The Þ dude is alright and Lemmy users have an irrational hatred for slightly-special characters. I wonder how many people are using automation to downvote every comment of his that contains a Þ, it's way too consistent accross instances and communities to be entirely organic.

Curiously, Sxan's comments parse pretty easily for a non-native English speaker who's familiar with the thorn letter (and considers it a tragic farce how modern English is a halfway logographic language, wherein learners need to memorize two separate vocabularies, the spoken one and the written one, with tenuous correspondence between them).
Read more of their comments until you get smarter and it stops hurting. Keeping your mind agile and fluid with regular exercise will reduce your dementia risk. Next time you see Sxan, tell them thanks for warding off dementia for you.

Sure, this won't improve your brain as much as learning a whole new language like Yolngu, but it'll improve your mental fluidity a little bit. It's a bite sized language lesson.
But it's not a lesson if it doesn't explain itself. It just turns their comment into a puzzle that they know most people won't know how to read.
It's gate keeping in the same way as intentionally using technical jargon when common parlance would suffice. It's a bit insufferable.

I supported him when he said it was to poison AI. Then someone proved to him in a thread it did nothing to poison AI. He didn't reply and then showed up a few days later still doing it.
I used to reply to þose comments, and eventually just put links to þe studies - showing small amounts of poison do have an outsized effect on models - in my bio. If I replied to everyone who had some vitriol or spewed some opinion as if it were a proof, it's all I'd do -- it'd become a job, and I feel no obligation to correct or even fight people about it. Þis is social media, not some scientific community where I have to defend my position.
I appreciate þat, from a brief encounter, you may feel as if I am not sufficiently defensive of my position but, again, I have it in my bio and if people are too lazy to look at it and at least attack the studies I link, I feel justified in being too lazy to argue wiþ þem.

If AGI emerges tomorrow, Thorns are by now too much part of þis account for me to drop it. Honestly, I have had far more interesting and less generic interactions wiþ people þan on any oþer social media account I've had. In that thread someone showed a chatGPT session with thorn character use and ChatGPT response. They proved it didn't work to you.
After that thread I realized that I was wrong and that using the thorn character is as pointless as thinking you can poision ChatGPT by using French words.

It's a proper name, like Thomas, which I don't mangle out of respect. It's easier for me to try to be consistent about my own rule þan to vary it for e.g. Thorn, Eth, Earth, Thanos, North.

I don't believe Þat it does anything against AI, eiÞer. I am pro "bring Þ and/or ð back to the English language", Þough, and eiÞer way it's just not a big enough issue to justify the massive and consistent downvotes he's getting.
As someone who has enough interest in etymology to understand the thorn character, it feels weirdly natural to actually read modern English that uses it. Count me as part of the pro-"bring Þ and/or ð back to the English language" group.
That said, it's not practical to use it at this point because most people would freak out and get upset when they see anything they don't understand, and most people (at least in the U.S.) can barely read at a level comparable to younger children.
I understand them (and even if I didn't I could work it out from context), but it absolutely wrecks my reading speed, since I basically have to sound it out in my head instead of just reading the word. I hate SMS-style phonetic abbreviations for the same reason.
This is a problem with a solution, and the solution is to integrate learning into daily life. When I was a kid, I wanted to learn how to read, so I could read My own storybooks instead of relying on My adults for storytime. These days, kids want to learn to read so they can post on social media. That's good.
Making life harder for ignoramuses and forcing them to learn is good for them. Complying with their desire to remain ignorant is bad for them.
Look, I have looked up what those characters mean every time these comments come up, but no one else cares or uses them. Including me. So I forget what they are, because it's not important to me. Then it comes up again in a comment on here and nowhere else and I just can't be fucked to bother looking it up again. So I don't read those comments anymore.

This is likely the most common way people intereract with your comments. So if you want to turn every interaction into either a fight over those characters or only have it read by other etymology autists then sure, Have at it. I, however, want to be understood when I talk. It bothers me when people don't understand me. To me the point of language is to get ideas across through any means necessary. By that standard I really don't see the point in putting any effort to bringing these characters back. They do not help language to be better understood or clearer and that's all I care about.
And in my experience, trying to force changes like that through use will just get tiring and not actually change anyone else. This kind of change in language would take tremendous effort. Even if I thought there was a point to it, I would call it a pipe dream to make it standard.
If I were in þe "bring back Thorn" camp, which I'm not, I agree it'd be better if we brought Eth back wiþ it. Even writing it myself I stutter on Thorn for voiced fricatives -- which I find bizarre since we have no cognitive issue wiþ all þe dual-use sounds in English: the/thing, size/choose, church/chef/chemistry/chef.
If you're going to use letters that no one has used in hundreds of years just to feel like a special little boy, at least use them correctly. Thorn is unvoiced th, as in thorn. Eth is voiced th, as in either.

