars, and low in nutrients. Processing food is essentially what cooking is.
I feel like the obvious one is vaping.
Less obvious is, I think, e-bikes/scooters. I think the effect of walking less and driving more will be compounded even more with an increase in micromobility devices.
Can you expand on how ebikes would be "unhealthy"? I get what you're saying about less walking...but aren't most people using these as an alternative to taking a car? So it seems equivocal to car usage to me.
I guess I’m imagining a Wall-E type situation. As the technology continues to advance humanity could, over time, become over reliant on it.
Similar to the impact of the rise of the car in America over the last 100 years, but on an even greater scale due to the pervasiveness of technology.
I think you're underestimating ebikes and scooters - they aren't particularly convenient for short distances as you still have to find space for them at either end, but excel at medium distances that are currently done by car, so replace driving far more than they do walking. On top of that, balancing on them engages a lot of muscles, so while they're not as healthy as walking or using a pedal bike, they provide infinitely more exercise than sitting in a car.
I think you’re underestimating humanity and where the technology may evolve too.
Like OPs example, the Romans thought lead cups were fine but how many 100s of years later do we balk at that because of what we know now.
I wasn’t referring to this exact moment but taking the long view of potential outcomes.
From a much more anecdotal perspective, I regular walk my dogs at a dog park with a bike trail alongside. The number of throttle controlled? e-bikes has gone up and pedal bikes have gone down. It also seems like 1 in 4 or 5 are tricycle types.

Everything people do can be considered "unhealthy". It's just a matter of how much.
So number one on my list is "remove comments in a random harmless and apolitical discussion without explanation"
I can still see all the comments, I think. Haven’t seen any “removed” thing. However, just realize that Lemmy is very, very similar to Reddit but then with people who are more into technology. So the moderators behaviors are still exactly the same.
Screenshot? Like a few others mentioned, I'm seeing everything on my client with no removals.

Thank you for the addition, I will proceed to block the community? group?

Women delaying having child to their mid 30s or even later. It just happens that delaying it so far increases all sorts of health risks on top of fertility issues.
Gooning.
In moderation it's quite healthy though. It's porn addiction that hurts people.
Masturbation is healthy.
Gooning is masturbating without moderation. It's essentially edging forever. Did y'all forget what it actually fucking means?
It's a meme word made up by popular consensus over the course of like a week, there is no agreed "actual" meaning lmao

I think that reading is unhealthy. The act of focusing your attention upon text and thoughts like that, for hours. It's like a mind-altering drug. No, I'm not talking about the knowledge gained. Just the "psychic act" of it. It's good too, but it's also unhealthy.
Ummmmmmm
You think human imagination is bad for humans? That’s what the “psychic act” of reading is, it’s just your imagination
Yes, I think that human imagination is bad. you got me
Shouldn't we see negative effects pop up in studies that compare readers to non-readers? Non-readers probably do interact with a bit more text nowadays, but AFAIK reading seems to have mostly positive effects.
the moderator removed my reply. do you believe that shit?
No because it's not gone lmao
Not if it's subtle and common. People generally only notice the obvious.
That might be true in the short term, but we've had books and avid readers for centuries, and during this time we've seen positive effects. So if there are any negative effects, they must be so tiny that they're neither noticeable nor measurable.
Is this the comment you claim got removed? Maybe read up on the issues piefed seems to have.
no, this comment did not get removed. only top level ones, only unpopular ones
okay I didn't know that about piefed. I suppose the other guys who got removed were on piefed too.
but it's suspiciously only top level comments that got removed. and only spicey unpopular ones.
but yes, stranger coincidences have happened. I will abridge statement.
Is this the comment you claim got removed in the post edit?
yes. and there are half a dozen others by other people too.
What type of reading? Because the written word is the only reason humanity could progress at all as a society and pass information between generations… oral tradition is great and all, but not so great for objectively recording the way to create a steam engine or an aeroplane or a speed limit sign. I feel like maybe you missed some details in your opinion, otherwise this is a really crazy take
Return to monke
The kind of reading where you focus your attention for a long time on texts and thoughts.
