The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?

I generally don't recognize usernames and don't look at them too much
There's the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)
There's maybe a half-dozen frequent posters who I'm genuinely not sure if they're masterful trolls, some kind of AI training bots, or just really need to go touch grass (preferably on their way to a therapist's office.)
There's one dude whose username just happened to stick out to me after having a random conversation or two with him and seeing him being a generally pretty decent dude around Lemmy, I tagged him "this guy seems cool" at some point, and at some point it occurred to me that he might appreciate knowing that, so I shot him a message, and sure enough he did. I now consider him to be a pretty good friend, which is a new experience for me, I've never really been one to have online friends, I (somehow) do pretty well at making friends in meatspace and have never really felt a need to seek out an online friendship.
There's a handful of people who have said some incredibly dumb shit that I've tagged (for example one dude who I tagged "Tankie, down vote and ignore" although the last few times I've seen him pop up it seems like he may have mellowed out a bit, so good for him)

I haven't stalked his profile, but I feel like every time I've seen him come up he's also seemed like a pretty cool and reasonable dude (I suppose it's possible he's off being a dick in the parts of Lemmy I don't frequent, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt)
I have snarked him about it, myself. I have no objection to overtly affected personal expression (no hypocrite I). It's just that reading a thorn unexpectedly feels like stubbing my toe, but in my brain.

Sxan talks to me all the time and has always been great. I barely register the thorns now.
It's harmless but it's deliberately antisocial which rubs people the wrong way. They're going out of their way to make their comments harder to reader.
I've never had a bad interaction with them but I do think it's kind of obnoxious attention-seeking behavior

Ah Nigel þornberry. I appreciate the dedication to thorns, but ended up writing a script which replaces thorns in their texts because they stand out too much.

What happened to flying squid? They had some health problems and then talked about moving and then disappeared.
I think this place wasn't too healthy for them mentally, and I'm fairly certain after moving they just bowed out of coming back and focused on rebuilding their life in a new country, or at least I hope they did. Lemmy also skews heavily US American (less so than reddit but still largely) and so maybe they just wanted to disconnect from things here in the USA. If I was in a new place I think I'd spend more time trying to get my bearings locally than reading endless news about the place I just left.
If you check in lemvotes you can see some activity from time to time, so I don't think they are dead. It could be a federation issue but they at least appear to have logged in and had some vote activities in December.
Regardless they did not have a healthy relationship with Lemmy. They were averaging something on the order of 15 comments, per hour, per day. That's a comment every 4 minutes, all day, every day, for years.
Idk. We should still probably build something to remember them by. Or to piss on, depending on how you viewed them. They were very political and were doing a lot of "pre blaming" for the, at the time, election which hadn't happened yet. I think it may have broken them.

They spent a lot of time traveling and waiting for medical tests and results with their mom. I attributed the activity to the stress and excess time on their hands.
Flying Squid was an auto-block for me, as soon as I made my account. He always used to ban me because he couldn't win arguments with me in the comments.

Yeah, squid did deep and lasting damage to the fediverse with how they used bans to editorialize communities and those scars remain implicit today.
At the same time they were a prolific and dedicated poster and that's huge in a small community like ours. I didn't like them, at all, and I think they had some deep problems around politics, identity, and some very weird narcissistic tendencies and victims complex. But I think they were also an important member of the community, if one who shouldn't have played the role of moderator.

Most of them are regular posters or admins (Pugjesus, Stametz, Violet08, Mrdown, Picard Manuver, Geneva Convenience, ada, db0, etc. who don't need to be bothered with tags) or people who I have a special friendship with like @AntiBullyRanger (I really hope you're doin' okay) or my legit bro @[email protected]
Then theres various regular commentators on my NSFW posts like @[email protected] and @[email protected] who I appreciate a ton!
(Personally, I was once asked out of the blue by @[email protected] to give my opinion in a discussion about battery tech. I think at the end this will probably be where I consider my life to have peaked.)