Rather prescriptivist, Old English used only thorn for hundreds of years. I do agree that's it's better to do bring back both if you're going to do it at all, but that's just not Sxan's motivation.
I started squinting real hard at the tesseract dev (before the controversy) when I saw a tesseract patch note that said something about getting rid of Þ (in some form, idr exactly, just that there was no mention of an option to turn it off). I think it's nice to have a few instantly-recognizable posters in the community, esp. when what they're doing is harmless.

I've seen it mentioned that he apparently also had a blacklist of users, namely those who criticized him. But the linked post about it had an image as the central piece of content, which image was giving me 404 by the time I gotten to it — so can't confirm if that's really true.
I think it's annoying but I just don't read their comments and move on. Same with people who use baby talk or overly refer to themselves in third person. It's not for me and I know I'm not gonna enjoy reading it, but yeah they're harmless.

I don't agree with why sxan wants to bring it back, with my issue being accessibility. Screen readers, people with dyslexia, and whatnot. It does nothing to better our communication with each other.
But they're a part of our community and respect that as their quirk. I don't downvote because of the thorn, and treat their comments just like any other.

Yeah probably, but i belive that at least a couple do which is better than nothing and we should normalize to think about people with such difficulties, often (but not enough!) we think about disabled people but forget about neurodivergences and such in general, i spread this meme everytime i see Sxan in the comments and hope someone follow my example

One thing that my brain is bothered by for whatever reason is that he uses the same character for both voiced and unvoiced forms of "th". That may very well be the proper usage, but for some reason my brain doesn't like it! Dunno why!
It's probably consistent with historic English usage, but the two places that still officially use it (þ and ð in Icelandic, ð in IPA (which uses a different character in place of þ) do it like ðat so we might as well learn from ðem! Also, Þ is a capital letter, most English words would use the lower case þ.
But boþ of ðose only matter if you do it for spelling reform reasons, which is not Sxan's stated goal.

IMO þ is preferable because it's consistent with Icelandic and somewhat consistent with Old English (OE used only þ for a long time) and many oðer old Germanic languages. Is there a language ðat's actually used today ðat uses theta?

IMO it's a valid question, considering the large amount of differences between Ancient Greek and Modern Greek. I don't know many specifics about Modern Greek, for all I know they could have completely dropped the sound like many other languages did. The existence of theta in Ancient Greek tells us about as much about modern Greek as the existence of the runic letter that þ is based on tells us about modern Germanic languages.

It's because it's annoying af to read and it's never gonna gain enough traction to justify it.
At this point it just feels like it's a way to differentiate themselves from everyone else which is valid, be who you want to be, but sometimes that comes with consequences and you can't really complain about it when you're the one deliberately going out of your way to do it.

You’re correct about the first part. The intent was for the devil’s part to be technically correct, but discordant and forgettable.
The call and response was because they were references to other famous tunes. Fire On The Mountain was an old folk tune. House Of The Rising Sun was an old folk tune. Etc… They were meant to be familiar and melodic snippets that people from his area would recognize, to contrast the devil’s forgettable solo.

On a technical level sure, but it was a fiddle contest not a technical contest. Johnny is the better fiddler since he knows the music the people like and dance to (a bunch of the lyrics are references to other songs). If the devil played his music to a barn full of dancers, the whole event would likely crumble.

Something like "Toilet paper orientation doesn't matter" is far more likely to be upvoted by somebody who disagrees with it than "Everything bad that happens to your children is your fault because you knew it was a possibility and had them anyway".
Human euthanasia should be legalized and normalized, both medically assisted suicide and euthanasia when the person is suffering but unable to make decisions for themselves. If it's an act of mercy to euthanize a pet who is suffering, then we should be able to have the same compassion for our fellow humans.

