Yeah the fact that The Office UK is on here and not The IT Crowd just shows they included it due to proximity to The Office US and don't watch British TV.
I just started a rewatch tonight after having mentioned it here :) I loved the show and I think it's time to give it another go. I am surprised how much of the permanent cast is introduced in episode one.
The torture porn for Season 7 first episode. The show went from splatter / hack & slash to a breach of the psychological contract between film makers and the audience. Instead of cutting away for the ultra violence, they stayed fully on it, turning this franchise from a zombie splatter movie into sadistic torture porn, with the sadism directed at the unsuspecting viewers.
I was able to skip past one of those sections because it was telegraphed in the previous season's ending, but the next one was intentionally designed to catch the audience unaware and was ultra explicit. I did not want to see this and I never consented to this kind of sadistic fucked up shit to be broadcast onto my screen.
Fuck the makers of that franchise, fuck AMC and fuck everyone involved in that decision for all eternity.
Edit: Be grateful that you didn't have to watch that.
I felt like it was an overcorrection of the season 6 finale where they left it on that shitty cliffhanger of who died. So they were like “well you want answers, we’ll give ya answers!!!”
Luckily it seems they were punished for it in terms of ratings. I honestly felt abused after being exposed to that scene, without a warning to close my eyes or skip ahead.
It just quickly got old and repetitive, completely uninspired rehashing of the same problems and storylines. Season 1 is gold, 2 is decent, don't bother past that
I’m a ride or die for infinity train but you just can’t compare these two properties, bruv. Shadows doesn’t scratch the surface of the emotional depth of infinity train. And, while I had several lol moments with Infinity Train, it’s nothing in terms of comedy to Shadows.
Saying one is better than the other is nearing non sequitur territory.
These are just a couple examples in different categories. Anime fans immediately noticed that no anime made the list at all, despite 10 being in the IMDB top 100. Western animation fans might have seen that Bojack Horseman made the list, but Avatar didn't (or if the editor filtered for "adult animation", Rick and Morty (#22) didn't). There's really no excuse for these, there is no consistent rule that would exclude any of these shows. NYT readers must live in the dark timeline where fun is outlawed and Taskmaster was cancelled after one series.
Animation isn't respected in the snobby "film" crowd. These are the same sorts of people that refuse to take Citizen Kane out of the number 1 movie slot. If movies peaked in 1941, what's the point?
I started to think their list was implicitly live action-only, but then Bojack Horseman? This list is fully ad-hoc one person's perspective, no objectivity or consensus attempted.
Unironically. I'm sure Parks&Rec was a fun show, but did it fill convention centers around the world with hundreds of thousands fans? Did it kickstart the careers of animators, illustrators and musicians?
There's a couple more "children's cartoons" that I'd put in the top 100 over some high-popularity-but-low-cultural-impact shows from this list. I think if you look at the current animation industry, all of them will name the same shows that inspired them as children and still influence their work to this day: Avatar: the Last Airbender (2005), Gravity Falls (2012), Adventure Time (2010), etc.
IMO it's rather that ‘Adventure Time’ and other cartoons were inspired by Don Hertzfeldt. Afaik Pendleton Ward was in CalArts right when Hertzfeldt's shorts came out. ‘Adventure Time’ ran at pretty much the same time as ‘Regular Show’, and they had similar style and mood — not surprisingly, since Ward befriended J. G. Quintel (and Alex Hirsch) at CalArts. These three worked on ‘The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack’ together before launching their separate series.
Also, if they can just, randomly specify seasons of a show, why aren't they excluding the last season of GoT? or the finale of Lost (haven't seen, but come to believe that the finale was considered one of the worst ever)?
It's really weird that basically nothing made out of the anglosphere is there. Squid game got squeezed in, but not a single anime for example is really weird. There is stuff like AoT and Death Note and neither is on there.
It's completely US-centered with a couple of British shows sprinkled on top. Even if your focus was just the anglosphere, UK TV punches way above its weight.
I watched it a second time and it was a very different experience. On my first watch, the ending surprised me and I thought it was a weird twist. On the second watch, I had to stop watching because it was so obvious. All the signals were there. I'd clearly misinterpreted them the first time.
Oh ya sunny is the utmost sit com. The characters don't change and stay the same, they don't learn and have nothing to say. I think that's why they have so much staying power.
They have permanently kicked the ass of the sitcom genre. Even their new season is funny as hell. They've been making the show for like 18 years or something and can still come up with good episodes. I kinda hope they just retire it if DeVito is ready to quit though.
