US supreme court allows Trump administration to strip Haitians and Syrians of protected status

In another boost to Donald Trump’s unprecedented hardline crackdown on immigrants, including many who have lived legally in the US for years, the court issued a 6-3 ruling. That was powered by its conservative-leaning majority, overturning decisions by federal judges in New York and Washington DC that had halted the administration’s actions terminating TPS for more than 350,000 people from Haiti and 6,100 from Syria.

The court’s three liberal-leaning justices disagreed with the opinion. It leaves Haitians and Syrians in the US on TPS vulnerable to deportation even if they have applications for other forms of immigration status in progress.

The state department currently warns against traveling to either Haiti or Syria, citing widespread violence, crime, terrorism and kidnapping.

All countries with a designation allowing TPS in the US are now considered under threat as the ruling will embolden the US president to strip other places of their status, no matter how risky it would be for immigrants to return there.

'I'm not going to be bullied': Trump gets in to shouting match with Republican senator over Iran war as questions grow over peace deal

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jun 24) reportedly got into a heated shouting match with Republican Senator Bill Cassidy during a closed-door meeting with GOP lawmakers. ...

...

"I stood and said, 'You have not told the American people what's going on. It was supposed to last four weeks; it's lasted four months. Our original objectives have not been achieved, and I want to know what's going on,'" Cassidy said.

According to CNN, Trump interrupted Cassidy repeatedly, ordered him to sit down and at one point called him a "lunatic." Cassidy reportedly refused to back down, raising his own voice during the exchange.

"I didn't care to be interrupted," Cassidy said. "I felt like I was trying to get answers for the American people, and I'm not going to be bullied when I'm trying to get answers."

And, in a follow up story from later this same day, he was in fact bullied (arc)

Republican senators switched their votes on an Iran war powers resolution late Wednesday, hours after a fractious meeting that included a shouting match with President Donald Trump over their opposition to the conflict.

Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., had previously voted to progress the resolution giving Congress the ability to halt the war.

But after a contentious closed-door lunch Wednesday, in which Cassidy said he had “lost my temper” and Trump said he raised his voice as well, Republicans held a late-night vote in which the two senators backed away from their support for the resolution.

Cassidy, the outgoing Louisiana senator, was given a private briefing before the vote at the White House that he said addressed “many of my concerns.”

He then returned to Capitol Hill to vote against the resolution that would have seen Congress direct Trump “to remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force.”

Is AI 'one big bubble'? Behind the tech sell-off

A wave of selling in tech stocks is starting to reflect doubts over whether the spending boom on artificial intelligence is worth it.

The best-known AI-related tech stocks, Nvidia and Google-parent Alphabet, were down for a second day in a row.

Among the biggest losers on Tuesday, however, was chipmaker Micron Technology, whose shares plummeted over 13%. These sell-offs sent the tech-heavy Nasdaq index down over 2%.

Mamdani challenges Democratic leaders ahead of primary elections: ‘The Democratic Party must change’

Not long ago, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was demonized by leaders of both political parties. On Thursday night, the 34-year-old democratic socialist was celebrated as a political force, the face of the region’s sports renaissance, even the leader of “Mamdanistan.”

In a rally with Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., that drew thousands to a Brooklyn theater, the emboldened mayor delivered a fiery message to Democratic leaders in Washington — and even those considering 2028 presidential bids — as he worked to elevate a slate of likeminded candidates in Tuesday’s New York primaries.

“People often ask me what I think of the state of the Democratic Party. This slate here today is our answer,” Mamdani declared. “The Democratic Party must change.”

“The party of the past will not be what leads us into the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone.”

He shared the stage with three congressional candidates, including two running against Democratic incumbents. All three identify, or have identified, as democratic socialists. They promised to “abolish ICE,” condemned the “genocide” in Israel and vowed to “tax the rich” if elected.

...

Mamdani endorsed political organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier over Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in New York’s 13th District, which includes parts of upper Manhattan and the Bronx.

Mamdani is also backing former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is running against incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th District. And in New York’s 7th, he’s supporting democratic socialist state Assembly Member Claire Valdez against outgoing Rep. Nydia Velazquez’s handpicked successor.

Anger Mounts in Senatobia Over Police Killing of 1-Year-Old Kohen Wiley

SENATOBIA, Miss.—People scattered in a Walmart parking lot on Tuesday as law enforcement officers, who were wearing gas masks and lined up under the store’s grocery-side entrance, unleashed tear gas on the crowd that had gathered to protest the police killing of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.

Two days earlier on June 14, the young Black child died after a Senatobia police officer fired into a moving car, killing him and injuring the driver. Officers, who had been responding to a call alleging that someone had tried to steal a box of diapers, claimed that the car was driving toward the officer when he fired—a claim that some witnesses have disputed.

U.S. District Court for Rhode Island raises possibility that ICE 'set up' judge for attack

Chief Judge John McConnell also issued a harshly critical letter to an assistant U.S. Attorney, but stopped short of formal disciplinary proceedings.

In May, the court appointed a special counsel to investigate the possibility of misconduct by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Bolan. Bolan admitted that he had not the judge all the necessary information before she released a man from ICE custody.

