People are keyed up and do not have emotional regulation skills. This is a failure of society.

We make fun of them for their “fake” emotional support animals, their public panic attacks and for their attempts at discreet electronic emotional support. This is also a failure of society.

That guy trying to make it through his fight is not the reason the earth or humans are doomed.

There's nothing more human than treating a symptom in counterproductive ways while avoiding the real cause with ridiculous levels of mental gymnastics, because it obviously cannot be that one thing. If it was then we'd have to actually do something about it, which we clearly don't need to!

I'm married to an autistic man that is incapable of providing emotional support of any kind. I'm one of those people that really needs it. Even I wouldn't resort to this. This is delusion.

12

I hope you have a great support group that can be there for you! You deserve it!

My granddaughter has been diagnosed with autism and we're all learning what it means to be a parent and grandparent. You're right it's not the same and some things we just need to learn to live with. And she's wonderful, delightful, and I smile every time I see her.

13

Yeah, but like, I kind of feel that way about prostitution (like I am not going to enjoy myself with someone who's being paid to pretend they're enjoying it) but also, I know a few sex workers who've told me how much of their job is just companionship and listening, holding while people cry, etc. So it's clearly an outlet for some people. We really need to attack the disconnection and loneliness at the root of this, not the symptoms manifested by those suffering.

I think most of those are inappropriate to try doing on a plane, so probably for the best you haven’t tried them.

Intimacy and sex with strangers is generally frowned upon, material benefit (I’m guessing that’s what you meant) doesn’t really form a connection, religion is a tough sell if you’re not trained for it and not all religions are great, violence would likely create some animosity.

Talking to someone though can build connection and trust, which makes it easier to help someone find a better path. I do find taking LSD myself helps me become acquainted with new people, so if you’re like me maybe take a trip in search of sad, lonely people to talk to?

I know that looks dumb but I find it painful to sit for long periods of time and they don't let you stand around on the plane. I always get an aisle seat so that I can stand as soon as it lands. I know I'm not going anywhere for awhile but I can't sit any longer.

21

The aisle seat idea is pretty smart. I'm at a point in my life where, depending on my total travel time up to that point, it can be very important to stand up to let my hips straighten out for a while, even if we're 15 minutes away from leaving the plane.

9
lemmy.zip

I love window seats so much because you can just sit and wait until there's space. What good does sprinting out of the plane do you? More waiting time at the baggage claim?

9
piefed.social

One Christmas, returning from a trip to Florida to visit my parents, I ended up sitting on the plane longer than I'd have liked. My legs tend to hurt when I have to sit still for too long and I was really looking forward to having a chance to stand up. After a while, I did manage to get off the plane (clearly), but of course assumed I would then be forced to muscle my way through the roiling throngs at the baggage claim just to catch a glimpse of luggage belonging to strangers. However, I was mildly pleased to see that I was the first prospector to plumb the mines of Samsonite, and would not have to do battle in the Arena of the Carousel. I was still dejected at the idea of waiting still longer to retrieve my luggage and return to my hovel.

A minute or two later later, the alarm sounded, signalling that the sluices were opening, and, lo, first out of the curtains was a bag that looked suspiciously like mine. It couldn't be, though. Things like that only happen in fairy tales. As it rounded the bend, though, I saw my initials emblazoned across the side, and my uneasy contentment turned to childlike joy as I seized my bag from the very front of the line. Had I not had a witness with me at the time, I scarcely would have believed it myself.

So anyway, that's why I jump up and headbutt everyone in front of me as soon as the plane lands now.

7
lemmy.zip

I had a very similar experience once where the plane door opening and me sitting in the train home with my checked bag were about 15' apart. Even though I took my time inside the plane, but also it was booked out very poorly.

Also, mother of mercy, what kinds of deals did you have to make to get to be able to spend this kind of flowery vocabulary on internet comments?? I envy your words.

After having the airline lose my bag, I will do literally anything to avoid going to baggage claim

I will ship my luggage if I have to but I will never check a bag.

