Zaru Soba

This is Zaru Soba (Cold Soba noodles) with Tsuyu (sweet-savory dipping sauce). Got to be one of the best new dishes I've tried recently, very nice, subtle flavors, great for a hot day.

They're probably also deeper, which both provides a less ideal environment for algae to grow and also looks bluer despite algae that might be growing. The water in the tidal basin is also moving and has water naturally flowing in and out. The reflecting pool does not have that and needs to be shallow so that water movement is minimized to create the reflection it's supposed to give.

Pad kaprao

This is a meat-free version with soy and smoked tofu to replace the meat, and otherwise a pretty standard recipe. It's 35°C here, but I wanted something spicy.

all-metal slingshot

I was curious so I looked up what these laws actually say. Here are the relevant bits:

§ 2. Definitions

For the purposes of this Act, the following terms shall have the meanings set forth below:

  1. Weapon: any device or apparatus designed for: use in combat or hunting, or designed to resemble such objects.
  2. Firearm: a weapon or other device capable of firing, or otherwise propelling, a projectile, gas, signal flare, radiation, rocket, fire, or the like, as well as weapons capable of firing ammunition without a projectile

And then:

§ 8. Weapons Other Than Firearms

Except in the cases specified in § 10, it is prohibited to acquire, possess, import, manufacture, or trade certain weapons that are not classified as firearms, that have a high potential for causing harm, or for which there is no lawful use.

§8 specifically talks about "weapons", and I think it's a fair assumption that a rock would not fit the definition of a weapon in §2 due to not being "designed" for combat or hunting. You could even argue that a slingshot fits the definition of a firearm, so §8 doesn't even apply (so it would be outlawed even if §8 didn't specifically refer to weapons).

We're so back

IMO, this is one of the consequences of not having universal health insurance that isn't talked about enough. If the bar for going to the doctor is "about to lose a limb from infection", then people become vulnerable to pseudo-scientific garbage, simply because they hardly ever receive advice from actual medical professionals.
