As of today, I have stopped using Reddit entirely.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.zip/post/73406944

It all started when my main Reddit account was banned—simply because I posted a comment criticizing the banning of a subreddit—resulting in the immediate loss of an account I’d held for about 4 years, with 102k karma. I appealed, but I received no response—not even a reason for my ban, nor any notification that I had been banned in the first place. I’ve filed appeals repeatedly over the past few months, but today, I’m finally giving up. Fuck Spez and his pathetic, whore of a family. When I submitted my appeals, there wasn’t even any indication that they had gone through; I was just left in total silence, unable to do a thing. I started using an existing alt account for basic tasks, but today, that account was banned too—all because I recommended the non-profit, open-source "VPN Gate" project to someone who was complaining about the mandatory KYC (age verification) requirements being imposed in my country. The only reason I was still using Reddit was out of habit, and I’ve decided it’s time to change some of my habits. Ultimately, this is the inevitable fate of every centralized corporation—without exception. There’s no guarantee that some complete moron won’t end up in charge of any of them. I wish more people realized this. If four years of my effort are being sold off to AI data companies, and everything can be permanently wiped out overnight without a word of warning, then that is, quite simply, data theft. Once again, fuck you, Spez—you absolute piece of shit. If you had even an ounce of courage or integrity, you wouldn’t have imposed those damn API restrictions in 2023 and ruined Reddit. I truly regret the four years I spent here, but it’s better to cut my losses now. Goodbye, you son of a bitch Spez, and your puppet, Reddit...

Oh wow strong move, getting banned and calling it "I stopped using it" haha get real people. Either delete your accounts or maybe brag about something else

14

Could have intentionally gone away with a bang. Think making a popular post, then changing the image on its hosting server to say "Fuck Spez removing RSS, justice for Aaron Swartz, check out join-lemmy.org"

Well deciding to not negotiate to have your account unbanned or not creating a new account is a decision too.

But fine. Go beat your chest and be a moral warrior. Not like the outcome isn't the same and we're not all here supporting the same human-run fediverse and have to work out how to move forward with each other regardless how we got here.

What is it you're hoping for anyways for all this distinction? A medal? A special icon? How important does this have to be for you? Or you just itching for stupid infights?

Thanks, you can mail me my medal, I will PM you the shipping details.

Didn't offer. Just asked about where your level of how special you think you are is. I see we're at the "Wow: The entitlement to plant yourself as the topic." Main character Level here.

1

Yes, very special, that's why I made a post saying I'm off of reddit please give me credit for getting banned.

1
lemmy.world

I didn't get banned I just quit. It was clear that it was going start rotting and it has.

20

Dunno how long you have been gone, but it’s been bad for a long time. I deleted my account when the TPA thing was going on, and it was already bad by then. Have not been back and won’t.

1
lemmy.world

I posted this picture, it got taken down by the mods. I was just pointing out that people are being wow'd by the "flying" car but shouldn't forget the man behind it.

15

Nazis like nazi shit, but they don’t like someone reminding them their nazi shit is nazi shit.

6

Kinda insane if you showed this photo to someone in 2023 one might think it's photoshopped.

2
lemmy.world

You can still go into your account and nuke all your posts and comments

7

yup use POWERSUITE delete. very simple, best to do only few subs at a time., as trying to do multiple sub deletes seems to cause it to stall.

5

I prefer a full archive (EU data checkout is best), then mass overwrite with "Protesting Reddit's [insert policy list]" and links to Lemmy so people can request the content by messaging me here.

3

I got permanently suspended for unauthorized activity but I've only ever browsed and commented.

And no one stole my 30 random character password with zero cross site duplication, either.

6

thats reddits AI moderation for you, very arbitrary, unless you are a propaganda bot, which they barely touch or deal with. they do go after the spammers that reddit isnt getting thier slice of the pie in.

4
lemmy.world

Being banned from Reddit is a compliment these days. That was the site that used to host thedonald, fatpeople and even pedo communities (and femaledatingstrstegy).

I deleted my old account (14 years I think it was), created a new one a few months later, got banned within a few weeks for being a bigot or whatever.

Which was weird, because a lot of my posts were literally defending trans people, but, there were quite a few arguing with the gun community (so, I'm guessing someone felt insecure they might lose their guns and reported me for bullshit).

It's not even a good place to visit anymore. All the local communities have been overrun by Gun, drug and companies and right wing lobbyists it feels like.