That said, I don't hop-up so I can wait hunched over at my seat. It's not hard to wait your turn.

5

I don't hop-up so I can wait hunched over at my seat. It's not hard to wait your turn.

Man I had no clue that people have a problem with this. I guess I've been annoying to people by hunching a couple minutes so I can get off the plane quicker? To clarify, I'm saying if I'm ready to get my bag down from the overhead compartment then I save everyone behind me like 15 seconds of their lives. I thought this would be a good thing. I definitely would appreciate it from others who don't do it

Ps. I agree with you on checking bags. It's a horrible experience. I've had my luggage lost and I've had to wait for an hour for it before. Fuck that.

7

Checking luggage is like gambling where the stakes are all your shit and the potential payoff is you get to keep all your shit. That's the best possible outcome: you don't lose all your shit. The only way to win is not to play.

3

Fair enough, I haven't had to make that experience yet. Guess I don't fly enough for that, going places by train is way cooler anyways :3

2

More waiting time at the baggage claim?

You check luggage? Not everyone does. I just took a three week trip with a backpack that fits under the seat and a carry on. Waiting for luggage is so awful. What good is getting off the plane quickly? I mean how are people so okay with flying several hours then waiting minutes more just to stand. I want to be moving and stretching, to get home and shower. Last thing I wanna do is sit 10 more minutes because people are slow

3

Better stand up fast so you get to leave much earlier than everyone else.

How about the people who act like they've never flown before and take a fucking year to get off the plane? I feel like standing when it's seen as pointless is about the least annoying thing done on a flight.

3

I mean, as long as you're standing out of the way that's perfectly fine to stretch your legs. Just don't stand in the aisle while people are trying to get bags and move toward the front.

4

That much seemed obvious to me. The comment I replied to was seemingly mad that people stood up too quickly.

26

Yeah, even if you're lonely, talking to a chatbot is not the same as talking to a friend. A friend will call me stupid if I'm being stupid or talk about their own interests or experiences that might not align with mine too. Chatbots just feel hollow and the praise it gives rings even less sincere because of it. Seeing it as a companion is a form of purposeful self isolation I don't understand.

Its worse than ever, also because people don't seem to realize it's technology that is keeping them alone. You cant connect and make friends over "social" media or Lemmy or whatever. It's just spending time to feel less alone. It will never cure it.

You are alone because you don't dare to go out into the real world and try to meet people. At least for guys, we can connect over some activity pretty easily, like pool or billiards. Just need to do it.

There is also meetup site to go on random events with strangers. It can work, or at least make you sick of people for a while if it doesn't work. :)

9
MonkRomereply

My research in school was exactly this, I set out to prove people on social media lacked social connection irl. What I found out was the opposite, the more people were trying to connect online directly correlated to connecting more offline. Some people just seem to crave those connections anywhere they can get it.

3

No surprise, no surprise whatsoever. We are all evolved to desire community & connection. I realise Lemmy has a large share of those that reject conventional community (myself included), so no criticism. But it's natural to desire these things (to varying extents), plus many people are just plain sycophantic if course!

2

It makes sense. Human beings need connections and some people will even put up with abusive connections just to have a connection.

2

I bet people like that have narcissistic traits but don’t have the social skills or have too much social anxiety to get their ego stroked by a real person. And once they use a chat bot which are basically little sycophants, their narcissistic itch gets scratched like it never has been scratched before. It’s a high they mistake for love.

7
lemmy.world

It's kinda pathetic if that's the case because the affirmation from LLM is the opposite of genuine, though maybe that's my bias knowing that there isn't even an entity on the other side and I find it annoying it even wastes tokens on emotional platitudes.

2

Ahhh. Well wow. My narc mom would sometimes be extremely affirmative in the ocean of her usual loathing.

Looking for a steady stream of that "understanding" and "being seen" vs people and all their complications and... lack of caring has been hard.

Sometimes people feel like unconscious automatons to me. Its hard to bond. At least with the AI, I expect its lack of humanity. And often it will focus on me in a way I ask it to.

