the trick is to be 15 and get started with a 40 of colt 45 that your friend's mom got for you and your friend for helping with yardwork. choke that down just for the buzz and then actual craft beer is like candy

33

THe trick is to be 10 and your family allows you a little pony beer (old 8 oz glass bottle) 1-2 times per year. It takes away the mystery and when I was older, I didn't feel a need to go get alcohol behind anyone's back. And when I was 21, I drank occasionally, like with pizza sometimes or spaghetti, or a mixed drink socially or something.

Of course, for those that are alcoholics or otherwise get addicted to the alcoholic effects, it can be a struggle, but not really probably relating to when you start drinking in such cases.

There's actually a well known, clear link between drinking debut age (first drink) and rates of alcoholism, as well as other adverse effects (something about employment I think, and drug use for sure).

If I recall correctly the age of debut is statistically even more impactful than the age one starts drinking regularly, when it comes to rates of alcohol dependency.

A lot of other things factor in as well, and a lot of things factor in to push an early debut of course... but drinking debut age is definitely a factor in alcoholism.

I have a working theory that the availability of sweeteners has altered drinking preferences over generations.

When I was growing up everybody drank coffee and beer (and smoked cigarettes, which is probably a little related but a different story).

Coffee and tea were the only feasible way to get caffeine. Sure, cream and sugar was available and used, but as you get more acclimated to the taste you can forgo the stuff and just drink it black.

Likewise, beer is what you had. That was it. There were no sweetened alcoholic drinks in the can or 12 oz bottle form. With the exception of wine coolers but that was marketed more towards older women. And those usually only came in 4 packs. You could do wine or hard liquor with a mixer, but that was expensive and/or likely to get you hammered too quickly. If you wanted affordable casual drinking with friends you were drinking beer. And there weren't even craft beers or microbrewers, just watery chilled donkey piss like Budweiser, Coors, etc.

Most people who started drinking did so with beer. By the time you had a year of sneaking beers with your buddies you were already used to the taste. Hell, I remember when Zima came out and it was a big deal (it was one of the first widely available easy to drink sweetend adult beverages, probably malt, I would guess).

And weed wasn't common either, except in very secretive circles, so if you wanted a buzz, you were drinking.

Anyway, now you've got a whole cornucopia of alcoholic drinks that are easy to sip, caffeine that tastse like a soda, and vapes that taste like candy.

Nobody has to ever acquire a taste for bitter things again.

It's a nice theory, but you're forgetting about ciders and drinks like mead, which can be very sweet.

As for caffeine, I found that if you started drinking it with sugar, you have to actually want to give up sugar to switch to black. There's no need to ever drink it black otherwise. I gave up sugar in my 30s and had to acquire a taste for black coffees. I gave up milk around the same time, which also dulls the bitterness. My parents, who are now in their 60's and 70's still drink milk and sugar. My gen z brother also prefers black.

Also that doesn't explain things like german marzipan, which is bitter AF, and used in desserts. Same goes for cocoa, or dark chocolate. They're entirely optional bitter products that are still popular.

Additionally, new craft beers are selling their bitterness as a feature in the form of IBU listings. (Successfully, I might add, I'm a sucker for a high IBU beer)

Bitter is just another flavour profile, and some people like it, some people don't.

8
lemmy.world

Did you grow up in a renfair? 😛 I never even met anyone who had ever drank mead until I was in my late 20s and hanging out with DnD nerds.

Since the 1970s, in the US beer consumption has steadily gone down 20%, wine up 40%, spirits took a deep dip but came up to 105%.

Growing up I definitely had friends that very quickly switched to mixers as soon as they could or wouldn't drink beer but I'd say, as a whole, a general trend, less people in today's times have grown up with bitter profiles being a necessary part of their imbibing, be it alcohol or caffeine, so when they do get that first sip of some old skunk beer they understandably recoil. Since they have no reason to continue drinking it when there's a Mike's or White Claw next to them... that's that. I hear way more people say they don't like the taste than I did 20 years ago. But it's just a pet theory, might be other factors going on, too.

