Israeli forces execute unarmed man in bedroom during West Bank home raid

Mustafa Taha Mustafa al-Khatib, 32, was shot several times in the chest, head and hand during a raid on the village of Sarta, west of Salfit, according to his uncle, Yaseen al-Khatib.

Yaseen told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that Mustafa was slow to answer the door because he had been sleeping.

When he woke up, he tried to get dressed, but Israeli soldiers forced open the front door, stormed into his bedroom and opened fire on him.

He said Israeli forces prevented residents from reaching Mustafa to provide first aid. He later died of his wounds. After the troops withdrew, paramedics were able to enter the area and transfer him to the hospital.

Why Serbia's ties with Israel matter beyond Serbia

Consider what that friendship is made of, because its substance is not sentiment.

It is steel, moving in both directions. Serbian munitions flowed to Israel on dozens of cargo flights after October 2023, with exports rising dramatically over two years.

In return, Israel has sold Serbia some of the most advanced offensive military hardware in the region: rockets with a range of 300 kilometers, a $1.6 billion Elbit package with deliveries extending to the end of the decade, and a drone factory outside Belgrade in which the Israeli firm holds a controlling stake.

This is not merely a customer relationship. It is an increasingly integrated military partnership in which Israeli industry plays a central role.

Consider, too, what many Bosniaks and Albanians believe this relationship has helped legitimize. Bosnia and Herzegovina's Serb entity, Republika Srpska, placed its commission to reexamine Srebrenica under an Israeli historian, drawing on Jewish scholarly credentials in a process that many viewed as an attempt to diminish the established understanding of the genocide.

And when Milorad Dodik, who has repeatedly challenged the characterization of Srebrenica as genocide, sought relief from U.S. sanctions, the lobbyist who took the contract happened to chair Republicans Overseas Israel.

The sanctions were lifted last autumn. Belgrade and Banja Luka have learned that Israel's moral authority on genocide can be borrowed and then turned against the memory of the very Muslims, Bosniak and Albanian, it was meant to shield.

UK doctors reject IHRA definition and back protections for staff speaking on Palestine

The British Medical Association (BMA) has voted to drop the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, saying it had a “chilling effect” on free speech in the workplace.

Doctors from across Britain backed the motion at the BMA’s annual conference on Tuesday, amid growing concerns that healthcare workers are being punished for expressing views on international conflicts.

The motion called on the doctors’ union to “provide urgent guidance and support to members who face disciplinary action or professional detriment for expressing legitimate political views or ethical concerns about international conflicts, including Palestine/Israel”.

Iran’s parliament speaker rejects US claim unfrozen assets will fund American farm goods

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who heads the country’s negotiation team, on Thursday rejected a US claim that Tehran’s unfrozen assets would be used to buy American agricultural products.

“America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture,” Qalibaf wrote on US social media company X.

“The only crop we’re harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust,” he added. “It’s organic, abundant, and homegrown.”

The EU does not need to clarify its support for Israeli colonialism

Recently, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas was reported to have used the term apartheid during a visit to Mexico. Kallas has made several contradictory statements since the start of the genocide which reflect both the EU’s lack of political cohesion over sanctioning Israel, as well as the underlying concern to safeguard Israel’s impunity.

Kallas’s response to Sa’ar stating he will sever all contact was replete with the usual contradictions, except for the assertion that “The EU is always committed to a constructive relationship with Israel.” Other than that, prioritising the two-state paradigm as the only solution, while noting that the implementation is becoming impossible due to illegal settlement construction, represents the usual EU position, as reflected in Kallas’s post on X.

The two-state is not a solution, and it is not just settlement expansion that makes the two-state obsolete. It is colonialism, which the entire world refuses to address, in order to maintain Israel’s presence in Palestine.

Kallas, meanwhile, responded with the usual statements that reassure Israel of the EU’s commitment to safeguarding colonialism, despite the visible purported disagreements. Sa’ar, for example, accused Kallas of “acting obsessively and with blatant unfairness towards the State of Israel”, yet the only unfairness has been solely directed against the Palestinian people.

Colonialism is abnormal, and the EU supports it. Why, for example, did Kallas seek to placate Sa’ar instead of taking a firmer stance against Israel’s apartheid system? An utterance by a high ranking official could have been followed by at least a stronger assertion, not to mention that the EU could take political, diplomatic and economic measures that directly target Israel. Instead, the rhetoric is shifted to the two-state paradigm, which is obsolete and which Israel opposes. So much for Kallas being described as anti-Israel, when the response to Sa’ar’s complaint was to find common ground for further Israeli colonial expansion.

Venezuela earthquakes: ‘intensive’ search for survivors as death toll rises to 164

At least 164 people have died and 971 were injured in Venezuela after the country was hit by two powerful earthquakes, acting president Delcy Rodríguez said.