So, so many poorly placed on the list. Band of Brothers is my personal number 1, but I'd accept it anywhere in the top 5; begrudgingly accept it in the top 10. But 28? GTFO.
I got a chuckle out of BoB being right before Key & Peele. Like I love both shows, but sorry K&P, to keep it real, your show is not “almost as good as” Band of Brothers
I'd assume that it's based on some form of measure. How many times streamed,, average episode rating, how many streaming/hosting licenses were purchased, etc etc.
I can absolutely see how a show without much narrative complexity but is delightful 'popcorn' to second-screen watch after a long day could perform well. It's all in which metrics were used and how they were weighted.
I also think they only checked certain streaming services, but not all. Because there are some very good shows missing. And also many older shows are missing. At least Six Feet Under made the list, as an older show. But it shouldn't be so low on the list. Especially when you see the other shows above it. It makes no sense.
Also I didn't see Utopia (UK), The Expanse, Silo and Shrinking, which are really good. The Expanse is seen as the best scifi ever made. How can it be missing from the list.
Then they added Black Mirror, low on the list, without specifying seasons or UK and US as with other shows. The first UK seasons should have been at least in the top 10.
I’m sorry for completely trashing the next month of your life, but I’m not sorry because it’s really fucking good. It has a bit of a slow start but just gets better and better and better.
I’m surprised to have watched quite some of them! And I am glad to see Andor high up (subjectively, I would put it number 1, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea)
Sales pitch: politics, political activism and action in the Star Wars universe. What happens when you are not a shiny Jedi but just a dude? Absolutely great, perfectly paced, tackling cool problems. Gives meat to the dystopian Empire. I will stop here, you should watch the first episode.
I dislike the Star Wars franchise in general but I loved Andor. Not sure it being a part of the franchise did it too much of a disservice though, I discovered it the way I discover most media (through word of mouth).
I've haven't seen the vast majority of these so I can't speak for their quality.
Some I've started but haven't finished and the quality varies drastically.
I've only seen four of these to completion (Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Mare of Easttown and Baby Reindeer) only two of which (Breaking Bad and Mad Men) I would recommend.
But the biggest questions on my mind: why would you compile such a list when there's still 8 decades left in this century? Will television as a medium still exit in 2101?
I was discussing this list with my wife yesterday - from the other comments we've watched more than the average person here. I'd say we've seen 4 out of every 5 shows at least one season and probably finished about 20% of them (with minor exceptions like spin offs or movies or new seasons in the last few years with a hiatus).
What struck me was the inclusion of Suvivor and Ru Paul - I don't doubt their cultural impact and significance, nor their importance towards their fans - but as a mark of quality of what a TV experience can be, considering performances, risk-taking, writing depth, cinematography, music, costuming, editing, props design, imagination and ingenuity - I wouldn't have included those in the Top 100.
I just look at these lists for some recommendations.
To truly choose a best when many of these are apples and oranges, different genres, short series, long running, everyone has heard of it, no one has heard of it, high budget, low budget, influential, experimental, animated, hard to write or produce.
I can take it seriously if they have The Americans in the top twenty! Really good showing for British shows in a US-based list. Poor showing for animations that are not Bojack Horseman.
I'm curious how they made the list... It couldn't have been just some intern / writer putting down their top 100? There had to be some sort of stats involved no? Like number of people watching? Number of weekly watchers? Impact on online discussions? I don't see what state it could have been which would have ignored so many other shows.
There's only one show on that list where I've seen every single episode: Chernobyl. And that's only because it's a single, short season. I started others from that list and enjoyed them, but finishing them feels like such a big project.
The Good Place should be ranked 1st because the list is subjective and I disagree with it, also I haven't watched most of these shows. Community would be in 2nd place.
::: spoiler The Good Place season 1 spoilers ("the twist")
I've watched the show 3 times and I still enjoy it (it's my "comfort show").
The vibe definitely changes on a second watch, or if you know the twist, but it's enjoyable either way! You notice so much foreshadowing for it and the jokes remain funny (funnier when knowing the twist, in my opinion).
Anyway, the plot twist happens at the end of the first season of the show, so even if, to you, knowing it kinda stains the experience, it has 3 more seasons after the initial twist. I really recommend watching it!
:::
It only matters for the first season. I also didn't mind rewatching it, as there are small details here and there hinting at the big spoiler (or at least that'll remind you of it)
So many shows are way too high on the list. 30 rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Atlanta, The Office (US), Girls... all really good shows but definitely not top 20. It's stupid to argue if a show is top 40 of top 70 but it's fairly easy to tell if a show is "one of the best of the century" and those are not. Adolescence, True Detective, Band of Brothers or Black Mirror set new standards. Those shows were good but far from "best".
