because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things

Everyone understands that. That's not a question.

All this will do is provide something inside these terror networks to play over and over and over to their recent converts. A public execution of these radical attacks only serves to encourage more of the exact same thing. There's no part of it that's discouraging.

These terror networks will literally play it over and over again. They will tell their people. "Hasan killed 13 of them and he is now dead and in heaven for his actions. The US will make you all martyrs and your kin will know your acts."

Like Hegseth has literally no clue who he is dealing with. The people who he acts like this will discourage, all it will do is make happier to jump at the chance to have the same thing happen to them. He's going to make the best recruitment tool for these terror organizations.

They're all definitely stupider than shit, but idk if they'd care even if they did understand. They want more terrorist attacks because they think that will get them reelected and they pretty obviously don't give a crap about who gets hurt in their quest for power.

The FBI just manufactured, then heorically stopped a terror plot at the Mall of America the other day

The Trump admin wants terror plots right now, they feel it will help them in the midterms

5

They saw Netanyahu cancel elections after 10/7 and avoid the consequences that were coming his way.

1

Hegseth probably is. The people telling him what to do...they probably have some idea

7

You think they don’t want that? The more terror attacks on Americans the more they can push for the totalitarian police state to protect us.

It’s what Israel has been doing by funding Hamas and splintering Palestine.

31

Like Hegseth has literally no clue who he is dealing with. The people who he acts like this will discourage, all it will do is make happier to jump at the chance to have the same thing happen to them. He’s going to make the best recruitment tool for these terror organizations.

I don't think its accurate to say that Hegseth doesn't know what he is doing.

Making the execution public is on purpose, so the question is what purpose does it serve.

  1. The most obvious seems to be about ego, and being a "tough guy" Hegseth (and Trump) are obsessed with being seen as strong men, and they think a public execution makes them seem tough

  2. Terror, the next most obvious is that this is a part of the regimes ongoing terrorism campaign against Americans. Hegseth (and republicans in general) are telling people that they will find and execute anybody they think is an enemy.

"Speaking to Real America’s Voice, Hegseth made clear that the decision was deliberate. “We’re gonna make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” he said."

  1. Desensitization seems to be next. The constant ramping up of violence, and the political celebration of violence is a pretty deliberate attempt to make government run violence a normal part of life.

  2. Precedent is probably on this list. Now that the Regime can publicly execute people for terrorism, they can publicly execute anybody. They have already said that anybody who is against fascism is a terrorist, and they already have assaulted, imprisoned and killed people for it. Now they are setting a precedent that they can do it legally.

  3. Pissing off Muslims and making more enemies is probably here too. The regime needs people to blame atrocities on, when Trump nukes Los Angeles, he is going to want to blame it on "extremists." It fuels his forever war, and gives him an unlimited supply of support from people that don't look too hard. This seems to be rather low on the list, since the regime already lies about everything, and lying about muslim terrorists is probably easier than telling the truth about muslim terrorists, but anything to cloud the waters is probably a bonus.

20

All the guy wanted was to die a martyr. He said so at his sentencing. Not only is this not going to show serious consequences but encourage future terrorists like you pointed out.

That said, Hegseth would be all too happy to encourage more violence on US citizens if it means ramping up the security apparatus and eroding citizen rights. No better than Netanyahu allowing Oct 7th to be as murderous as possible.

16
lemmy.ca

They don't give a shit about Islamic terrorism. This is just another push of the Overton window.

If you think this will be the only live streamed execution, you're in for a bad time.

10

Honestly, there is much greater than a 0% chance that Hegseth didn't understand serious consequences until he himself was exposed to it, so he thinks everyone else needs that type of awakening.

6

100%. The guy didn't do it thinking he'd get away with it or the US military would give him a slap on the wrist at his court martial. He intentionally tried to get the death penalty.

No, he understands very well the fascist economy needs enemies. If you gave Petey-pie a button that cleanly deleted Islam from the planet, he'd never press it because he can't function without an opposing religious extreme...