The latest figures mark a sharp increase from an earlier reported toll of 32 dead and 700 injured. Authorities fear the numbers could rise further as rescue efforts continue.

Yesterday’s 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes were among the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century.

Rodríguez said authorities were shifting rescue teams from other parts of the country to the hardest-hit La Guaira area, which sits north of the capital Caracas.

Anti-ICE protesters jailed for decades

Demonstrators in the US will spend decades in prison after being sentenced for taking part in a protest outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre last July.

Journalist Mehdi Hasan called the sentences “insane” and noted the hypocrisy and authoritarian nature of the punishments. A total of eight people were sentenced yesterday in Fort Worth, Texas, while three more defendants await their fate.

  • Savanna Batten, Zachary Evetts, Autumn Hill, Meagan Morris and Elizabeth Soto each got 50 years.

  • Maricela Rueda got 70 years.

  • Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada got 30 years for hiding political literature, even though he wasn’t at the protest.

  • Benjamin Hanil Song got 100 years.

The most severely punished defendant, Hanil Song, received 100 years. He attempted to protect a fleeing protester from what they described as an imminent threat of being shot by law enforcement.

In a statement, Song wrote that he fired at an officer after watching them point a gun at the back of a fleeing, unarmed protester.

Song said he was “terrified” and used the minimum force possible to stop what looked like another imminent killing. He said he never intended to hurt anyone and was “grateful” no one died.

He also pointed to history, citing a speech by white supremacist, Senator “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, from 1895, who bragged about taking power “by fraud and violence”. A pattern, Song said, is repeating itself today as the US government uses injustice to silence dissent and make an example out of ordinary people.

Heroes disrupt Dublin conference hosted by genocide-backing Microsoft

The absolute legends from pro-Palestine campaign group Your Tech Their Deaths (YTTD) have disrupted a Dublin conference hosted by the disgraced Microsoft, a company that has operated as the tech backbone of so-called ‘Israel’s’ holocaust in Gaza.

Activists at YTTD rightly aren’t prepared to tolerate this corporate abomination operating freely in Ireland. As a Microsoft employee was giving a presentation, an activist interrupted proceedings while holding a Palestinian flag. She said:

One of the customers of Microsoft is the Israeli military. Microsoft uses their computing AI Azure to help Israeli military target and surveil Palestinians. Just like IBM was helping [the Nazis] to target the Jews, Microsoft is helping to target Palestinians in Palestine and Gaza. Microsoft is complicit with their cloud and their technology in killing Palestinians.*

When a man asked her to stop, she replied: “Then you need to stop your contracts”. The activist urged Microsoft employees to join No Azure for Apartheid, as a second activist joined in.

The action was a success, causing a complete halt to the Microsoft presentation. Nearly all audience members left the room. The Canary spoke to YTTD founder Jude Farrell, who suggested that maybe “they were embarrassed to be there in the first place”. When the talk restarted, other activists who had previously remained silent then disrupted proceedings once more.

Inside Labour Together’s secret battle against Jeremy Corbyn

Newly released documents reveal the inner workings of Labour Together and its role in covertly undermining Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour party. The documents were disclosed to Corbyn in response to a subject access request. They contain emails from Labour Together’s two key figures Morgan McSweeney and Josh Simons.

McSweeney went on to be Keir Starmer’s chief of staff while Simons became a cabinet minister until he resigned following revelations that he had hired a reputation management firm to “proactively undermine” journalistic investigations into Labour Together, McSweeney and Sir Keir Starmer. Simons subsequently vacated his Makerfield constituency seat for Andy Burnham.

Internal documents detail how Labour Together under McSweeney’s watch (2017-20) conducted polling of the Labour membership to monitor its views on the incidence of antisemitism in the party. This polling allowed McSweeney and his allies to track responses to the antisemitism narrative that they were simultaneously helping to sustain by placing arguably alarmist stories in the media.

The documents further detail how The Canary media outlet was highly trusted among Labour members and identified as a political challenge because it defended Corbyn amid antisemitism accusations. The Canary was subsequently targeted by the McSweeney-linked Stop Funding Fake News campaign with an advertiser boycott, which helped to diminish its revenue.

McSweeney quietly inflamed the “antisemitism crisis” that would dog Corbyn’s leadership from at least 2018. He did so by seeding and placing stories into the press that helped to build the narrative that Corbyn’s Labour had become riddled with antisemitism and that this flowed inexorably from a resurgent left-wing anti-imperialism. At the same time, the new documents show, Labour Together was paying YouGov to repeatedly poll Labour members on whether they agreed with the framing of the party as a hotbed of antisemitism.

It was also at this time that Labour Together unlawfully failed to declare most of its donations, amounting to over £700,000, with key funders of the organisation including hedge fund manager Martin Taylor and pro-Israel lobbyist Trevor Chinn.