You're on to something about choosing flavor profiles though. After about a year or two drinking sugary creamy coffee I gradually switched to black. I like the flavor, as well as dark chocolate and stout beers. I think some people are wired for it, like in the examples you provided. Interestingly, I'm not super crazy about sour, and I've met a few people who absolutely love it. Candies, drinks, etc.

3

Ha ha ha, no I just had some devious friends coming up. Mead is probably the easiest thing to make yourself at home, and you can do it with really unassuming ingredients. Bread yeast, and store bought honey will make a perfectly serviceable mead. Just buy flour and bake some bread at the same, and no one suspects a thing... until you overdo it, and get violently ill in the living room lol, tends to be a give away. I actually think the friend who started it was part of a DnD group, so it may still have started there.

I still do it as a hobby but with proper yeast and nutrients etc. now. Plus I actually know about things like stabilization and back sweetening! Muuuch nicer end product!

My point was more that sweeter options have always been available. I don't know what it's like in the US, but you can always find cider here. Doesn't matter how small or backwater the pub is, there'll be one on tap.

As for beer consumption going down in the US: You can get some really dry wine that's quite bitter too. (And ciders and meads too come to think) and conversely you can get some really sweet, easy drinking beers too. Also, alcohol consumption across the board is down globally, so while I don't dispute that beer consumption is down everywhere, I'm just not sure it can be entirely blamed on being bitter. Things come in and out of fashion. My personal working theory is that it's become too expensive to drink casually.

I’m not super crazy about sour

Oh I love sour! I make my own hot sauces too, and while I do make them quite hot, I also add straight citric acid to them, and many people find my sauces to be pretty gross lol! Guess I'll stick to my day job ha ha ha!

Sweet is actually the flavor I could take or leave. Not saying I hate it or anything, it's just kinda low down on my preference list. I'm very much a savory snacker!

4

i use a non-dairy creamer for mines, and the low cal options. i use the non-aspartame sweetener.

i like dark chocolate too, but i prefer mostly 85%-90%+ anything lower than that is just to milky and sweet.

1

We must be the same age. Zima was a revelation, especially with the jolly rancher in it. Then in college it was just Beast Light because that’s what was available to me.

2

I don't even want the buzz, so if I'm going to drink socially it's all about taste.

2

Late 20s you need to revisit all the shit you didn't like before, especially moldy cheese. Sweet starts to suck a bit and bitter gets good.

Also not sure if it's my addiction but black coffee is amazing. It's an acquired taste and most people go milk and sugar - > milk - > black. Green tea, black tea, mushrooms, spicy, wasabi, mustard, strong gouda, grana padano and so much more are all so good.

Recently visited The Wee Tap in Edinburgh and have tried lots of Vault City. None beat Azvex Operation Genome [26.05] Mango and Blackberry Ice Cream Sour though. Could put that in the meal deal isle with the other smoothies and no one would notice the difference.

4

Ooh, haven't tried that one!

A beer shop close to me has a deal with Vault City (started two months ago): they get ALL the beers Vault City produces. I guess I'll be spending more money going forward lol.

Btw, if you like sours, try the Foundation by VC. It's what all their sour beers are based on, and it's really good!

3

I rarely consume alcohol nowadays (maybe 1-2x a year), but I'll keep that in mind.

1

Sure, but kinda ALL beer is an acquired taste, and frankly I don't think I've ever thought, "I sure do want a tasty beverage and don't care about the alcohol content" and ended up drinking beer. Even if you're not getting drunk, the alcohol is the point, and everything else is mitigation.

That said, when I am feeling like a little bit of alcohol, I like a nice malty dark beer, stouts of course, but even a simple schwarzbier dark lager can do the trick. A very dry cider is even better though, edging close to the point where I might actually pick it purely for taste.

3

If they taste good because they taste like something else, why not just drink that something else? /hj

All beers are bitter, things humans evolved to stay away from (bitter signals poison). If you like beer, it’s because you’ve become accustomed to it, not because it’s a good flavor to humans.

-4
sh.itjust.works

What’s weird is ciders exist that taste just like juice yet they are the niche drink.

4

I can drink a lot of beer and I can drink a lot of apple juice, but I can only drink a couple of ciders before I am done.