The man was wanted for homicide in the Dominican Republic, but prosecutors never disclosed that to Judge Melissa DuBose.

After the release of Bryan Rafael Gomez, the Department of Homeland Security issued a press release and social media posts condemning her as an activist judge. The press release remains active on the DHS website.

NJ judge who threatened to deport truant students should be removed, panel says

In a split opinion, a majority of the state Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct agreed that Britt J. Simon should be booted from the bench for bullying three students from Bound Brook and their parents “to harass and intimidate them into compliance.”

...

...the panel’s members heard recordings of Simon berating a boy from El Salvador as “a beggar, piece of garbage” and telling him he would report him to state child protective workers, who he said would alert ICE agents to take his mother.

“Your mother’s going to get deported. You are going to end your mother’s life,” he told the boy. “You’re spitting in the face of this country. Would you like me to spit in your face? Somebody’s giving you something and you’re spitting on it. You are disgusting.”

A week after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, he warned a 14-year-old boy from El Salvador: “Hey, there’s a new sheriff in town.”

“You’re illegal, you’re getting deported. You know a great place to find people to deport is? The courts. You’re bringing your mother in here because of your bad behavior. You’re not a U.S. citizen, either. You think I’m kidding? The ICE officials wait outside the door for people like you,” Simon said.

He told a girl he’d have her placed in a group home and ICE agents would come for her mother.

“You better not sleep. Don’t close your eyes. I’m not kidding you. You’ll have everything you own stolen. You will be beaten. Is that the kind of life you want? You want to go to a Newark group home? Why are you not going to school? Answer me. Answer,” he demanded.

Trump's name is gone from the Kennedy Center's facade, according to a top official at the arts venue

A tarp continued to hang over the scaffolding constructed for workers to remove Trump’s name from the building, making it impossible to immediately detect whether the only words remaining on its white marble portico are “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”

What You Need to Know About How Tear Gas Harms Kids

In city after city, the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has been met by protests and rallies from members of the local community opposed to the White House’s deportation policies. Federal agents from the Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have repeatedly attempted to break up and drive back these crowds through the use of airborne irritants like tear gas and pepper spray, which can cause an array of immediate reactions — from eye pain to shortness of breath to nausea and vomiting — intended to temporarily disable their targets.

DHS has defended its use of these weapons on crowds and said that it “does NOT target children,” but after reviewing news accounts, lawsuits and officer-worn body camera footage, as well as verifying incidents by interviewing more than 40 victims or witnesses, ProPublica recently identified more than six dozen instances in which children had been harmed by tear gas and pepper spray.

Lander acquitted of wrongdoing in ICE encounter weeks before congressional primary

A Manhattan federal judge on Thursday cleared former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander of charges he obstructed an elevator at a downtown immigration detention center last year, handing the congressional candidate a legal victory only three days before the start of early voting.

Magistrate Judge Henry Ricardo said he could not find any evidence of “actual obstruction” of an elevator at 26 Federal Plaza. “The government failed to prove its case,” Ricardo said from the bench following a day-long trial.

The acquittal comes as Lander, a progressive Democrat, challenges Rep. Dan Goldman to represent Lower Manhattan in Congress. The alleged offense was relatively minor, but the trial drew intense scrutiny, with observers spilling into an overflow room at the federal courthouse to watch the proceedings.

Lander has made his court-watching activities at 26 Federal Plaza a key part of his recent campaigns. A video depicting the first time he was arrested while accompanying a man to immigration court gave him a huge boost in last year’s mayoral primary, which he ultimately lost. Many rival mayoral candidates and activists rushed to Foley Square to support Lander and condemn ICE.

“I feel genuinely moved by the rule of law,” Lander said after Thursday's verdict. ”What a blessing to live in a country where if the government arrests you and charges you with something, you could count on the ability to go in and make the government prove its case.”

CIA officer arrested with gold bars accused of making up top secret program, sources say

David Rush has been accused of exploiting the spy agency’s elaborate secrecy precautions that strictly limit sensitive information around such top secret programs to only those who “need to know,” these people said.

Rush is accused of creating a sham government contract as part of the program, the sources said, and inviting two of his CIA colleagues to participate in helping run it, they said. One of those colleagues transferred millions of dollars to the invented program, the people familiar with the investigation said.

Because Rush claimed the project was an ultrasecret “special access program,” his co-workers would have been prohibited from speaking about it with other employees, the people familiar with the investigation said. They did not know whether the other employees were aware of the alleged scheme or were unwitting accomplices.

Hunger Strikers in Adelanto ICE Jail Moved to Solitary After Meeting Congressmen

Last Monday, California Reps. Judy Chu, Jimmy Gomez, and Pete Aguilar visited Adelanto Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Processing Center as the hunger strike in the immigration jail entered its second week. The Democrats met with three of the hunger strikers, who gave them a petition, signed by some 150 people inside the facility, speaking of inhumane conditions inside the jail and degrading treatment by staff. The Adelanto ICE jail is run by private prison company GEO Group.

The next day, GEO Group staff entered a unit “in riot gear holding pepper spray, tear gas canisters and zip ties,” and removed two of the people who had met with congressional staff the day before. And on Wednesday, they removed the third person, according to other detainees.