Nah, but a few years after I chose this username I was walking around Philadelphia and randomly saw one in the street. Basically no one who's part of my offline life uses that name so it was weird to encounter unexpectedly.
That the name is referencing the tiles is usually people's first guess, but I chose this long before I'd heard of them. When the 2001 X-Men movie came out I was looking for a new username. In the movie they just show the character Toad in his villainous role, but in the novelization they cover more of his life, including his secret identity of Mortimer Toynbee. I liked it and adopted it. It's almost never taken anywhere, either, which is nice.
I didn't expect to show up in this thread at all, let alone multiple times. It's nice to know I've made an impression!

Yeahhhhh people on here sometimes behave in ways I'm going to be charitable and describe as contentious or particularly emotionally committed. Like all the internet as a whole has had that problem since I was a kid browsing forums, but it's certainly sometimes a bit much here.

When I start recognizing a username it's usually because that person is about to get blocked. Applies to quite many users mentioned here too.
I think the small size of the platform is a bit of an issue in this case. The only way to not get "famous" here is by constantly having to make new accounts.

Personally, I try not to pay close attention to usernames - I want to engage with what's said, not form opinions about the people saying it.

Truly one of the strangest people I've ever encountered here. I finally gave in and just blocked them after every attempt at a coherent exchange failed miserably. Nothing I say registers and everything I get back has nothing to do with what was said before. I can't even accuse them of being a bot because I have better discussions with actual bots.

This is gonna sound really terrible, but... I generally don't recognize people by name so much... maybe something dyslexia related? I think there are a couple of rare exceptions, like the user with two letters and then four numbers in their name.
I recognize lots of avatars, as I scroll around, but I don't generally register the names or even descriptions of the images, just kind of like... my brain just remembers purplish-blob shape, red glowy circle, monochromatic goblet.

Frankly, this could be implemented client-side. If there's no avatar set by the remote user, then have the client or Web UI or whatever hash the username/home instance pair and then use the bits of that hash as inputs to procedurally-generate an image. There are a number of forum systems that do this.

I'm actually a bit surprised by the responses here. I know a lot of the names mentioned here, but there are more I don't recognize than I had expected. Sometimes it does feel a little small of a group here, but seeing both the number of names I do recall aaaand all the ones I don't both help me feel this place is about 50% bigger than I had felt.

Yes, I have really failed on staying anonymous. I've doxxed myself so much on here the only things I haven't really given you at some point is a face reveal and my real name. I chose the name as just a simple throwaway since I was planning to just be a lurker, but the community soon started dying and I didn't want to see that. I may have gone a bit overboard. 😅 You guys all seem to really love it though. I get so many DMs from people that really love what I share.
I never used to really think about them. I thought they were neat, but they never really took up much thought. My wife was the one that was a bigger fan, so one day I took her to a raptor rescue, and really getting to spend a bit of time around them apparently formed a connection. I would say I was still pretty normal about it until I started posting here. Then, after doing it every day, I really started to get an idea of how amazing these birds actually are. I've been doing this daily now for 3 years, and I still am learning new things about them on a regular basis. And starting last year, just reading and visiting wasn't enough, so I volunteered at my local rescue. We don't get too many owls since we're a bit more suburban, but I've gotten to handle a few, feed them, and I even got to release a rehabbed owl at our house on my wife's birthday! Our open house is the end of May, and I was supposed to get to hold one of our educational owls for 2 whole days and how it to people and teach them about it, but they sadly both passed of old age over the winter! 😢 I've gotten 2 life sized plushes that are fairly anatomically accurate I will be weighting to bring them up to realistic weight for our state's 2 most common owls, so people will be able to hold a realistic facsimile since people aren't allowed to touch our animals, and I also made 8 life sized cutouts that one of our artists is painting for me so people can see all the owls of our state together in one place. I'll add pics in a moment of what I have so far.
I do not believe I am on the spectrum, I think I just love learning, but as it's a spectrum, who the heck knows. I'm at an age before diagnosing these things was a regular thing if it wasn't severe. My lifelong best friend is totally what was formally known as Aspergers, I think it's just properly called Autism Spectrum Disorder nowadays, and after learning about it, I feel it benefit him to not be labeled something like that back in the 80s when we were kids and it still seemed heavily stigmatized, because now he's a college science professor, head of the science dept, and is debating becoming dean of the school. I don't think that would have happened if he got shuffled off to special classes back in our day. I've just always been bookish, fairly introverted, and had a lifelong love of learning. I don't feel anything inherent about me has ever given me issue to the point I'd be diagnosed with something, but autism doesn't seem to be looked at the way it was decades ago. I love hearing people talk about their passions, so it doesn't matter to me if someone is on the spectrum or not.

