The Afghan family who are safe at last and full of hope, thanks to an Australia Pauline Hanson will never know | Australian immigration and asylum | The Guardian

Many times we lost hope. Many times we thought nobody cared. Many times we wondered if our story would simply disappear among thousands of other stories.

But then something extraordinary happened. People we had never met decided that our lives mattered. People here in Apollo Bay wrote letters, made phone calls, spoke to politicians, contacted journalists, shared our story, and refused to give up.

They did not help us because they knew us. They helped us because they believed that every human life has value. That kindness changed everything.

Today, my children can go to school safely. They can dream about their future. They can sleep without fear.

in a country currently enthralled by ONP toxicity, that's both an uplifting story and a sad story at the same time.

Seven Australians are dying each day from drug overdose in worst year on record, researchers say - ABC News

Australia recorded its deadliest year on record for drug overdoses, according to a new analysis, with an average of seven deaths per day.

In a preview of the Penington Institute's annual overdose report, there were nearly 2,600 overdose fatalities in 2024.

For the first time ever, people in the 50-59 age group recorded the highest number of unintentional overdose deaths, up from 448 fatalities in 2023 to 533 in 2024.

"The majority of them are men, the majority of them are middle-aged," Scientia Professor Ritter said.

Everyone thinks the RBA is done. They’re wrong

paywalled version

https://www.afr.com/policy/economy/everyone-thinks-the-rba-is-done-they-re-wrong-20260614-p606om

The cash rate needs to rise to at least 5 per cent to have any chance of sustainably returning inflation to target. If it’s not 5 per cent, then it’s something closer to 6 per cent.

The inability to contain inflation over the past two years should have taught the RBA that the real cash rate needs to be much closer to our potential growth rate, which we know is 2 per cent annual economic growth.

I disagree with the premise of the headline but I agree with the article

(to clarify that's with the orthodoxy of which we live , which i disagree with completely as in anyway sane )

Delhi heatwave: Why the Indian capital feels hotter than what temperatures show

For several weeks now, the Indian capital, Delhi, has been battling a severe heatwave, with temperatures routinely rising above 40C. The real feel, the weather apps helpfully tell us, is always a few degrees higher. But how hot do you feel when you hit the streets?

On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded the maximum day temperature at 43.5C in the capital.

Tire Pollution May Threaten Human Health, Study Finds

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/38733771

Tiny particles of rubber cast off by car tires, which have long been known to harm wildlife, may also pose a risk to humans, according to a new study.

The chemical 6PPD, which is added to tires to prevent cracking, transforms when exposed to ozone pollution, which arises from car exhaust. One compound formed from this process, 6PPD-quinone, has been implicated in the deaths of spawning coho salmon in the Pacific Northwest. For decades, heavy rains have led to surges in salmon deaths as polluted stormwater washed into urban waterways.

The new study finds that many of the other chemicals derived from tire wear may pose a threat to humans when inhaled.

Why the world's most ambitious coal phase‑out deal has failed, and what it means for climate finance

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/38733765

Indonesia's so-called Just Energy Transition Partnership, or Jet-P, was launched at a G20 summit in Bali in 2022. Similar deals have been struck with South Africa, Vietnam and Senegal. They are widely regarded as the most ambitious attempt at getting international climate finance to end coal use in populous, coal-dependent middle-income countries.

The UK government once touted the Jet-Ps as "a template on how to support just transition around the world." This refers to efforts to ensure that the phase-out of fossil fuels and phase-in of low-carbon technologies is fair, inclusive and reflects the demands of workers and affected communities.

But if this approach cannot retire a single plant in Indonesia, the world's fourth largest coal consumer, there is reason to question whether the model itself works.

Well, complete failure would tend to indicate it doesn't work.

I don't know enough about it to make an informed scathing comment like I do with the stupidity of BECCS, NetZero, Hydrogen, biofuels and Nuclear but someone else may be able to shed more light ?

Julia de los Angeles and Angie Mead King inspire women and girls to take up motorsport in the Philippines

Over the last few years Formula 1 has evolved from a niche fanbase into surging viewership in the Philippines, driven by Netflix's docuseries Drive to Survive.

But in the middle of this male-dominated industry the Philippine motorsport scene is seeing a major shift: women are moving from being spectators to pursuing seats as drivers or jobs as engineers or mechanics.

Backlash is often swift when authorities try to plan retreat from the coast. There’s a better way

Climate change is exacerbating rainfall, flooding and sea-level rises in coastal and low lying areas. During the past few years, disastrous floods have swept through Lismore in New South Wales, Northern Queensland, and the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. Large waves have pounded beaches, causing erosion in Byron Bay and Wamberal Beach in NSW and Lancelin, Western Australia.

>With climate change likely to accelerate extreme weather in Australia, planned or managed retreat – moving people and infrastructure away from these areas – will grow only more important.

Voter solutions seems to be, vote ONP and ignore it ?

Here's ONP Senator Malcom Roberts

Kerbside parking is great for drivers – but terrible for everyone else. Could we get rid of it?

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/38718488

Australia actually has an oversupply of parking, both on streets and in parking lots. Across five of the state capitals, most postcodes have more on-street spaces than there are registered cars.

That’s great for drivers, given most on-street parking outside the inner city is free and has no time limit. Many spaces are used by locals with a driveway or garage who find it more convenient to park on the street.

The problem is, abundant street parking comes at a cost. Streets jammed with parked cars look bad – and remove space for bikes, e-bikes and scooters.

Plastic food and drink packaging ‘world’s most common coastal litter’

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/38145063

Global study finds wrappers, bottles and lids on shorelines of 93% of countries analysed as UN talks to tackle issue in turmoil

He said he was not surprised to see lots of single-use plastics in the data, but the fact those items turned up so consistently along coastlines across all seven continents had taken him aback.