Dogs suck. I don't like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisence. They can be fun for brief periods, but they're way more work and hassle than they're worth. My brother is thinking of getting a big dog and I hope he doesn't because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can't believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their dogs more than their kids. I can't believe people consider themselves their pet's "parent". I can't believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of kids or judgemental of "ill-mannered" and neurodiverse kids, yet will happily say "it is never a dog's" fault, no matter how "bad" the dog is.
Cats can sometimes be ok, if they're not noisy and don't shed too much. But generally having animals in the house isn't great at all.

Creating ANY kind of smoke should be banned in public. By public I don't mean just bus stops and trains and shit. Literally anywhere but maybe your house. And smoking indoors is even more disgusting. Smoking in your garden? Is there anyone living within ~20 feet? Forbidden. Smoke machines on concerts may have an exemption.

I don't get the downvote, it's in fact an interesting question. However, sorry, I'm keeping it unpopular: healthy or not (research has shown it has antimicrobial effects), it's still an annoyance for everyone else.
I can walk around with a water pistol filled with vitamin water, shooting people in the face. Just because it contains vitamins (IT'S GOT ELECTROLYTES!) it doesn't magically make it non-annoying.
I have literally never met anyone who was annoyed by the smoke from smoking ceremonies. I've seen headlines in the news about racist people angry that smoking ceremonies were held at football games, but that was because the white people objected to the political meaning of the ceremony. Smoking ceremonies are held at special events, advertised ahead of time, and I've never seen the smoke go beyond the boundaries of the event to a visible degree. I've attended and been blessed at two smoking ceremonies, and they were both really positive experiences.

I'm going back to school as an elder millennial and my God, some of the craziness I've heard. A buddy teaches a film theory course a lot of kids use to satisfy early arts requirements at universities and he quickly realized if he didn't show the movie in class, 2/3 of the class wouldn't watch it despite being available through the school website. So, essentially, these kids (or their parents) are paying hundreds of dollars to watch movies instead of engaging.
The degree for which I'm going back recommends only 4 courses a tern with no work.I knew engineers who rocked 6 or 7, worked and were party animals.
Every advisor with whom I've spoke has basically said "look, if you're going to treat it as an adult with adult work habits, you can handle 5 courses without trouble." But they have all these disclaimers because kids and their parents go nuts when Johnny, who was just streaming hockey highlights all class somehow didn't get a good grade.

Linux sucks more than the users want to admit and it's fans are the worst.
If you have to learn to program stuff to fix something in your OS, then it's not a good OS. This isn't the case for most modern Linux, but there's many examples of just having to learn all sorts of crap just to make it functional. With the other two mainstream OS they are plug and play. Lately they have done shitty choices with AI and everything so that's not as much of the case, but at least there you don't have to go in and fix the code to make something functional.
If Linux was that great, you wouldn't have to do any of that. I find it's a weird parallel to owning a crown vic, where you have to pile sandbags in the back so it'll drive in literally any snow, and then when you talk about it people say it's a skill issue because they are hardcore fans of a dumb cop car. If you have to do something special to make something functional, that's not a feature, that's a bug.
And then, ye gods, the Linux fans. I know of someone who was berated for almost an hour over not using Linux. The person getting yelled at was like, 7. They are the smug Internet atheists of the tech world. They won't shut up about Linux. Their solution to anyone looking up how to fix something with their computer is to uninstall everything and switch to Linux, even if it's unrelated. If someone has a criticism for Linux they have a meltdown. They feel smug and superior in their choice of OS, euphoric and enlightened with their own intelligence.
That being said I'm probably going to switch to Linux anyway. Because fuck the changes windows made.

Instead of euthanizing one violent or chronically ill or old or otherwise unadoptable animal, you spend your limited space and resources keeping it alive while you turn away a dozen perfectly healthy and well-behaved animals who could have been adopted but were instead let loose on the street or were euthanized elsewhere.
Even euthanizing otherwise adoptable animals is a net positive, because there are more companion animals in need of homes than there are homes willing and able to take them in.
As long as it's legal to make your animals make more animals, culling their populations will remain an ecological necessity. Which brings me to unpopular opinion #2: it should be straight up flat out illegal to own a pet that isn't spayed or neutered, no exceptions. I don't care if you think your munchkin cat's fucked up tiny legs are cute. The state should be able to seize your animals and have them fixed with or without your consent.
People should be allowed to have and grow all the plants on this planet. All drugs should be allowed without prescription. Prescription should be suggestion not permission.

