Unironically, the Soviet Union. I've herd that anthem a thousand times as a joke, but you know, it kinda slaps.

Obviously I'm just talking about the arrangement and music because I've no idea what the lyrics mean.

It is used as the Russian anthem too, which is currently unfortunate because it's amazing.

I'm sure the lyrics are sane and not at all unhinged

The first version of lyrics was written after WWII and changed twice already. First to remove references to Stalin and then again to remove references to Soviet Union. All 3 versions were written by the same guy.

France fucks, any anthem about glorious dead and cunting monarchs in to the sun is immediately S tier.

Sincerely, F tier UK.

Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons !

(May impure blood
Water our furrows!)

Can't see anyone misinterpreting that.

Don't get me wrong, the Marseillaise slaps, but it does have some slighltly problematic aspects.

I'm a huge fan of O Canada. Always enjoyed catching hockey games where one of the Canadian teams came down and so I'd get to hear it. Also enjoyed seeing games up in Montreal and getting the Francophonian version.

The French lyrics are different too, not sure how many people outside of Canada even know that, sports fans aside! In Alberta schools since the 80's they've sung the middle part of the song in French even if the kids have no idea what they're saying 😅, here's English translation:

O Canada! Land of our ancestors,
Thy brow is wreathed with glorious flowers.
For thy arm knows how to carry the sword,
It knows how to carry the cross!
Thy history is an epic
Of the most brilliant exploits.
And thy valour, steeped in faith,
Will protect our homes and our rights.
Will protect our homes and our rights.

Unfortunately very Christian.

Land of our ancestors

Wow that’s disgusting to include in the anthem considering the genocide of indigenous peoples that Canada is founded on and continues to perpetuate.

4

It's barely a secret that's still the case yes. You can tell by the french public resistance to make the french lyrics more secular as well. People have tried. It's certainly embarrassing.

Fuck all the war songs, Slovenia's anthem is a drinking song called The Toast if I remember correctly.

21

The full song is 8 verses long and all of them are in the shape of a wine cup, and the seventh verse is our national anthem. The entire song mainly talks about drinking which mostly sums up Slovenia :D

And our anthem sings about peace among all nations not just ours which is rare I would say.

Brazil has a very complicated, beautiful and long national anthem. Its great and all but using such difficult words and being so long means most people here don't know the full song much less understand its meaning.

Funnily enough, I memorized and can sing the italian hymn because of my middle school, but can't sing the full national anthem from my own country

19

I am not sure they still do but back in the day at least some Brazilian text books used to have the national anthem on the back, thats how I learned the words.

4

I'm glad at least that it's secular and inclusive. At least, the modern lyrics are - the original are a cringe product of their time.

I vote we move to You're The Voice by John Farmham.

What's the matter babe, don't you feel young and free?

1

Ukraine's national anthem is definitely up there. Part of the reason is that it's writen by an actual songwriter instead of a poet, unlike the anthems of most western nations

France and the Netherlands have war songs for their national anthems that are pretty good.

I don't know about France, but the Dutch anthem is not only a war song, it actually makes a lot of fun of Spain. As that was the enemy in the war the song is about. Which is always lots of fun during soccer matches against spain

To the king of Spain I've granted A lifelong loyalty.

That sure is some astringent piss taking there, I'm sure the Spanish are incandescent.

1

Yeah that line meant ironically. The geuzen sang it while slaughtering Spanish troops

1

The reply in the Spanish anthem ir pretty scathing, though.

1

It was so good Russia couldn't invent any better and took the same music and a few lines

3

Mexico, hands down. If you grew up in San Diego and listens to cool radio, you heard this twice a day and it slaps!

9

Sometimes, as teenagers while partying and drunk af we suddenly got a national pride surge, and sang the national anthem at the top of our lungs. It's just so good. Also nothing unites us Mexicans more than singing it before a football match.

Shame the lyrics are all about war when we have all sorts of cool things here but what can you do. (They do ignite something deep within tho haha)

2

Fucking 91X. I spent a lot of time wondering why it do be like that. I listen to a lot of Internet radio.

1

It's not the best by a very big margin. But whenever I get up wasted after a night of partying and have a look at the mirror, I hear the anthem of long gone eastern Germany.

Auferstanden aus Ruinen Und der Zukunft zugewandt...

Risen from ruins And turned toward the future...

8

Unironically a better song that yhe current German anthem.

I was stationed in Japan with the US military between 2002-2005 and every evening at 5 PM, the Japanese and American national anthems would play on speakers across our base, signaling the end of the work day.

We were required to stop what we were doing and listen quietly and respectfully for both anthems. If we were outside, we'd have to stand at parade rest and face the nearest country flags we could see, or face toward the music if there were no flags visible nearby. When the American national anthem played, we had to snap to attention and salute for the entire song.

The Japanese national anthem is probably not my favorite ever national anthem, but I heard it every day for over 3 years and the hauntingly beautiful anthem has forever planted itself in my brain. It's so calm and smooth compared to the almost militaristic march of the American anthem.

5

I was going to mention Japan's as possibly one of the weirder ones. Length, composition, etc. are all just a bit odd when compared to at least other western countries' anthems.

I have vague memories of playing Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road (1990) as a kid.

My country of choice was solely based on liking one of the anthems, but sadly I do not remember which one. Was Australia or New Zealand am option? I feel like it was one of those.

EDIT: Upon doing some research (watching YouTube videos), I think it may have been New Zealand. Still not sure if that was available in my game, but that's still my final answer. Australia is pretty cool too, so you aussies and kiwies can fight it out amongst yourselves - Knowing you, you already are anyway.

You would think the Caribbean national anthems would be straight choonz.

But they all kept the colonizer anthems. Which suck.

Not even a marimba in sight.

5

I tried to find the Jamaican national anthem's dub cover.

Nothing but slop everywhere, or songs with that title and different lyrics.

i'll go with spain, since there's no lyrics

No lyrics? And what's Chan chan, chan chan chanchanchan charachanchan... etc. then?

1

Well, that was an experience. I now agree with your opinion - it captures the US better than anything else i've ever listened to.

2

[Refrain: Children's Choir]
Yom Kippur! Yom Kippur!
Self reflection and atonement
Yom Kippur, that's what for
Do all your shopping
At Wal-Mart!

Ironically, it's much more interesting than The Most Wanted Song. Maybe that's part of how we got into this mess.

1

Great battle hymn. It'd fit right in on the Iron Nest soundtrack

2

East germany and the EU.

Both make me hopeful for the future eventhough i know what is coming!

3

I get jealous every ANZAC day when they play the New Zealand national anthem. So good.

And they have their Mauri language right there too.

3

I’m thinking Isla Island and the new dictator dancing to Venus by Bananarama.

3

I don't have a specific favorite national anthem, but I will take this opportunity to recommend the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra's renditions of every national anthem (plus a few regional and historical ones), which was one of the main things that started my interest in national anthems. [Youtube] [Invidious]

A few countries have changed their national anthems since it's release, but it's mostly up to date.

The lyrics, Uruguay's one is pretty good.

I'm Danish so clearly I'm biased in saying this: Danish national anthem. Mainly because

  1. almost every Dane knows the lyrics (of at least the first verse)
  2. it's quite some chill lyrics about Danish nature and the people here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbUy6-1WCHE
1

National anthem of Denmark will for the foreseeable future be linked with xenophobia and nationalism for me, which seems quite high in Denmark. Puts a sour taste on it for sure, sadly.