It basically became the equivalent of facebook, but they actually ban you if you disagree with their opinion. Lemmy is rapidly getting better

7
lemmy.zip

I think the “feminist” one (quotations because that’s not what feminism is about, Charlie Brown) was FemaleDatingStrategy. Basically red pill but for women. Terrifying stuff

3

That's the one I was thinking. And yes, you are correct. I knew feminist wasn't the right word

Which of course, also brings up all the other "red pill" ones too

3

They just got rid of r/all won't work on mobile. Legit no reason for me to go there now. I would at least get some sort of news there

7
lemmy.world

Left reddit after the API fiasco. You will be fine, anyway reddit is in a very rapid decline.

15
zenreply

It's really bad these days. A lot of the smaller subs are riddled with blatant AI slop posts and comments. What's even the point of being on the site when you're talking with bots?

4
lemmy.world

I’m in for making DIY Luigi prayer Candles and posting the instructions on witches vs patriarchy. Instant shadow ban years old account high karma no further correspondence from Reddit

8

I'm in for saying riot police should quit their jobs in shame following the Roe v Wade ruling. Nowadays I'm blocked from even accessing reddit.com for some fucking reason, even without a VPN

6

If you haven't been banned from reddit yet, you're probably a bot. They don't want humans to use their site.

7

I banned Reddit a few years ago. They broke my policy so they had to go.

13
feddit.uk

Totally agree with you. The moderators are sanctimonious, cencorious, petty idiots who do not tolerate freedom of speech or thought. I was banned for pointing out that in the USA there is a thriving business that treats tropical fish unethically. This was the offending comment. 'According to major veterinary organizations and animal welfare groups, intentionally breeding animals for physical extremes which inherently causes chronic suffering, reduces life spans, and passes on harmful mutations is considered highly unethical. Despite clear evidence that the breeding practices of certain fish breeds such as Goldfish lead to them to suffering from a range of different conformational malformations causing pain, discomfort and life limiting conditions, some breeding societies have followed societal fashion for ‘cute’ fish, prioritising the aesthetics, rather than the health of animals. The types of Goldfish most prone to illness are long-finned varieties and heavily inbred colour morphs. Their genetic history and physical traits frequently leave them dealing with chronic conditions including abnormal behaviours. The breeders produce fish with biological genetic inbuilt obsolescence.'

4

reddits own AI moderation probably banned alot more than mods did last year. they wiped out so much content, that they are forcing logins now, because its half AI mostly.

4

I stopped using them years ago… it’s a garbage pile over there. Nooooooo thanks.

5
lemmy.world

I left once they started blocking VPN access, and u didn't want to play cat and mouse changing VPN locations.

6

Ok. Try to not throw a huge wall of text please. I hate reddit too, but this is super boring.

9

I have always wondered if some griefer could find an exploit that leveraged the ban hammer… and used a script that just banned everyone.

Like, literally everyone. All at once. Bots. Humans. Mods. Admins. No distinction. If you log in using the front door, the account is banned.

I’m not much for chaos, but abrupt chaos at a deserving target would be enjoyable to rubberneck at.

6
lemmy.ml

Alternatively reddit is done using you lol. Welcome to lemmy!

9

apparently not, reddit trying to take down the spammers, and bots, that arnt propaganda. but it also catches strays which are normal users too. they lost alot of content/ traffic from banning people in the last year.

2
lemmy.zip

Welcome to the club! Every account I’ve made has been banned for “content violations” with no other explanation. I had a roommate who got banned a while back and I’m thinking they think I’m her? No idea but posting pictures of soap I make doesn’t really seem permaban-worthy 🤷🏻‍♀️

4
fyzzlefryreply

Have you tried reposting old content? That seems to be all they want.

6

Same bruh. Reddit’s decline is real. In Indian feeds, I only see people posting reels from Insta, thirst trap LLM slop in fashion subReddits or sexually deprived men fantasising about content creators and bollywood actresses in celeb subReddits.

8

I've been getting this for a few weeks now, no way I'm making another account. Obviously loading the home page like 3 times per day is bot behaviour!

Side note - If you save a multi reddit, it skips verification and autoloads old reddit. However if you try to load any comments it will block you.