That "modern" architectural style where you get houses that often have flat roofs, blocky structures, large glass walls and the rest usually white plaster or unpainted wood (idk the name but I think most people have seen it and I see people hating on it more often than not. I dont mean brutalism since what im talking about doesn't usually have unpainted concrete everywhere but it looks maybe related) looks pretty good actually. Not every example sure, but in general I find the aesthetic pleasantly futuristic looking.
I, too, enjoy blocky architecture. Though it's kind of impractical, large glass walls are a large issue in the summer (assuming they're not on the north side) and AFAIK flat roofs have relatively expensive upkeep.
Large glass walls are better applied if they have photogrey technology built in so that when light hits them from one side, they tint. I have only ever seen this in hotel lobbies.

They can be fun for brief periods, but they're way more work and hassle than they're worth. I can't believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their kids more than their dogs. I can't believe people consider themselves their kid's "parent". I enjoy cleaning the gross hair and gunk out from the shower drain, especially after I've moved into a new place. I am easily grossed out, so I find it stomach turning, but it feels so cathartic. The grossness is a part of that, I think. And then you have the immediate satisfaction of things draining much better.

Do you find it really satisfying to "dial in" something? Anything. Maybe dialing in your home espresso shots, calibrating a 3D printer you built or modded, setting up a guitar to get the action and intonation right, getting an old motorcycle's carburetors in sync, iteratively tweaking a recipe to perfection – whatever might scratch that itch for you.
If you're way into that kind of thing (and maybe pretty tech-oriented), you might actually enjoy building AI agent "skills" (basically instruction files for specific tasks). On the first run of a skill, it might get some things wrong. But as you run it through each round of evaluations and improvements, it gets better and better.
LLMs' results are probabilistic, not deterministic. So to build something on AI that actually works well, it needs to be "dialed in". It scratches that kind of itch, for me.

You have me curious. What kind of contradictions?
Like, a lot of their behavior seems to be centered around gaining respect and focusing on having car drivers defer to bikes, while bikes slough off responsibility and behave dangerously.
For example, bike lanes. I, as a person who primarily drives a car, believe that what should happen is that the curb should be extended into the road, and bike lanes put up, on the curb, next to the sidewalk. If the goal is mitigating harm in the event of accident, then placing bikes beyond the curb will be the safest movement, rather than having them be a dedicated lane literally in the road. Having them be, ideally, up on the curb in their own dedicated lane is the safest solution we can come up with. The second, is that if there is no dedicated lane, they should be on the sidewalk not on the street.
We can do the math on collisions. A soft body going under 15 miles per hour with high alertness and high reaction time (a biker) is less likely to collide with another soft body going under 5 miles per hour with high alertness and high reaction time (a pedestrian), and if they do happen to collide, the injury will be very minimal.
But a soft body going under 15 miles per hour colliding with a 2 ton metal machine going 30 mph with lower reaction time (a car) is going to be more likely and lead to far more intense injuries for the biker.
But for some reason bike advocates don't want the safer option, they want to be in the road. They want to be in the road with the cars while cars give them deference and while also completely ignoring traffic laws that vehicles on the road are meant to be following, including them.
I live in a large metro area, and I have not once seen a biker follow any kind of traffic laws. They don't stop at stop signs, they don't indicate turns, they don't even stop at stop lights. They swerve out of the bike lane, into the crosswalk so that they can count as 'pedestrians' and then swerve back into the bike lane once they've gotten to the other side.
And given that, legally speaking, if there is any collision between my car and a biker, I am automatically considered at fault because I'm operating a motor vehicle, I want there to be as little chance of that as possible.
Like, I've got a long rant going here, but don't get me wrong, what I want is for my town to be safer for bicycle travel, and for all of us to reduce our dependency on cars for travel, but when I see the way bikers behave it makes it hard for me to believe that that's what they want.

You should watch some videos of cycling in the Netherlands, it's exactly how you describe there, except on streets where the speed limit is 30km (19M) per hour and few cars drive.
On Turtle Island, a lot of what you're seeing is a practical response to poor infrastructure. Does the bike lane continue into the intersection? Do bikes get the same right of way as pedestrians in the intersection? Do drivers know that bikes have right of way in the intersection? Cause if bikes have to become pedestrians in order to not be cars, bikes will become pedestrians. That's just safety, that's just making the laws as they practically exist in terms of compliance work for them. I bet those cyclists would love a protected bike lane with raised crossings through intersections.