Yes, reading has good things about it and also bad things about it. That's something that happens sometimes.
And yes, my opinion differs from the popular one, not to mention 100 years of pro-reading propaganda. That is also something that happens sometimes. sometimes people have ideas that conflict with the ideas of everyone else. if they make a bunch of money we call them geniuses, if they don't then we call them crazy.
So you're ok with like, reading Elden Ring stat pages? E.g. 16 Vigor? Or are videogames also unhealthy due to the focus requirement? Just trying to figure out the shape of your opinion here
By reading I mean the common thing : focusing your attention upon the words on the page and the thoughts they evoke in your mind and so on. The more intensely and more prolongedly you do it, the more intense the negative effects.
It gets you stuck in your head. You tend to stay there. Do it everyday and being stuck in your head becomes normal life for you and you forget there was anything else.
Ah yep I think I get what you mean now. You're talking about too much introspection right? Which can lead to rumination, depression, and anxiety. I agree that too much navel-gazing isn't healthy, but none at all isn't healthy either. You ideally want a balance where you're neither avoiding dealing with your deep inner problems, nor getting stuck endlessly self-analysing in a loop. At some point you need to go and actually live your life.
I'm not sure reading really has anything to do with it though; other than being a quiet activity that might promote introspection. If anything it might distract you from it. As someone with a fatigue condition, I was at my worst mentally when I was stuck in bed for hours every day, with nothing to do but stare at the ceiling and think. Just completely alone with my thoughts. Not enough energy to distract myself at all.
Personally, I feel like 5% of people are overly introspective to the point of causing symptoms, 0.1% has a healthy balance, and the other 94.9% is the other extreme, and have never once even stopped to reflect in their entire lives; terrified of their own thoughts and feelings. Which is unhealthy in it's own way. Repressed issues tend to bubble up in unexpected paths (e.g. bad habits, addictions, behavioural issues)
"A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts." - Alan Watts
Is this ragebait? I wish it got removed lmao
eating animal flesh and excretions, my hope of hopes is that future generations look back at our treatment of other animals in abject horror.
Consumption of animal meat has been done by humans for over 2 million years and there is nothing wrong with it.
I agree that intensive animal farming is bad and humans need to reduce their meat consumption to be more in harmony with nature but it’s not inherently bad.
The former does not imply the latter.
Cooking is a great example - eating cooked food might be the defining feature that seperated homo from other primates, and yet all cooked food is much more carcinogenic than raw.
Just because we literally evolved to do something and have been doing it for millions of years doesn't mean there are no drawbacks, or that it doing it won't kill us.
it does. it doesnt conclusively prove it, but it is evidence toward it.
the king is here, we can finally have it our way!
disengage
maybe a different name would make more sense for all the feverish excuses being made for the status quo?
Missed the part where I said no drawbacks.
Missed this too, apparently.
Are you making the argument that, in the future, eating meat will be determined to be unhealthy even though, as you put it, “we literally evolved to do” it?
Or perhaps there’s nothing wrong with eating meat, in and of itself, but consumption at the current scale is unhealthy? In no small part due to the potential for advanced viruses and illnesses created by jamming a bunch of animals together in confined spaces .
To me "there is nothing wrong with it" implies there are no negatives, so no drawbacks, no chance it might kill us, etc.
Really? To you “there is nothing wrong with it" implies no negatives? None at all?
Are you a Sith? Do you deal only in absolutes?
If you were overhearing a conversation and person A tells person B, “sometimes I do 70 in a 65 zone to keep up with traffic”
And person B says, “there’s nothing wrong with it”
you’d have to chime in and let them know “exceeding the speed limit significantly increases the likelihood of a collision and the severity of injuries in an accident” because they just implied there are no negatives to speeding?
JFC, defensive much?
Not particularly. I do question nonsense statements though.
Uh... yes?
Then I’d imagine you struggle daily with the English language.