7
lemmy.world

i recommend installing block site extension in your browser and adding reddit to the list of blocked sites. i did it almost 2 years ago and still sometimes instinctively type reddit.com when opening a new tab... but it's getting better.

my account got first permabanned without warning or explanation from worldnews sub after i (politely) suggested that maybe blowing up a school full of kids (30 dead) is not the right thing to do even if a terrorist is hiding inside (under an article about case in gaza). then i still sticked around for my hobby subs for a while but the sute kept showing all kinds of other content to my feed. one day there was a picture showing a WW2 nazi flag on someone's front yard in ohio and people were suggesting they should bring some veterans to talk to them and explain why it is wrong. i said that wouldn't help and that people like this should be "tarred and feathered" - which was, according to reddit, not acceptable behaviour because "reddit is trying to be a place where everyone can feel safe and me threatening other people is undermining it". banned and out.

3

You made me go back to check. 4k post, 66k comment, 15 year account. I was part of the digg exodus.

6

It depends, I had a couple big hits and was at about 1m. If they posted a lot then 100k is not much.

2
lemmy.world

I'm skeptical that you even get to interact with real people on reddit.

2

the large subs, news, politics, asks, aita(all variants), basically anything potentially politically(includes music, sports tv shows/movies), newsworthy. small niche ones you are likely to find some useful stuff you are discussing about, the ones that barely has posts inundating the sub that is.

1

I've installed the News Feed Eradicator extension because I am still too addicted to reddit as I often type it out in the browser URL bar. I might start counting days as if counting nofap.

3

Every time someone uses the acronym KYC I can't help but think it stands for 'Kill your Children'.

it seems you are using mobile, or the app. on the phone they do everything in thier power to force people to use thier app, which allows them to access more data on you. seems they havnt made significant moves ye to fully force logins, or get rid of old reddit yet. on desktop you it still can use old reddit on most browsers. on mobile you use the sinkit extension, or yeoldreddit.

2
lemy.lol

Not for long. They’re making it only users who have logged in within I think 3 or 6 months will be able to access old. Fuck reddit. Delete your account and fuck them off for good

2

still doable firefox, on mobile i use sinkold so OLDREDDIT will work on mobile, and makes the old reddit UI usable on mobile, so no zooming in or out. also rearranges the layout to make it easier.

1

you can just type in your name on reddit while not logged in, it will say error or suspended. if you can see posts when you click on the profile you arnt banned.

1

I am with you on this. I have also deleted my account. The bots and mods there are totally out of control. There are no human interacting anymore. Ukraine needs to take out a few more dozen data centers.

1
reddthat.com

I got a bunch of temporary bans but never cared, they were always undone. Then I got permabanned so I appealed and the last ban got removed but the permanent ban stuck. I took a couple of months before I decided the internet needed my hot takes once again.

3

i got an abnormal amount of bans/temp bans, warnings right at the beginning of trumps 2nd term, and right after musk told spez to start suppressing anti-musk, anti-trump rhetoric.

1

The next step is to block that shithole entirely from your feed. I use UBlacklist. It’s pretty easy to set up.

2
lemmy.world

Cool, just an FYI when I got perma banned from Reddit a few years ago I was able to go back into my past posts and change them.

I generated some AI gibberish slop and posted it in all of my past posts just so they couldn’t benefit from my past participation.

If your still able to do so I highly recommend poisoning your content.

2

You cannot do that anymore. They own everything you provided to them.

2
thelemmy.club

You can make a new account though, even with the same email address (or at least that used to be possible).

1
lemmy.world

Have you tried recently? Because the paradigm of having many reddit throwaways is a thing of the past. These days you can still register as many account as you want but the instant shadowban comes the moment you try to post something.

Emphasis on the shadowban, which is the default behavior. You can still submit posts and comments from as many accounts as you want but nobody else is going to see it.

5

if you use the same ip/device/browser then ban evasion will happen almost as fast you make an account. most forks have anti-fingerprinting capabilities, the less obscure the forks reddit likely wont ban you immediately. i made an account on librewolf after lurking on reddit from a shadowbans after a year(i think they lift bans on some people after a long time).

an exception is if you had dozens, or even hundreds of accounts spamming, and they banned all of them, its much harder to get around that. these are not your normal users, its the ones that spam thier businesses, or drive traffic to thier own site or its OF account. reddit start looking harder, like what kind of IP your using, IP thats from an abused source(used by spammers and bots).