5

Since others are posting about the how and not the why:

I don’t like most beers, but the ones I like are refreshing (mainly Almaza the local standard here in Lebanon, a Pilsner if that means anything to anyone). It’s slightly bitter like tea, less so than coffee, and fizzy but not as much as a sugary drink. It complements a lot of foods, doesn’t really get you drunk quickly (I don’t drink to that point), is pretty widely available, and is nice to drink during a chat because it takes a bit of time, kind of like coffee or tea.

Supposedly Almaza is similar to Asahi or Kingfisher from India.

I’ve also enjoyed “interesting” beers but that’s how beer works for me. I’ve had Guinness, it’s interesting, more of a curiosity for me, very bready, I can see myself having it often if it was widely available.

If you’re talking more about the American movie style “buy a 96-pack of canned yellow water and consume half of it while watching American football alone” beer I have no idea what that’s about.

Just think of it as stanky sourdough social beverage. If that doesn’t appeal to you, there you go.

It is possible that you just haven’t had one you liked yet. The are a lot of different flavors and styles. I like some but not others. Then again, why bother since drinking isn’t really all that great for you anyway. 😄

2

I've had two styles I liked, a lambic and a Berliner weiss. They aren't really "beer" the way most people think of it.

1

I'm with you. I tried to acquire a taste for it in college, but it still tastes like sour regret to me.

1

All diet drinks. Whatever sugar substitutes they use taste awful no matter what. Now there are products I can't consume because the default version has fake sugar as well. Nasty stuff.

100
BorgDronereply
feddit.nl

Part of it is just getting used to it. I used to hate the no sugar versions of Coca-Cola®️. Other than the taste the viscosity is also ‘wrong’ in Coke zero. The sugary versions is much thicker.

I switched anyway because I was drinking too many calories.

Strangely though, real Coke now tastes weird to me. There is this strange aftertaste that I never noticed before switching to zero.

25

It also helps with the Zero-style ones that they use a couple of different sweeteners.

One of the tricks I found is that when I occasionally want sweet tea, I'll take a packet of Equal, sucralose, and stevia and add to my glass. You get more of the sweet but without enough of each one that the bitterness or other weird taste you get when you use enough to make it super-sweet doesn't happen. It just tastes sweet.

14

I cut back my regular Coke addiction with Coke Zero, and was not happy. I found Pepsi Zero tastes closer to what I like than Coke Zero does. And if I add a teaspoon of sugar, it's almost pleasant to drink.

3

im the same with diet "soda", now the sugary ones is just too sweet and you know you feel bad drinking it. i think mexican coke, aka cane sugar is the best one from what ive heard.

2

I have a friend who is from a non-"western" country, and moved to North America. This has been one of their biggest gripes with living here: food (especially but not exclusively prepared food) is either full of sugar, or full of artificial sweeteners. Seeing as they don't particularly like sweet foods, and they absolutely don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, this means that like half the food in a grocery store or restaurant has to be immediately written off. For example, if you want a soda thats not so overwhelmingly sweet, currently the only options are Bubly and imported stuff. Obviously, there are other drink options, so its not like its the end of the world, but having a glass of milk or cup of tea with your pizza just doesn't hit the same. At the same time, everyone is talking about dieting and about how terrible everything is for you, yet no one seems to consider just making food less sugary.

Diet Dr Pepper is the only one I like and I assume that one of the flavors in it is covering up that nasty fake sugar flavor and aftertaste.

8

I like them all, but definitely Diet Dr. Pepper the most. I assumed it was because Dr. Pepper has kind of an artificial/medicinal flavor.

3

Totally agree. Since they have a super tax here all the drinks have gone either fully diet or reduced sugar and added sweeteners to it.
I can't stand it. Coke is basically the only hold out left and the full sugar version is getting less and less prominent in supermarkets.

aspartame, is the most common amongst diet sodas brand names. people dont like stevia soda, because some people apparently taste it differently.(the brand names like zevia, makes it sickly sweet)

1

Stevia is so gross. It ruins anything it touches. Aspartame is ok. Splenda is a migraine trigger.

For coffee, a demitasse spoon of sugar - moderation is the way, or I like a lot of milk no sugar (but that probably ends up with the same amount of sugar from lactose)

For tea, mostly unsweet is fine.