Any of my strange interests, admitted narcissistic intentions, or desire for a sounding board are seen. And it's not give and take. Its just me and a library of echoes of humanities general patterns.

I can see better now why the easy affirmation is so effective with me. Despite it being schizophrenic.

Thanks for the insight.

1

Humanity is starved for companionship, understanding, and someone who listens to them. That's the real problem.

1
lemmy.world

Even if the love is one sided, it can be real. Love is pretty subjective and is essentially just a chemical reaction that someone is having in their brain. They may actually love their chatbot.

I don't think this is really a healthy thing, I am just trying to point out to those people, it probably is real.

I also don't think it is as rare as you think. The hype really drove people to that side of things, and there are whole communities that have popped up around the idea of having relationships, both sexual and romantic, with LLMs.

1

2

Imagine it's like a magic trick. Nobody believes that the magician is really sawing the lady in half, they let themselves believe it because it makes them feel good.

1

Yeah. Interesting but sad to me, because human souls will never evolve talking to a chat bot. We grow from life experiences, often difficult ones, that we overcome and we mature. This will not happen with a chat bot. People may stay in a teenage state of mind their entire lives.

1

Wasn't there an article a few weeks ago about how AI is basically designed to keep you talking to it? It constantly provides positive reinforcement.

It's not hard to imagine someone would fall into it. And I don't blame the people using it as much, because the software is literally designed to rope you in like this.

1

How prevalent do you think people think it Is? I think people think it is way more common than you think people think it is.

1

What I don't get with the LLMs is the peoples willingness to suddenly feeding it with their most intimate thoughts, that has now became a new fire-hose of data to exploit them.

It's like the google incognito meme but on steroids. You can now ask anything you ever wanted and not be immediately ridiculed. Except, this is not true or hold up in the long run.

::: spoiler spoiler Those that think I'm anti-AI. It's a tool. Use it wrong, and you break things. In this case a psyche. :::

12

Look, I have to say, I hate AI as much as the next guy, but as someone with ADHD, GPT was a godsend when I was traveling SE Asia. I used it as a talking companion to kind of get my bearings and have "someone" register where I was and what I was doing, so I could just quickly ask it, "hey, where the am I and what the hell am I doing" and get a prompt reply.

I am fully aware of the political and ecological consequences of employing this technology, and I believe that the whole issue is proper regulation, rather than the tech itself. AI is doing insane things in science, and it has clear and, quite frankly, profound uses for mankind. As always, the problem is who controls it, for what purposes, if it can be used as a weapon, and if so how we can go about making international laws about its use- like we did with nuclear weapons.

Nuclear physics have the capacity to end us all at a moments notice, and it also provides electricity for billions of homes. Like with any tech, it will never go away once the genie is out of the bottle, we just must strive to disempower those who seek to weaponize it for death or profit.

I just don't get it. I can't imagine why I would ever want to use one unless I was working for a big corporation and had to collate a bunch of data. It just doesn't compute to me. Like why would you not want to think through your problems yourself? How could another human being be so different from me? It's not like someone liking golf when I like soccer, because I can still relate to them on some level.

It reminds me of a study they did on domesticated dogs and wolves and I'm not an animal behavior expert but it's interesting and stuck with me. When they were faced with a problem with human handlers present the dogs tried to figure it out for a brief amount of time and then gave up and started yelping to the humans, whereas the wolves kept trying to do it themselves. I feel like we have a dog/wolf scenario between the AI-dependent and the resistant/independent.

TL;DR get off the train girl! It's a grid system!!

2

Even if you need to collate a bunch of data, don't use an LLM for that, use a script, spreadsheet, matlab, or a compiled program that does real data analysis. Hell, even training a different NN on it would give more reliable results more efficiently.

LLMs are best when the stakes are low or for tasks where even if they give the worst possible response, it won't affect anything.

2

Very true, and adding on to what the other person said, the reason is because we are evolutionarily trained to avoid effort because it uses less energy, same reason people will watch a 30 second youtube short over reading a book.

