[meta][discussion] Rules for this Community

As we have seen a rise of toxic behavior we have decided that it would be time for some rules. We would love other ideas too and feel free to discuss it here.

Also we are thinking about, to put in an Automoderation tool that could help us a lot. Because its currently not easy for us to scan every new comments and reports are rare currently. We want your opinons on that too, because its important to us that this community is based on the people here.

The shortlist that we have currently as idea for the Rules:

  • Be Kind to each other
  • No Hate speech
  • Dont harass people
  • No Racism, sexism and any other discrimination
  • Dont attack other people just because they have differnt opinions (Stay on Topic)
  • Do not double post

[meta] Guidlines for Posting

In the absence of a flair system on lemmy yet, let's try to make it easier to scan through posts by type in here by using tags:

  • [meta] for discussions/suggestions about this community itself
  • [article] for news articles
  • [blog] for any blog-style content
  • [video] for video resources
  • [academic] for academic studies and sources
  • [discussion] for text post questions, rants, and/or discussions
  • [meme] for memes
  • [image] for any non-meme images
  • [misc] for anything that doesn't fall cleanly into any of the other categories

I have copied that idea from another community. I forgot which one so sorry!

Feel free to discuss that here, I would like that change because it makes it a lot easier

75% More Pedestrians Have Been Killed Since 2009. Giant Trucks and SUVs Are Why

Key Takeaways

  • Bigger cars, bigger danger. Pedestrian fatalities have surged 75% since 2009, linked to the rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickups.
  • Size matters in safety. Larger vehicle dimensions contribute to increased pedestrian deaths, with 200-400 lives potentially saved annually if cars hadn’t grown.
  • Regulations and repercussions. Changes in emissions and fuel economy rules inadvertently encouraged bigger cars, impacting pedestrian safety.
  • Physics of impact. Larger vehicles distribute force differently, but their height and mass increase the risk of deadly collisions.

Bottom line: The rise of larger vehicles has significantly increased pedestrian fatalities, highlighting the unintended consequences of regulatory changes and vehicle design trends.

Deaths linked to London air pollution have fallen 40%, study estimates

While the independent Imperial report itself does not single out the Ulez or any other policy, Khan said: “The evidence is now overwhelming and unarguable: the bold action we have taken in London has reduced pollution, improved public health and saved lives.

“This latest data shows why expanding Ulez London-wide was even more important than we previously thought and is transforming lives right across our capital.”

The Ulez was launched in 2019 in central London and widened across inner boroughs in 2021.

Vehicles that fail to comply with emission standards – typically those with diesel engines from before 2015 or petrol from before 2004 – have to pay a daily charge, starting from £12.50 for cars. The overwhelming majority of vehicles driving in the zone, about 97%, are now compliant.

Last night, New York City candidates who embraced the livable streets movement defeated those who did not 🎉🥳

GREAT NEWS!!!

In Queens

🍍 Assembly Member Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC, defeated incumbent Senator Jessica Ramos, who was very much not.

🍍 Pesach Osina, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC for his support for the QueensLink and for better bus service, won the primary for the open Assembly seat in Howard Beach and the Rockaways.

🍍 Patrick Martinez, whom StreetsPAC chose partly because he’s never owned a car (!), won the primary to succeed state Senator Steven Raga in Elmhurst

🍍 Brian Romero, another StreetsPAC endorsee, won the race to succeed Gonzalez-Rojas in the Assembly.

🍍 Assembly Member Diana Moreno, who was endorsed by StreetsPAC for “leading on issues of traffic safety” as well as being a cyclist, won re-election.

🍍 Samantha Kattan, a tenant organizer, Democratic Socialist and StreetsPAC endorsee, won the primary for the open 37th Assembly seat covering Ridgewood, Sunnyside and Maspeth.

🍍 David Orkin, endorsed by StreetsPAC over incumbent Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, a frequent livable streets and e-bike foe, resoundingly won the primary for the Woodhaven seat.

🍍 Incumbent Assembly Member Catalina Cruz, also endorsed by StreetsPAC, won the primary to retain her Corona seat.

In Brooklyn:

🍓 Assembly Member Brian Cunningham, endorsed by StreetsPAC for his work on camera-based enforcement, won the primary to retain his seat in Crown Heights.

🍓 Assembly Member Emily Gallagher, one of StreetsPAC’s strongest endorsees, easily won her primary in Greenpoint.

🍓 Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon, also endorsed by StreetsPAC, won in Carroll Gardens.

🍓 Senator Jabari Brisport, whom StreetsPAC called “a reliable supporter of safer streets and better public transit,” easily won the primary to retain his Bedford-Stuyvesant seat.

🍓 Christian Tate, endorsed by StreetsPAC, defeated longtime incumbent Assembly Member Erik Dilan, who has been virtually nonexistent on livable streets issues in the Bushwick and East New York district. Tate led the effort to get that local community board to oppose the NYPD’s criminal crackdown on cyclists

🍓 Eon Huntley, a StreetsPAC endorsee, defeated incumbent Assembly Member Stefani Zinerman in Bedford-Stuyvesant’s 56th district. Huntley supports universal daylighting and wants the state Department of Motor Vehicles to be more proactive in addressing unsafe driving.

In Manhattan:

🍇 Illapa Sairitupac, StreetsPAC endorsee, won the primary for the open Assembly seat in Chinatown

🍇 Eli Northrup, who ran with StreetsPAC’s nod to succeed Lasher for a West Side Assembly seat, won the primary. StreetsPAC had praised his opposition to licensing and registering legal e-bikes and his advocacy for better street design.

It’s just become impossible to de-Google from Volkswagen, say GrapheneOS users

Carmaker Volkswagen is facing criticism from privacy-conscious drivers after GrapheneOS users reported being locked out of the company’s mobile app, leaving some unable to log in, sync vehicle data, or remotely control their cars.

Reports began surfacing on the GrapheneOS forum and Reddit’s r/degoogle community, where users described suddenly losing access to Volkswagen’s app despite using fully updated devices.

The issue appears to affect Volkswagen’s app ecosystem rather than a specific vehicle model, so owners that rely on VW Connect, We Connect, We Connect ID or related services could potentially be affected.

Some posters pointed to the apparent contradiction that Volkswagen’s software continues to support older, end-of-life Android versions while rejecting GrapheneOS installations.

One affected user, Aaron94, said Volkswagen’s app stopped working entirely after a logout.

Despite enabling compatibility settings and trying multiple workarounds, they were unable to log back in.

Another user, XavDub, reported similar problems. “First symptom, sync did not work anymore from the app, so I tried to logout to login again, but it’s since just impossible,” they wrote, adding that testing on a standard Google Pixel running stock Android worked normally.

When XavDub contacted the German car maker, the company responded that GrapheneOS “is not an official Volkswagen offering” and advised them to contact their OS provider instead.

The timing has raised eyebrows because Volkswagen recently changed the APIs used to access vehicle data.

According to German tech title Heise, the change disrupted third-party tools used by owners for smart charging, solar energy integration, and home automation.

...

It’s shaping up to be a cruel summer for GrapheneOS users. Earlier this month reports emerged that age-verification provider Yoti, used by Sony, Facebook and TikTok, had allegedly flagged GrapheneOS users during verification processes, prompting widespread backlash in privacy communities.

America vs Europe: Two Ways to Build a City

Architect and urban & computational designer Abhinav Bhardwaj made this great set of slides comparing urban design in the US and Europe, peppered with pithy observations like:

  • European space is shaped on purpose: American open space is what’s left over.
  • Small blocks make more corners, more routes, more street life.
  • A fine grid offers hundreds of routes; the tree offers one way out.
