We are decentralized, according to FediDB, the Fediverse has 14.2 million accounts. Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin have 551k users. Obviously we could be better spread out, but the fact that there's no instance at 50% share is already pretty nice.

And if a big instance enshittified, it would be drastically easier for everyone to leave it compared to convincing people to leave Reddit or something. You just export/import your user settings and you get to keep the communities you've subscribed to and block, and the users you've blocked.

86

Lemmy.world has enshitified. People still won't leave. We should be encouraging migration, not saying "it's good enough."

-1
lemmy.world

No. The idea is to have the constant looming threat of decentralization to keep the centralized system in check.

27

Except in this there's really not a lot of benefit when it comes to centralization so it would be better to decentralize to make sure no single instance becomes too big. I'd say world is already a bit too big because 90% of my subscribed feeds would be gone if world no longer federated with Piefed. World has significant sway on our side of the fediverse because smaller instances will probably feel dead (or turn into an echo chamber) if world won't federate with them.

9
Cethinreply
lemmy.zip

No, it isn't. People will refuse to leave, just as we've seen with FB, Reddit, etc. Lemmy.world has already enshitified from where it started, and from the position of nearly every other instance, yet people like you are still there. That's proof against your argument.

2

All those users are from different instances. That's decentralized.

If this community goes down or is otherwise not viable anymore, users can easily find another, similar community, while not having to switch to a different platform or instance or whatever themselves. That's how this is supposed to work.

Decentralization with different larger communities on different instances, with community members from all kinds of different instances, baby!

It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That's the only thing of value attached to my profile.

3

Settings -> scroll down to Import/Export Settings, click the Export button, repeat with Import in the new account, works even across Lemmy -> PieFed or PyLova.

You can, it's easy and quick. I just exported my profile settings (builtin to the default lemmy.world web UI) to a json file in a couple seconds. Confirmed it contains blocked users and communities.

I came here after lemmy.ml said it was shutting down. Idk what happened a with that but world seemed stable enough to not have that problem

11
lemmy.ml

.ml shutting down? That's the devs server unlikely it will shut down unless for maintenence

18
lemmy.world

the instance I was on straight up, said that it was shutting down, and that we should migrate to other instances. I did that and dropped the other account so I have no fucking clue what's going on over there.

6

Are you sure it was not lemm.ee? That one shut down like a year ago. Other smaller instances have likewise shut down since. But Lemmy.ml is one of the oldest instances and extremely unlikely to ever be shut down.

3
lemmy.world

actual question: How is Lemmy.ml functionally different than Lemmy.world?

4
cannedtunareply
lemmy.world

.ml has a lot of pro-Russia, pro-China types and criticism of either country can lead to a quick ban.

Functionally, there is no difference. Both run the same software, tho the versions may slightly differ as the devs, who run .ml, push updates.

For a functionally different experience try Mbin/Kbin (I forget which is the current), or Piefed. Piefed is similar to Lemmy with some quality of life improvements. Kbin/Mbin is a cross between “tweet” style posts, “blog” style posts like tumblr, and Reddit type posts.

26
Jiralreply
lemmy.world

Ok, I get it that there are pro-China guys, plenty of Russian regime fans around as well. But the thing that really caught me by surprise is that there are seriously people entirely serious about how North Korea is heaven earth.

From my experience, people in .world are way more open to positive discussion than .ml. Everything upsets .ml if you say the wrong thing or dont post the right way, to make them understand. Its to much fucking drama for no reason.

.world is doing its best to replicate every bad thing about reddit (starting with powermods) while avoiding every positive aspect it might have once had. I'm sure its admins have constant wet dreams about the day they can go public and sell it for parts.

.ml is trying to pretend it's not lemmygrad by putting on glasses with a fake nose and a moustache.

Both are toxic and harmful to the fediverse.

Similar things can be said of most other “big” instances to a lesser extent (including the one I'm in, but I'm too lazy to move out for a third time).

Frankly, the only instance I'd trust to not be politically compromised is fedinsfw, and I already got bit once by lemmynsfw's incompetent management (when they lost control of it to a rogue admin and it closed for months), so I'm not going back there.

Next time I have to move I'll be rolling my own private instance, or quitting altogether.

4

You might try one of the .zips. Very competent admins who defederate from next to nothing, leaving the choice up to the user (mainly as opt-in blocks, with just ~3 opt-out ones iirc).

If you roll your own though then probably PieFed/PyLova would be much easier than Lemmy to deploy and manage.

Regardless of how the most controversial communities on Lemmy.world decide to be, it's good to spread out and decentralize.

3

ML was run by the Lemmy frontend maintainers who drain the blood of puppies for sustenance and wish to kill you slowly and painfully as a source of income.

4

Precisely! What's the point of an overpopulated instance? It's more likely to affect users because of blanket instance blocklists.

8

I'm part of discuss.tchncs.de, more or less by accident. I just stumbled across that one when I wanted to make an account.

