In the letter on Monday, Warren and three other lawmakers pointed to Kennedy’s ethics filings and written answers provided to the Senate Finance Committee last year, in which the secretary said he would hand any Gardasil fees to his son. The senators’ staff could find no subsequent filings ​with different information, the letter said.

Kennedy’s ​recent statement, the letter said, ⁠appears to indicate the information he previously provided “is no longer accurate and suggests that you have either modified your ethics agreement or strayed from it altogether.”

Two unvaccinated individuals have died of measles in Pennsylvania, state health officials announced on Tuesday. The deaths are the first in the state in 35 years and have been announced just one day after Maryland declared a measles outbreak in three counties.

On Monday, Maryland declared a measles outbreak in St Mary’s, Carroll and Cecil counties. There are 31 confirmed cases in the state. New York urged residents to get vaccinated on Monday, citing an uptick in cases in rural parts of the state around the capital, central and western regions.

The news comes just one week after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data showing the largest ever one-year increase in requests for vaccine exemptions – the process by which parents can request not to have their child vaccinated and still send them to school. The same data showed a long, slow decline in vaccination rates, particularly for measles.

The news also comes after Donald Trump and his health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, held a press conference in which they linked vaccines to autism, a decades-old claim from the anti-vaccine movement that has been repeatedly debunked by scientific studies.

What happened next was something that almost never happens in Indian country: a coalition of tribes and organizers banded together and drove out a mining company in a matter of days.

“We’re just not used to winning,” said Dr Valeriah Big Eagle, who directs the Black Hills work of NDN Collective, an Indigenous-led advocacy nonprofit based in Rapid City. “We’re people used to being screwed over by the government at every level.”

The changes would reduce bonds from $500,000 down to $25,000 for all wells a company drills in a state. The money is expected to cover the costs of plugging a well when it is done producing and returning the land to its original state.

“The bonds would not even cover the plugging,” Nelson said.

The rule changes would eliminate the requirement that the BLM notify split-estate landowners when the agency offers oil and gas leases under their property.

Police say Officers Luis Vasquez Jr. and Antonio Felix stopped a vehicle on Aug. 5 at around 11:30 p.m. and proceeded to use force on a man and woman.

The traffic stop was not reported, and there was no body-worn camera activation, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

An independent arbitrator has ordered the Washington Post to rehire the high-profile opinion columnist Karen Attiah, abruptly fired by the news organization last September over comments she made on social media about Charlie Kirk, the then recently slain conservative activist.

On Monday, an arbitrator ruled that the Post had violated her rights as a union-protected employee and ordered the newspaper to reinstate her and compensate her for lost wages.

The family of the young boy who alleges he was molested by former Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts Mike Caruso hoped to protect his identity. Living with the alleged assaults would be difficult enough, they reasoned. Having others know about it would make it worse.

That hope fizzled Tuesday. Shortly after Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers arrested Caruso, 67, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office mass-emailed and posted on the Internet Caruso’s eight-page arrest affidavit, with lurid details of the allegations.

The Trump administration is now dealing these rare treasures a potentially fatal blow. Last year, Republicans in Congress heaped a whopping $46.5bn for border wall expansion into Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill. The longest remaining unwalled stretch of the US-Mexico border lies in west Texas, a remote region that includes some of the state’s most-visited public lands, including the Big Bend national park.

President Donald Trump's administration on Monday released a proposed regulation ​to codify an unprecedented fee of more than $100,000 on new H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers that has been blocked ‌by the courts.

A federal judge in June ruled that the fee was illegal and blocked the Trump administration from collecting it. A Boston-based appeals court is reviewing that decision while a different court considers whether a judge properly ​rejected a challenge to the fee by a major business group.

Trump's temporary fee increase expires in September, one year after it was issued. ​The proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, posted in the Federal Register on Monday, would make a ⁠fee of $103,265 permanent. It could be finalized by the end of the year.

All remembered a scramble in the early days to figure out what everyone should be doing, as more and more troops — who were all deputized as special law enforcement and armed with a handgun — arrived. They said that despite the confusion, there was a collective effort to figure out how to be useful and effective. Military members are trained to be apolitical and follow orders.

In the early days, troops were largely assigned to help with beautification projects around the city: clearing trash along the road, bagging leaves in public parks or trimming trees at the National Mall. The guard member from West Virginia said that many of the members he had arrived with — most of whom had raised their hand for the deployment — became quickly disillusioned.

As the deployment continued, troops were assigned less to beautification projects and more to presence patrols around the city — which the task force says are an effort to deter crime — and settled into a routine that one guard member described as "mundane" and another as "monotonous."

"At some point, I found myself going, well, at least this isn't that bad. At least I'm not doing anything illegal, and that's always counterbalanced with, like, this is wasting everyone's time," one said, adding that it became clear that the "point of the mission is presence."

The latest loss came earlier this week when an arbitrator ruled that the Agriculture Department violated its collective bargaining agreement and committed unfair labor practices when it ended its telework and mandated Rural Development Agency employees represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) return to the office without negotiating the terms first.

Margaret Donaghy, the arbitrator in this case, found USDA “committed unfair labor practices (ULPs) when it engaged in bad faith bargaining and implemented a rule that conflicted with the existing agreement. The nature and scope of the agency’s breaches amounted to a repudiation of the agreement.” The agency changed the remote work and telework agreements for 135 employees, 46 of which required remote work as a condition of employment.

This arbitrator ruling on Aug. 19 is at least the 12th grievance that the Trump administration has lost over the last year. Suzanne Summerlin, the attorney for AFSCME, said different arbitrators have ruled in favor of grievances from the IRS, the departments of Health and Human Services and Housing and Urban Development, the Social Security Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Forest Service.