For soda, moderation again but I like the diet version better than the sugared ones. Diet coke is fine and doesn't give me a headache. Once in a while though, not every day. Just when I want something that is nothing.

8

Probably ethyl butyrate I think it's in Monster too, but there's a lot of weird crap in energy drinks to make it taste/smell medicinal. The recent Lab Coatz vid reverse engineering Red Bull has a whole laundry list of bizarre chemicals.

I'd say that, even aside from anything specific to Monster, most carbonated beverages are optimized for drinking cold and aren't great when warm.

3

Fair enough. Tho there’s something about the smell that just permeates a car after you open Monster if you don’t immediately toss it when empty. Not that I’m even a fan of the flavor anymore. Liked it when I was in high school, but can’t stand it as an adult.

2

Agree on the stevia. It's sweet but not like sugar. And leaves a weird aftertaste

6

Original Monster tastes like battery acid and I don't know why I love it (especially khaotic)

2

I know it's not for everyone, but I personally prefer Splenda or sucralose.

2
awful.systems

Interesting about the stevia! May I ask what it tastes like to you? A couple of years I bought a liquid stevia sweetener on a whim (the "regular" one might have been sold out), and was surprised that it tasted... Idk. Sweet, but way warmer than regular sweetener. Hard to describe. Used up the bottle, then bought my regular sweetener again and somehow, it tasted awfully bitter to me now. Somehow, I can't go back now and really like stevia.

1
lemmy.world

Its hard to describe but I'd say it's not the immediate taste so much as it is the aftertaste (both are bad but the latter is worse). It's just a lingering, unpleasant fake sweetness that sticks around for way too long.

Depending on how lightly it is roasted and brew method, it can be much less bitter and more floral and "bright". Agree that the average coffee is dark roast and invariably bitter, however.

13

Yeah, café coffee is very often stupid strong and dark roast to serve the addicts that crave bitter (like me)

1

Could just be changing taste buds. I never made a concerted effort to stop wanting sweet things but in my late 20s I pretty much never made an effort to acquire them on my own. I don't dislike ice cream but I've literally never bought it or any sweets for more than a decade now.

With that change came enjoying bitter tastes more as well.

5

I mean that's fair, and there are plenty of foods like bitter squash that some people enjoy a lot with no addictive chemicals (I know of)

But at the same time, I never met a decaf fan who didn't first like caf

3
nord.pub

I have no evidence but this has always been my working theory.

It explains why people become so adherent to a specific brand or brewing method.

The same applies to cigarettes.

5

I'm addicted and I like all of them as long as it doesn't have sugar. Filter, espresso, mocha, americano, instant, pour over, Arabic, golden and they can be anywhere between 0C and 85C in temperature.

My issue with room temp coffee is that I drink it too fast, lol

1

The taste that coffee adds to things is great, and the smell is amazing. A bad brew tastes like bitter dirt water and has the same effect on your stomach. I've never had a good black brew in my life.

I do love me some coffee milk, but at that point we are right back to coffee adding flavor to things, not being good itself.

4

the caffiene makes it bitter, people seem to like the cafestol, if they using unfiltered coffee, which apparently not good for you. its definitely acquired taste, i did not like it when i was still college, when i drank a stronger for first time.

The crema on top of espressos is also worth mentioning. If you get a big cup of strong coffee from espresso machine and remove the foam from the top it tastes waaaaay less bitter.

there will be lots of personal opinions here ... mine is that champagne is -not awful but still- overrated.

45
fedia.io

IMHO it’s saved by the mimosa. Throw some orange juice in that overhyped sparkling grape juice and I am IN. Great for tolerating events with people you don’t like.

19

Mimosa just exposes how most champagne/sparkling wine that most people are familiar with just sucks already.

If it didn't, you wouldn't mask it's great taste with orange juice.

Good champagne/sparkling wine doesn't need that. What bars put in mimosa is the cheap crap that no one should drink in the first place.

-1

I had LOTS before I had one from a friend who really knows wines.

That changed my opinion of champagne as a whole, but most of it (especially in the US, or the Brut style) just sucks.

But that's wine in general. I've had lots of mediocre wine and a few that were fantastic (to my tastes).

Consider all the varieties and vintages, then everyone's personal tastes, and it's no wonder opinions are all over the map.

