Help Save Open Street Events Like Ciclavia

Metro is about to quietly end future funding for open street events. You can stop it if you act by Wednesday, July 22, at 5pm.

Why it matters: Open street events are for everyone. Cutting funding doesn't just put organizations like CicLAvia and open streets programs like ActiveSGV’s 626 Golden Streets/Active Streets at real risk. It erases opportunities for communities that don't otherwise get this kind of social infrastructure investment.

2001 Infiniti QX4/Nissan Pathfinder - what is this noise?

Sounds like gears rubbing or something. Maybe a chain or belt? Sounds like it’s coming from the front of the engine and it goes up and down in pitch with throttle.

For context, I recently got some water in the intake, but not enough to hydrolock. Changed MAF. Idles fine.

Thanks!

EDIT: I think the sound is coming from one of the belt pulleys. Upper left one?

Edit edit: I’m pretty sure it’s the alternator now. Will follow up.

Are content creators intentionally blurring the lines between AI and authentic video?

I’ve noticed that lots of videos on social media and on YouTube, specifically the Shorts, have this strange filter on them that makes them look AI generated. Even videos that I’ve seen before without the filter and know are authentic because they were created before people could make realistic AI videos.

Do you think this is intentionally done by content creators and/or the companies themselves to make AI content more easily accepted?

How to experiment with neuro-symbolic AI?

Hey all! I want to start testing neuro-symbolic AI vs. LLM's and want to know how to get into this. As I understand it, Claude Code, does this, but are there ways to use it locally?

How does it work under the hood? I know LLM's involve tokens, embeddings, weights and transformers. How does the symbolic part of it change it?

Thanks!

Connecting Solar Panels for Camping to Home

Hello! Hopefully this is the right community for this question.

I’ve started small with solar by getting a 100W panel that connects to a battery that I charge daily and use it to charge things like my laptops or other devices.

I want to start adding additional panels and sending that solar power into our home to use throughout.

As I vaguely understand it, I can get a grid-tie microinverter and then plug panels into that? Will this work? Do I need different type of panels? Do all the panels need to match in specs/watts? It has MC4 (I think?) cables and bullet output.

How are yall sending solar to your home without getting a full on roof mounted solar system?

Thanks!

EDIT: in California

How to search Lemmy like Reddit?

One of the good things about Reddit is you often have a question and there’s a post about it with a bunch of users answering and validating the answers.

I’ve tried searching posts in Lemmy and either the search feature just doesn’t seem to work or maybe nobody has posted that question before (which I find unlikely).

What’s the best way to use Lemmy like a search engine for answers like Reddit?

On the topic of privacy

Recently a user posted a comment on one of my posts about Qwen secretly sending information over the internet even if run locally.

Is there any privacy concern for locally run models to share your conversations or data? What if they can connect to the internet via a tool or MCP?

Uncensored Models Actually Uncensored?

I downloaded an uncensored aggressive Qwen 3.5 model and I can see in its reasoning that it is still limiting responses based on safety guardrails (e.g. violence, NSFW).

Anybody have recommendations for truly uncensored models?

EDIT: I turned off reasoning and I think it’s more uncensored if I’m very specific about what the response should include.

Have you tuned a model?

Apologies if this seems like a survey post. I’m just learning about tuning and want to get a lay of the land. I don’t think I have the money to tune locally so might have to rent some VRAM, but curious how much better tuning is vs something like RAG.

What model? What was your use case? What tuning tool did you use? What is hardware setup? How large was your training set and how did you create it? How effective was the model as tasks pre- and post-tuning?

Thanks!

Long term Pokemon TCG availability and pricing

When will Pokemon cards be available in stores for MSRP again? I’m wondering how long this scalper generation of Pokemon will last. Demand and prices for cards are high now because kids who collected in the past are collecting again with their own money.

Since kids of the current generation can’t even get their hands on enough cards to collect or play unless they’re parents are willing to pay a premium, they’re not going to have that nostalgia and demand when they get older and have their own money.

By that time the current adults who are buying up cards might still be into it, but maybe as they get older they’ll stop and there will be a gap where neither of those generations are buying cards and presumably prices will drop and availability will go back up. Pokemon company must be planning for this and maybe will boost supply soon to build nostalgia for future generations to close that gap. What’s their long play?
