You are obviously not a big enough bell end. I'm a complete twat and I'm on it.

49

I mean, yes, but the joke I was making was that I must be a twat too based on the previous comment.

4
piefed.social

I'm not gay at all and I'm on the list. Thinking people should be accepted and loved no matter who they love seems to be very offending to that idiot who wrote the list.

Yeah, nah, you not beating the allegations here. Clearly you on the LGBT+ spectrum somewhere.

Scun-thorpe if anyone is wondering, Also Penistone a place in England Cockburn a name in the UK And Middlesex and Sussex I might get put on a list 🤣

13

I drove past Penistone the other day, I giggled and pointed out the sign to my bf

I do it every time we pass by...it never gets old

I just copy the message link and open it in a browser on their instance

Are you saying that you are? In which case, what substring got you blocked? Only thing I can see is maybe "gina" which feels too weak

1

In all my years this might be the most dumb block list I have ever seen. A sample:

If you make a username "billionaire [ cock | dick ]" it won't be caught by the billionaire cock/dick filter. I find that amusing.

Also didn't make the list.

5

Huh, just looked. I'm on it too. I rarely say anything, let alone political stuff

I thought I got pretty spicy when I was telling people they were being queerphobic but I guess not 😞

Your entire insurance is blocked if I’m not mistaken, so maybe you just didn’t get seen due to said block?

8

I think you meant instance. The concept of a transgender blahaj insurance claim being denied by a Lemmy mod is much funnier, though. Blahaj must defend themself in court against unjust insurance denial now. Bridget—from Guilty Gear—will be their lawyer while we're at it.

7

This is my 3,000 comment in a little under 3 years. Still not cool enough for the blocklist. ;_;

18

Don't even talk to me if you did not make the list. Talk to my regex on the list

Idk honestly, I'm new and saw the opportunity for a bad joke and couldn't pass that up since bad jokes are my entire personality. :D

What the hell is a tesseract list?

11
cRazi_manreply
europe.pub

I'll try to summarise from memory and my knowledge from a couple of posts, but details might be wrong since I've not done a deep dive into this. I'm not going to go looking for links and references, because who has the time?

There was a frontend for Lemmy called Tesseract (a frontend is a different interface for the Lemmy site. For example, I use Alexandtrie and think this is the best interface in browser if you want to see what a frontend looks like). Anyway, it came to light that the dev for Tesseract had covertly added a blacklist to the frontend. He then wrote a long rant about how there's propoganda and unpleasantness on Lemmy and he's trying to protect his users from this. In reality he basically described how he wants to block anyone who isn't agreeable with his opinion, expresses leftist opinions, supports LGBTQ+ rights, etc. So people have taken it as a badge of honour in being on the list and are making it a mockery of Tesseract. The dev has taken down the Github page for Tesseract (although I think someone forked it first and removed the blacklist). So now people are flooding Lemmy with memes about being on the list and hating on Tesseract. It's all fun and games, but as with all things with social media trends, it will likely start getting boring as you come across a lot of this on your feed.

I’m on the list and the only “propaganda” I’ve spread is a willingness to end fascist lives, which hardly seems controversial to me. I mean, typically you shoot fascists, don’t you?

5
lemmus.org

Depends what you define as fascist? Who's the judge here? In the pre-elon twitter times people would call everything nazi/fascist that didn't match their opinion. Basically you are threatening to murder people for... opinions? Coming from a place without death penalty this is indeed concerning. Especially when targeted at a certain person. TBH be happy you got banned and not jailed.

-6

A fascist is a fascist, such a weird argument to have. Why do you have trouble identifying fascists? Pretty suspicious honestly.

5

‘It’s normal to throw people in jail for being willing to kill a fascist before they’ve done anything’ is really wild. That actually happens where you are? Someone just says they’d kill a fascist and they get locked up?

4

Fascist according to Wikipedia, there that's the definition for you. There's not much room for misinterpretation.

0

as with all things with social media trends, it will likely start getting boring as you come across a lot of this on your feed.

Is there an application form I can fill somewhere?

7

Perchance you should start measuring things in hamburger units, or express your distaste of paywalled articles, or how you want to remove all of the mild everyday annoyances from the reality because, you know, they mildly bug you. Or just talk about the proletariat.

...I dunno, I'm not on the list either because I don't talk about this stuff much, I guess.

2

You had to say, "Nazis bad 🥺👉👈." Apparently that's the secret gang sign of the antifascist transgender mafia he was bravely trying to defend the world from.

I routinely tell people to get fucked but didn't make the list. They must have more stringent criteria than just being rude.

6

Those are rookie comment numbers!

On the bright side, surely .ML is banned so you catch an indirect inclusion.

5

Gotta bump those numbers up, I'm at 2.5k comments in 10 months. Just scattershot your political opinions into the void, you'll make the list.

Only downside to me switching home instances is that this account isn't on it. My old one was in the top 100 though.

It is called the toxicity list if you weren't toxic you don't go on it I guess. Honestly IDK what the big deal is the mods and admins here love their big ban lists why is this particular one getting so much attention?

-1
Noel_Skumreply
sh.itjust.works

Because it was secretly implemented on people who had no means of knowing that their entire fediverse feed was being personally curated by a single individual.

It’s fine to ring fence your own personal instance - that’s the point of federation; but to secretly censor a front end client? Ffs.

