US Congressman Greg Casar said the case of 5-year-old Liam Tadeo exemplified how President Donald Trump and his immigration enforcement agencies are using children "as bait and leverage to fuel his mass deportation machine," as it was reported that Tadeo's family had been forced to arrange for the child and his father to leave the country after they were detained earlier this month.
As KUT News in Austin reported Monday, Victor Martinez Nieto, Tadeo's father, is now set to be deported to Mexico with his son, rather than risk the child entering the Trump administration's custody following their detention.
Martinez Nieto was taking Tadeo to a children's soccer match in Austin on August 16 when he was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a traffic stop. The father and son were eventually taken to South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, 150 miles away from home—a facility that has been condemned by Democratic lawmakers and rights groups as detainees, including children, have reported medical neglect, abuse, and poor living conditions.
The administration has refused to release Tadeo to his mother, who lives in Austin, Texas, or other family members. The Department of Homeland Security has routinely claimed that "ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates" if their parent is deported, but Tadeo's case is the latest in which that statement has been called into question.
Casar, a Texas Democrat who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said he was with Tadeo's mother on Monday "as she found out what it means to have your child held hostage by ICE."
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Casar, "arrested 5-year-old Liam and refused to safely return him to his mother. As a result, unless Liam's parents 'agreed' for him to be deported with his father, Liam could be entirely separated from his family and put into custody."
Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, a lawyer for the family, told KUT News that Martinez Nieto was planning to return to Mexico with his son out of fear that Tadeo would be placed in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which oversees "unaccompanied" immigrant children.
"Children can be held in this system for months or even years at a time. It's a really bad experience for children, and the family is just not willing to risk Liam being held alone,” Lincoln-Goldfinch told the outlet.
More than 20,000 children in the custody of ORR have lost access to legal representation under the Trump administration, as ORR has ended federal contracts with groups that provide legal services.
Lincoln-Goldfinch told KUT News that Tadeo's mother is trying to determine how to reunite with her son, who was supposed to start kindergarten in Austin the week he was detained.
A video recorded at a gas station in Lake Worth, Florida, shows an ICE/Border Patrol demanding ID from a U.S. citizen. When the citizen asks why, the agent responds, "Because you're an immigrant." Before even verifying his identity, fascists grab his hands and place him in handcuffs. Bystanders immediately step in to question how someone can be arrested without even being identified first, but the fascists ignore them and walk the man to their vehicle.
This encounter highlights a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures. Requiring someone to prove their citizenship before being handcuffed, based solely on an arbitrary claim, demonstrates a concerning violation of constitutional rights by a paramilitary acting without accountability.

On Monday August 17th 2026 I toured the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), along with 6 other members of a group called 'Community Not Cameras', to get a better understanding of how the surveillance cameras located around the city, worked and how the data these cameras collect is stored and used.
I went in hoping to be reassured, but left with far more concerns about the many ways the extremely minimal security measures put in place to restrict data from the cities surveillance systems could be circumvented.
At times the meeting was tense, and I'll explain what caused one of the SPD employees to suddenly stomp out of the room, twice.
It was honestly shocking for me to hear that these two things can coexist and I would like to share the discussion which was correctly moved for being off topic from the above linked post.
I think we owe it to ourselves to discuss topics like this with an open mind.

Anarchist communities [especially in real life] need humans otherwise there is no community. GenAl is a stolen facsimile of a human who can never understand morals or praxis. It can never understand freedom or control. It will however poison our communities (look at what SpaceX/Anthropic is doing in Memphis, TN) make us more predictable (and thus easier to control) and isolate us from other humans within the community which is so important to us.
Even with the most moral genAl you can possibly have, one that is totally FOSS and self hosted on a single gaming GPU, a lot of this is still true.
Obviously, this is the wrong place but I have to ask, [prior to moving the discussion to this thread] what makes you think the extreme negatives of genAl (specifically to the anarchist community) can be excused?

I pirate and seed. I'm also a fan of the megathread And for the most part, I think data is data. However there is a big difference between my pirating a book like the Lord of the Rings (which is credited and I can see the title of) and how Meta scraped Anna's archive and funneled all that data into an approximation of all combined work.
If I pirate the book, the Lord of the Rings to read it. I might enjoy it, I might talk about it to others, quote it, share it with my daughter, I might use the ring of power an an allegory for authoritarian control with a powerful technology, I might even decide to buy my own copies of the book.
What Meta did and then released as open source, won't allow a person the freedom to do any of that. The works were consumed and are used in silence to camouflage as human thought. No credit will ever be contributed. And so no one can even hope to appreciate the original works that was used in training.
The other concerns I have with (local) genAI that I think are deeply important to anarchists specifically.
