A dish's ingredient list alone should (almost) never impact one's enjoyment of it

Basically the post title. If you are going to say you do not like something because it contains some ingredient you don't like, without trying it, you probably would benefit by having a more open mind about food and you're doing life wrong.

Obviously, valid exceptions would be if you're allergic/sensitive to an ingredient. And there may be some other valid exceptions outside of that, but in general, I think this is true.

What's an example of what I mean? I HATE eggs generally, I almost always strongly dislike their texture as a dish unto themselves. They smell like sulphur, they're often oozing liquid or they are are plasticky/spongey. What's that you say? I just haven't had them made the right way? Au contraire, because therein lies my point. I have had eggs made the right way. Or rather, not the eggs themselves, but the structural or textural qualities they add to a dish. I normally don't like omelets because of this egg aversion, but if an omelet is well made by my standards, the egg is just the wrapper. A thin, barely noticeable container in which to stuff other delicious ingredients. I absolutely do not care that omelets contain eggs, I care that they taste good, and don't make me notice the qualities I hate about eggs. I also of course enjoy around a bazillion other breads and desserts made using eggs.

I recently posted here about my hate for crunchy vegetables and heard that my opinion is garbage from many users. Ya know what though? I'm not an extremist. If you tell me "oh sorry you wouldn't like this, it has crunchy vegetables in it", you're jumping the gun. Because if I try it (and I likely would), and the crunchy texture does not outweigh the good qualities of the dish, I'm probably not going to dislike it.

I have known plenty of people who literally judge food constantly by what's in it. "Oh falafel is made of chickpeas? BARF I wouldn't like it and I won't try it!!" It doesn't matter to them that they literally may have never guessed that chickpeas are in there if I hadn't mentioned it, now they know and their minds' made up. "But I don't like mushrooms, so I won't try that pizza :(" ... this idea makes me sad. I'm both a slightly picky and very non-picky eater in different ways but I can promise you one thing: if I based my food preferences primarily on the ingredient list, I'd be picky as hell and much less into food. I'd probably be borderline malnourished because I'd have never matured beyond 10 year old me, thinking most foods are "yucky". And that would be sad (and unhealthy).

I'm guessing a lot of users won't admit they judge food by what's in it, but I'm confident that if people were honest about what people actually do, they'd consider this opinion unpopular af. Think about it: I bet a large percentage of you don't like eggplant (or some other specific vegetable) and would refuse to try some new dish because it contains eggplant.

Crunchy vegetables suck

There are some exceptions at times (like pickles), but for the most part, I hate the texture of crunchy vegetables. Particularly onions, broccoli, and cauliflower, but pretty much any veggie, is worse uncooked or undercooked imo. I hate most raw vegetables by themselves or in salads, but undercooked ones may be even worse because I was promised and expecting something cooked. Crunchy peppers or onions ruin a pizza as one example. Under-done carrots and potatoes in a curry, which I had yesterday, is another perfect example.

This may not be a universally unpopular opinion but I definitely feel like I've had a lot of people seem surprised by me not liking raw veggies.

Self-hosted security cameras

Hello, I'm wondering what the consensus is (if there is one) on the best hardware and software (open source very much preferred, runs in Docker is a must) to use for privacy-respecting, self-hosted security cameras. I have always wanted to avoid feeding the surveillance state and have never had a security camera but unfortunately I recently saw evidence of someone trying to break into my home. I searched Lemmy for posts on this topic and only found one from two years ago: https://lemmy.world/post/12726787. I assume things are a bit different now so I'm basically making the same post again as OP. Thanks in advance for any tips anyone may have for me.

PS. My experience level is that I currently run several self-hosted solutions via Docker and have been doing so for a few years. I am not a networking guru but I do understand the basics, and I've setup pihole in the past (but deactivated it due to some false-positive issues). If there's a reason to stand that back up in order to prevent otherwise private cameras from "phoning home", I can do that.

How do you stave off depression?

For me, the only thing that works is spending time with my partner or friends and taking the edge off with cannabis. During the work day, I have felt a lot of despair for a long time. Trump fans and the public's reaction to vaccines and COVID in general lead me to believe that there's just no such thing as peace on a societal level. I'm not sure that ever existed in any way, but I think it used to be incredibly easier to delude yourself into thinking the state of humanity is much better than it is, or at least much better than this.

And I don't think deluding ourselves is even slightly a solution. In fact I think that's a major source of why society is so fucked today. People tuning out and letting shit get worse. Capitalism running wild while most people just shrug their shoulders if forced to address it, but typically never even thinking about it or how things could be better.

We aren't cut out for this shit. The effects of bad news streamed 24/7 like an IV drip has got to be worse for our health than smoking. I suspect I will die 15 years prematurely due to stroke or some other blood pressure related failure.

Another exacerbating factor is vocally negative people. No matter what happens, even if something good happens, there's always someone lurking in comment sections telling everyone how stupid they are if they see anything positive about that news. Some days I really think I need to be a hermit in the woods with no Internet. Because the load of the modern world is just too much to bear.

I've tried therapy and various drugs. Nothing's helped much or for very long. I think about changing careers but that has a lot of risks I'm unsure are worth it. In fact I'm not even sure it would help. Has anyone successfully changed careers and gone from feeling how I describe here to a much healthier state of being? Or have you found anything else that helps? I know hobbies can help, but I'm at the point today where I just have no motivation to get back to mine.

DOJ Lawyer Turned Whistleblower

Interview with formerly decorated lawyer under Trump's first term who is now sounding the alarm about lawlessness at the DOJ at direction of Emil Bove.

Former Justice Department lawyer Erez Reuveni speaks out about the disregard of due process and for the rule of law that he says he witnessed in his final weeks at the Department of Justice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcSHMkyM0aE

This feels somewhat significant. Not the first one to serve and later come out against the Trump administration, but every day things seem to escalate further toward absolute authoritarianism and thus it is scarier than ever for whistleblowers to go public.

Thanks @[email protected] for bringing this to my attention in a comment elsewhere in this community.

Profile karma

I know that karma is a contentious issue on Lemmy, but I like having the feature where it is displayed on user profiles. For trolls especially, it helps to know if they should be ignored or not, like if they have -3000 karma for example. I have always noticed karma appearing in boost when viewing a user's profile, but today after logging out and back in, I noticed I no longer have that feature. Karma is no longer shown on profiles for me.

It doesn't seem like anyone else is having the issue and the recent changelog entries don't mention it. Did I inadvertently change a setting and now I just can't find that setting to change it back?