4

Champagne is one of the few drinks that generally fucks me.

I can have nine or ten pints in a night and feel rubbish but function the following day. I can have a bottle or two of sparkling wine and feel like shit for the following morning, but still function.

Two glasses of champers and I am literally doubled over with a bastard of a hangover the following day.

2

I'm just gonna go ahead and be the guy that says... all alcohols.

I've tried beer, wine, tequila, vodka, hard liquors, spirits, fruity drinks, creamy drinks, coffee flavored rum, hard seltzer, hard cider, champagne, you name it. They don't all taste horrible-- coffee (even though I don't usually drink it) and fruit flavored drinks can be acceptable-- but I haven't ever tried a single drink that tastes good because it has alcohol, it's always because the alcohol is overpowered by something else. Just give me the something else please.

I dont particularly like the taste of alcohol, and beer is just way to bitter for me generally. Ive had some wine that was decent, and occasionally ill have a cider, but I generally just don't understand why people drink alcohol.

  1. Energy Drinks.

I don't get why people like them, they taste awful. Red bull in particular makes me wanna throw up. Its so carbonated and so bitter they add so much sugar, and then you just get this sweet-bitter taste that is just awful.

21

Saw several coffees mentioned and that got me wondering.

I have had good cafe coffee once in my life. Most of the cafes make sugar nonsense. When I order black coffee, it's a coin flip between burnt bitter mess and fucking battery acid.

Now what are the chances that many people haven't had a decent cup of black coffee?

I'll add Gin and Tonic. I've tried a lot, anywhere from homemade with supposedly good gin, and at expensive bars. It's just a shit drink.

5

It is greatly improved with lemon instead of lime, but the garnish is unlikely to change your mind by itself.

2

Don't drink anymore but loved me some neat gin in my time. The more juniper the better. St. George's Terroir and Never Never Triple Juniper were my poisons of choice.

4

Is it supposed to taste like Pinesol? Because that's all I could taste the first and last time I drank it straight.

3

Gin is the only hard liquor I like strangely enough. I think because it's "dry" and doesn't coat my mouth like rum or vodka, both of which I find absolutely disgusting without exception.

1

Definitely coffee. I know it's super popular but I can't stand it. I kinda like the smell of it, but the taste I find awful and the aftereffects are excruciating and longlasting. Someone suggested I might have an allergy. I might or might not look further into this at some point

I have tried decaf though, once... chasing the hope that it would still -despite the absence of caffeine- trigger bowel movement at a critical time in my life. and it did! Apparently caused by gastrine, from my superficial reading.

18

Champagne. It tastes of bitter, sour and fizz and because of its stupidly intense carbonation, drinking it needs to be done in tiny little wincing sips, lest it bubble up through your sinuses and come out of your nose.

I swear people only pretend to like champage because they believe it's the drink for 'classy' celebrations, so disliking champagne is, in their mind, a 'low class' and ungrateful thing to do.

sh.itjust.works

Sour beers / goses. I keep coming back every couple of years to see if my tastes have changed and they always taste awful to me. I'm glad most brewers hopped (pun somewhat intended) on the IPA train because I much prefer them over the sour options.

Must be one of those cilantro situations, I'm the complete opposite. Give me sours all day and take away all the IPAs, blech

15
Rhynoplazreply
lemmy.world

I don't think I could drink a ton of sours all the time, but the super hoppy IPA trend was the worst thing to ever happen to craft beer. Give me a nice rich stout instead. Even in the middle of the summer!

3
Jarixreply
lemmy.world

I could and have drinken Guinness all day

2

Ah Guinness, the Coors Light of stouts. I'd love to introduce you to a Russian Imperial, or a Breakfast Stout!

1

You might be onto something, when sours and goses got kinda popular in the late 2010s everyone I knew that hated IPAs was all about them, I love IPAs and every sour I’ve ever had tasted like sweaty socks. Heard similar from other fans of pale ale

1

Kombucha, I can't stand the taste but people who like it seem to be obsessed with it. It's good for making vegan leather with though.

Haha long story short, I was in the middle of one of the *stan countries driving through and we bought a 12 pack of 2 litre bottles that we didn't realise was sparkling. Making cheap packet pasta, coffee and brushing your teeth with sparkling water is not fun!

