We try to teach our kids to be honest and not to lie, but I don't think we'd like what we'd get if children were always completely honest.

I always hate the inevitable interrogations when something gets destroyed, and nobody knows how it happened. But, I imagine the complete opposite would be even more frustrating:

Who broke this?

Me

How?

Ninja moves.

Will you please be more careful?

Probably not

Don't you even care?

Not really.

ADHD throughout history

My wife is huge fan of media that takes place in the 1800s, and while watching shows like Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn, or the various Yellowstone prequels, I started thinking about living in those times, and specifically, living with ADHD.

I don't know if this is necessary but: I'm not trying to insult or shame here. We all know that we have challenges, and whatever comes after this, or possibly in the comments, is just assumptions on what these challenges looked like through the lens of your typical person in the 1800s.

That being said, I suspect that there wasn't a lot of successful ADHDers in history.

Imagine living out on the prairie, and animals need fed and milked daily. The crops need planted by a certain time in order to to be ready for harvest, but not too early that they'll frost and die, and they also need frequent attention. A trip to your neighbors takes twenty minutes and going into town takes two hours. Preparing a complicated meal can be an all day process, and not even basic meals can be tossed together in less than an hour. No refrigeration means no stocking up on perishables, and leftovers are only good for a few hours. And to top it all off, nobody has ever heard of ADHD, let alone any medication, therapy or understanding for it.

Thinking about myself in those situations, I'd especially miss my phone: Reminders, calendars, alarms, being able to look back at what was said in a email or text conversation, and being able to pay my bills or check my bank account the moment I think about them, no matter where I am. I feel like I'd be lost and forgetting everything all the time.

Makes me wonder if the cliche Town Drunk character has ADHD. Chasing dopamine and is able to get by well enough that he can buy his booze and a bed to sleep in, but he's never really able to keep his shit together long enough to get any further ahead.

Not sure where I intended the conversation to go, but it was something I was thinking about, and I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the topic. Could you have survived in the 1800s? Are there any careers that ADHD might have been helpful, or at least not as debilitating?

After hearing all the hype about avocados, OP decides to try them, expecting them to taste like apples, berries, or other types of fruit.

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/46831588

Avocado. Is it really so untasty or I am doing something wrong?

Avocado. I heard much about these fruits/berries/whatever. But I am a poor guy from a very poor and totally non-tropical country. So apples and carrots are the sweetest things around and apples become too expensive too.

Still I bought a few. Just out of curiosity. It tastes like... butter block. Internet says that it should be this way. So... Why people eat it? Maybe it is bad alone and\or raw, but after some preparation it is delicious?

Am I missing something?

Who else has been dealing with consistent crashes in certain games?

This all started for me when Starfield came out. I couldn't get past the tutorial because it would crash within ten minutes of staying up the game. I never did get to play it. I had similar issues with Avowed, Doom Middle Ages, Oblivion Remastered, and now Borderlands 4. I called Xbox support and ift course they had me reinstall, factory reset, change Mac address, and all that, only to listen to me play for ten minutes before it crashed yet again. The kids can play Siege, Fortnite and Roblox all day long with no issues, but I can't get even get to the first bandit camp in BL4.

I know that most people aren't having this issue, but there is a significant number of people on Reddit complaining about the same issues on the exact same games. I barely touch my Xbox anymore because I'm getting frustrated with not being able to play any of the games I want to play.

Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions, solutions, or success getting Microsoft to give a shit?

Who else likes to mess with spammers?

Great news everyone! I've just been offered a position to remotely train an AI and I can make up to $6000 a day!

Yeah, right.

I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone who randomly instant messaged me. I like to play dumb with these people and then occasionally throw some obscure questions at them and watch them squirm, or just toss subtle insults in my replies.

Anyone else get a kick out of messing with these scammers? Any particular shenanigans you like to throw at them, out any good stories that have come from it?

Pa. lawmaker plans to introduce bill requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.

22 years ago (has it really been THAT long?), we got rid of this law.

I think everybody should wear a helmet every time. Not wearing a helmet is extremely stupid and dangerous. I've known lots of people who have riden without a helmet and have been fine, but I also had a cousin that died that way.

That being said, this feels like a "protect me from myself" or "we'll decide for you, since you can't be trusted to make good choices." law. I think I'd rather it stay the way it is, let people make their own poor choices.

I'm curious what others think.