It's really satisfying to both learn about our local wildlife, and also to see so many caring people all in one place while it feels like the world is going to hell. It has really made me appreciate my community and local environment.
The owls are beautiful and amazing, but they are also kinda the biggest a-hole cats you've ever met. The hawks and corvids are more "fun" since they are often curious and a bit more interactive with me in positive ways. We also have a wild bald eagle right now in addition to our ambassador bald eagle, and they are just undeniably impressive creatures to see up close. I'm also constantly surprised to see animals come in that I didn't even know lived in this part of the country. We had a Brown Thrasher, which is apparently called the Eastern Roadrunner because it runs around a lot on the ground. We also sometimes get minks and beavers from the very southern part of our county. With us being mainly suburban, I don't think of these guys still being so close to us. And there's tons of more somewhat ordinary animals like kinds of frogs and turtles I've never previously learned about.
This is a Diamondback Terrapin that prefers our one sink to the turtle tanks, so they called her Sadie Sink. The photo doesn't do her justice! The patterns on her skin and shell are so amazing!
For me, one of the great things about this general style of "News Aggregation" social media is that it's community/topic focused rather than being focused on individual personalities/identities. So, in that respect, I really don't notice or pay attention to the usernames, aside from blocking/filtering out all the crumby people that make this place a much worse experience for me. Out of sight, out of mind, so I couldn't even tell you who those people are.
I find that so strange. I never have blocked anyone on any platform and I have been doing that chat with people for a really long time. Like back in the bbs days. I have never found it necessary, and often find that I disagree with someone on one thing, only to find we have common interests elsewhere.
I see people say they block people a lot, but why would you do it? Does it really matter? Do you not simply skip over what is not interesting to you?
I'm probably just really good at identifying bad online behavior with people who will never ever contribute anything of value to me or the platform. If all they're ever going to do is bring negativity and bad vibes, it actually saves me time in the long run to filter them out so I can focus on the actual decent people.
I don't recognize anyone, I don't focus on who says stuff but what is said. I ignore the user and the instance (like ignoring ads on websites) and read the content. Only when it's uncanny pro Russia I check if it's an ml user. I never block or tag, too much work.
Blocking is so easy, though, and so freeing. When I learned to embrace blocking this became a far more chill place.

If Lemmy were my entire window to the world, I'd be worried about an echo chamber. It's not though, so I keep it as a safe place. I don't owe anyone my attention just because they have feels about something I say or we comment on the same boards.
Just a counterpoint. Your way is perfectly valid.
It's not implemented very well and it essentially punishes you for blocking people and distorts your view of things that don't necessarily even have to do with that person. The feature barely checks the box and isn't good enough if its actually important. But of course no one should be doing important things here.

I’m new to this site but in similar sites I don’t normally read the usernames. It’s like my brain just automatically skips over it and as you said just focuses on what is said.
I recognize a few dozen usernames on sight, most of which have already been mentioned. Voyager tracks how many times you've up/downvoted each person and shows it next to their name, which makes it easy to recognize accounts after a while.
Though looking through the comments here there are only three posters who I've never upvoted, two of whom have the new user tag, and almost all that do have votes have two or three digit upvote totals. The Fediverse is definitely small and held up by the frequent posters. It's rare to see a truly new face.
Way too soon to notice specific people. I suck at focusing on/distinguishing people. They all melt together into one homogeneous background mass, in online world and in real life.