1
lightnsfwreply
reddthat.com

My alts got popped pretty quickly for ban evasion when my main account got banned. I didn't even have email addresses associated with them.

4
lemmy.zip

Yeah, the moment you use a connected mail address, number or IP address, it's banhammer time. I got permabanned for advocating violence... when I discussed suicidal ideation

3

Mine was for saying child rapists should be executed. If their difference of opinion opinion on that topic is that strong I'm glad to no longer contribute to their platform.

1

I actually think I got shadowbanned because I was on an IP that was used by someone who was probably banned and my account got associated.

1

most people wont risk that, plus reddit will ban people faster if you use the same email. i just used a fork of FF, and old reddit and spin up a new email on a trusted email like hotmail(i dont use that for anything else). gmail used to be super trusted by reddit until Google started to restrict the amount of emails you can have per device. niche subs only, and you are safe, but on any of the large subs on the main page, will likely get you banned, because i think the filters/detection is heavier there.

new device/IP change/browser is enough as well.

2

Remember this valuable lesson, it will serve you well here.

Think of Lemmy as "Reddit's communist cousin", all the same "rules" still apply.

0
lemmy.world

Good for you I guess? I actually went back to using reddit a few months ago. Lemmy just isn't big enough for the communities I want to engage with. I have tried to create spaces here, and nobody interacts with them.

As much as reddit sucks, that's still where a lot of people are. The other issue with lemmy is that it's a bunch of leftists all fighting and arguing with eachother about who is the most pure leftist. It's annoying. But, you'll see that all in due time. Best of luck to you with this place. I guess.

It's a small space and you'll see the same people a lot, so be prepared for that.

You will only feel the pain once you get shadow banned by simply using a VPN. You don't have the shadow ban yet I guess that's why you still stay with it.

1
lemmy.world

Haha, I've been banned from reddit loads of times already. I just create new accounts, and move, get a new IP address and I'm all set. Granted that was all a happy accident, not something I planned.

Honestly, I am back on reddit bcz this place is too small, and it's kinda toxic. Everybody spends their time here arguing over who is the right kind of leftist and insulting anybody else who doesn't share their exact opinions.

Plus, I do gamedev and play DnD and this place is dead as a doornail for those types of communities go.

I left reddit entirely for a few years for what it's worth.

2

Understandable, although I am hoping more people come to lemmy to fill the gaps

1
lemmy.world

No, you're just not very smart and don't understand metaphors.

1
lemmy.world

Gee thanks, this has been very productive for both of us! Speaking as someone who lived in a household with domestic abuse, I really appreciate my situation growing up being compared a fascist takeover of our government.

1
Doomsiderreply
lemmy.world

Besides the companies that abuse us, the government abuses us as well. In a lot of ways the current administration mirrors what an abusive relationship is like. One that we as citizens are compelled to endure. But unlike a personal abusive relationship, there is no escape.

If you cannot use the information then please pass it along to someone who can.

2
lemmy.world

I don't need the information, and neither does anybody else. If you want to be helpful, give people resources to contact their elected representatives, and/or start volunteering with your local community, and make a plan to get out if things come to that. Everything else including this, is just noise.

1

I would disagree, lots of people do need help and we are being abused by the government and corporations. It is important to recognize this.

Reddit is an abusive entity borne out by the fact that they are thieves of the commons, taking our collective knowledge and communities for themselves, and locking them up behind a paywall. I don't care what their abusive terms of service are, what they did is wrong. But this isn't even about them though because everyone is doing this same shit.

I have already been involved in local elections. I have stood on the capital of my state demanding rights for other disfranchised citizens. I have gone to DC to lobby my representatives multiple times. I know the power of community organizing and influencing local elections. I also know how little power we have on a state level and how we basically have zero power at the federal level (non-wealthy people)

We have problems that can't be fixed by flexing our political power alone. This is the real conflict we face and is why so many people have been disenfranchised.

1
lemmy.world

This place is so much worse. The mods are unchecked and twice as power hungry. The users are way more out of touch.

This place took every single corporate control measure that reddit implemented and built lemmy out of it. No lessons were learned.

This place is a snuff box for leftist.

-8
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Saying this unironically while using a Lemmy.world account. Try some other instances that don't ban/defederate from absolutely everything that doesn't fit their tiny reddit-shaped minds before actually complaining.

4
lemmy.world

Responses like this are such low effort. What is wrong with you. Who gives a shit what instance it is. It's all the same.