Fake top 100 for sure. Op made it because he watched this series and wants to brag about it.
Where at IT Crowd, Seinfeld and Person of Interest? But yea, let add only American series!
/J
I don't think I know anyone that would argue with Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and maybe The Wire (I don't know any of you contrarians) but the rest of the list just doesn't have nearly the writing quality. Which is really weird to think about. 3 shows (really 2, Better Call Saul is really Breaking Bad) that are exponentially better than the rest.
Edit: I mean White Lotus is on there. I couldn't finish the first season. It wasn't dark or witty. It was just rich people being rich people.
I loved BB and BCS but it feels like you're putting them on pedestal. They're obviously examples of great writing but they aren't in a class of their own, certainly not to an "exponential" degree. I'd put Chernobyl or Band of Brothers, just to start, on the same level. Possibly season 1 of True Detective as well, as a self-contained story. And I haven't seen every show on this list.
I'll also say that Black Mirror has some of the best psychological horror I've ever seen. It might not be an epic serial like BB but not much media has scared me to the core like Black Mirror. Not every show needs to try to do what BB did.
I've tried to watch BB 3 separate times and just could not get into it. I recognize I'm in the minority here and that taste is subjective. But I genuinely did not like it without just being contrary for the sake of it.
One thing that I've realized upon rewatching Breaking Bad is that the Breaking Bad I know and love, the one that I rave about, is really just Seasons 4 & 5.
I don't know a single Breaking Bad fan that watched through the whole show at once. In fact, I would say most people put it down around the middle of the show's run.
Yeah, Season 2 is boring as fuck. Season 3 doesn't pick up until halfway through. It's not exactly the killer drama that the first season and the fans advertised it to be. But the overall story is what keeps me coming back. Walter is our protagonist in almost every season. But in Season 5, he is undoubtedly the villain. I guess the draw of the show is the turn, which you don't get to without finishing it.
I would say you believe this for two main reasons. One, those are some of the shows that you watched and are familiar with, and you've seen spectacularly little of what is actually on that list.
And two, your own subjective experience is dictating what you feel is better versus what is worse, which is ultimately a completely useless way to estimate how good something actually is.
Furthermore, lists like this are intentionally inflammatory. They'll put several genuinely good entries way too low on the list specifically so people will argue about it and drive engagement.
I mean, Westworld didn't even make the cut but Scandal did.
I strongly disagree on White Lotus. The topic of a piece of writing doesn't neccessarily affect its quality. Most of Samuel Becketts work is about nothing happening, Harold Pinter about people saying things are more mundane than they are and James Joyce about everyday Irish lives.
The story of the first season is more about confronting internalized homophobia vis a vis latent bisexuality and how imposter syndrome and patriarchal power structures can be used by misogynists to control women's romantic/sexual/marriage autonomy than it is just about people being rich. I also enjoy the meta-textual element that the structure of White Lotus is very much a pistal-petal-structure.
I mean you said you only watched a few episodes and I'm sympathetic to that- I've quit watching shows that just aren't my cup of tea, but it's very much a whole-show-arc kinda deal for every character.
I'd argue that The Wire had to exist for Breaking Bad to happen like it did.
In the season where Jesse and White try to sell on their own, rewatch the scene where Combo gets got. The entire cinematography drops Breaking Bad's blues and swapps to the Wire's shades of Grey and long lense shots. It was definitely BB's production team tipping their caps to the wire...Hell the scene they chose was even (plotwise) The Wire
Breaking Bad (which Better Call Saul beautifully expanded on) was amazing but The Wire is the OG
Idk. Depression and I are pretty tight, and I have tried to watch Fleabag multiple times and never made it through. Just so indifferent to it that I forget it exists.
Great that it is important to some folks, glad it was made for them. It just isn't for everyone.
Deadwood. Great show. Definitely belongs on the list. Cancelled too early. I heard rumors about a movie that would work as the final episode as something.
Some really well portrayed characters, some really poorly portrayed characters, and the writing after the first season and a half was plywood. Not paper thin, but pretty weak.
Though the majority of its runtime has been in the 21st century, it initially aired in September of 1998 (British version was back in '88). Every other entry on this list starts at 2000 or later.
The first few episodes (first entire season maybe) of Office US is worse, but as an entire series there’s little argument that the U.S. version was more engaging, created more diverse and memorable characters, and had much better storylines. Most of this is purely because it ran longer, but it’s really a very different type of show.