There are a few names I informally had good vibes for. I started using tagging to keep track of folks a bit. This especially helped with the opposite because blocking someone who is grossely bad is an easy decision but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. Now I can tag. It kinda gives me this this I wanted from trust cafe where you can rate verything but instead I tag it.
I think you and I must have had the same journey, exiting Reddit, trying different things I'd never heard of before, and eventually finding Lemmy to be the one that sticks.
I try to keep in mind the names of those that I regularly interact with, and even try to pay attention to who my regular lurkers are. While I mainly just interact with people replying to my posts, I lurk a ton myself, but there I think I'm more familiar with the names of the people I am not the biggest fan of, since I don't usually block anyone.

I stumbled on someone's Fediverse stat tracker the other day and I saw this username was like the 27th top poster/commenter and it blew my mind! I feel my main subject matter is so niche. For someone who came here to lurk silently and not participate, I've really missed the goalpost! 😜

I mostly only tag users whom I read as reasonable enough to have a discussion with initially, but I’ve learned it doesn’t go well. And the booooooomer tag is for the prolific poster of boomer-ass memes.
(The combination of green and a positive vote count makes it look like I might be down for Islamophobia, but I just wanted a different color and I feel weird interacting with someone’s comments/posts after I’ve tagged them, because I’ve essentially prejudiced myself against them, so if they’re positive when I tag them, they’ll stay that way)

I color my own tags based on an escalating system of good/bad impressions - so someone who posted questionable opinions or insulted other commenters once or twice gets a dull gray, a repeat offender gets bumped up to yellow, and someone who's shown a long-term pattern of toxic behavior gets the dreaded red tag. I save blocks for people who contribute absolutely nothing positive to the Fediverse - I think I have a few hundred tagged users but less than a dozen blocks.
Similarly, good posters go from white to blue to green, though since Voyager keeps track of and displays lifetime vote totals I only tend to tag the truly memorable posters.

Names come and go. Givessomefucks is the only one that comes to mind. Mostly I just respond to the words. My client shows an upvote total. I guess I start to recognize names when someone states running that upvote total up.
Words are more important than identity. That's why I'm on anonymous social media in the first place. I might be a cantankerous asshole in one thread because mood, and the next I'm offering advice with authenticity and lived experience. Those two posts might as well be written by different people.
I don't buy into celebrity, no matter how small.

I only tend to recognize the users I have assigned custom tags to. Usually to mark them as trolls or suspected bots, but sometimes just because they told a funny story or are enthusiastic about something specific.

Some peoples' usernames stand out, for sure, for one reason or another. Mostly the big ones, they've all been mentioned here already, I don't feel a need to mention them here again.
I feel... okay? with not seeing my own name mentioned here, but then again I don't consider myself to be a power user or whatever. I mostly just like answering questions here.
I worry about becoming too recognizable because I have an unconscious bias to begin self-censoring my harsher opinions once I begin to "know" people in the online space. I prioritize people's feelings over being right, and that can cause me to sugarcoat too often when someone I like says something truly tonedeaf or unintelligent.

There are a few users I seem to run into regularly, but as with Reddit it's mostly disembodied thoughts floating in the ether. I personally prefer the more personal interactions of old forums. I mostly recognize names in the art communities, especially if it's people posting their own art. You get to know a person's style.

I have started to recognize a quite a few folks here and there. Most I recognize for good posts/comments. Even a few that I don’t necessarily agree with, but they are respectful and thoughtful in their replies.
A couple I recognize for not so great reasons, but this space is pretty small so I try not to block folks unless they are outright awful. For most in this category, I just tag and avoid replying to them in the future rather than blocking.
I'm somewhat new, and don't pay a lot of attention to usernames or use the user notes feature (kind of forgot it existed), so I mostly only recognize particularly distinctive usernames. There are a few I'll recognize when I see them, but the only one that's seared into my brain enough to list it offhand is a certain Satanic name.

I notice a lot of the more prolific posters and commenters, for better or worse. Even more so the ones with distinct avatars since I associate that picture with what they post and my client has avatars on by default.