For a sillier analogy, Batman and the Joker fight all the time but can't exist without each other.

Yeah, and he can't touch Saudi Arabia, being one of the largest purchasers of military equipment and in control of the Sunni mindset preventing the rest of the Muslim world from trying to intervene in the nakba.

Some fucking news anchor is in charge of shit.

5

During Trump's first term he spent hours on the phone every night getting 'advice' from Tucker Carlson and other Fox personalities, and it only went downhill from there.

At least during his first term there was usually at least one responsible adult around to tell him no. Now he's entirely surrounded himself with sycophants and bloodthirsty psychopaths chosen from the dumbest humanity had to offer.

If executions happen at all, yes, of course they're better done out of sight. What kind of person do you think would voluntarily watch those, and what would that do?

Obviously executions should not be happening at all.

4

If the state is executing people its citizens should be forced to watch: this is your will; this is what you voted for. Dumb, deaf and blind: Americans, "please do it off stage I'm watching TV here! No I didn't vote!"

It's wild that voting isn't mandatory there.

Let me see how many other authoritarian dictatorships do public executions: Iran, North Korea, Yemen, but none of them broadcast them in live streaming. The only other occurrence of a live streamed execution was with the ISIS

54

If the US decides to livestream the execution, they will, of course, not do anything as crass as what ISIS did and put it in dark web or something.

No, they're going to be classy people, and put it on pay per view! With crypto shitcoin rugpull sponsorship. That's what we expect from the Trump administration at this point as a bare minimum. They will sink even lower in manners that are hard to predict, however.

This is nothing short of a clear threat to anyone that stands in opposition of the MAGA dictatorship. However, it won’t be the deterrent that they think it will be.

They think this will put all the liberals in line for fear of this happening to them, but it really will just fire everyone up to stand against their fascist shit even more.

And it also serves as a clear example that we are not doing enough to stop this criminal organization and need to step it up to their level- VERY soon.

Also, please, you are not a bigger victim of American fascism than the people living under it's boot.

1

That's a text book false dichotomy. "Oh we couldn't possibly do anything at all because we would need a violent revolution which would be awful".

Also, I said "in some ways it's worse". We are not living under the boot of fascism, yet we have to bear the consequences despite having no opportunity to influence the outcome.

1
lemmy.ca

Literally all it would take for me to give Americans even an ounce of respect would be for them to make even the most modest effort to live up to the national mythology they’ve spent the better part of a century congratulating themselves for and belligerently forcing down everyone else’s throats.

No, I don’t hold other countries to the same standard, because they haven’t spent generations lecturing the rest of the world about their unparalleled courage, their moral superiority, and their supposedly instinctive resistance to fascism. They made fighting for freedom the centerpiece of their national identity. They demanded admiration for it. They treated any failure to provide that admiration as an insult. And now, when history finally asks them to demonstrate a fraction of the courage they’ve spent eighty years taking credit for, the pants-pissing cowards decide they’re helpless little babies and HOW DARE YOU, FOREIGNER?

This is a discussion forum, of course they're sharing thoughts, but they're also sharing willingness to fight should there be enough fighters. Dismissing that as "keyboard warrior" is cowardice. You could communicate your willingness to fight, but all the likes of you communicate is blaming one person and willingness to return things to "normal", where normal is continuing to shift right and sacrifice the next group of vulnerable people.

The system needs ripping out, a revolution is needed, and electing a democrat isn't the solution to anything.

Wait… you think the SIZE of the protest matters one bit? When the thing you’re opposing gets WORSE following your protest?

Also, let’s call it what it was. It was a parade. And yes, it was very big and cute.

Unfortunately for white liberals in the US, protesting isn’t an end in itself unless you’re just using it as a way to telegraph that you’re “on the right side.”