5

For real, do they want the Fediverse to turn into a shitshow like email?

2
iktreply
aussie.zone

it’s almost inevitable, no one cares about decentralisation

1
arrow74reply
lemmy.zip

Decentralized networks with large centralized communities is the best approach. You have to have that number of people to have interesting conversations and engagement.

But if all the users are spread out across several instances it becomes more resilient. If a large community/instance goes offline or there's a controversy then it can be migrated to a new instance

15
lemmy.world

I vaguely know what an instance is, but let me see if I can get this straight.

So an instance in the Fediverse is a website hosted either on a web hosting service, right? So it's like if I wanted to start one, it'd be similar to starting an old fashion forum like phpBB? I'd buy a domain, get a webhosting service, and install the software?

And the communities are analogous to sub forums? Except instead of me creating them, the users on my forum would create them?

3

I might start one then. I ran a couple of forums back in the 2000s. They were more barren than the Saharan desert, but I did it.

5

It's good to have it as an option but most people are frustrated if they can't just go to one place that has tons of people.

6

How are you so unable to use your brain?
The function and idea of decentralisation isn't to evenly distribute users across every instance, some instances being much larger than others is and extremely obvious thing.

-2
lemmy.world

The minimum 'dozens' is 2x12, I would think. So dozens of dozens of dozens is at least 24x24x24=13,824. That many dozen is 13,824x12 = 165,888. So I think dozens of dozens of dozens of dozen is right for 200,000.
What have I got wrong?

1
lemmy.world

Turns out federation is a moot point when everyone is in the same server and everywhere else is de-federated anyway because people, mods and instance admins cannot behave.

17
lemmy.zip

Are the two of us not on different instances? I might not understand what I thought I did.

4
bstixreply
feddit.dk

You are. You understand.

The real issue is where the communities are, rather than the users. Smaller instances can't easily attract large communities of people from outside their own, so the larger instances get to run the main communities for everyone. It's working as intended but it's all in the numbers.

A lot of the federation links were set up years ago, so I wonder if anyone is even activily trying to federate, like we used to when it all began.

Like, the NSFW instance went down some years ago, and I don't think anyone from the instance I'm using has bothered federating with a new one with that kind of content, or at least it doesn't pop up anymore. Which is fine, so I also don't bother, but for a newcomer it might seem odd that some instances have more connections than others and such.

1

I believe legitimately yes though I'm not super positive. I just see it scroll across my all feed already.

2

I get lots of content from other instances and when I search for communities I see all the instances that such-and-such community? If you have spent any time online you know that large != good community. Yes some are defed' but that's fine by me.

I think it's OK to have specific instances ban certain stuff especially piracy. Those issues concern legal things and risking a general lemmy instance which is fairly large is not worth it. Those things are better put on a dedicated instance that will be tolerant to legal problems. Same rules don't have to apply to all lemmy instances, each lemmy instance is better with their own set of rules or identities.

Yeah you're on the 'anarchist' instance. Lemmy.world users can't see the piracy community at all I think. Pretty sure they blocked it. At the very least, there used to be a piracy community on lemmy.world as well but it got banned and deleted.

1

I think that's a personal preference. From what I've heard, the devs used to be tankies (fuck those), other devs distanced themselves (I think?), tankies made Lemmy.ml (you can tell by the amount of bullshit on there, lol), some instances defederated from it (good) and now...I think we just go on? Idk, I'm probably completely wrong about that, please correct me. Anyway, fuck tankies.

I really like Lemmy. I probably won't leave. Sure, Mastodon works ig, but I'm not a Twitter person. I much prefer the Reddit-style...style of Lemmy. So, forgive me for this, but I'm staying.

2

I see, I was wrong. Checking the Lemmy repository, it seems that nutomic and dessalines still work on it. And yeah, these are hardcore tankies that I strongly disagree with.
With that said, these people run lemmy.ml. I'm not on lemmy.ml. I really don't think they can influence me in any way, cause of how Lemmy works. The first thing I do when signing up is block Yogthos, lemmy.ml, all communism communities and the lemmy.ml instance.

So...don't judge me for this, but I'm staying, even tho I disagree with the devs. I mean fuck, Elon Musk being human trash doesn't stop people from using Twitter and I bet way more people use Twitter than there are Lemmy users.

I slept 5 hours last night and I'm dead (suffering from relationship success) :P
If anything that I type doesn't make sense, please correct me!

5

It will grow exponentially, though, Reddi's latest update removed the r/all sub and its pissed off a heck of a lot of users.

Imo it doesn't even deserve to have consumers anymore, it's basically a Facebook newsfeed now, merely without a friends list.

0
lemmy.world

I'm here because they restricted old.reddit to only logged in users for "security reasons." The only time I log in is when I'm truly motivated to post something. Forcing me into their obnoxiously large, ad filled hamster wheel of scrolling when I just want to browse efficiently was the last straw.