-1

Low effort is not taking the time to understand what instances even are or how they work. It's literally not the same. There's many other instances and communities that are blocked by lemmy.world so how would you know?

1
lemmy.world

Resorting to hyperbole weakens your argument not mine.

I have not said it was a leftist utopia. When reddit started it was community based. We built these spaces ourselves and they reflected our ideals, and that's what made them good and what drew people in. It's the same thing a lot of leftists say they want, not just online but in government, in business, everywhere. Cooperatives. Voting systems where our votes actually matter, instead of smoke and mirrors covering for a small group of elites.

Then as these sites got bigger, corporate interests started rolling out features that slowly took those structures apart, and we didn't even notice. Every change favored the company. The community lost control over its own content and its own spaces, and in its place we got an overseer, a mod in charge. And a lot of these mods act like abusive police with their authority. Unchecked power, no accountability, punishing people however they want. That's everything leftists say they're against.

Think how insane it is that people here push for democracy everywhere else, but when it comes to our own digital spaces they just accept it, and do not even catch that contradiction.

-1
Doomsiderreply
lemmy.world

I was there from the start on Reddit. I saw how my left leaning views were accepted, then eventually rejected, and finally demonized. I remember peacefully talking about Linux for years then getting constantly brigaded by Winbros. Don't think I wasn't there. I left, I was not banned. It was definitely heading that way though.

Before Reddit it was forums, Usenet, IRC, BBS, etc. We definitely need to return to simpler times where everyone isn't corralled into the same place to be propagandised to. I stopped Meta during the pandemic when I saw them spread misinformation on purpose to divide people. It is clear major platforms are a cancer on our society.

Democracy is a window dressing for control by the wealthy at this point. We definitely need to fix things, but we need to take a long hard look at what we have and why we have it first.

You are correct, we should take back our digital space. That is why I am here. That is why I am trying to replace corporate services with a homelab.

1

Thanks. It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this attitude even if we disagree on things. I don't know how things should be but I know this isn't it. I think we need to deconstruct a lot of things on the left including these spaces to understand how they took it over and took control.

2
discuss.tchncs.de

Apart from habits, what were the sub-reddits that kept you there, and stopped from transitioning completely before? We can start making similar content and bring more people here.

36

Hamsters for one. Opae Ula, Wallsted Method, ecosphere, other sort of niche hobbyist/petcare topics

2

I try to keep mostly to lemmy, but the American football scene and the OSRS scene are nearly non-existent here. OSRS being the worst of the two, there's almost never any updates or posts even. Yeah yeah, be the change I wanna see, but I don't wanna talk to myself, that's how dead it is lol

2

Lemmy does not have a very active Boardgames community or a Blood on the Clocktower community. Just doesn't have the numbers for it.

2
nogooduserreply
lemmy.world

I went cold turkey after the third party app debacle but I really missed the home assistant subreddit. There is a home assistant community but it’s nowhere near as active.

40
lemmy.world

With respect, "it's not as active" for a Home Assistant community as in what? You don't get replies to your questions? People don't ask you enough of them?

If the former, that is a genuine problem, but hasn't been my experience on Lemmy. There are fewer responses, but they are more thought out and less likely to be puns, references, and other low-hanging-fruit jokes.

If the latter, then proactively make guides so people will be more likely to join? Someone has to be the first on the dance floor.

3
nogooduserreply
lemmy.world

That’s a fair point and it is the latter.

I have only posted one question about a problem that I had and I got an answer that resolved my issue.

Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to help build up the community. I have a very small and basic setup and don’t have time to build it up let alone make posts about building it up.

2
lemmy.world

If 100% of posed questions are answered, I don't think it makes sense to call it any flavor of inactive.

1
nogooduserreply
lemmy.world

A sample size of one isn’t sufficient to conclude that every question gets answered.

Also, I didn’t say that it was inactive. I said that it was nowhere near as active as Reddit.

There are about two or three posts per week which includes all the release announcements for home assistant and various components.

On Reddit there was at least five or ten times that activity with posts every day including questions, automations and dashboard ideas.

0
lemmy.world

Okay? The ocean has more water than my sink, but you don't see me complaining that my sink has too little water.

0

You seem to have got your knickers in a twist over something and I don’t understand what.