Outcomes matter- and the only outcome of the once-every-four-months, “scheduled in advance,” “peaceful” No Kings parade was to communicate to MAGA that they are free to continue doing what they’re doing because their opposition is easily ignored and absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

The Nationalists were actually losing until Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany helped them. The left and liberals on the Republican side lost because they were not given aid by any outside institutions (well, the leftist in-fighting did not help much either).

Above and beyond the fact that it is illegal as fuck on the federal level and in many states, armed forces such as ICE cannot possibly show up at all early voting sites and ballot drop boxes and local election offices -- or even a significant number of them -- and they sure as fuck can't do it for four weeks running. There are just too many of them, and too many of us.

So vote now. And check your voting status first via your local state election office and make sure you're still on the rolls.

More fool me! Here I was thinking nothing that America’s Trump administration could do or say, no matter how politically and morally bankrupt, no matter how venal or violent, was capable of shocking me any longer. Then I woke to today’s news that one of the Trump cabinet’s bigger boofheads – the uber Christian nationalist, crusader-fantasist and “secretary of war” Pete Hegseth had announced that America would have a public firing squad execution of murderer Nidal Hasan. Reckless global militarisation including a threat at the UN to annihilate Iran, a litany of sexual misconduct allegations against the commander in chief, claims of blatant presidential corruption … they have all ceased to surprise and shock us, so inured has the world become to Donald Trump’s monstrous narcissism and maladministration. But now we have execution TV. Tune in to the livestream on Thursday 3 December to watch a military firing squad shoot the life out of Hasan, the former army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at a US army base in 2009.State-sanctioned killing as entertainment! Yes, the world’s supposedly greatest (or formerly greatest) democracy has arrived at an horrific new moral nadir. The fact that America remains Australia and the west’s most relied-upon and trusted ally despite the global wrecking ball the second Trump administration has proved to be, was already cause for deep concern. But being so closely allied to a country that now wants to turn the execution of a human being – no matter what their crimes – into a live entertainment event, promises to redefine depravity. Given that American states continue to execute so many convicted criminals, where might the United States ultimately draw the line? No doubt the ilk of Hegseth in American society – and elsewhere – will count down the days until they can tune in to the live coverage of Hasan’s execution in droves. Might the audience cry out for more – for livestream cameras in the death chambers across the land of the free? How would this populist administration respond? If you think it is a fanciful question, consider how far American governance and presidential values have slid in the moral murk in the past two years alone. Meanwhile, it is hard to contemplate a more audacious appeal to American society’s darker angels than this looming entertainment event. But there we are. We have arrived. Pass the popcorn, Don, and Pete! It would be heartening today to hear political leaders the world over condemn Hegseth and Trump’s planned introduction of Ghoul TV. But let us please start in Australia, where federal governments have for a long-time opposed capital punishment – let alone turning it into a public spectacle. Will the prime minister and his senior ministers stand up and condemn without qualification this depraved plan for America to livestream an execution? What about the leaders of other political parties here, some of whom have, after all, supported capital punishment? We are waiting. Meanwhile, how much further into the moral quagmire must America wallow before Australia rethinks its craven military dependence on Washington – not least via the reckless shackling of our strategic reliance to the US via the $368bn (and counting) Aukus submarine deal? Announcing America’s decision to turn killing into a form of entertainment, Hegseth said: “It was a radical Islamist attack in uniform inside the ranks, and so he’s going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be, and we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand there’s serious consequences for these types of things.” America’s defence department later confirmed the execution would be livestreamed. This represents a significant lurch in the US from civilisation towards savagery. You cannot choose your family. But you can choose your friends and allies. And you can also tell them firmly when they have careened off the ethical rails. Actions speak louder than words. And this planned livestreamed execution says it all about what is happening in America today, opening the window ever wider on the Trump administration’s moral vacuity and its paucity of human decency. • Paul Daley is a Guardian Australia columnist

The pro-life party at it again. 🙄

I hope that whoever takes one for the team and sees the execution will screen record it and edit it to make Pigsbreath look even more stupid.