I've never met a cyclist who was on the road for any reason other than "it's literally against the law to ride on the sidewalk", assuming there even is a path for pedestrians to begin with. You've got it backwards lol. The people that design our infrastructure in the US are lobbied heavily by the car industry and incentivised to favor them while placating the poors on bikes by painting some shitty lines by the curb and calling it a day. Proper bike infrastructure doesn't have the issues you mentioned.

That's gotta be hyperbole or confirmation bias if you've literally never seen a cyclist behave well. Or maybe the bike culture where you live is terrible. My primary experience with cyclists is either seeing them in bike lanes and thus not interacting with them or being stuck going slowly behind them until I can safely pass because they lack bike lanes or sidewalks that aren't full of tree root bumps.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with wanting bike traffic to be separated for everyone's sake. However, riding a bike on a sidewalk instead of in the road isn't safer for anyone, which is why it's illegal in many if not most US cities. I know it's counterintuitive. Reading up about it might help curb some of your frustration though.

I agree that separating automobiles from cyclists is far more important for safety. I really like protected bike lanes for that reason. The barrier occupies a little space, but I think it's a win both for drivers and cyclists.
I've also seen photos of some interesting bike lanes that were elevated above the road, but also below the sidewalk level (between the two).

Also I'll drop mine in here for the sake of it, although I get the sense that lemmy in particular will be more likely to agree with me than the broader population: I hate meta progression in roguelites. I still end up playing a lot of games with them because unfortunately that seems to be what sells in that market compared to more traditional roguelikes and if the game is good enough, I can try to look past the system. However, I do think that they just strictly make the games they're in worse. I could get into a whole rant about them, but maybe not here.
Lemmy tends to stigmatize usage if AI because of environmental impact.
I think using AI casually to shorten search for information (always double check it) or to create an image to be amused of or to use as reference to create my own art is perfectly acceptable.
Shit, each day I'm playing videogames, which burns much more electricity than a request to AI which translates to calculation of a function on several matrices. This is nowhere near calculating thousands of textured polygons 144 times a second.
I won't pay for AI tho if it becomes payed or subscription-only. Fuck it.
Also I'm a programmer and I've never used AI to write code for me, and I think it's terrible idea because it will make me too relaxed and dumb, leeching all the skill from me. Also it is useless for anything relatively complex as it will create more problems (bugs) than it solves, and it will be unable to fix them. Treat this as a side note and not an addition to my unpopular opinion about AI, because this part I think is popular.

One unpopular opinion which is safe for me to share is that we should all own less pets, and need to cultivate much more green space in our cities if we want to have them.
One reason i believe this is because cats, for instance, slaughter loads of little creatures. Just imagine - if half the households on a street has their own pet cat, all the mice in the area are getting killed. They're actually so much better st getting mice than rats, too, so it barely has that benefit. Rats are huge.
Another reason is because dogs ... they should be working, and they should have access to interesting greenspace. Sorry if you have a dog and can't provide this, i just think it's so fucked up that we have more dogs in the world than we can actually take care of in this way. Would you force a human to live most of its life indoors with nothing to do? Dogs need more company than many people afford them - i remember reading that people returned their dogs after lockdown because they wouldn't be able to take care of them when working full time, etc cetera.
So I would only have a dog if I had a big garden for it or a huge park nearby. I would ideally have some sort of role sharing with neighbours or friends where we both take the dog on walks. And, best case scenario, I would only have a dog to perform a specific task e.g on a farm.
Punching up is mostly courageous rebellious and poetic satire on higher ups and their policies, Punching down is mainly spiteful and egregious hack comedy. But I think mixing them together to point out the deficiency and incompetence and straight up selfishness of some people and how people with power tend to manipulate and ridicule them while they cavern and bow down to their knees like with Always Sunny South Park and WKUK should classify as morally acceptable comedy.
Punch Up not down but if you do Punch Down make sure it also comes across as Punching up to the people in power and those less fortunate who either bow to them or think they're highly privileged and tend to punch down themselves.
