I'm new to lemmy, came from reddit. What's the lemmy etiquette like? How different is it from reddiqutte?
I'm new as in this is my first day using lemmy. I don't know anything about lemmy etiquette and don't want to do anything bad
thanks and have an amazing day! also plz be kind :D

One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.
Isn't the up / downvote just like karma?
Karma on reddit tracks the accumulated likes and dislikes a user has gotten on all of their posts. Lemmy does not have a number like that.
Edit: What this means in practice is that on Reddit there are some users who make a lot of low-effort posts to get that karma number to go up and get a sense of accomplishment from that (even when they get a negative reputation among the other users), whereas on Lemmy that's not really a thing. Lemmy has power-users that become well-known, but they're more well-liked because they aim to gain actual reputation instead of just farming a karma number.
We could talli up our points but I much prefer comments under my posts the little number go up dopamine
Yes, but there's no gating based on it so it doesn't mean anything and you can turn it off.
I do snark for the art, and will live and die by it.
🧐
This was the first thing that threw me off: people here tend to comment in good faith. I’m so used to people begging the question and generally having iron clad closed minds…from Reddit.
…but here conservations have often come to conclusion where I and another user agree to disagree amicably, or one of us moves towards the other in light of new information or a logical argument.
it’s really weird…but I hope it stays like that so I can get used to it.
I mean, yes and no. Most of the userbase is that way. But there are some users (and instances) that tend to be massive pains in the ass. So build and curate your blocklist too.
I couldn't resist
it is so much nicer here and I agree people do more in good faith
so much nicer aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i like it here so much better thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
No they don't. You're lying and you know you're lying. You're just trying to suck up to the thread so you can get more karma. No one at Lemmy does that.
"lOok aT Me, i kNoW leMmY eTiQueTte. More oFteN PeoPle heRe rEply wiTH gEnuIne ComMenTs aNd In gOOd fAiTh." You're so full of it. Watch this, my comment will recieve more upvotes than you
bro forgot to add the /s

Right, that's what I meant (BTW, I'm being sarcastic so I don't mean it)
I'm sorry, but even knowing that it's sarcastic, it comes off very snarky (it's ok though)
Right, sorry. But still though, hope you like lemmy
yeah I like lemmy thanks
If you haven't already then you need to switch to Linux
Then keep reminding everyone you use Arch.
But only some distros should be used !
Arch
Debian
Mint
NixOS
Did I miss any?
I stand corrected, lol.
Nyarch Linux
Reserved for .blahaj
Peak
I have seen a video on that. I am not a 40y/o discord mod lmao (/j)
(no longer /j in this part) I'll try arch, and if I'm really that bored, I might try it, but it looks like something I don't want to get caught dead with for the next few years.
It looks like silly fun, but as they say on their own page, they don't recommend it as a daily driver, specifically because it was designed with humor in mind, not maintainability.
Could be worth spinning up in a VM or giving away on an old laptop, though...
or messing around with for fun! (I'd break the os, and reinstall mint probably)
TempleOS and Miley Cyrus Linux
only a few hundred
I knew there's thousands of distros, but didn't ever think about it that hard or visualize it, that's a lot now that I can see it!
I'm currently running KDE Linux and I must admit I like it ! The immutable system feels weird but kinda safe. But the lack of Midnight Commander is a shame ! And I guess the not working transparency in yakuake is due to it being coded for X11.
I thought KDE was a DE, not a distro? (I'm definitely wrong and offending someone, aren't I?)
They are launching an immutable distro, it just got released in beta. Still new stuff. But it being based on the latest and greatest of KDE, I was automatically attracted.
awesome! :D
"Some people say Ubuntu is for beginners because they like to feel superior. I also say Ubuntu is for beginners because I like to feel superior" - Programmers Are Human
Emacs
Don’t forget GrapheneOS and Jellyfin! Anything else you can think of? It’ll be a lot easier if they can convert everything in one go.
I plan on using mint for a while to adjust, and as a daily, and trying to install arch for the 546782376th time (I haven't tried to install yet) when I'm bored
Mint's good for my purposes
Working on it lol.
Dad doesn't want to switch to linux, because "his files" or something (libreoffice and ddg??? he uses ddg on some devices already and libreoffice is like free ms365) so if I get Frankenstein the Floor Computer running, yes, I will linux (I plan on dual booting mint/arch, but not being toxic about it)
Take advice from Detective Frank Drebin

Nice beaver.
I had it stuffed
Fair, I just like to check these things so I don't offend anyone or do anything mean. Thanks. Have a great day!
I was making light of your question ... partly to have a bit of fun ... and partly to show that the community enjoys sharing these silly little bits of movie quotes that act like memes. The one I was using is from the movie "The Naked Gun" (the original film from 1988 with Leslie Nielson)
A lot of the meme communities enjoy old slapstick movie content as there is a lot of memeable content there ... films like 'The Naked Gun' series, Hot Shots, any of the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.