I counted all of four (Ted Lasso, Ru Paul, Parts Unknown, BSG), which yeah that kinda explains a lot. I miss so many references in my day-to-day, maybe I should binge some things for the cultural literacy...
OK I recounted and it was 15. Some of these are really old though, and consumption habits have changed quite a bit over the last 20 years. Most of these were viewed well after they originally aired.
Breaking Bad (2008-2013; complete)
Game of Thrones (2011-2019; most)
Arrested Development (2003-2019; most)
Lost (2004-2010; complete?)
Black Mirror (2011-pres; some)
Severance (2022-present; Season 1&2)
Survivor (2000-pres; some)
BSG (2005-2009; complete)
House of Cards (2013-2018; first season)
Parks and Rec (2009-2015; complete)
Stranger Things (2016-2025; first season)
Bourdain PU (2013-2018; complete)
Bourdain NR (2005-2012; complete)
Squid Game (2021-2025; Season 1&2)
Planet Earth (2006; some)
It’s like if a well-loved fancy restaurant served you 6 amazing courses, then gave you a shit sandwich for dessert. It doesn’t matter how good the other courses were, you’d complain and tell everybody to avoid the place.
It’s exactly the same way with TV shows. Shit ending = shit show
I used to dance and one of my teachers, in a situation where we had to improvise a little at an event that had hired us said "you need a very strong beginning and ending, people can forgive a lot in the middle."
So the end season of a show being shit is worse than a bad season in the middle. I didn't watch it through but that makes logical sense to me.
Yes. It’s the basis of storytelling to nail down the beginning and ending first, then major points inbetween, and then work on the rest. Ending makes or breaks a story, whatever the medium
book readers had been calling it shite since season 4 at the latest. folks who made it to season 7 before realizing it had fallen apart are a little bit slow.
The costumes and set work were visibly dogshit from episode 1. My friends and I were very excited for a high production value fantasy show to finally happen. Then they spent all the money on actors willing to do nude scenes (they must’ve missed the market saturation of fantasy porn and smut literature). I think I made it 4 episodes and was glad people came around eventually because that period between was unpleasant.
The sitcom format in general just doesn't work for modern audiences. The format needed entirely self contained narratives which could be watched with a whole family - that isn't what the market demands these days.
I think Seinfield sucked but I think all sitcom sucks, mostly because I didn't grow up in a house that watched them + moved to streaming before I had my own place.
I've watched almost none of these. But I've seen a lot of them advertised - hard. This feel like promotional material. I'd bet all of these are currently streaming on varying services. I mean looook at all these shows you haven't seen. Do you want to be the only one who hasn't seen PEN15? If you don't keep paying higher and higher monies to your streaming overlords you'll miss the the in progress award winning shows. Do you want to be a social pariah?
I'm glad you liked Shameless and enjoyed it; it's absolutely fantastic that you did. There's no issue with that.
But I thought it was, objectively, a very mediocre show. It relied almost exclusively on unnecessary shock value to drive the narrative and keep people watching.
It was so pointlessly raunchy and disgusting.
If you have to rely on gratuitous sex and violence to keep your audience engaged, you're not making a good show.
I'd add more cartoons and anime. Infinity Train takes the number 1 spot. The Good Place goes to number 2. Modern Family has no place here, replace it with Star Trek Lower Decks. Add Mythbusters and Blood of Zeus and Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai and BNA. Move Community up too. Get The Office outta here, it sucks. And move The Office down a LOT. Oh, and we gotta add Invincible and The Boys. And ATLA! If we wanna go with artsy stuff that "mature" people like, add Primal. I didn't like it all that much, but I bet normies will eat it up. Scavengers Reign is better than RuPaul's Drag Race, and A Series of Unfortunate Events is better than Stranger Things. And swap Squid Game for Kaiji, for fuck's sake! Kaiji did the same themes better.
I think it's more an issue of NYT readership skewing extremely old. Under-40 will have watched plenty of great animated shows in this century. But someone who was 30 in 2000 probably missed out on the 2005 Adult Swim broadcasting of Samurai Champloo.
lost is far too low for how invaluable to the way television is today it is. one of the most influential pieces of media ever. it should be top 10 without question
Influential doesnt mean good. This is a list of the best shows of all time, not the most influential.
Personally found Lost to be a tough watch after the fact, which takes points away. Same thing for a lot of comedy shows as well as some infamous ones like Game of Thrones.
They wrote the show into a corner. That made it not as good. Look at how Game of Thrones ended and you can understand that a show can be completely hamstrung by a lack of planning by the primary author.