Let me summarise the conversation from my point of view. Someone asked what subreddits kept someone on Reddit. I made the comment that a particular sub that I liked on Reddit was more active than the equivalent communities on Lemmy. It wasn’t a complaint but a statement of fact about what made the transition more difficult for me which I made to contribute to the discussion. Then you seem to have taken that as a complaint and taken offence at it for some reason.

0

I miss getting help with all sorts of stuff, home improvement and repair and how to stuff, brewing, growing stuff, and the like. Plus they have way better animal videos, to say nothing of all the other video content not found on lemmy.

Can't be helped, reddit is unusable, politicians and rich dickheads are leaning on them to make moderation decisions and they are trhing to bend us over for them.

9
dhorkreply
lemmy.world

Not OP, but there are a lot of niche subreddits where you simply can't get information anywhere else. I quit Reddit entirely after the APIocalypse, and I know around that time people started replicating the extensive network of Sports team subreddits in various places here. But, there are simply not enough people here to make that work.

I have not logged in (other than to manipulate the crypto out of my Reddit Vault and sell it before it crashed) since then. There are precisely four subreddits I monitor via RSS because the info simply doesn't make it here. But Reddit has already announced their RSS access is going away. When it does, I guess I'll just have get that info somewhere else.

18
theedqueenreply

The niche subreddits are really hard to adjust without. I would’ve gone cold turkey if it weren’t for those because you simply can’t find the info anywhere else. I was using RDX to browse those subs but now that’s gone too (for now, hopefully the dev finds a workaround)

11

It’s all mostly bots and repost slop. At least it was when I left. I can’t see it being different now.

6

I was able to use RDX up until a few days ago. Like you I was mostly out after the API debacle but I did use RDX to browse r/all for mental junk food. I started out just doing it once in a while but I got more in the habit even as the quality dropped. It’s for the best that I no longer have that crutch. I will miss being able to look up the post episode discussion of whatever show I’m currently streaming. I don’t see Lemmy getting the critical mass for those types of discusaions anytime soon.

3
theedqueenreply

Yeah it’s probably better I don’t have the crutch either. I was using it a lot to read stuff like AMITAH and the amount of stuff that was either fake or AI was through the roof. I guess I just wish I had more lead time to wean myself off because being cut off just like that is a hard struggle.

4
lemmy.zip

That reddit shit slowly becoming Instagram 2, most of the origin community already gone ;(

8

Gone where though? I wish some of them atleast come here......

4

I've been clean cold turkey from Reddit for over 3 years now since I made my Lemmy account but I still really miss active discussions about newly released games :(

You can make a post in one of the gaming comms here and sometimes you'll get a couple folks, but it doesn't really catch on the same. I had a grand old time reading tons of build discussion and memes when Elden Ring came out, but since Nightreign came out I effectively haven't interacted with its community at all.

I like Lemmy specifically because it is smaller and more close knit, usually. But it misses out on some of the bigger town-square types of discussion that reddit could enable because reddit had sixty five gorillion users, especially in the gaming space.

I expect that whatever discussion of this type doesn't exist on reddit probably exists on Discord but that also sucks for a completely separate, but similar, set of reasons. I still use Discord, as of currently, but I hate interacting in big public servers and never do it, and it misses a lot of the thread-and-comment structure that I liked so much about Reddit. (Discord does technically support threads, but they work differently and nobody uses them properly anyway.)

10

I read reddit but no longer contribute in any way. Activity level is just way lower here, especially for niche interests. I've increased the amount of other websites I look at (here, hacker news, steam forums) overall

Most of my habits stemmed from the fact that I found the general chaos of Mastodon overwhelming and too complex for daily use. For instance, while Reddit has its own straightforward website and app, Mastodon lacks a clear, simple interface—which made it seem overly complicated to me from the start. Consequently, I always found it much easier to quickly hop onto Reddit to post or leave a comment. Most importantly, the number of active users on Mastodon is, unfortunately, still far lower than on Reddit.

You're on the Lemmy version of the fediverse. Mastodon is like Twitter, whereas Lemmy and Piefed are like Reddit.

  • Change up how you see stuff: Hot, Scaled, Every 6 hours. Active is the least active ironically.
  • Remember, this is mostly not an angry factory like reddit, so you're going to go through withdrawal. I'm serious.
  • Upvote if you like it an post stuff that interests you.
  • Remember there are still trolls here. They brigade and fight with you for odd reasons. That should give you a heads up if that starts to happen.
  • Not every instance is great.
12

Since Mastodon was mentioned I'll also add that a thoroughly hate that Mastodon doesn't even attempt to show you anything unless you enable Javascript. I'm a user of NoScript so websites don't run JS by default unless I explicitly opt in. For most sites that's not a huge deal since it's just a one time thing but because Mastodon is federated I need to opt in every instance individually which means 90% of the time on the rare occasion I visit a Mastodon link nothing loads initially.

I wish Mastodon did the thing most non-sketchy websitss do and renders at least a basic view of its content without JS so I could at least decide if it's worth enabling JS in the first place.

Don't know what his subreddits were, but I still go there for guitar, and luthier (well 8 guitar related subs in total).

We have a NDP community here, but it's not very active, even though I suspect that the sub is mostly bots at this point.

I love that it says "This account is banned" Then immediately "Jump back into explore communities" Lol

They have ads? Joking but I never saw any with firefox on ublock. So at least I screwed them back a little, but they got all my comments for free, no small thing adding up all of our contributions, worth more than the ad revenue in many ways.

I kind of wanted to leave mine up for posterity though. For the real people that may come across the stuff. But perhaps that was a mistake I've been turning that over, wondering if I should've just deleted it all.

I get where you're coming from. It feels wrong to let years of writing just vanish when it might still help someone. But leaving it up keeps concentrating all that value inside a company that only ever wanted it to sell ads and train models with it. It's already bad enough that a normal search often means appending "reddit" to the query. They gain so much power from that dynamic that I'd rather burn my old writing with me than keep feeding it. And honestly, since they can wipe an account overnight without a word, "posterity" there is rented at best. I'd rather start over and help build the information here, in the fediverse, where it can't be taken away by anyone person or organization.

You sold me. Unfortunately I don't know if I can even remember all my handles, but I should try. Although the data scrapers have it all already by now, at least reddit and new crawlers won't.

I wonder if there is a program to download all of your conversation trees first for yourself, then delete? I should look around for that first.

4

I used that to delete all my posts, and then a month later had a notification for a reply on a post that from my profile page I couldn't see (as they were all deleted) but on the thread was still visible.

Don't delete, edit your posts to fill them with nonsense.

Whenever I see people getting banned from Reddit I always revel in the fact that I left on my own terms. I never go back there voluntarily since the API Epoch. Eat my shorts, Reddit.

21

Seriously. At least back then their Android app was basically unusable. I haven't tried it since, but suspect that because ads I'd probably hate it anyways. It was an unhealthy addiction.

4

Same here. I just found it appalling, the way users were, and are, being treated. Was getting some strong "livestock" vibes. And all the bots and brigades don't exactly help Reddit's cause.

2

Both for me. I got banned there, evaded the ban for years, then when things got shit I came on lemmy. My new account is still fine, I just prefer staying here.

1

I left when the great conservatisation started before the API issues. When they basically wanted more conservative moderators in "liberal" places for fair and balanced approach. When people were being banned left and right for speaking out against the regime or telling LGBT people to arm up.

6

now reddit wants to force people to login, after banning so much. to feed AI slop for google and OPEN AI. OPEN AI started to use reddit less and less, so that caused a huge traffic to fall.

Leaving Reddit is like leaving an abusive relationship (kinda: stick with me on this)

  1. Reddit makes the rules and tells you what you can and can't say
  2. Reddit won't allow you to speak about controversial topics that could be upsetting to it's advertisers (i.e. Israel)
  3. Reddit mods can ban you for no reason
  4. Appealing to "authorities" (Reddit, when mods go crazy) does absolutely nothing
  5. It hurts and is sad to leave
  6. It gets better once you leave
  7. You look back a while later and think, wow it is so much better now you've left.
18
lemmy.world

The first four of those also apply to Lemmy too though. Depending on the instance, Lemmy mods are even worse than Reddit mods. And there is no “authority” to appeal to here either. The only difference is that there aren’t advertisers that they’re trying to appease, it’s just whatever neckbeard you pissed off that will have a vendetta against you.

5

reddits filtering, ai moderation is far worst than LEMMY. on lemmy you can avoid the problmatic instances, or people by blocking them. reddit is very pervasive.

1

The other thing that makes it feel like an abusive relationship is how huge it feels. How grand it seems, and how you just can't imagine life without it. I'm still healing from when I recently got sitewide banned for some alleged ban evasion bullshit

And... as someone who's actually been in abusive relationships, I can attest to your analogy

Only difference is, I still hope to get back in, and am waiting on my second appeal. It's not a perfect comparison because it still has its occasional good uses, but still I agree

What was the likely innocuous comment that caught you a ban? I got IP banned for asking when they're going to launch Marjorie Taylor Greene into the sun. Apparently that was "promoting violence".

13
lemmy.zip

Someone was complaining that in their country, everything requires identity verification under the guise of "age verification." I mentioned the existence of "VPN Gate"—a completely open-source, non-profit, educational VPN project that uses residential IPs rather than standard VPN IPs. My account was likely flagged as spam.

9

Oh yeah they make a lot of money from sponsored posts, can’t let people mention products and services without paying

2

That's ridiculous. Reddit went to shit fast when they stopped letting you use 3rd party apps.

4
bedwyrreply
piefed.ca

I got a violation, (never banned yet but went through maybe 10 accounts in 3 years of use,) one of the later ones was for suggesting Musk should ride his spaceships up into orbit.

Apparently it's threatening violence. Appeal denied.

5

So many pearl-clutching bootlickers. You never said you would personally strap him to his own rocket. That's also not violence either. Not anyone's fault if he can't breathe in space.

5

Today I stopped using Bluesky because they suspended my account for suspicious activity. I'm sure it's because I use a VPN to bypass age verification. Oh well. Mastodon and Lemmy it is.

If it keeps happening, search your ip on the internet blacklits, just search that and click on the site and they will do it for you, there are several dozens.

After multiple emails and other sign ups were immediately frozen, leaving me unable to get an email even, I checked and found I was on one, all I did was read the news and comment on social media, and work stuff. I think Israel is putting people on there that piss them off.

5
lemmy.dbzer0.com

That might be it then. I'm definitely outspoken about Israel. Thanks. I think I'll just stay off. Been wanting to quit it anyway and just stick with fediverse.

6

Similar thing happened to me. It was a near 20 year old account. Somehow it got hacked and banned. for my history I felt a sense of loss because I realized I wanted to be able to look back and see my old posts and comments. I appealed with no answer, it's like appealing into the void.

I still had the addiction to seeing content and reading comments, seeing something always new. But I slowly started coming around to fediverse. Not all at once, I created a new reddit account just to see the content. It pissed me off they gated the content to people logged in, pissed me off they keep trying to push you to use the app, but I eventually gave in because of my content addiction to seeing that new dopamine drip feed.

The final straw was when I started noticing a more hostile commenting environment. I would comment something innocuous, but then I would get people arguing with me on fairly un controversial comments. I would notice they would be accounts with private histories less than a year old. Some would have only fans- like ads in their profile.

I also noticed a vast uptick in rightwing trolling and right leaning comments. These accounts all seemed suspect. Reddit had always been a left wing space. I really think a lot of the money being funneled into these midterms is being used for troll farms and bot farms to astroturf narratives on social media platforms. That was the last straw. I was arguing with people who were probably bots on reddit, giving reddit the engagement they want and I had enough.

It really is an addiction, I had to cut it off but I still try to pull up reddit sometimes when i'm bored. But I think fediverse is really going to be the future and we have to keep getting people to gradually come here.

10

Congratulations leaving that trash fire. I went back a couple times out of curiosity and man did I regret it. It's way worse than it was in 2019 which was my peak reddit usage time.

6

Lmfao, that’s me here every month. Nothing changes when you switch groups of douche bags. Don’t feel bad, I lost my Reddit account when I called out an online stalker in the open. Apparently my words were “uncivil”

The last straw for me was when RedReader stopped working

4
bedwyrreply
piefed.ca

Plus when reveddit stopped working, at least with that I could see what comments were being auto removed by mods or admin without notice. And other details. That was in 2024 I think.

1

RedReader stopped working this summer. It's amazing that it kept going even after the API restrictions, I think it's because Redlib uses reverse engineered API calls from the official app

3
lemmy.zip

So you didn't so much stop as much as you were stopped.

2
piefed.zip

I don't understand the flex in posts like this, you didn't stop using Reddit, you were told to leave.

Getting kicked out of the Nazi bar is okay... but why were you frequenting that bar to begin with?

-1

It's not a flex. It's sharing information in hopes it resonates with other people. The same motivation behind this derisive comment, only not rude.