Don't be afraid to test your boundaries, comment as you like but with an open mind and kind heart ... people will let you know if you've said or implied anything negative or positive. Don't be discouraged if you get no response either ... it's not a popularity contest. The longer you stay, the more you comment, the more you get to know people and the more they get to know you and eventually you become a regular part of the community.
Welcome to Lemmy and welcome to the fediverse.
Thanks, and I've seen Monty Python and the holy grail and flying circus! Very silly and memeable lol. Have a great day!
It sounds like you'll fit right in ... great to have you here ... have fun!
thanks, you too! :D
Please do not drag the same tired jokes over from reddit (e.g. broken arms). Stick around long enough to learn Lemmy's tired jokes.
Beans, how not to poop for 5 days, ed Sheeran, and I use arch btw? I’m sure I missed a bunch, too.
How not to poop for 5 days was the first fediverse legend I got to personally witness, good times
Jeans
Don't forget moths!
And Stör!
The 1 day blinding stew is good too. Also pondering orbs.
Make sure to brush up on your fern reproduction cycle as well
How often would you like to hear about Beef Stroganoff?
AI generated videos of presidentential candidates playing minecraft.
You mean we could have seen these memes before?
It's impossible to know
The narwhal bacons at midnight.
I’ll fucking bake your narwhal in a microwave at midnight, son
As someone who doesn't know the joke, fucking hilarious out of context
And no subreddits as hashtags. Oh how I hated that shit so much. I hated awards too, cluttered up discussions with bullshit award speeches. It’s so much cleaner discussing here.
every time literally any subreddit is mentioned:
r/subsifellfor r/subsithoughtifellfor r/birthofasub r/substakenliterally
(I don't know the broken arms one) I will try to learn the lemmy jokes :)
Have a great day :D nice username
It’s smaller, but more personable. It’s full of neurodivergent, queer, and tech oriented people. It has its own inside jokes—you will want to read up on beans.
Overall, I have enjoyed the experience. Sometimes, I have been surprised when people can’t detect obvious jokes or sarcasm, but then I remember how many people here are neurodivergent and try to reply with something kind and straightforward so we’re on the same page.
People tend to be very leftist compared to the rest of the internet, so it’s good to remember that the opinions here are not always representative of the world at large.
A huge chunk of Lemmy is German, and that part of the community remains a total mystery to me because I don’t speak German. They seem cool from afar.
Which communities you are able to see depends pretty heavily on which instance is your home base—I’m with DB0, and we federate with pretty much everyone who isn’t doing something detestably illegal, but LemmyWorld is much more exclusive with who they federate with, so their users don’t see the same instances that I do. Pick a home instance that fits you best because it will matter a lot as you find communities.
You will see interactions between communists and anarchists. Try to remember that you don’t have to comment on everything you might disagree with.
Welcome to the Fediverse—we’re happy to have you.
Speaking of federation, do you know if there is a site that compares federation from instances. It would be nice to make a good decision before creating an account. Like I am on lemmy.ca and have no idea what you may see that i don't. Personally I feel like lemmy.ca is good but have no comparison point other than lemmy.world I used a little.
And for OP if you browse on mobile I tried a lot of apps and settled on "Summit". It's great and stable.
There used to be this website, but the url just loads up a scam site now (I've created this issue on the project's tracker if anyone has additional info to contribute).
I don't know how technical you are, @[email protected] , but you could try running the "defed-investigator" project locally.
I'm on laptop, but thanks anyways! Have a great day :D
Thanks, have a great day! :D
I have more excuses to learn German piling up lol (I have a German friend... 2 actually, and also this platform. I wanna learn something that seems interesting to me)
Also I have diverged neurons (joke, I mean I'm nd) I'm AuDHD.
Please don't treat too different just because I'm nd yall (I've had bad experiences with ableism, long story)
Anyways thanks again :D
Wait a minute... I've seen you before... forgot where on here though.
I get around, lol. I’ve been on Lemmy for quite a while now.
My girlfriend is also on the spectrum, so I try to handle neurodivergent misunderstandings here the same way I do with her:
cunnilingus, uh, I mean, a clearly worded rephrasing of my statement.Glad you found us, it sounds like you’ll fit in well here.
Thanks
looked this up, wtf lolEach Lemmy instance has its own rules, and each community as well. Please read them before posting, because rule #3 for this community is:
I switched from reddit awhile back. It is similar, but so far have seen a lot less hostility than reddit. I don't have time for those types , so if they turn to insults rather than proper dialog I just block them, even if they weren't talking to me directly. It makes it a much more pleasant experience
Hey screw you buddy,
But seriously it is much friendlier, the only thing i do differently is i tag users who bother me or who i see being and agitator.
That way i see who it is and don't react. I also try not to block people because we all have bad days and it's kinda like killing them with no trial.
I check their other comments to see if it is just a one off, or their overarching personality type. Majority they are dicks to everyone.
Sorry. I felt this is open ended enough of a question? Have a great day!
Don't do shit like "lemmy etiquette". Just follow human etiquette and be a pleasant human and everything will be fine.
Also stop worrying so much about "doing anything bad". Sometimes you fuck up, sometimes you upset people, it's no big deal.