12

Disgusting pig of a man. They're probably going to have betting wagers to see how fast this guy dies.

11

So, I know the US army now bans trannys, fatys, beardos, weirdos, which seems like a good start.

BUT, what about short dick guys? Would a serious army really allows it? And, let's say those who grew up with 2 moms, or without a dad for example. Do Americans wants their enemy to go "Haha, American soldiers are so lame even their dad didn't love them haha." . How about the women, the lazy Blacks and Hispanics, people who are poor, guys who are less than 6 feet tall, dudes that didn't had sex with at least 50 women, any type of minorities, etc.? Is the strongest country in the world really gonna allow this type of pussys to join it's army? If Hegseth is serious is gonna ban all these losers and only allows whiten blonde conservatives with a huge dick and a six figure paycheck to join the force, otherwise it will be called the farce.

Republicans come in three types. Those motivated by crazy neoliberal ideology based on the sociopathic views of Ayn Rand (“The virtue of selfishness”) Hayek and Friedman. Both social Darwinists who thought that the markets should decide everything. Xenophobic, usually homophobic, and some overtly racist. Some just want to enrich themselves at the expense of others, seek attention, and thirdly,a hate fuelled repugnant mixture of both. Inept, ignorant, incompetent, stupid, perverted, or deranged.

This neo tech fascism has little in common with conservatism, other than conservatives who can't differentiate of course.

As someone who's been following US politics from the outside for about 20 years now, it's actually very onbrand for them. This is just Vietnam all over again, another ill thought out conflict, inflicted on the population without a vote without discussion, with the expectation that the population will just go along with it, and the oppression of any voices against it (including other politicians in their own party).

The only differences is the thin veneer of validity has gone. They're not even pretending that they're fighting the good fight anymore. This time they are the oppressors, they've gone full mask off.

“I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016 and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic, morally vacant, and psychologically mangled he is. I do not wonder anymore. He won for that exact reason. He was not a candidate. He was a mirror. If you were a racist, you found your guy. If you were a misogynist, you found your guy. If money was your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart was armoured shut, you found your guy. If you mocked disabled people, you found your guy. If you hated intelligent people, you found your guy. If you were a rapist, you found your guy. If you enjoyed golden showers with Russian sex workers, you found your guy. If you had done absolutely nothing to confront your emotional wreckage, you found your guy. If you were a serial cheater, you found your guy. If you were a perpetual bankrupt, you found your guy. If you stiffed honest workers, you found your guy. If you were a conman, you found your guy. If you mocked people’s appearances, you found your guy. If you longed for a toxic Daddy, you found your guy. If you were dissociated and disembodied, you found your guy. If you were unconscionable in every economic dealing, you found your guy. If you lied as naturally as breathing, you found your guy. If you had never eaten a green vegetable, you found your guy. If you were a white supremacist, you found your guy. If your ego contained a hole so large not even the presidency could fill it, you found your guy. If you were a sociopath who cared not one molecule about other humans, you found your guy. If he had only two of these traits, he never would have won. He won because he had hundreds of them, and millions of people recognized themselves in at least one. This has never been about Trump. It has always been about the people who finally had their worst instincts validated. Trump did not create the cruelty, he licensed it. He handed out permission slips for hate. He is merely a symptom of a far deeper disease: collective toxicity. If there is one sentence that explains Trump’s power, it is this: “He says the things I’m thinking.” That is the part that should chill the spine. Who knew that tens of millions of Americans were thinking such unconscionable things about their fellow citizens? Who knew how many white men felt so threatened by women and challenged by minorities that they were ready to torch democracy to feel big again? Who knew that after decades of apparent progress on race and gender, so many people were living in seething resentment, waiting for a demagogue to legitimize their worst selves and convert their bitterness into political power? We were living in a fool’s paradise. We aren’t anymore." — Michael Jochum

Yep. All of this. In just about every conversation about conservatives, it seems someone raises the spectre of what conservatism is really supposed to be about.