9

That's fair enough, I don't blame you. The weird thing about that having to be logged in thing, is that as soon as I deleted the app; voila, you can browse posts from Google results, even up-vote and pressumedly comment, without even being logged in. What a predatory app.

It made a huge jump in 2023 and is mostly declining since then. Unfortunately fediverse observer shut down.

6

That's a shame to hear... either way, I'm just glad to be off of Reddit. I wasn't banned, just began to hate it with a passion.

3

We just recently fell below 30K, as the Fediverse Observer site crapped out.

We held 40K for a long time, down from 65K at the peak, but our decline in active users continues, despite all that Reddit continues to do to piss off their userbase.

3
lemmy.ca

High scores are neat; but we all realize that's effectively just trainspotting, right? Popularity just means popularity, and laundering that out to some notion of good/effective/accurate/respected is neither good nor healthy ; right?

Still, grats on having a higher number.

2

Nah.

If you view corporate social media like fb/twitter/reddit as a morally wrong + negative influence on society, then this is a moral win thus worth celebrating.

Especially when you add in that the main barrier to any social media product gaining traction is first hitting that critical mass of enough posts to make it worth returning to -> habit forming + habit replacing.

Only one that matters is MAU and that has been flatlining, and going down if you remove the nsfw influx. It’s really not going as well as it should: the internet is growing every day, and reddit, X, FB, and the others are all cozying up to fascism, and we’re struggling to show meaningful growth.

1

Sort of - it has been going down even if you don't discount that. The peak at Rexodus was 65K, we held 40-45K for a long time, but just as the Fediverse Observer site stopped working we had finally dropped below 30K (see last Fedilytics post), after trending towards that for a very long time.

We continually lose more people than come in to replace them. And as they leave, they tell people how horrific their experiences were here, having been chased away by trolls (we require a lot of blocking actions performed at the user level to maintain sanity here).

3
kingofrasreply
lemmy.world

After more than 2 years, I discovered that a large portion of Lemmy is closset pro trump, and anti elections, while calling themselves “left”.

Some random mod even went through the trouble of banning me from a couple dozen communities on their instance because I encourage early voting. Encouraging voting equals being a zionist over there. So yeah, this thing is dying.

The main reason Lemmy exists and is free is because instance owners are seeing it as a tool to radicalise unsuspecting users. Turns out these platforms all come with a spez bolted on.

3
OpenStarsreply
discuss.online

In fairness they don't actually care about Trump so much as "death to America", so wanting to use him to bring about the end of that empire. And that's not so much closeted as it is trumpeted loudly and proudly everywhere.

And likewise conservative parties in the UK, and elsewhere in the Western civilization. Also, according to them, unironically Russia was "forced" into invading Ukraine, bc of NATO aggression or whatevs. And there's no genocide going on inside of China. That's... good to know, I suppose, or would have been good if it were true.

But they are (not even alternative) right about one thing: what are we going to do about it? If nothing, as is roughly 80% the case so far, then that's that.

2
kingofrasreply
lemmy.world

I get it in a world that has shifted dramatically to the right, the left has been squeezed and compressed and pushed and pushed towards more extreme values to counterbalance that.

But the death of an empire seems to me like the equivalent of shooting your own foot to forget about your toothaches.

And more importantly, that infamous quote comes up:

“You fool! As if it matters how a man an empire falls down.” To which his companion replies: “When the fall’s all that’s left, it matters a great deal.”

1

Nobody was pushed into anything - they chose it. We can watch videos of people being killed in Tiannamen Square, while they choose to believe that nobody died there. Yes, people "push" back, saying that people died there, and look here's all this proof, like here you can talk to this person who was there even... but in return they stuck their head into the sand and close their eyes and ears and believe whatever fantasy they wish.

And then work to overthrow America, along with the rest of the Western World (the USA was only a high priority due to resources, but all nations nearby and especially adjacent to Russia would be nice plump targets if that were possible...).

Exactly like MAGA in the USA, the various "issues" (like anti-abortion, anti-trans agenda, or pro-states rights, except when they feel otherwise then it's anti-states rights, etc.) don't matter nearly so much as hollowing themselves out to allow themselves to be controlled by those at the top. Tankies will debate-bro you endlessly, using logical fallacy after logical fallacy forever, but at the end of the day somehow none of the facts actually matter, and it devolves simply into advancing the agendas of nations that aren't the least bit leftist in reality. Like the fall of Western civilizations, though at this point I halfway expect the narrative to change to supporting the USA as it works to become Russia's ally.

2

Why is it the only one that matters? We aren't a startup trying to attract VC or go public or something. What matters to the users of Lemmy is how much content is here and whether it's high quality or just bot spam.

2

I think what matters is funding and donation, not monthly active users. As long as people keep donating, the servers stay up and stay ad-free. Lemmy can cater to a specific paying user base and thrive from there. More active users that do not donate can be detrimental as the revenue does not scale by user base as it is not ad-driven but donation driven. More users can indeed increase potential donations but it's not a guarantee.