Don't be a jerk and you will be fine.
We are all mostly human here. Just remember that. Hope you have a great time on the fediverse!
Thanks! Have a great day, and I will remember the human :D
Because lemmy is much smaller, you tend to rub into the same users more often. So if someone comes off as abrasive, blocking them can have a notable impact on your experience.
Dogpiling is worse, and it can pay to know what instance the community you're posting in is, as the games community on hexbear is going to be different than on world.
It's much more "left" than reddit. Notably, while this instance, lemmy.ml, is the flagship instance run by the lead dev, the "ml" stands for marxist-leninist.
does ml actually stand for marxist-leninist? i remember using domains with .ml tld a long time ago with freenom's $0 domains lol.
Freenom isn't operating anymore and all free .ml domains are deactivated. I always wondered if the where able to keep the lemmy.ml domain because it was premium
And here am I thinking .ml stands for MaraLago!
Alright thanks! Also I don't know what marxist-leninist is, but it sounds like politics, so I'm gonna try a few more instances along with this but anyways have a great day! :D
it's always the pro-genocide people acting so injured on when the vile stuff they say gets a negative response
Every time.
Man, you people really don't realize the modlog is public
Oh, I'm not assuming.
"I try to not both-sides this, please ignore that I just did and am about to do so again.
"Don't you mean all lives matter?"
It be an emotional topic usually makes people more sympathetic towards the victims of genocide, not more inclined to start going "but what about both sides!"
Go back to reddit, you insufferable loser.
Do people not realize that the modlog is public, with their asses hanging out there?
ETA: Oh, I see you’ve already covered this upthread 😂
I don't even know what a modlog is lol, but I know that it's public now I guess
also I've seen you a few times, and you seem pretty chill, have a nice day! :D
It’s where the dirty laundry is kept. https://lemmy.ml/modlog
A major difference I noticed with Lemmy from my time on Reddit is communities aren't quite as rabid about strict adherence to their topic or gimmick. r/whatisthisthing banned me for seven days once for elaborating what an E6B flight computer is for. Because "This community is for IDENTIFYING the thing, not DISCUSSING the thing!" Not...so much of that around here.
Each instance has its own vibe. You joined .ml, just a fair warning that a few instances and a chunk of Lemmy users have defederated/blocked it, so you may miss out on some content. Otherwise, pretty chill for the most part.
I'm like OP from a few months ago. I joined ML because it was easy and sorta anonymous. What's the story on ML? Who defederated? What am I missing?
No major instances block Lemmy.ml, by the way. Some users take issue with the pro-communist stance of Lemmy.ml, but that's nothing new for communists to deal with.
Show me someone claiming modern day Russia is communist. I usually do not actually see this.
Nice username
"Tankie" is a strawman. It's a pejorative for Marxists and anti-imperialists, filled with falsehoods and contradictions. The purpose of calling someone a "tankie" is to turn them into this strawman in the eyes of onlookers, it terminates the conversation. An example of this is you claiming so-called "tankies" think Russia is still a socialist country governed by a communist party, which is absurd. Russia does maintain strong ties to socialist countries like China, does oppose the western Empire, and does have rising socialist sentiment in the broader population, but absolutely isn't socialist.
The PRC is socialist, though. Public ownership is the principle aspect of the economy, and the working classes are in control of the state. Huge state owned industries are the backbone of the economy, while mixed forms of ownership make up the small and medium firms. Socialism isn't the absence of private property, even under Mao and the Gang of Four there were still large numbers of private firms.
As for what you call "authoritarianism," what we communists support is the working class using state authority against capitalists. Authority should be used by the working classes. This confusion of yours is why you misunderstand China. The PRC is by no means "late stage capitalist," rather it's relatively early in socialist development:
All in all, I suggest you listen more to these so-called "tankies," rather than letting your imagination run wild.
Literally no one fucking claims that Russia is communist. You’re just here to spout utter bullshit. GTFO.
At this point you might as well just say that they're "pro-badguyism", because you're operating on the level of Saturday morning cartoon logic where villains are evil for evils sake. Like seriously: "They just clumsily try to disguise themselves as being communists, but actually they just love evil!"? Are you listening to yourself?
Bullshit. Find me one Lemmy admin who agrees with you. The only people who believe it are non-admins with Russiagate derangement syndrome.
Okay, then present your overwhelming mountain of evidence, senator McCarthy.
Prove it, McCarthy.
Are people who claim to be leftists but turn out to be full blown NeoMcCarthyists tankies?
So you're not a tankie because you don't call yourself a communist?
No major instances have blocked Lemmy.ml as far as I know, and users blocking Lemmy.ml doesn't prevent us from seeing their content.
50501.chat blocked lemmy.ml, but who cares
Holy shit! That’s why a lot of my old communities haven’t been subscribed to yet.
From a really sad lemm.ee refugee. I miss that instance.
Any suggestions of chill instances just for tech, games and comics?
Nah, Lemmy.ml isn't really blocked much. No major instances block it as far as I know. Lemmy.ml is just fine as an instance for tech, games, and comics, just post here!
discuss.tchncs.de is tech-focused :) It seems like there are no communities for games and comics yet though.