I'm not sure it's all that useful to really delineate between what conservatives do and this theoretical version of conservative that largely seems to live in the minds of people like David Brooks.

Even in one of the most canonical examples of the "true" conservative - William F. Buckley, the conservative's conservative - we quickly see how that kind of thing is deflated - he's often thrown out there as some kind of standard-bearer who "stood up" to things like the Birchers (but then still had backchannels to them). He not only hurled a gay slur, but threatened physical violence on the air. And the book that put him on the map is the same kind of whining invective we see today from the right about how the universities are indoctrinating the children. And he wrote it 75 years ago.

And Hegseth, the pussy, can go fuck a goat, like he's want wont to do.

10

Thank you for the correction! I believe at some point in my life, I knew this, but definitely had a massive brain fart when writing my comment. Much appreciated!

2

That's a very good point. I should leave the goats out of this. Poor things have been through enough.

2

This is really stupid because desensitizing the public to violence in such a way doesn't typically end well for those in charge, historically speaking.... It's evident thinking isn't their strong suit...

10

I would definitely watch a televised firing squad execution if it were any of the fascists in this administration against the wall, actually.

Articles of Impeachment should be drawn up for Hegseth and Trump immediately. This is beyond unacceptable.

9

This shit is Indoctrination 101 and how people get radicalized. Isis and other terrorist groups have livestreamed their own executions too, and for good reason. There is zero possibility Kegseth is not using this event for exactly this reason. He wants MORE terrorists and more martyrs, not fewer.

Here's the shooter's Wikipedia page for anyone not familiar. Like another commenter said, it's sad.

This is a horrible decision, but I think it might bring some good.

Publicizing the execution of the asshat will only create propaganda for Islamic extremists. They will praise and celebrate him as a martyr. And if he shouts something in Arabic just before he's shot or uses his last words to endorse Islamic extremism this will only get worse.

At the same time, the American people have become out of touch. We live in what's objectively one of the safest societies humanity has ever created. Our news media hides anything bloody, even our 'violent bloody movies' are usually more cartoonish than realistic. And so a large majority of Americans go their lives without any exposure to real violence.

Thus we sit in our safe little ivory towers and debate things like capital punishment and military action as abstract, academic concepts with no real visceral understanding of their reality. Very very very few Americans have ever witnessed another human die.

My point is- I think we've done ourselves a disservice. And I think/hope that actually seeing executions performed might make the American people decide this isn't what we need in our society.

My one concern though is that we've gone too far down the rabbit hole- that the American people will actually like this and it will become a spectacle, that the public will gather a taste for blood. That would be worse.

7

Publicizing the execution of the asshat will only create propaganda for Islamic extremists. They will praise and celebrate him as a martyr. And if he shouts something in Arabic just before he’s shot or uses his last words to endorse Islamic extremism this will only get worse.

Nobody in the middle east even knows who Nidal Hasan is nor will they even get mad about his execution.

What they will do however is skim another pathetic and bizarre story in the news about America. The same people who have been lecturing (and bombing, massacring, shooting, raping them as well) them for decades about how backward and extremist their Islamic cultures are.

Not even the current mass murders being committed by the US can spawn a single drop more of anti-American extremism because the hatred is already saturated. They can't hate America any more than they already do, but mostly: nobody in the middle east sees the US as a serious threat to their nations, religion or way of life any more and Iran, as many have long predicted, will be the region's new hegemon.

All they have to do is wait for it to die and then it will be little more than a painful memory.

8

Our economy is in shambles, our government is corrupt as fuck; generally the only things you can do to placate the plebs in these sorts of situations is to give them bread and circuses, (entertainment.) This is mean to pacify the base, and to intimidate anyone that isn't part of the base.

5

Very very very few Americans have ever witnessed another human die.

On sites like Watch People Die, they do it all the time. That's the thing about this execution. The only people who will be watching it will be the people who are subscribed to /h/execution. It's almost like Hegseth is going for the ultimate Internet clout. I'm curious what his username is there.

