Used PC that supports 3+ 3.5" Drive Bays? For Selfhosting NAS and Immich

Hi All. I have some hardware from 2007 that is currently "in use" as a failed NAS which I leave powered off. I get weird hardware errors and the capacitors on the motherboard look questionable. It is also an obsolete processor (AMD Athlon 64 X2) so I would basically need to buy at least a new motherboard, cpu, and ram, which is why I'm leaning towards a new (to me) used computer.

My main question is, what desktop computers on the used market would support 3 or 4+ SATA connections to hard disks, and/or room in the case for 3 or 4 x 3.5" Hard Disks? They are the most valuable part of my "NAS" and ideally I would like to reboot the operating system from these disks in a new hardware system.

I am looking for the most economical option, but I would be ok saving up for the appropriate part. I want the new system to be a NAS, I want to install immich on it, and possibly with a graphics card so I could run Immich's machine learning / image organizing functions on it.

Other parts I could reuse, but don't have to:

  • Cooler Master Case (there are some things iffy/wrong with it, like broken USB 2 ports.
  • Caicos XTX [Radeon HD 8490 / R5 235X OEM]
  • Sound Card: C-media CMI8738/CMI8768 PCI Audio
  • Several 2TB hard disks and one 128 GB SSD.
  • monitor
  • speakers

Here is my most recent hardware probe -- the hard disks are out of date, but the rest is fairly accurate: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=8028d0a8d1

There were some reddit threads coming up with this search, but I wanted to ask here as well. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Used+Computers+with+3.5%22+drive+bays&ia=web

Thanks for your thoughts!

Learning to mask as you grow up leads to other problems?

Found this article posted to another community, and thought to cross post it here.

The gist of the article is that girls suffer in silence because they don't match the profile of boys with ADHD, but i found myself relating to it very much, even though I'm not a girl, and my parents did know pretty early.

Key Paragraph:

And like many other issues regarding mental health, hiding only makes it worse. The effort to perform as neurotypical is more common among girls and begins in early adolescence. A girl will study how other kids behave and copy it, suppressing the urge to move and turning a fear of mistakes into perfectionism that, from the outside, reads as being a strong student. The research on the cost is consistent: higher camouflaging tracks with greater anxiety, depression, and lower quality of life. By June, the reserves are gone, and the mask that is held through every class period tends to shatter the moment she feels safe, usually at home.

So i spent my childhood trying to fit in but also be myself. My parents were pretty sure i had ADD (inattentive) by first grade, because I was a boy, and i didn't really pay attention in normal ways and never really understood why i should do what everybody else was doing in school, or even notice that it was time to do that.

But as I grew up and especially in high school, i tried my best to work super hard and try to be smart and get good grades (one of my biggest innovations was to do my homework on the bus every day before i got home from school and got distracted) but also i got in the habit of guilt tripping myself to get work done, "stop being lazy, etc.,"

This worked until it didn't and i burn out pretty hard and got pneumonia as my body physically collapsed under the pressure of junior year. I'd say that set the tone for my life since then -- try to do a good job, lose energy and fail.

My life recently has been about trying to relearn how to be productive and still be true to myself while also dealing with all the baggage from trying to force myself to achieve good grades and do the best i could.

Can anyone relate to this broadly? Have you found anything to help you understand it or overcome it?

Could heating oil subsidies be reduced or replaced with subsidies for installing electric heating and houses.?

Oil and Gas get massive subsidies every year, but a huge part of it are the very popular heating oil subsidies that keep people alive in the winter. Could these be reduced or replaced if instead the government gave money towards families purchasing electric heaters and spending their money on that?

Edit: USA but i assume the problem is not uniquely ours

How does Banned work?

I was reading a comment section and I saw that some people were banned, but the comment wasn't removed. This got me to thinking: how are banned and removed treates on the threadiverse?

When a moderator bans someone, do they choose whether to remove the comment, or leave it up for all to see if that is better?

Is it that some clients autoremove banned users, and some don't?

Do some clients allow banned users to still poat in the community they're bannes from, and it is up to the client to decide whether to show it or not?

What is going on?

A linux gamer asks, "How do I install windows for just one game?"

There is a game I am considering getting; it has been out for a few months now, and the devs are specifically blocking it from running under proton with a Kernel Level Anticheat which specifically blocks linux.

Folks on the discussion boards made the point tht it is technically possible to install windows for just one steam game, so I am looking for a guide on how to do that?

I've heard that if you don't activate windows, you can still use it, and if you get the LSTC (?) Version of windows, it is not so annoying.

Does anyone have a guide for how to install windows alongside linux for one game?

If we have a discussion in the comments about whether it is tactically appropriate to give money to a game corporation that requires windows, i guess we can, but i would rather learn how to install windows in the least annoying way possible.

Government photo Id questions

A friend of mine has to get their photo ID renewed. We are pretty sure this opens them to the risk of being automatically facially identified by the government and anyone who has access to the government database.

Is it worth them trying to grow out a long beard and hairstyle to partially cover their features for the photo ID or would it be better for them to try to be clean shaven and then walk around society with the beard and hair?

In Linux Mint, if I have an upgrade that is taking a long time, can I sudo shutdown -h +60 and walk away, or is there a better way?

I don't want the system to shutdown in the middle of the upgrade, but I've already started the upgrade in the GUI.

Is there a better way, maybe involving the apt lock?

EDIT: Thank you for all the helpful suggestions. Hopefully this helps the next person. My upgrade actually finished on its own while I was posting. 😂

What is the magic sysreq combination?

Buried in the Wikipedia article is what I remember, with a note saying not to use it any more.

So what sysreq keys do you use to recover a non responsive system with a journaling file system?

Before the advent of journaled filesystems a common use of the magic SysRq key was to perform a safe reboot of a locked-up Linux computer (using the sequence of key presses indicated by the mnemonic REISUB), which lessened the risk of filesystem corruption. With modern filesystems, syncing and unmounting is still useful to force unflushed data to disk, but is no longer necessary to prevent filesystem corruption (and may increase the risk of corruption in case the lock-up is caused by the kernel being in a bad state).^[11]^ The default value of kernel.sysrq in distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian remains 176^[citation needed]^ (allowing the sync, unmount, and reboot functions) and 438^[12]^ (allowing the same functions plus loglevel, unraw, and nice-all-RT-tasks) respectively.

[Solved] How come I can post in a lemmy community, but I can't see any of my posts in the community feed?

Some of us were talking about dropout.TV and I made a few posts on the community for dropout but the weird thing is I can't see any of them on the community directly. I can see my post if I go to the link and other people can comment on it but I don't see my post anywhere on the community feed. Is that normal or some kind of error? With Lemmy, piefed, or Blorp? Or Blahaj?

Community: https://threadiverse.link/c/[email protected]

My post: https://threadiverse.link/piefed.blahaj.zone/post/775235

EDIT: it was because the Blorp setting for "hide read posts" was on. Thanks https://threadiverse.link/u/[email protected]