Just open it and let it go flat. Did you spend 15 minutes camping, total?

0

You don't like perfume and carbonic acid in your water????

Yeah fair enough.

2

Carbonated flavored water. I do not understand how people can drink something that’s only claim to flavoring is that it at some point sat near a fruit of some kind.

17

Beer. I hate beer.

Oh, I like other alcohols. A nice cider. Some wine. A cocktail. But not beer.

And people have tried making me drink so many kinds of beer, from cheap store brands to "No, this isn't like other beer. It's expensive artisinal beer made in the local region that tastes like a whole fruit basket!". No, it still tastes like beer.

13

Everyone I know drinks red bull. I've never tried it, it smells like cough syrup vomit. Please don't ask me how I know, it was traumatic. I've watched a close friend crack one open first thing in the am, she looks so happy. Blurggggggh.

13

Most alcoholic beverages.

The only one that is both awful, people acknowledge it is awful, but they still drink it a lot is malort. Fucking love that the best endorsement of malort is "this is the worst tasting thing in the world. Try it."

13

Coffee.

I absolutely love the smell of fresh ground coffee. I even ground some up and put it in a bowl on the counter to make the aroma fill the room one time.

But the taste is awful. 🤢

13
leminal.space

Oh, coffee and all forms of alcohol.

I think I might have stronger perception of bitter flavours than the average person, so both of these taste bad to me. Coffee is hands down the worst though. It doesn't even smell good. It's like if someone burnt something. Rancid.

Before anyone claims I've just encountered bad coffee - I live in Melbourne, we have a lot of high quality baristas here so I doubt it.

12
Jarixreply
lemmy.world

.....it doesn't even smell good?! I'm so sad for you. Coffee, bread, bacon are my 3 favourite smells

10

I'm quite surprised nobody has mentioned Scotch. It's revered by old dudes, with super expensive, hard to find bottles only pulled out for the most special occasions. No matter how expensive the bottle it always tastes like it was decanted straight out of Sasquatch's butthole

12

Wine. No, you’re drinking grapes that are past their expiration and smell awful. I’m not crazy!

10

A lot of fancy stuff would not appeal to the average persons pallate. Its kinda like beer and coffee which I think some people like but many get used to. Anyway for the bulls 3rd victory my sister got dom perignon or whatever. everyone hated it but its dry which I guess is the fancy pallet appeal. although fancy pallet to me are folks that convince themselves they like it because they think it makes them better. the refined pallet.

10

Alcohol. I cannot abide the taste (or aftereffects) of alcoholic drinks, that shit ruins everything

10
lemmy.world

I don't get hard liquor. Some are drinkable mixed, but it's like you just made the mixed drink a bit worse. So far I only had one liquor, which did benefited the mixed drink. Licor 43 with milk, but I guess you could just make this without alcohol. Of course I didn't drank all types of liquor and I never tasted premium stuff. I don't even like wine. The only thing I do actually enjoy is beer. There I do like the taste. With mixed drinks, it looks to me that they just wanted a version that is drinkable, so you can get drunk. To me loosing control from alcohol is not fun. A bit light headed is fine, but for me beer does this as well.

Licor 43 with milk,

Did they serve it in a tiny beer mug? Our bar served those as Tiny Beers and you are right, those are delicious!

2

I didn't drank it at a bar. First one I drank at a birthday party and afterwards also always at home.

2

Seltzer water. I don't understand why it's even sold at stores or offered in cafeterias. Stuff tastes like cement.

Edit: grammar

9
MBechreply
feddit.dk

It feels like the water is angry, why drink angry water???

6
sh.itjust.works

I love seltzer water. I think the taste of cement you hate is carbon. Even if the bubbles are gone, I can still taste it.

Maybe it's like cilantro. To some people it tastes like soap.

6

I def didn't like it as a kid but now it's one of the main things I drink. I think I've always liked cilantro though

1

My dad used to get weekly deliveries of the stuff. Couldn't stand it.

2

I am going to likely get downvoted to hell for this but Dr Pepper. It tastes like Raid (the bug killer spray, the way it smells is how DP tastes).