Aren't we all migrated to .zip?
Hey, do you have a channel or blog on theology? Your username sounds familiar to me.
No i don't, sorry
Yes we are!
https://youtu.be/PNVEQgXsBgs
Where’s that damn memo?
You can replace .ml with any Lemmy instance. The most Lemmy thing remains all the instance tribalism.
Yes, but a new user needs to know the instance they join has pros and cons. Like another user stated, they joined .ml after lemm.ee closed and didn't know why several communities they had subscribed to weren't showing up.
Let's be real for a second, lemmygrad, .ml and. hexbear are well known for blocking and being blocked on Lemmy. Users should know Lemmy isnt like reddit where each user can potentially see 100% of content, it's dependent on your instance.
Lemmygrad an Hexbear sure. Nobody will recommend those as servers to start off.
.ml however is a pretty general server which is federated very broadly. It's not a bad place to start off.
Welcome! Lemmy is like Reddit was in its infancy.
Don't be a jerk and you'll be fine. :)
Well here if you disagree with someone do not engage just insult their beliefs and type ‘tankie’…wait you’re on .world right?
No need to show off. Don't be a snarky asshole. Be nice to people, but be real. Don't be afraid to be weird or answer with an autistic essay. It's okay to dissent, just don't be a fucking asshole about it. Realize that on Reddit, that shit is all bots and Nazi trolls and meek confirming bitches afraid to be real and tell shitty people that they're wrong and exactly why. Welcome. Prepare to have your eyes ripped open.
By ratio, there are way more communists than on Reddit. There are three major groups, anarchists, Marxist-Leninists, and liberals, and each instance tends to have more of one or maybe 2 than the others. Getting a feel for instance culture goes a long way.
Me too! I have been browsing for a month or two and Reddit finally had enough of my “violent rhetoric”. This is like my second post.
So what I am gathering is that here I CAN say that I believe that the only solution to capitalism is a revolution so violent and thorough that Mao would be uncomfortable?
Or nah?
Niche communities are small/sparse, so commenting and posting there will be especially appreciated.
It's fairly strafight forward, i just try and follow these two rules.
It’s pretty much the same but on Reddit it’s ok to be combative and rude with people as long as public opinion approves. Also most of the posts are bots so you aren’t actually being rude to a person there most times.
Please don’t do that here. There are way less bots here so please remember you are speaking to actual humans.
Also political discourse is mostly ok here. Same rules apply with rudeness though. On Reddit you will get quarantined or shadow banned quickly with anything politically charged.
I hope you like beans
Beans?
Bean-posting is the inside joke around Lemmy. Every once in awhile, the whole place goes ape over beans.
how y'all feel about green beans?
My best advice is that if it seems inactive, that means you should subscribe to a bunch of stuff and switch to hot, top 6 hour and scaled. Active is the default and seems the least active.
The comments in this thread will give you a great idea on how most people act around here. Hate the idea and not the user and you should be fine.
Your "also plz be kind :D" comment tells me that you're going to go through a bit of withdrawal on the hate and drama. It's great here even even though we have a few trolls and bots.
Bots turn down from 10 to 3
Trolls turn down from 11 to 4 (depending on the instance)
Downvotes don't mean anything and your comments can't generally be buried.
Mods/Admins are generally far less petty
Most instances are more open about things that are posted, even if the inhabitants of that instance are less accepting of it.
Every instance has it's own ettiquite, be sure to read the stuff in the welcome.
If you follow these, you'll be fine:
Don't hate on minorities
Don't post AI content outside of communities made for it
Don't insert yourself into communities where you don't belong, eg:
DO NOT post anything negative about Linux (unless you're comparing it to BSD, of course)
Sometimes it's a bit harder not to offend than on reddit, because posts may hit your front page from an instance that was created as a safe space for a group you're not part of, and they may react harshly to you budding in.
You can criticize China, there's just good ways and bad ways of doing that. Overwhelmingly, "critique" just means dogmatically repeating red scare-style nonsense seeing China as an enemy, and not genuine critique.
I was banned for a meme comparing old cars to modern ones, probably because it said the modern cars are full of computers made in China.
Modlog link?
If I had a nickel for every time someone lied about why (or even whether) they were banned, I’d have like a bunch of nickles.
Probably could even buy something with those.
ahem
it was a different user
Also because marginalized people are allowed here. Will be a great lesson in not being a dick!
being marginalized and being offended by stupid shit have nothing to do with one another.
plenty of marginalized people have senses of humor and are thick skinned. it's mostly the privileged over educated types who get offended by everything and on behave of everyone.
More referring to the fact that being personally attacked is more likely to offend most people than bigotry against a third party. Not enough people say pointlessly cruel things about men or white people as classes.
Can we aim upwards instead of to a shithole?
Thank you~!
Both are true!
where i live, perceived bigotry against a third party is seen as way more offense than personal attacks. like people will go out of their way to twist your words to make them seem offensive because it gives them a reason to be upset.