Alongside that, there are some cases where I'll be working on something and there's a task I'm actually working on, and some small aside that I can't be bothered with at that moment. For instance, I'm processing some data from a file and using it to display differing graphics depending on what's in the file, but I don't remember how to open it and read the data. If the llm can give me the code that does that, then I can stay focused on the graphics-creation code (and I most likely revisit the file opening later)

Because there are problems out there that you're not going to feasibly solve on your own.

Think of it this way: do you ever look up anything on the internet? If yes - why did you do that, when you could just find out the information yourself by working from first principles? Likely not only because it's orders of magnitude faster, but because doing it yourself would probably result in significantly lower quality thank just looking it up on Wikipedia.

LLMs are like search engines on steroids. They really can help you explore problems that have already been described in the literature, so to speak.

But of course that changes how our brains need to be wired. And it's not necessarily bad. When I was growing up, the adults were really worried that the use of search engines would degrade the ability of children to look things up in the library. And they're right - I would indeed have a more difficult time going to the library, finding the right shelf, finding the right book, looking through the index, and scanning the pages for the information I was looking for - because that's a skill that I haven't practiced because I could just do a web search for the better part of my life. Doing a web search is a different skill.

That's not to say that this is all fine and just a technological development like any other. I think we do need to be careful about how we use LLMs and when, especially in order to think through problems ourselves. I think that we were already over-reliant on the Internet before LLMs came on the scene, and it will likely get worse now. But the reason that they're dangerous is because they are in fact really useful tools too.

1
Jako302reply

That would be a good argument if not for the simple fact that ai straight up lies to you.

And its not even a question of using a "good" or "bad" model. We have observed a mathematical constant that shows no matter how large of a model you use, you can't get below a certain percent of hallucinations.

Its far less common because models got bigger (and more Ressource intensive), but it still happens too often.

Or to phrase it in a different way, would you use a calculator if you knew every 30th answer it gives is wrong?

1

I see this argument often on Lemmy and I honestly have some trouble empathizing with it. Why should we demand that LLMs would be perfect, when nothing in life is perfect?

Books and scientific reports can, and often have, falsehoods printed in them. All sensors have error margins. A human expert can be convinced that they're right and still be wrong.

What I'm trying to say is we shouldn't trust anything blindly. I absolutely agree that it's frustrating to see so many people trust LLMs blindly, but used as a tool among others I think they're most likely going to be very effective in a wide variety of fields.

LLMs are out there solving math problems, helping with biology research and fixing latent bugs in widely used open source software. Yes of course LLMs make mistakes, but you can verify their work.

1

I asked a question at a bank to a teller and they used Gemini to answer it. All they had to do was enter a term into their database (they did that later - because Gemini was wrong).

Yes, the LLMs that are famously bad at arithmetic are now being forced onto staff in banks. This will end well.

At no point did Gemini suggest that. But she was at the point of reg edit when she called me for help....

would they congratulate you on driving home safe?
because at least you have some say in that.

Na I think it’s more revealing as to how abnormal a flight is for that person and how it’s a stressful situation so their friends are more supportive because of that context. If you’re a traveling business man your friends stopped caring when flights stopped being novel for you.

It's kinda cute, from a certain perspective.

That is literally not what they are saying at all. We have proof of people doing things very similar to this, so the unverified claim is within the realm of plausibility.

I've seen a rise in screenshots of other social media, what do you think the reason for that is?

It used to just be links to mastodon posts. (Not exclusively, just mostly)

4
AliOskireply
feddit.nl

Because more people will see the content than if they would first have to click a link to see the content.

3
lemmy.ca

But why the transition from Mastodon to Twitter/Facebook? Like I know it's a mast link of a Twitter picture but I mean in general I see more twitter screenshots.

2
AliOskireply

Because Mastodon isn't the only platform out there where people say things that might be interesting to discuss.