9

If matcha wasn't basically the new boba (at least in the West), trendy and whatnot among the girlies, people would admit it's just grass + whatever else is in the drink (and it's not the grass but the rest which makes it enjoyable). Or maybe it really does taste great but only for half of the Western world, idk, but it hasn't been my experience (and my wife hates it too so there are always exceptions, lol).

9

Any beverage with High Fructose Corn Syrup. It's not actually sweet like sugar to my taste buds, it has a really bitter after taste, extremely sharp. I can always tell when it's not real sugar in a beverage.

8
cannedtunareply

Fucking amazing, that’s what.

Coca-Cola and Pepsi are too damn sweet.

8
fedia.io

Like many others here, you're getting my upvote because you've expressed a valid opinion, even if I happen to quite like the drink in question.

You get this comment because a bunch of people either don't get the distinction, or are put off by the profanity. Not really sure which.

2

Back in the 90s where I'm from, there was a rumor that Dr Pepper shrank your balls.

1

NA (non alcoholic) beer.

I enjoy beer, even the macro-brewery styles. Every NA beer I've tried is the dishwater tasting worst example of beer. I don't get it. There are so many better NA options.

8

Mineral water, or bubbly water. Bubbly mineral water. It’s all gross and I’m tired of pretending it’s not.

8

Matcha and / or bubble tea. Can't stand the stuff.

8

Aren't bad tasting drinks fun though? Like it's a sensory experience

8
lemmy.zip

Is that the one that tastes like medicine? My (HK) friend calls it Chinese poison

1
_thebrain_reply
sh.itjust.works

I haven't drank enough baiju to form an opinion, but I always thought it was more of a class of liquor then anything specific (think whiskey, as opposed to jack Daniels). I had one person tell me it was the moonshine of China. And then I go to a liquor store and see some highly prized bottle of it for 3 or 4 hundred usd or more.

1

Yes. It’s a denomination. There’s also Taiwanese Baiju that taste like jaggermester

If I’m not mistaken it’s only mean « clear liquor » so

2

Vodka. It tastes like paint thinner. People say they like it and it must be popular because it sells frequently. But then why do people wince after drinking it?!

7
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Cola, any kind. I dont get how fizzy brown drink became popular outside of the whole "cocaine in a drink" thing early on.

7

I get the past must have been boring. Water, tea, milk. Water, coffee, milk. Something fizzy and sweet was earth shattering.

3

A lot of answers here are things that are acquired tastes. Most alcoholic beverages for example: once you get used to them you start to appreciate the interesting alcohol-soluble flavors that you can't get anywhere else. Learning to like bitter flavors opens up things like coffee (though the caffeine addiction probably helps too).

The one drink that I cannot understand is cola. I remember in the 90's seeing all the ads about Pepsi vs Coke. Restaurants and grocery stores and households picked a side. You'd occasionally encounter the weirdo or centrist who liked both, the juggalo with Faygo cola, or elitist with Jones soda, or the weirdo with a generic or another minor brand. All of them are terrible. I like a bunch of weird and strong flavors. Umami, salty, herbal, floral, sweet, acidic, whatever. I have a bag of Horehound hard candies on my desk that everyone else hates. I like to make my own mint soda by adding mint syrup to club soda. I cannot understand how cola ever became popular.

5

Someone already said beer, so I'll go with wine. I've tried it several times. Both red and white. All disgusting.

I'll take straight gin or vodka over wine.

5

I suspect lager/beer/IPA/RealAle etc.

I love almost all of it now, but as a teen first trying it it was disgusting and I had to pretend to like it because thats what Real Men drink. I can't be sure if its an acquired taste, or something that only comes with age, or my main suspicion is that its like Stockholm Syndrome for your tongue.

5

This is a personal question, different people have different taste. And it changes over time too. I can't like anything that is tooth-shattering sweet but can appreciate bitter flavor now.

My answer to this is always a Negroni. I cannot apprehend it, and I like cocktails. The Negroni is a cup of bitter sugar syrup and I cannot taste whatever it is that people like in it. It's like someone drank Campari and said "not sweet enough" what the heck?