So where you live, people like to make shit up to get mad about? What if you leave that where you live, and try to be a bit more understanding here?
"Why can't you be a good one and let me say the word around you??"
Note that actual serious criticism of China is fine. If you want to critise their support of the Khmer Rouge, or their inaction on Palestine, or things like that, no one will mind. It's just when all you're doing is mindlessly reciting vacuous anti-China jingoism that you run into trouble.
Wow, they did you dirty on this one. You were clearly being silly about other dude's username.
Yeah. My first PTB, probably
sorry, but your username was kinda asking for it, and I meant it in a lighthearted way. Sorry if it was on the wrong day, or if it was offensive.
I'd add that you should be able to criticize anything you want on Lemmy. Sometimes you are right and the whole world is wrong. Especially if some Chinese Linux distro messed up your laptop. /s
You can post whatever you want on Lemmy without any moderation, just fire up your own instance.
No one will stop you and no one can ban you. But no one is forced to stay federated with you, or allow your content on their servers, either.
amen.
I use Arch, by the way.
I am also definitely over thirteen, and hope I can use arch soon btw (I need a pc case and power supply?)
You definitely need a power supply.
Definitely. There's 2 supply plugs on my motherboard. Do they both need to be plugged in? I'm really new to pc building, and my parts are retired parts from the old hospital (dad works there, new hospital was recently built) which 90% don't go together, and for every part, there's a 50% chance it's already toast
Haha FAFO, I guess. The big plug definitely needs to be plugged into the mobo.
I'm assuming mobo is motherboard, I'm getting a new power supply so I can power it, because I don't have any on either of my current 2 that match the smaller one (I assume small one is for cpu?)
It's a MSI B150M Mortar, iirc
The only reason I don't is that I'm too stupid to setup BTRFS snapshots and full disk encryption with LVM on it.
Linux is gay (praise)
Something something shark attacks
BLAHAJ?
Relevant xkcd
oh ok
that is me messing with computers be like: (I'm currently like the 6 hours)
Yup haha we've all been there!
haha yeah thanks
I'm doing stuff with it and hoping frankenstein the floor computer works
alright, thanks, also I don't ai, though I have been told once or twice that I sound like it in my writing (it's not ai, I'm just autistic, see you on monday) and I try not to politics, because that makes me stressed and confused, so I think it should be good.
If you're not a woman, it's likely best to block (as in - ignore) that channel, so you don't participate by a mistake. The rules there forbid non-female participation.
I get 50/50 upvote/downvote ratio for that, so no. Some of the users are unhinged though on "USA bad so China is good".
He called the women Females!
Do NOT mention Nicole.
Wait, shi-
Post frequently. Comment frequently. Make some friends/acquaintances. Try to remember that the folks making posts and comments are generally human (more so than on reddit). Try to be kind. Don't pay too much mind to inter-instance drama unless it's in a light-hearted and fun way (it's simply not worth it otherwise), or has a real impact on your experience (in which case use the blocking tools). If someone named Nicole PMs you ignore it and maybe let your instance's admin team know.
I've been here for two years now. It's generally a great group and I'm happy I joined the API-ocolypse migration from reddit. Welcome! :)
If you use any Microsoft product, keep that to yourself...
I have a hatred towards ms... except that 20 year old laser mouse... that is the only good thing they have ever made.
It's the same shit, lemmy has it's own flavour of power hungry unhinged mods (see yepowertrippingbastards /c/[email protected] ). And due to multiple instances some of the vocal users are affected by tribalism (as in "my instance is better, your instance is xyz").
just don't be homophobic, transphobic,or sexist and you're a-okay with me <3
Less bots.
Fewer bots.
The same number of grammar arseholes though.
I can't decide whether to upvote or downvote this, but I think I like you.
Fewer grammar arseholes on Reddit because the bots don't make grammar mistakes
*assholes
;)
We aren't all yanks, you know.
You're not on reddit, so you can call them grammar Nazi's here.
Way more grammar and spelling aholes, lol. About 50% are false positive because I have large hands and shit eyes…but the other half are appreciated.
But without bots how will I know when I accidentally post a haiku and what political ideology is right!
That’s an offensive stereotype. Some of us are autistic humanities nerds who are trying to be helpful, but come off as know-it-all and rude!
what did they say?
First thing, Lemmy is in need of content and likes recruiting. Hence you got 315 replies, heh.
Basically, if you aren’t a bigot, you don’t have to worry about what you say. You can be politically incorrect in any direction and not get a global/shadowban from the Fediverse.
Each instance has its own flavor and etiquette.
It's mostly the same: discuss in good faith, don't brigade, votes are for quality not for agreement, fuck spez
Votes are intended for quality, always, but they get used as an agree/disagree, always.
All the lurkers said hi!
Mostly the same. There are some differences you’ll figure out as you go but my favorite is that there is no Karma. I like that people aren’t posting to “win”.
There is some debate over how upvotes and downvotes should be used since it’s not for Karma, but honestly it’s not that big of a deal. Upvotes will make it easier for other people to find the post. Downvotes make it harder. That’s it, more or less.
Welcome home!