Because we've always done it makes it okay? We have burned witches for so long, why did we stop? People held animals and ate them when needed, eating them was a luxory or a necessity. We torture animals in the most horrific ways possible and destroy the planet doing so. Everyone with more than two braincells knows it's wrong and unnecessary. We don't kill animals because we need it, we throw away half the animals we torture because we can.
Future generations, if they even exist will absolutely look back on us and wonder what the fuck was wrong with us and why we treated pigs so bad that they eat their own feet or smashed their skulls in because they were scared in their little gas chamber. I know people who like animals are annoying cunts, but you know what's more annoying? Caring for animals and knowing what we do to them because bacon in kinda good i guess.
okay != healthy, you have moved the conversation from health outcomes to your personal moral context.
Well, YES IT IS.
What were you, raised under a rock or something...?
No, it’s not. Feel free to look up the definition of inherently and argue with the English language though.
Sure-- feel free to be a ghoul upon modern animal husbandry. And imagine if I was a furious vegan saying that to you.
Doofuses like you would be in their crosshairs ad finem dierum... you complete fool.
ESH
No doubt.
I got tired & cranky last night... not a good look.
Happens to the best of us
your response is literally what this thread is about.
So eating meat hasn’t been unhealthy for 2 million+ years but it will become unhealthy all of a sudden?
Or maybe your trying to shoehorn your personal beliefs to fit the question.
The question is basically entirely about personal beliefs
maybe look a bit more into this and come back?
lol, look into what; the ways your comment is nonsense?
Do you believe then that the default state of carnivorous/omnivorous life in the universe is one of immorality, considering it must harm other life to survive? Is the universe itself immoral for forcing the choice on animals between outward harm (murder) or inward harm (starvation)?
I have no problem with sustainable and ethical consumption of animals, but it doesn't exist right now. I think every human on this planet struggled at some point with the cognitive dissonance of farming practices
Excretions..?
Milk!
That's a secretion not an excretion.
Are eggs secreted or excreted
Eggs are more complex than either, but chickens only have the one hole to push things out of, so I'd lean towards saying they are excreted.
That's roughly my logic as well
Good catch. 👍
Fun fact: there's a pho place in town that will sell you straight pork blood to eat. It comes in a bucket with a USDA inspection stamp.
yes! dairy and eggs and all the blood and pus that goes with it. look up somatic cell count to learn more. its disgusting, destructive, unnecessary, and horrifically cruel. edit: here's a link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatic_cell_count
I know animal-farming is beyond cruel and disgusting at this point, but I don't know anything about somatic cell count issues. Oh boy...
good on you for not being afraid of new information, even if it's scary. you can tell by the downvotes people think clicking a little downward arrow will keep the cognitive dissonance away for just a moment longer.
Well, I just upvoted your comment above mine, FWIW. :D
Yeah, I'm a weird one in wanting to walk through facts & reality to get to the other side, no matter how bad the news is. Very little harsh news depresses me anymore, maybe because I know what our endgame will be, approximately. We embarked on this path 10-12Kyrs ago when we made the global power grab upon mass-agriculture. But that's a long story, haha.
That said, loads of things these days make me sad, and there's no question that each day's news nowadays is usually a load of heart-break. So I can certainly understand why most folks want to live in more comfortable reality-bubbles than mine.
(not to sound all pretentious or anything XD)
I appreciate your honesty and candidness, and you don't sound pretentious in the least.
George Michael's message:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goroyZbVdlo
The wikipedia page doesn’t go super in depth, but it seems like somatic cell count is just a measurement of how much infectious schmutz is in milk? Why is this concerning?
how much blood and pus would you like in your diet?
About as much as is left over after the pasteurization and filtration the milk I drink goes through I guess. Is there a safe threshold that all commercial milk rests above?
I've had duck blood soup before. It's pretty good.
As a vegetarian i have to agree. Duck blood and tofu hot pot is spectacularly delicious.
I'm not sure how blood is compatible with vegetarianism.