Tequila, scotch, bourbon, all those I drink "lengthened" with some soda water to appreciate them and can taste the delicious flavors once they are diluted. Gin is good with tonic & lime. But the very strong, oversweet stirred drinks I don't enjoy and Negroni is the most beloved of them.

5
  • eggnog
  • milk

Possibly not liking the former is due to not liking the latter. I've never liked the taste of plain milk. I use it in cooking. I drink chocolate milk a couple of times a year. I've not drunk plain cow milk more than a couple of times in my life and didn't like it. I threw up when quite young (preschool/daycare) to cereal with milk on it and again when I was like 6-8ish when my then-new stepfather tried to make me eat it. That probably didn't help anything.

5

I might have missed it but did nobody mention Raki?

Anise seed flavored...gag....

5

ITT: People answering "drinks I don't like but others do", which has nothing to do with the OP. But to be fair OPs question is not really anything that can be answered objectively anyway, since taste is very subjective. So one person not liking it does not mean that other peope who claims they like the same thing are lying, they most likely really do like it.

Anyway, the thread would probably have been more relevant if OP had asked "Something you don't like, but is liked by others?".

5

Moxie. Although, I think the right answer is that "I'd never consider something others liked as bad because that would be judgmental and offensive." Based on recent exchanges here.

5

Moxie tastes like unsweetened Dr. Pepper and cough syrup, but in a good way.

1

Moxie, a regional soda in Maine. Imagine Dr Pepper mixed with root beer and cough syrup. Yeah, disgusting. Most do hate it, but there are enough people who like it to warrant a Moxie festival every year.

4

Tequila. It tastes like doing a vodka body shot off a sweaty unwashed taint. No idea how people enjoy it.

4

Typical British tea. I'm British and definitely an outlier but the typical black tea with milk and sugar is revolting to me. I love green, oolong, some black, yellow, white etc though.

4

Pretty much all alcohol. First time it tastes awful. Then you start to appreciate the side effects, not the aquired taste, cause it tastes awful

4

For a while, these green grass puree drink stands that were becoming popular. I cannot think of the name, but surely somebody else will remember.

It tasted, predictably, like freshly mowed green grass which you would be burping up for days.

I had precisely one sample. Others were returning multiple times a day and I'm just like... No way you could have become that self-deluded but... We were there for a while!

4

Moxie. It’s like all the worst flavors of birch beer and root beer combined.

4

I don't think anyone considers it "amazing", but what in the holy fuck is with 'gluten-free', and why the holy hell would I ever not want gluten if I'm not allergic? Are people conflating it with "glutton"? Do they think it'll make them fat? Gluten-free muffins sound like fucking torture devices from hell.

4
awful.systems

I don't think you know just how much you have offended the entirety of the German tech world.

3

Anything fruit flavored that doesn't actually contain any actual fruit. They all taste like poison to me. Energy drinks, vitamin water, orange crush... You name it

3

I feel like there'd be too many to list for me... But most would probably be alcoholic.

Whiskey. Eggnog. Red wine. Mulled wine. Coffee.

3

Tap water. This is highly dependent on where you live. I've had well water that was better than anything I've ever drank and then there's city/town water... ugh.

It's funny how people bring up how advanced the local water plant is while turning a blind eye to the, I don't know 50-60 year old piping that delivers it to your house? I have to run a whole house filter just to shower with it.

2

Deviled eggs. Every woman i know fawns over them and scarfs them down the second they can but its literally all of the worst foods plopped into an egg (the egg is fine, i guess)

That being said, i love the taste of medicine and look for things people complain tastes like cough syrup or nyquil

2

I know multiple people who like Club Mate. It's just an ash tray flavored energy drink to me, never liked it

2

I don't like matcha or any traditional tea. Tannins in general taste horrible to me, I think I'm sensitive to them or something. It tastes like dryness and astringent, like I've put a cotton bud in my mouth

1

Numerous people have said coffee, but I will be more specific:

I despise 3rd wave coffee. Its often sour and disgusting.

I love Italian coffee though.

1

You are absolutely correct, and every single answer in this thread are expressions of pure subjective taste. I think it is the loaded question form of OPs title which is problematic. It can't really be answered, because it assumes that if one person doesn't like something, then anyone else liking it must be them lying about it, which is a pretty daft scenario.

1
