I avoided Gnome for exactly that reason for years but the shell extensions for gnome have improved a lot and it's pretty flexible now. If you don't mind depending on the addin authors maintaining your favorites.Dash to panel or dock is virtually a whole different UI.

5

Ngl, for me both GNOME and GTK+ suck, their governance, design principles, development principles, and both user-facing and dev-facing cultures, are authoritarian and really toxic. Look at, for example, the Mutter controversy, or the controversy woth GTK4 and the subsequent creation of both MATE and Cinnamon, or the drama with Zrythm (which author I do personally support) and FalkTX, etc.

1
lemmy.world

I honestly find it odd that anyone brings up "no choices" and "lack of customisation" as a point against GNOME at all... Nothing in any desktop environment comes close to the versatility of GNOME extensions.

1

finally someone says it.

the extensions might not be core utilities of gnome and break on an update, but they allow for customization that even kde doesn't provide yet everyone is saying gnome has a "lack of customization"

2
lemmy.world

Yes, KDE included. I don't think you understand the level of flexibility that being able to monkey-patch the GNOME shell provides. And I say that as someone who loves both KDE and GNOME for different reasons.

-1

Honestly, I personally feel sorry (with every intention to offend) that you and others like you settle for and defend tooth and nail a half-baked solution, glued together with saliva and that breaks every time a core GNOME developer decides on it like monkey-patching over a shitty API. Not to mention the fact that KDE also allows it, and I say this as a KDE user, for the deepest part of its extensibility and scriptability, but without breaking it just because it looked ugly, and also allows other types of extensions, such as compiled dynamic libraries, or Plasmoids and components.

I'm a dev. I develop little prototypes and things with Rust. I often create a new repository and don't give the project a name, until I've coded enough of it that I know where it's going.

A few years back, the makers of the programming language Rust started punishing people for prepending rust- before the names of their tools and apps. They recommended that people append -rs to the end.

The combination of these two things caused me to end up with a whole bunch of repositories named something like cli-rs or clitool-rs, both of which I'd just pronounce as clitoris.

There really is no drama like programming language drama.

I wonder if Twitter just hung onto market share in India while it hemorrhaged users in the anglosphere? IIRC we've seen this with Facebook in a few places. Basically everyone I want to follow moved to Bluesky or at least is posting their content there too - there's a few local governments that are stuck in 2010 technologically due to indifference or lack of budget that still only post stuff to Twitter but that's fairly unusual, but is infuriating enough for people to post about it.

4

That's possible, I don't know literally anyone from India on Bluesky; In fact there's more people I personally know who are on Mastodon as it's prevalent in the FOSS ecosystem. But Mastodon doesn't bring in general people easily so literally the only people I follow there are related to the FOSS ecosystem (and similar nerds)... A lot of the accounts I follow are just bots which mirror content from Twitter.

RPCS3 is similarly awkward to read and spell.

And ncmpcpp, which makes sense as it's about 2 or 3 different forks from the original so the name got increasingly out of hand.

11

And ncmpcpp, which makes sense as it’s about 2 or 3 different forks from the original so the name got increasingly out of hand.

Ah yes the ncm program. Used to give my brain half a stroke trying to remember the full name.

4

It doesn't exist. Well, PCSX4 doesn't, RPCS4 was a private project some years ago:

RPCS4 was a private project being worked on by one of the original developers of RPCS3, DH. Little is known about the project at the time, but we do know that it was expected to run on Unix-likes and can boot PS4 games without graphics

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/PlayStation_4_emulators footnote 2

PCSX4 was just malware/adware or similar if I recall correctly. It came into being long before PS4 emulation reached anything remotely resembling the concept of "playable".

4

I hear you. The one that always gets me is PPSSPP. Every time I type it I miss out a letter and have to go back and fix it.

6

Somehow, I perfectly remember ncmpcpp (what does any of that even mean? something with C++ I guess?) but struggle with lighttpd (light+httd+daemon).

5
piefed.ca

Yeah, its a fun one, but it does have a logical reason.

PSX was the codename for the PS1, and what the internet community latched on to, especially after the PS2 came out and there needed to be clarity on which they were referring to.

One of the early PSX PC emulators decided to name themselves PCSX as an amalgamation of PC and PSX.

PCSX2's team wanted to make a PS2 emulator on par with/inspired by (and maybe forked off of?) the PS1 emulator and decided to continue the naming convention.

And now we have the dislexia-unfriendly PCSX2 name.

19

ah dammit, that’s actually compelling reasoning! lmao

5
okmkoreply
lemmy.world

Y'all remember the PSX emu Bleem! ? You could buy it commercially as a physical disk from the shelves of a store? I have no idea how they got away with it but that seems unthinkable these days.

I feel like, based on the interface, they just took PCSX, swapped the splash screen, and somehow distributed it commercially, along with even running TV ads. They must've been sued into oblivion by Sony.

2
piefed.ca

Personally, I wasn't allowed to own a computer until well after Bleem! went out of business (from running out of money for legal defence against sony).

That being said, looking at wikipedia, Bleem! started first, so PCSX was the one that stole the look and feel of Bleem!

3

I didn't even know people read it. My eyes just glazed over the letters like it's a picture lol.

2
feddit.org

Then it should PCPSX or PSXPC, but the PCSX trips me up so hard. I hate it so much

2

Maybe, but it is meant as a portmanteau, and not just two abbreviations stuck together.

Like... if the National Aeronautics and Space Administration made a big light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation device, and decided to call it the NASER instead of NASALASER.

At the same time, I liked .NET's no-nonsense naming of namespaces. When I see something like System.Threading.Tasks, I can immediately recognise that it's a namespace that deals with task-based parallelism. Then you have tokio in Rust and I want to stab the person that came up with the name. Same for clap and serde. They mean nothing unless you already know what those packages do.

7
Echo Dotreply
feddit.uk

Yeah except that it's literally called .NET, pronounced dot net, they included a punctuation symbol in the name. Is it a programming language for the web, nope. So why's it called that?

2

The people making the programming language and related tooling seem to know what's up.

The people making other various products all seem to want to be a super special naming boy.

2

You're comparing system packages to user-provided packages.

User-provided packages need to have names that are easily searchable. If you named a package eg threading, searching for $PROGRAMMING_LANGUAGE threading would give you a ton of irrelevant results

sh.itjust.works

Common dictionary words are not trademarkable. In fact, if an existing trademark becomes common in speech it becomes genericized and the trademark is lost. One of my personal hobbies is doing that to Velcro.

That, and you've got to remember how big iPods were at the time. In 2007, it was weird that Apple was entering the cell phone market. The iSomething branding basically saved the company in 2001 with the iMac and iBook, the iPod was the first electronics gadget I ever remember being worn as a status symbol, the first that got treated like designer clothing or shoes. That "I have an iPod, and you have...whatever that is." White headphone cords were a fashion statement. The Motorola Razr phone got the same treatment before the iPhone.

Physical products - maybe, but it doesn't seem to apply to software. And Apple is not the only offender in that (although I have to admit that they're somewhat good at coming up with generic and yet recognisable names because of the context). Just try to think of a desktop or mobile OS that doesn't bundle a default app with a generic name like Files, Mail, Internet and so on.

1

They're not trying to trademark those. Others can call their default apps the same thing and it's fine. Others can't call their default in house browser chrome (unless they're google).

3

Don't forget iPods were this big back when the iPhone was released:

And as others pointed out they had the iMac and iBook and iTunes and the iMac was full of more iNames that I can't even think of right now. It fit their branding enough that SNL did a joke about iRan and iRack