This feels like the early days of Reddit. Smaller communities and a greater degree of authenticity.
Just be respectful of the rules and other users. I've encountered a few people just looking to start shit, but way less frequently than on what I experienced on Reddit.
So when I came here from Reddit I didn't know what to pick, so I picked .world figuring it would be bigger or something. Over time it seems like people are saying that .ml is just horrible. I actually thought that .ml stood for militant full of right wing tankies ( don't know the exact definition of that either). Lately someone essentially berated me for being on the worst one. Just now, I went to the little pull out on the side to see how to change it and what the options were and didn't even see how to do that.
Bottom line, I have no clue how any of this works. I just wanted to see some interesting content, news from a different perspective, some fun memes, and some cool comments. I don't even understand what fediverse means other than it's kind of like borg technology, meaning that the information is spread across a bunch of servers instead of a single point of failure.
Maybe one day I'll look into all of this, but seriously I have a life. As long as I open it and get what I want, I'm good. I almost never post because they are almost always removed for violating some rule. The last time I posted a question on a Linux forum and was getting some really good answers only to have it removed for violating a rule I didn't even understand. LOL.
Good luck to you.
I'm here for over a year and I still don't get much of what's going on here.
For example, why posts are titled "rule".
NEW KID!!! GIVE HIM A WEDGIE!!!!
Noogie
Then tell them they're part of the gang and to join everyone else as we go wedgie and noogie the next new guy
gang? what gang? who's a part of it?
wait I'm part of it? coool
im not even sure what reddiqutte was.
Shitting on someone's opinion that differs from yours.
at first I was like. wtf. where did that come from. then I got it.
it was a part of reddit until the the digg exodus. after that it stopped being relevant. so it was only relevant in the first 5 years of the site really.
It was supposed to be "act like a good human being" but everyone ignores it, which sucks
Hello, and welcone to Lemmy. Glad you made it, here's my overall advice:
Enjoy your time here!
No ads disturb on here so reddit is worse.
I didn't use reddit much outside of a few niche communities, it had a repetitive brand of humor and weird dogpiling I didn't jive with. Here, I find people genuinely want to engage, with moderation suited to a more mature crowd, at least in the communities I hang around.
There are culture shifts between instances and communities, so I try to have a look around before I speak up. Some places you gotta lurk to get a feel, others are a free for all. I stepped on a few toes while I got my footing — just read the sidebars if you want to avoid that.
Browsing by subscribed is the best experience, in my opinion. I see every instance so ALL is a cacophony of back alley circus heretics if I don't tailor my feed.
Here are some useful tools I picked up in my time here:
Check defederated instances: https://federation-checker.vercel.app/
Fediverse Observer: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list
Comparison of Lemmy instances: https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances
Lemmy apps and discussion (2 years old): https://lemmy.world/post/465785
The Lemmy Rat: https://lemvotes.org/
what is lemvotes?
it says to insert a link to give it a vote. what?
I thought votes aren't very relevant here
Votes are relevant here in a different way, without the karma. They still show support and engagement, what's popular kind of thing. Lots of downvotes can trigger a report or bots can be made to remove comments below a threshold for review.
Lemmy is big on transparency, or working toward it. Right now mods of a community can easily see who voted on every post and comment in their communities, which is helpful for tracking vote manipulation. Lemvotes is just an extra step so everyone can see it. I like it because it holds mods accountable, too, they can't just make shit up when no one can verify it.
so hows lemvotes work?
you put a url
and whats it do after that
Okay, so, the instructions aren't super clear.
For a comment you click on the rainbow fediverse icon to get to the page with the right link, because the URL needs to be the commenter's home instance. Copy/paste the URL, select "comment" and submit. It should bring you to a list of up and down votes, who made them, and when.
For vote history, it's just [email protected] for me, for example. Select user, submit.
Posts need to be from the poster's home instance as well, same deal, hit the rainbow coloured icon to get the link.
Newer stuff might not be federated yet, so you may get an error or not see the most updated info. Users with a lot of votes will take a minute or more to load as well.
oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok thanks! have an amazing day, wouldn't have known that without you saying
No prob, just happen to be putzing around and remembered what a pain it was to figure that out. Have fun!
thanks you too! :D
We run Arch, BTW.™
Honestly not really that different from Reddit. My only warning is make sure to check the community a post is from that you see on 'main'. There's a couple female only communities and holy shit do they get pissed if you accidentally comment because you found a topic interesting enough to but didn't check that it was a female only community.
The lemmy instance you choose (for example, you chose .ml) to join will have its own tone, flavor, rules, politics. You will find instances that are left, right, and center. Additionally you will find some that are VERY far-left or VERY far-right. If you are finding the tone for the lemmy community (equivalent of reddit subreddit) different that your position, it may be because its hosted and moderated on an instance with that particular bend.
You may also experience some judgment from others because of the instance you are coming from as it can communicate some of your positional bias. Some users have chosen to relocate to other lemmy instances once they get an understanding of what ideas live where.