4

I've worked in places before where you had to deal with human bodies being transported and the number of people who couldn't even handle knowing there was a dead body IN A BOX nearby was shocking. Like the thing is hermetically fucking sealed dude. Relax.

1

There are reason why public execution is bad idea and abolished for good, it waste of time and ultimately just propaganda tools to incite fear for masses, until that fear turn to rage, the rest is history.

7

Considering that chemical companies have boycotted execution systems for some time now it would supporise me if it was supported by Meta, Google or Amazon (more specifically there staff). However if they want to maintain there tax brakes they may not have an option.

I could see it being supported in the back end and have some no name unlisted video where you can only get to it directly.

3

The question is not if, but whether or not they would air with toddlers and tiara orgy edition. Which you know they will push for as an 'anti pedo' show to show people what to look out for, you see.

2

Hey... Next step, why not live stream and monetize the next mass shooting at school?

Doing evil for doing evil thing... You know a little bit more. Nobody will mind.

After that... When everybody be used to this shootertainment... Why not live stream the primary school's one?!

Not a capital punishment fan but if it were me I'd much prefer this to this depressing lethal injection nonsense. And yeah, I'd want an audience to. Barbaric to judge anyone to death but if you're going to do that at least give them some choices re the method.

I mean, the optics of that would be utterly devastating. They lack so much self awareness, similar to some other historical political parties which shall remain unnamed.

Who’s going to provide the stream? Any advertisers left with some decency? Surely some will pull out. It’ll be hard to keep up the stream if it’s not an established service. I hope it gets DDOSed to high hell.

Let me give clarity, not all Republicans are Christians, and not all Christians are Republican!

I don't consider myself a believer or practice religion anymore, but dude, you're feeding stereotypes so hard, it's offensive and I'm not either of the above!

It's kind of pitiful when you're part of the problem, adding fuel to the fire of divide! It's not left vs right, is us vs the ultra wealthy! If they disappear, the rest of us thrive!

But the reason all the dems bitch about fumbling elections and not getting their shit together is because they're also owned by fucking billionaires. It's a little tug on either direction, and nobody wins long term.

Wake up, bro! Billionaire class owns us!

But not all Republicans are Christians, nor shitty

2

I'd be happy as ever if he did run or win. Those were the cards dealt, unfortunately, because the billionaires knew they could manipulate him.

Nearly half the country considers themselves independent, or at least not Democrat or Republican. So there's a lot more "blame" than just die hard Republicans... If you're playing that game. Three are also a ton of people over 65 who only vote Republican, because "less taxes and less gov overreach or involvement" because that's what's been preached for so long.

Again, if so many shitting on me realized the manipulation that pits left vs right instead of getting angry at the billionaires class, controlling both sides, we could overthrow the 2 party system, elect someone actually fresh and uncontrolled, and start to fix this place, starting with executive orders on wealth taxes and undoing all the damage from all of Trump. That's the only way to move forward. Actually.

0

Hegseth is using religion to relate to people IMO. He doesn't give a shit, nor believe in any religion. Pulling on heartstrings or trying to influence through propaganda. Nothing new. Not all "Christians" should get a bad rep from a few bad eggs. Same goes for anyone left or progressive. There are bad eggs everywhere, not everyone buys into the bullshit.

I know plenty of reputable and humble Christians. Of you think of all the bad shit you see on TV, yes, they're brought to light, but so many other people who are "religious" try to lead better lives, set examples, donate time or money. No, you don't need religion to be a better person, but I know plenty of people who uses it like a sort of meditation. A break from life, a chance to hear a good message about servitude, etc.

Not every "ChRiStIaN" is going to be a self-righteous asshole or think they're better or smarter than everyone. They do exist.

As for Republicans, I know plenty who fucking hate Trump, despise him. Both elections. Voted blue. They "lean" Republican but are more centric. But you're stuck "choosing sides" more often than not, and that's now by design.
