DCCC Releases Its First Anti-Trans Ad, Supporting SC Democrat Nancy Lacore

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/49550255

This week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the official campaign arm of House Democrats, has begun running an ad in South Carolina for Nancy Lacore, the Democratic nominee in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. The ad appears to be the first instance of the high-level Democratic organization running an ad targeting transgender people. The 30-second spot, titled “SC-01: That’s Nancy,” went up on YouTube Oct. 19 and began airing yesterday in Charleston and Savannah as “part of the committee’s coordinated spending in key battleground districts.” It features Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie, “a lifelong Republican supporting a Democrat for Congress.” Specifically, it highlights Lacore’s support for a transgender sports ban, with Haynie stating she would “protect girls’ sports,” a statement that a campaign representative confirmed refers to barring transgender girls from girls’ sports.

Here is a link to the DCCC's contact form, so people can let them know what they think of this betrayal. There's also a phone number on the contact form if you prefer to verbally voice your disgust.

Their phone number is (202) 863-1500.

Risking arrest, he paints illicit crosswalks across L.A. ‘We can’t wait any longer’

UCLA law student Jonathan Hale and about 150 volunteers have painted unauthorized crosswalks at dangerous Los Angeles intersections, saying residents cannot wait for city action.

Advocates say traffic deaths rose 56% from 2015 to 2025 as the city’s Vision Zero effort faltered; officials say they maintain or add more than 1,000 crosswalks annually.

Hale, arrested while painting in Westwood before his case was dismissed, wants the city to legalize the work and recommit to Vision Zero. LADOT says it has met its commitments to him.

AI School Hooking Children Up to Heart Monitor in Front of Class While Playing Critiques of Their Work

As part of the bootcamp, students are also required to pass an eyebrow-raising heart rate challenge, in which they’re hooked up to live monitors in front of their classmates and presented with a pre-recorded video of their parents berating them.

“The challenge rule was simple,” one student wrote: “my resting heart rate was 80bpm, and I had to stay within 10 percent of that the whole time. Anything above 88 was a fail.”

It isn’t clear what educational purpose this particular trial was supposed to serve, or what the penalty would be for students who fail the heart rate challenge, or the boot camp overall. At least one student said the eight-week hazing period is meant to “prove I deserve to be here,” though Alpha School didn’t comment on Riley’s inquiry.

The American Cheetah Was Not A Cheetah – And Some Of Them Had A Diet Closer To That Of Orcas Than Other Big Cats

If the cheetahs had evolved in lockstep with the pronghorns, this then raised the question of what they were eating in Alaska. At the time, the land would have been filled with a range of other herbivores, including bison, horses, and caribou.

But the data gleaned from the bones show, extraordinarily, that that is not what they were eating.

“They’re not just eating mostly fish,” explains Cassatt-Johnstone. “It seems like they’re eating almost exclusively fish.”

“When we compare our data to published modern data of carnivores that we know eat exclusively aquatic marine resources, we see that they’re sitting in a position right between orcas, which are exclusively fish eaters, and outer island wolves from British Columbia, which are commonly known as sea wolves because they eat almost exclusively fish.”

Why Was This 17th-Century Polish Woman Buried With a Padlock on Her Toe and an Iron Sickle Across Her Neck?

New research suggests that the people who buried the young woman took precautionary measures to stop her from coming back to life and exacting revenge on them

What did these items signify? Researchers led by Dariusz Poliński, an archaeologist at Poland’s Nicolaus Copernicus University, have spent the past four years trying to find an answer, and now, they’ve published their findings in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.

The team’s analysis suggests that locals viewed the woman—now dubbed “Zosia”—as a threat, blaming her for misfortunes such as disease and famine for reasons that still remain unclear. To prevent Zosia from rising from the dead and causing further mayhem, they initially put a lock around her toe, then later returned to the grave to place the sickle over her neck.

10,033 tiny clay cats reenact the Civil War at a Gettysburg museum

The dioramas are all made with a one-to-one ratio. This means that each model cat soldier represents one soldier during the real battle, not 10 or 50. All of the dioramas are also all made to scale. If a hill looks like it would have been a monster to climb while dodging cannon fire and bullets, it was.

12 Palestinian tatreez (embroidery) patterns, and a few beautiful examples

Courtesy of the Craft Contemporary Museum. Each pattern has the name in Arabic and the area(s) of Palestine they’re traditionally from or most commonly found. They often feature locally important plants and animals. These are typically worked in cross stitch (fallaḥi, roughly meaning ‘villager’s stitch’), but can also be done in satin stitch. Tatreez is associated with weddings, and the garments made for the new bride are intended to last her entire life and also become heirlooms. Here are a few lovely pieces that were on display:

And my scans of the paper copies that were available. Sorry my scanner struggled with this, I did my best to compensate and the grid should hopefully be legible:
