Siren and Siren 2

I've tried to find Japanese horror games from the PS2 era that has this same feel, but I can't :(

Some quick facts:

The VAs for Siren were British, so every Japanese person had a posh accent and didn't pronounce Japanese words so well

Siren 2's main setting, Yamijima Island, was inspired by an actual Japanese Island, Hashima island. The Island was an industrial hub for coal mining and was known for forced labor involving Korean and Chinese slaves.

Both games used facial scans from multiple angles to create the uncanny, and horrifying, expressions of the various protagonists and enemies

JGSDF Intelligence Unit Secretly Profiled Thousands of Citizens on ‘Patriotism’ and Ideology

"According to documents obtained by the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, in addition to the names and biographies of the university professors surveyed, "emotions toward Japan," "emotions toward the Self-Defense Forces," and "ideas and beliefs" were compiled in detail in a report called "Personal BSD (Basic Source Data)," and at least several thousand people were stored within the Asaka Garrison It appears to be shared. One former member said, "We have not given consent to the target group." He testified that the purpose and legal basis for the activities had never been demonstrated within the unit.""

"The Ministry of Defense said, "We are not aware of the collection of personal information of citizens that is the basis for (Kumabi's) interviews. "It will take time to verify the facts, but we would like to take some kind of action," he said."

Another "democracy" that's closer to being like an authoritarian hellhole than the countries they criticize.

The future of oil prices may depend on China | CNN Business

They attributed the contradiction largely to China as “the invisible hand that is rebalancing the market,” due to its ability to curb oil imports by about 3 million barrels per day – an amount nearly equal to Japan’s total crude demand.

China was able to significantly pare down consumption for several reasons. Before the war, China was building back-up crude inventories, aided by cheap deliveries of sanctioned oil from Russia and Iran

By cutting down on imports, relying on vast stockpiles and utilizing more clean energy, China has been able to cushion the impact of higher prices at home, if not alleviate it completely.

So...Trump went to war with Iran and China wins? Why is he so f***ing stupid? Also, can we just go full hog into renewable energy investment and side line naysayers? It's literally becoming a national security issue at this point.

Body of missing Auburn University student found in Japan

The Higginbotham family previously said that the 20-year-old went missing after an argument over artificial intelligence during a family trip and feared he could have been “emotionally distressed.”

His mother said that her son was last known to have entered the mountainous forest area near Yamashina, Kyoto, where there are water sources but limited food.

So what happened?

I don't think he decided to end it all over AI and his mothers use of ChatGPT. Makes more sense that he slipped and either broke something or fell in a body of water and drowned.

Either way, horrible way to go at such a young age.

Reddit's CEO calls his company 'the fuel' for artificial intelligence

“There’s no artificial intelligence without actual intelligence,” he said on “Mad Money.” “The knowledge has to come from somewhere, and Reddit is one of the primary sources for that sort of information that AI’s crave, but also that people crave.”

Reddit is one of the primary sources for that sort of information that AI’s crave

Now it all makes sense.

AI was trained on humans that don't know how to act like humans, so AI has like a double dose of uncanny valley to it.

That and it makes sense why AI uses so many emojis, cheesy one liners, and can a massive fence sitter. God forbid we get an LLM that can give a constructive, well thought out opinion.

Just like a typical Redditor, gotta get them stars and updoots.

Manga Artist Loses Entire Google Account After AI Flags His Own Artwork on Drive — Glitchwire

This is the fundamental flaw in cloud moderation: Google scans your files for "policy violations." The system cannot distinguish between an artist archiving their own legally published work and someone uploading prohibited material. When the consequences include losing access to email, documents, calendars, and every service linked to that account, the cost of a false positive becomes catastrophic.

Something similar happened to a man who had photos of his own children on his Google Drive. They alerted to police due to possible CSAM. Got the guy wrapped up in a couple months of legal trouble.

People really need to learn how bad cloud storage is and why hosting locally is crucial for security and your own safety.

Host locally. Encrypt. Don't trust any company with storing your sensitive files.

Japan’s izakaya pubs closing at record pace, failing to attract foreign tourists

Blame tourist for all your countries problems

Refuse tourist into many Izakayas for decades

Fail to capture the tourist market for decades

Prices rise and force out much of the native population

Try to pivot to the same tourist you told to GTFO and never marketed to

??????

FORECLOSURE!

Literal pottery.

Not a smart marketing decision to gatekeep Izakayas from people with money. Many tourist out earn even the most skilled of salarymen by a wide margin. Not marketing to this group has been a massive mistake, foolish.

Many foreign entrepreneurs desperate as Japan tightens 'business manager' visa rules - The Mainichi

Chinese nationals are among those increasingly seeking to move to Japan. In some cases, parents hoping to accompany children studying in Japan set up businesses and come to the country on business manager visas. One administrative scrivener who helps Chinese clients obtain and renew their residency status said, "While there are people who seriously run businesses, some obtain residence status as managers using business plans and corporate registrations with no real substance." According to him, there are also cases in which people create fictitious transactions among acquaintances to show the business performance needed for renewal, or obtain residence status using a dummy company and work at a different company instead.

Stop moving to Japan and trying to live there.

The country has been dying for decades, and is far behind China and America. They've been deceiving people for decades that they're some super power, or ahead of the curb in tech.

This was true during the 80s and 90s, but not now. Japan has a dying population, a retirement fund that is quickly running out, a robotics sector that values demonstrations over actually useful products (China has cornered the market on a generalized, cheap, easy to produce robot useful for general labor and simple tasks), and a government that is placing the blame all on immigrants.

They have always had a problem with foreigners, it's why they committed some of the worst massacres and genocides of the Chinese, Filipinos, Malays, and other SEA and Asian people. They hate you, don't let Anime or goon bait brain wash you into thinking overwise.

Indonesian police probe Japanese social media posts boasting of child prostitution - TokyoReporter

In its official notice, the Japanese Embassy urged citizens to strictly adhere to local laws, highlighting that in Indonesia, sexual intercourse with a minor can result in severe rape charges, regardless of whether there was consent.

I mean, really? You need to be reminded to not have sex with minors? Not only that, but you post evidence online? Hope they all get caught and receive Indonesian treatment.

A community for ‘Whites only’ in Arkansas sued for discrimination | CNN

Michelle Walker, who is of Jewish ancestry, says the organization that runs the community, Return to the Land, discriminated against her by denying her the opportunity to buy land based on race and religion. Walker is married to a Black man and has biracial children, her lawsuit says. She’s seeking unspecified damages, including punitive damages.

I'm dead, lol. This is rage baiting on another level. At least she got a lawsuit out of it.

Foreign business owners face frantic scramble to leave Japan amid tighter visa rules

The PM of Japan is a legit idiot. Pushing out foreigners that contributed to the country, followed the rules, and stayed out of trouble is a big brain, 4D chess moment.

This is why countries like China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia are much better options for getting into Asia and settling down with a family. This anti-immigrant nonsense isn't going to end well.

Little Mushroom: Manhua about a mushroom disguised as a dude

I've just started reading manhua and it's been a strange ride. There's a lot of Chinese culture in the comics and it can be confusing sometimes if you're unfamiliar with it.

This one is just plain weird, I don't think it's trying to make some grand point or social commentary. It's just a comic about a mushroom dude.

The horror stuff is pretty good though. Scream Queen is okay and Cheating Men Must Die reminds me of Hong Kong for some reason :/