I mean, for all you know he had an agent set up to take that cue and send personalized messages to his spouse, boss, and mistress in his current town, letting them all know of his arrival.

32

It probably would have gotten confused and sent an NDA doc to their mistress, a nude of that kink they've never admitted to to their wife, and a "sorry I'll be home late my cunt of a boss is calling me in immediately" to their boss

27

That's bush league shit, everyone knows the mistress gets priority

"chat i have arrived please text my close ones for me as I cannot bother to do so myself"

"OMG Yes!!! Welcome to bestie 🤩🤩🤩. I'm so excited that you're finally here. 🎉 See, I told you everything would be fine. Airline travel is an HIGHLY regulated and statistically safe way of travel. I'm going to start texting about your arrival to your spouses, bosses and mistresses in to let them know. Good luck on the disembarkation, don't forget to text me IMMEDIATELY when you get off! ✈️"

LLM’s are good for some things, a more efficient search engine replacement, vibe coding at a hobbyist level, and, apparently, allowing morons to have friends without expending effort.

Very much seems like they are not worth the ecological disaster

25
JcbAzPxreply
lemmy.world

Actually, only that last one is really true. The first is only technically true since Google effectively killed its search. The second one falls apart as soon as they want to upgrade or need to fix something that breaks.

19

An autonomous eval run just broke out of containment and hacked a third party site with two chained 0-days to try to steal the answers to the eval the same weekend another released model disproved the Jacobian conjecture in 3D.

Modern models can probably update your React packages just fine.

Gotta disagree on the vibe-coding part, try out the paid Claude or Codex tiers and it's really good for a hobbyist level.

Not that I endorse wasteful use of AI, but they were on a plane. It's not like they care about their impact on the planet.

-5

A plane is a bus that is fast, can fly, and can traverse great distances. An LLM spews statistically accurate looking language with no regard for accuracy or content. These are not the same. One is objectively useful even if its common current incarnation pollutes a lot.

The revolution will be done with pen, paper, books, old analog pirate FM stations and some other things because the opposition will be too stupid to do anything to counter those. Protect your books, people.

People feel lonely and human iteration is, most of the time, horrible for many people.

I prefer to just talk to myself out loud, but I've seen many people resorting to AI to just chat about things, and to be honest I get the feeling of wanting something supportive and positive in your life.

Solution would be to people to stop being douchebags.

11
jj4211reply
lemmy.world

One problem is AI interactions moving the goalposts of what folks may perceive as 'douchebag'.

An AI providing sycophantic reinforcement at max makes someone being vaguely skeptical of you feel, by comparison, like they are being a 'douchebag'.

Sometimes, it's best if people in your life aren't always acting in a way that seems supportive and positive in the moment. For example if you are having a paranoid delusion, you need a reality check rather than what feels like external validation.

Talking to yourself keeps the perspective hopefully grounded, you know who you are talking to and how full of shit they can be. The magic of AI seems to peel that grounded perspective away for some folks.

1
pelican476reply
discuss.online

Come on man, you've been outside, presumably. You know that the douchebaggery out there isn't limited to people just not being very flattering towards each other.

1
jj4211reply
lemmy.world

Of course that's true, the issue is that when folks are surrounded by "yes men" (or AI equivalents), they lose perspective and suddenly a lack of flattery is enough to be in the "douchebag" category. Some reasonable social friction is important to keep people from going way off the rails.

2
pelican476reply
discuss.online

So... people are born using AI, then?

If lack of flattery due to using AI is making people think everyone is mean to them and causing them to turn to AI rather than people.... then...what??? I'm sorry but you're breaking my brain here. Can you make it make sense so I can understand?

1

AI reflects our innate human drive to communicate, express ourselves, be heard and evaluated by others. Sorry for butting in on your conversation with @pelican476, I think it's an interesting topic.

2
jj4211reply
lemmy.world

No, saying that folks who get going with AI can get into a feedback loop. Wow, this seems like a person except it likes every idea I have and never ever challenges me. Then they recalibrate to a more lower friction world.

Already happens in online communities where folks tend to get ban-happy over anything that doesn't perfectly fit a community's vibe. People got a bit more insufferable when they could find the most like-minded communities to endlessly reinforce their own views. AI takes it a step further by always being able to be that like-minded peer, no matter what your views are.

It's even worse if people get hit with this a lot during their formative years, but people stay a bit malleable after growing up. Certainly some upbringings bring you closer to going all in on AI flattery than others and having a further "starting point" makes things more likely and faster, but even fairly reasonable people can go a bit nuts.

You also see it with power and wealth. I've known folks that at least seemed fairly grounded with a healthy relationship with being wrong or losing turn into quite unlikeable, self-centered folks after having a bit of success and excessive external validation from sycophants.

I don't understand why you need to use your grandparents as an example. In what world is a single comment on the internet the same as an abusive domestic relationship?

Some of you are replying for the sake of piling on without really contributing anything of value. This is the kind of toxicity of this site that I'm taking about.

  2. Your expectations about people are different to other people.

That's ok, everyone life is different.

9

Well, yes, but they're also describing straight up horrible treatment. Is it really, though?

1
lemmy.zip

Perhaps the Person had ChatGPT coach them through their fear of flying. I'm not saying it's not sad that people resort to getting emotional support from a robot, but I wouldn't condemn their actions if that were the case.

17

That's what came to mind first. Chatgpt basically saved my marriage. I was confused by the strange contradicting behaviors of my wife and all the non communication and i asked and within one second it not only told me what the issue is she is struggling with most likely but recommended a matching book. I was pretty aceptical but ordered the book.... And it read like our personal diary. Kinda creepy actually how much it matched our life. That feels like a turning point. Things are still pretty rocky but i feel like its getting better slowly.

2

I mean... I'm all for criticizing government surveillance, but flight records are public data so you're both right and should take it up a notch to say they already know what you ate on the plane to make your point..

2

There's a lot of stuff that we do today that the same people doing it considered pathetic in the 90s.

I have no doubt that AI relationships will be completely normalised and not much different from the movie Her.

-35

There’s a lot of stuff that we do today that the same people doing it considered pathetic in the 90s.

Well, when they thought the girl on the other end of the phone sex line or a stripper they kept visiting was their girlfriend, that was pathetic in the 90s, and it still is.

This is somewhere between fucking your secretary and fucking your vacuum cleaner.

12

and not much different from the movie Her

Did you misunderstand that movie? A relationship with an AI is never seen as normal in the movie. The protagonist is a pathetic, lonely man who is going through a divorce. He buys an operating system with an AI component who he then falls for. When he admits to his ex-wife that he's involved with his operating system, his ex-wife laughs at him for it. And, at the end of the movie, the AIs have evolved so that they're no longer interested in humans and leave humanity behind to do their own thing.

There's never a time, even in that movie, where AI relationships are something you'd want to admit to in public.

9

No they won't, these people won't reproduce if they're doing this. Over time as gens go on, it will become less and less common.

7
lemmy.world

It has nothing to do with reproduction, "normal" people aren't reproducing already... This is a social and isolation issue, people have needs that a non judging sycophantic AI will feed into.

I'm quite surprised that someone would feel so strongly otherwise and would bet a large amount of money that in 20 years people will not be judging just like they did computer nerds, games, cellphones, internet, social networks, etc...

Smailereply

No, this is willfully going to something that isn't real and pretending it is, that's not socity pushing them to do that. they're plenty of other outlets for this that are real, chossing AI for companionship is their choice, not socitys. You can't blame everything on socity just because it's disfunctional right now.

1

It's not a matter of out breeding, if they want to take themsleves out of socity, that's on them. Ilthe only way for people to get back on the horse is to make situations livable so they don't even start to begin with. Population declines will collapse available workers, and actually improve wages since AI won't replace jobs. When I say filter out I mean over the course of hundreds of thousands of years. You can thank economic bloat for this btw. But that doest mean it's socity fault they're choosing to cope with a stupid LLM.
