Temple of Void - Soulburn [Detroit USA, 2026] [FFO: Bolt thrower, Runemagick. Asphyx]

Awesome Michigan death-doom, very heavily influenced by Asphyx, not particularly innovative, but consistently well produced and constructed albums across their entire discrography. Linked track is off their latest LP The Crawl and one of their more Bolt Thrower-esque tracks with a fun fist pumping kind of energy.

Oromet - The Sinking Isle

I really enjoy the stark beauty in this album, after a few listens I was just getting totally lost in that bright haunting guitar. Marathon in particular is a stand out track to me, the drums sound like a warrior beating his shield to ward off death. Forsaken Tarn, seems to capture in it's lyrics, some lost soul wondering some desolation, but the music develops this somewhat dissociative brightness and triumphal sound at moments, a really interesting contrast.

I'm strongly tempted to place this in my top 5 albums of the year, it's nothing groundbreaking, but the drumming and tone here brings something interesting to the table. Let me know your thoughts.

Vulcano - Death Metal [Brazil, 1986] [FFO: Holocausto, early Sepultura)

This is one of those bands that just seemed to be cursed with never ending line-up chaos, and the accompanying identity problems. Nonetheless here they managed to put one of the strongest blackened death metal album in the golden era of that sound. Sit back and enjoy some bestial blasphemous blast beats (allegedly) played with human tibia bones.

Jungle Rot - Genocidal Imperium [USA, 2022] [FFO:Obituary]

Some people like to claim that Jungle Rot is complacent, that they just make the same album again and again and expect you to be impressed. Personally, I entirely ignore these people because I'm obviously too dumb to not simply go "oh nice riff", as they jingle the same keys they've been using in-front of my face again and again. On a more serious note, this album does have problems, it starts incredibly strong with some sick groovy riffs, but it honestly feels like they just got bored halfway through phoned in the back half. Still a very solid album front to back, but if you're familiar with Jungle Rot you're not likely to be impressed.

Afterbirth - Devils With Dead Eyes [New York, USA, 2023] [FFO: Cryptopsy, Artificial Brain, Blood Incantation]

Feels weird to praise a Progressive Brutal Death Metal album specifically for it's vocals of all things, but Will Smith (Ex-Artificial Brain) always delivers the most disgusting brutal growls. Combine that with flawless thrash-tinted riffage, and spacey progressive synthladen segments, and you have a disgustingly evil but weirdly psychedelic album.

Tyranny - Tides of Awakening [FFO:Thergothon]

Some of the most extremely crushing, hopeless, Funeral Doom around. Two man group consisting two of the three members of Wormphelgm (an equally intense blackened Funeral Doom Band). Very much a band that many will find simply unlistenable, however I really think you can't easily find much else in the world that matches the sheer hopeless, icy-cold, dirge-like quality of this LP, an utter master class in pacing for funeral doom. I personally recommend listening to all in it's entirety instead of song by song, however that can be more than a bit daunting with it's over an hour length.