All of that said, while lemmy and the fediverse has a much smaller userbase than Reddit, it is so much nicer here. My last post to reddit was over 2 years ago, and every post I hear about how bad it is getting over there confirms this is the better place here.
All I (mostly) get on reddit is spam and bots, despite trying to find humans on there.
12 days, I'm already so glad I swapped.
Welcome!
Lemmy in its core is a supportive little communities of enthusiasts.
Just try to keep high level of discussion and be friendly in our home :)
Similar to Reddit. Everything here seems to be more tech oriented and most communities are much quieter than reddit.
Also be prepared to follow the same topic/community across multiple servers. Reddit is older so the default community for a given topic had been established. Not so much here
We can change that right now!
I'm doing my part!
Not Necessarily all that well!
Pay attention to the instance and community a post is in before commenting
Rule 1: be decent
Rule 2: follow rule 1
Just don’t say anything right of center and you’ll be gucci.
walter is clearly saying something and is right of center framing, take this down immediately /s
Average user age is slightly more older here.
The three most common groups are .world(liberals), .ml(socialists), and .blahaj(uwu)
Maybe the largest difference for me is how the federated nature changes the social dynamics. For instance, people from Instance X don’t like those from Instance Y, or may even ban them.
This was prevalent on Reddit, buuuut banning can be instance or node based compared to subreddit.
I likely have some opinions or takes I wouldn’t post on lemmy.ml because lemmy.ml has a particular bent. I agree with a lot of it, but I wouldn’t want to offend with what doesn’t align or would get me banned. The ban cascades further out, and how servers interact as wholes with one another in terms of federation is similar.
The social platform mechanics are also different. Upvote has a different impact compared to Reddit (I don’t fully remember the specifics). I think saving has its own relevancy or something?
It’s mostly the same though.
i would just point out that lemmy is merely a single platform swimming in the fediverse content waters.. there are other options that provide differing features while interacting with the same or more content. see https://fedidb.com/
im an mbin cheerleader
I definitely made a mastodon when I was looking for alts of all large services I use
Welcome!/I'd say look for communities that fit your interest, read the rules and get involved. We are not that many people here so I encourage you to post content, comment, etc.
Also use the block function and curate your fediverse experience :)
Hope you like it here.
Thanks! Have a great day!
As others have said, lemmy.zip might be a better instance for you than .ml.
In general, I'd say people are nicer here, more arguments in good faith, which I like.
Politics range from socialism to anarchism. Any thread on any topic is a good place to discuss Linux. No one cares about how many upvotes people have. You may need to actively explore communities and join them if you want. It's a bit like free software, if you think something is lacking, participate with more content and build up the community. Free software is great, what's your favorite distro?
😁😁😁
Especially if you use Arch Linux.
I use Arch Linux, by the way.
Fav distro? I installed mint once on my grandma's barely functional computer, only distro I've used.
SO MUCH BETTER THAN WINDOWS OMG IT'S SUCH A BIG BREATH OF FRESH AIR
there isn't any lemmy equitte
there is equitte for each instance. that's up to the people who admin the instance and usually boils down to political beliefs.
fair... I was kinda wondering general stuff shared between most instances (like be a decent human being) but thanks anyways
It's basically the same. Lemmy is kind of what reddit felt like before it got huge and astroturfed, it's smaller which can be as much a benefit as a detriment depending what your after. I find interaction here tends to feel more human than reddit, on reddit comment threads especially in political subreddits you already know what the comments are gonna say before you get there, here i feel as though there is a bit more genuine thought. That being said Lemmy is not immune to echo chambers or trolls, as any bit of the internet is. Just use as you would use reddit honestly and just know your likely not to see as much content, but the content you see will get a more GENUINE feeling interaction. That's my take anyhow.
corporate koolaid frequently masquerades as 'knowledge', and is parroted rather than built up from first principles.
compared to reddit, an average lemmy user would tend more towards the latter than the former.
be on the lookout for the cognitive dissonance which can precede the realisation you've been parroting corporate propaganda. it's ok, it happens to all of us, but the sooner we realise the better for everyone.
thanks
We all swim in the sea of ideas that is our culture. Many people for many reasons seek to make certain ideas the dominant ones.
Instances are a big difference. Most interfaces, apps, clients for Lemmy will show you the instance (server) in which a user registered their account. There are kind of "instance wars" inside Lemmy, because, between these "wars" they believe an instance, in general, bears their flag and support some kind of ideology.
Please, talk to other users as people, no matter their instance, don't ever judge them for that.
Don't be a dick. If you want to be negative that's fine, but be prepared with a litany of sources.
If I'm going to be wrong, I'd rather know I'm being wrong, so I like when people add sources
I try not to be negative, and most stuff I would argue about that needs a source, the source could be found in 3 seconds or less, depending on your internet speed.
Nobody cares about sources literally anywhere, that's not how brains work and in fact may increase hostility in many cases. Human brains are not rational machines.
Just make sure you're actually funny.
Just because it doesn't work doesn't mean we shouldn't normalize it.
I generally agree with offering sources; I just wanted to add a funny.
Just because nobody cares doesn't mean we shouldn't try to normalize them.