11
lemmy.world

It’s fine to ring fence your own personal instance

Yea that isn't how big ban lists work.

secretly implemented on people who had no means of knowing

Yea that is how shadow banning works.

being personally curated by a single individual.

Mhmmm

Just seems like someone went a slight bit further than everyone else and somehow this is the worst possible thing ever it just doesn't make sense.

-1
Avicennareply
programming.dev

It is not the worst possible thing but shadow banning via a client is quite ridiculous, even more so when politically motivated. I won't even get into how funny it is to have even less of a tolerance for political variety than lemmy.ml.

If you really want to circle jerk, that is what instances are for where what is tolerated and what is not is much more transparent.

3
lemmy.world

It wasn't politically motivated tho it was 'toxic people' that were shadow banned you know "be awesome or else" right? That is how vibe modding works it's fundamental to the fediverse experience.

This was a small step forward if you only have a problem with this but not all the steps that lead us here then you are pushing an agenda using the perceived political motivations, or you are just dumb.

0
Avicennareply
programming.dev

toxic=people who don't agree with me isn't a very mature approach though is it? In my opinion what is fundamental to the fediverse is being able to discuss with people you don't completely agree with. It is the more centralized social media platforms that repeatedly push content you like so that you get addicted to your echo chambers. If you don't like your ideas being challenged I would suggest such places.

1
lemmy.world

I am not advocating for ban lists. It's that I understand how the fediverse works it's rife with censorship this is just oh_no_my_tribe these people don't care about censorship when it is against their enemies.

1

I am not advocating for ban lists

It wasn't politically motivated tho it was 'toxic people'

I don't know, you seem rather supportive for someone who doesn't advocate it.

In any case there is a world of difference between ban lists of instances and ban lists of an app. The latter is something one step shy of a centralized ban list for fediverse. Also ban lists in instances at least try to revolve around a set of rules (whether or not they succeed is another issue and will change from instance to instance), where as this one is just single person's "don't like this person because he didn't agree with me" list imposed without any information or whatsoever on end users. It also doesn't help with the optics that it looks hand curated...

2
lemmy.world

I love drama because it inevitably brings out people who want to be middle of the road about everything, and you can look back and see how that works in practice for every other opinion.

It's telling on yourself in a fantastic sort of way.

0
lemmy.world

Yes I don't see the world as black and white instead as grey I am not going to sidestep my morals for a political agenda. Thanks for the compliment.

It's a real shame you thought this was an insult it's very... telling.

2

You thought I was insulting you, no I'm just pointing out what it looks like to be held up by a cylinder of jello that represents what in other people is a backbone!

How insulting!

Honestly if someone is literally asking to get put on a list of toxic users I see no reason they shouldn't be accomodated, it will be doing a favor to those of us who appreciate having the feature.

The situation would be the same if he also could block you for other users and instances without telling them.

Personally blocking a user on your account is fine Personally blocking a user from your admin is fine

Both those things use Lemmy tools and the modlog. Banning people with a secret shadowban malware list and distributing this malware to other instances is unethical.

I'm fairly certain this user is Admiral Patrick's alt. He is in every thread not only defending but straight up lying.

I highly urge everyone to go take a look at the list. There's lgbt communities and instances, small news orgs and even a word ban so your comment doesn't show if it has "Epstein class" in it for example.

The app only showed you half the ban list, it hid the LGBTQ bans, users and comment stuff from what I understand.

13
startrek.website

I don't consider an optional ui used by optional instances with an optional and clearly labeled feature that enables an optional GUI toggle that allows users to control a filter that does not actually ban anyone to be "malware"

-18

clearly labeled

Clear as mud. You knew adding the entire Blahaj instance on a “toxicity” filter would cause an uproar, that’s why you went out of your way to hide it.

13

Flattening criticism of your dishonesty to “block lists are evil” is an oversimplification and you definitely know it.

12

if you are capable, reflecting on this moment where you visibly outed yourself on this alt may be wise. you put your worst foot forward by being a sarcastic prick.

list of toxic users

Bro like every major account on this site is on that list, and most of them are chill and not toxic at all, just leftists.

Why would you trust the word of a developer that hid this list in a file that is downloaded after install, rather than the official blocklist in the git repo? Are you really that gullible?

15

Why don't you ask the developer enforcing a secret blacklist? What a stupid fucking comment, holy shit.

Seems like there wouldn't be this big hubbub if the dev hadn't been a sneaky asshat who decided to control the views of anyone using their front-end without notification they were going to change.

  • The full list with detailed explanations is available publicly in the GitHub repo.

  • The "toxic mode" toggle is visible in the tesseract GUI along with another explanation of what it does

  • Tesseract is not a default Lemmy UI, an instance admin has to manually add it in order for it to be accessible.

  • Tesseract's toxic mode filter does not ban anyone

  • Instance admins are not forced to use Tesseract

  • Users are not forced to use an instance that provides Tesseract as an option

  • Users are not forced to enable the toxic mode filter on instances that have the toggle enabled

  • We are all free to block whomever we please on our own accounts

  • Admins are free to ban whomever they please from their instances that they own

  • We do not get to decide who gets banned from other peoples instances

  • We do not get to decide what other people read

  • Other people do not owe you or I an explanation of why they do the things they do in their free time
