With central hubs closing, is the future of video game decomps really this bleak?

I’ve actually just started getting involved in the scene the "right" way. I’ve been practicing MIPS assembly and C coding for a while now, and I was really looking forward to finally understanding how my favorite games work under the hood. But now I’m genuinely concerned I’ve shown up too late.

Between the influx of AI slop and seeing central hubs like decomp.dev shut down, the sentiment on Lemmy makes it sound like the community aspect of decomp is completely dead. Then I go over to Reddit's /r/decomps and see people celebrating AI because it’s speeding up port releases.

I actually want to write the code. I want to understand the architecture, learn how these games function, and help build cool mods that are only possible when you have clean, human-readable source code. But I'm worried the whole space is getting flooded by people who just know how to prompt an LLM to spit out a barely functional port.

What is actually going to happen to the decomp scene? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for people who care about the craftsmanship, or are we watching a truly amazing community face an extinction event?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Is Surprisingly More Different Than You Think | IGN Preview

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is far from a 1:1 remake. When I played it, I found familiar rooms containing redesigned challenges that change how the world and player function. I spoke to old friends who had new things to say that added texture to Hyrule and its people. And, I unpacked how its updated controls and detailed art design redefine its old-school combat and puzzle solving for the modern day. This remake isn’t about scope; it’s about depth. The Zelda series is full of old stories, and the Ocarina of Time remake presents itself as a legend retold, with clear theatrical inspirations that have completely changed how I’m approaching it. multicommunity bug

Bug Report

Sorry I swear I won't post again! But thank you for such a good app!

Describe the issue:

When trying to fill a 5th multicommunity, I can only see 4 multicommunities and cant see the 5th one. It seems the scroll is bugging out. This is also an issue when you tap the info icon on the multicommunity feed. You can't scroll through all of your communities in that multi.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Make 5 or more multis
  2. Try to add a community to one of the last ones you made.
  3. In the add popup window, scroll doesn't work to see the ones hidden at the bottom of the list.

Device Information

  • App Version: 1.0.479 (479)

  • Platform: android

  • OS Version: CPH2551_16.0.3.505(EX01)

  • Migration: n/a (attempts: 0)

Modified Settings

The following settings have been changed from defaults:

  • defaultRoute: /community?postCommonListingType=Subscribed&hint=Frontpage (default: null)
  • defaultPostSort: Scaled (default: Active)
  • cardType: list (default: card)
  • drawerStates9: [true, true, false, false, true, true, true, true, true] (default: [true, true, true, true, true, true, true, true, true])
  • theme: dark (default: system)

Favorite Communities Bug?

Bug Report

Describe the issue: Just wanted to point out that anytime I try to remove a favorite community, in the app, it doesn't go away. The only way I've been able to clear my favorites is by clearing all app data on my OS which is Oxygen OS (I own a One Plus Open).

If this is a known bug, the feel free to delete my post, but I didn't see anything about this when I searched the community posts.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. On the left toolbar under the favorits category, click the three dots next to community and choose remove from favorites.
  2. It will now disappear.
  3. Back out of the tool bar and refresh your feed. Open up the left toolbar again and the community has returned to your favorites.

Broadly speaking, what is your current take on AI?

I’m curious to get a general pulse on how people here view the rapid evolution of AI, specifically on lemmy. On one side, there’s growing interest in local open-weights models, self-hosted setups, and practical developer/productivity tools. On the other, there seems to be a growing list, I can't keep track of, that are seen as major concerns. I'm not here to pick sides or be biased in one corner. Im genuinely curious what people have to say about AI in general. And maybe it will help me and other get a better handle on how we perceived it in our ever changing world.

It's a weird request but if Paramount decides to not greenlight Paul Wesley's Kirk and Crew, I hope IDW does a Year One comic.

I get it strange because we have TOS comics which are great of course. But I've become quite attached to the redesigned Enterprise, the updated interiors and the new faces to our familiar crew. So it would be cool see what we could have been if a show was greenlit. Hell who knows what Paramount will do once SNW ends next year. They didn't sell off the sets, so there's always a chance that the new trek showrunner still does it. But IDW would be a good fall back.

New Album by M83 - I Wrote You A Letter

Anthony Gonzalez intentionally stepped away from commercial, radio friendly pop machinery this time around. He teamed back up with Benoit de Villeneuve to strip things down to his early 2000s bedroom recording roots. Outside of the massive shoegaze wall of sound on the opening single Blister Sunrise, this is a heavily atmospheric, melancholic, and mostly instrumental record.

I hate to say it but I haven't been very active on lemmy, but I want to be

Hopefully things change once lemmy.world updates to 0.19 with scaled sorting. And maybe you guys and gals have some advice for fixing my issue.

To keep my feed fresh I subscribed to all the big communities full of memes. They do have engagement beyond funny jokes, but I'm tired of how political everything is.

I'm not trying to bury my head in the sand, on the contrary, im highly aware how much fascism has taken its grips on the world. But I don't need to be reminded everytime I'm on lemmy.

So I'm hoping once scaled sorting is on lemmy.world, the lemmyverse will transform. I hope I start seeing my hobbyist community come to life.

Or if people have recommendations for large communities not full of politics that works too. Maybe memes and shitposts aren't for me.

Why we might be alone

A public lecture from a scientist adding to the conversation. What makes this lecture interesting is he is not disproving that alien life can exist, but instead trying to curb expectations because of the little data we have to back up claims. More importantly is the message that it is important for scientists to be care of biases when discussing this topic.

[Fresh Album] Closure in Moscow - Soft Hell

A couple weeks behind, but life's been busy. Can't believe its been 9 years since Pink Lemonade! But this album was worth the wait. I absolutely love how his voice reminds me of Cedric Bixler-Zavala from the Mars Volta.

Rock music has been good lately.