Why?
most people aren't writing papers on lemmy.
citing your sources is for academic/professional work, not casual conversation on the internet or irl.
And I'm saying it should be normalized, especially for high-emotion and controversial topics. It shouldn't just be for academic or professional work, but for casual conversation, too. I don't think people should necessarily be forced to post sources every time, but they should definitely be encouraged to do so when asked.
Misinformation and disinformation are an extinction-level threat for our species. I'm not exaggerating. And I think that being forced to at least have a source can help.
You're basically saying everyone has to get PhDs and only ever talk as as if they are an academic conference. Otherwise they should shut up and not be bale to ever contribute to any conversation.
Do you not see the patent absurdity of that expectation?
Further, being an academic and have a PhD doesn't make you less susceptible to misinformation and disinformation. I have known tons of PhDs and other highly educated professionals who believe in healing crystals, astrology, and other magical thinking nonsense.
Lemmy is like an unintuitive, user-unfriendly reddit. And everyone likes it that way. I'm not leaving bc i want to support open-source shit, but I'm hoping it gets more user friendly someday.
It's okay shirt brother. Welcome and enjoy the ride.
Sometimes I'll call you a dumbass, but if I do, you were probably being a dumbass.
this makes a lot of sense, and I hope you mean as in I'm doing something dumb
I do not subscribe to the idea that people are dumb, stupid, idiotic, etc
If I call someone one of those, it's how they're acting, I assume same with you? (If so, fair enough)
I’d say most folks at Lemmy are actively trying to grow the communities and the Community and so are genuinely welcoming and helpful.
I’d ask you to bring your friends and family. This might be controversial because Lemmy tends to attract amazingly talented tech geniuses — but others should be welcomed here as well.
I’m here to watch the corporate owned hegemonic control of all social media crumble— so I say we grow the Fediverse a great deal. Of course it’s not big enough to take the whole world but perhaps slow and regular growth will be met with the kind of independent commitment needed.
Anyway: WELCOME. Look. I wasn’t afraid of all caps. We’ll see how that goes.
Welcome friend! Unless youre French Canadian, in that case you can fuck right off
Most Lemmy etiquette is pretty easy to follow. Just check the sidebar for rules before you post or comment. Etiquette is slightly varied among instances, but generally be nice and you'll do fine. You may catch bans from communities you don't participate in depending what you post, but try not to pay it to much mind.
Some instances or communities are explicitly heavily moderated (see Blahaj, Beehaw, and others) and preemptively ban people for comments and posts elsewhere. Most likely it's nothing personal, and you wouldn't have gotten much from those communities if you are posting counter to their purpose.
Other than that enjoy your time here!
Hey, welcome to Lemmy! Hope you like it here :)
As in everywhere on the Fediverse, there is no consistent etiquette for every place, as different people concentrate in different places. But overall, if you're nice to others, they will be nice to you!
For the most part, Lemmy is politically left, LGBTQIA+ friendly, privacy-minded, welcomes copyleft and piracy, loves to get geeky. The most loud audiences are IT crowd and scientists, but people from all walks of life are present.
If you don't fit into something, it's alright - you cannot be globally banned by anyone but your instance admin, and even then you can move on to another instance. Downvotes also mean nothing and don't downrank your posts and comments. There's no karma system - technically, servers do record your up- and downvotes, but they don't affect anything at all.
Still, be nice and you'll be warmly welcomed by the community. Here, you have a real chance to become a legend!
I don't see much difference between here and Reddit tbh. The major difference, however, is the in-fighting amongst the instances here, namely the tankie instances such as .ml and hexbear versus the rest of the fediverse.
Me too, came from reddit.
Unless it's a meme reference (lol same) comments are generally more thought out and well constructed, as you can see from the replies here.
You can say anything, but always better to have an account on two or three politically different instances in case you want to critisize USA, China, or any controversial thing in the world.
But if you ain't an asshole, you're welcome! Have a nice journey into the fediverse!
if youre not trans or queer youre at a massive posting disadvantage and must post 10x more to keep up
reddiquette died in like 2012. Just how old of a reddit user are you
Hate ai
Their extremely nerdy, libral and demand perfect-speling and gramer nazis.
The community can mostly feel like it was skimmed off the top layer of ornery “erm, aktually” types from Reddit. The etiquette here is what you would expect from that. The days of “remembering the human” are dead and buried.
Like all places online, people and sub-communities vary, but that’s mostly the vibe I get whenever browsing the comments of just about anything that hits my instance’s All page.
I’ll take it any day over dealing with Reddit Inc’s chicanery, I guess.
I much prefer the "urhm akctchually" here to the content farming there
yeah nah I agree
Lemmy still has its flaws at times, nowhere is perfect or fills the hole other spaces online that have gone shit have left
I can at least take solace in knowing that there are like, actual people here. even if some of them suck sometimes
absoloutely I prefer arguing with ignorant and stubborn people (or jerks) than bots and trolls
it's the same but it's worse
I have been here 13 days, already billions of times better
I'm confused what parts of reddit and lemmy you're on