Mythbusters, The Simpsons, and one (1) episode of Family Guy. Also, note, "best" is an exceptionally vague term, so let's not get into Internet flamewars over it. And, for the record, I haven't watched non-Western TV shows either. Maybe one episode of Pokémon when I was a wee kid.
Edit: I haven't even heard of half these shows. Succession? Fleabag? Atlanta? I haven't seen a single ad for any of these, nor have any social circle I've been in ever mentioned them. Complete unknowns in the top 10
I could not name a single Emmy nominated show if you asked me to. And honestly, as I've said elsewhere, neither could any of my friends. It's possible that I'm just in communities that tend not to watch television? But I think that it's crazy that I could ask like eight or nine people "Hey, have you heard of Breaking Bad?" And all nine would say "Yeah of course" and those same nine people will confirm that they have not ever heard of Succession. Or Fleabag. Or Atlanta.

This list is invalid because How It's Made is suspiciously absent.

Brooks Moore should be a TV star, or a household name.
No Scrubs?? Preposterous
There was a whole song about that
I remember, they " want no scrubs, a scrub can't get no love from them"
I don't watch no scrubs. Scrubs is a show you won't find on my TV.
Hangin out the passenger side of his best friends ride, tryna holla at me
And Brooklyn 99
List compiled by an utter moron. Entirely missing (among others) and vastly superior to most on the list:
Also, despite being controversial, probably worth mentioning:
South Park is not eligible as it started airing in 1997.
ridiculous rule for shows that have run longer than everything else on the list, and still popular.
Yeah that thought occurred to me - but since the list is as dumb as it is to begin with, I didn't bother looking for rules of eligibility.
Yeah the fact that The Office UK is on here and not The IT Crowd just shows they included it due to proximity to The Office US and don't watch British TV.
scanned the entire list hoping the expanse would pop up.
of course not.
I was hoping see Battlestar GalacticaThat one is on there, I think.
Edit: It's #37.
Thanks, missed it clearly
did you cry so hard that your tears turned to blood?
i really need to resume watching that show, damn..
Z Nation was so great.
I just started a rewatch tonight after having mentioned it here :) I loved the show and I think it's time to give it another go. I am surprised how much of the permanent cast is introduced in episode one.
What's controversial about The Walking Dead? (I only saw the first season).

Well now I kind of want to watch it.
I felt like it was an overcorrection of the season 6 finale where they left it on that shitty cliffhanger of who died. So they were like “well you want answers, we’ll give ya answers!!!”
But yeah it was bad.
Luckily it seems they were punished for it in terms of ratings. I honestly felt abused after being exposed to that scene, without a warning to close my eyes or skip ahead.
You can stop there, The first season is gold. After that TWD doesn't have a clue what to do with his premises and becomes stagnant
It just quickly got old and repetitive, completely uninspired rehashing of the same problems and storylines. Season 1 is gold, 2 is decent, don't bother past that
Excuse me there's a mistake What We Do In The Shadows should be at the top of list thank you.
Not to mention Our Flag Means Death
Alright well let's squeeze in good old Flight of the Conchords while we're at it!
Infinity Train is better
Not enough Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou or Mark Proksch imo.
Yeah but it has Ashley Johnson, Owen Dennis, Kate Mulgrew, and JK Simmons.
I'm sorry but someone implied that Infinity Train isn't the best show ever made. Sooooooo, straight to jail for 1000 years XD
If I can do my time on the train, then I accept this judgement.
SERIOUSLY.
What We Do In The Shadows was fucking incredible.
Arazonia!
I know a quote from the regular human bartender Jackie Daytona when I see one!
I'd go myself, but
bizarre half sideways bow
i can't be fucked
Community being 97th is heresy
Edit: And no Bluey at all? That show does absolute magic in just 7 minutes an episode
I already knew the new York times were shit
This was by vote of 500 actors/industry people, not NYT editorial. A lot of the actors voted for their own shows.
What is this list based on?
Where the fuck is Dark?
Dark not in a top 100 is how you know the curator does not actually watch TV
Dark got kinda bad in the last season imo. Id give it a number between 100-88 at best.
GoT is on the list. I’m not certain the curator’s watching past the first season.
I don't disagree but it should be on the list regardless
It's based on which shows the companies that paid them to advertise own the rights to.
Insane list. Look at the IMDB Top 250 filtered by "after 2000" and you'll notice the obvious omissions:
These are just a couple examples in different categories. Anime fans immediately noticed that no anime made the list at all, despite 10 being in the IMDB top 100. Western animation fans might have seen that Bojack Horseman made the list, but Avatar didn't (or if the editor filtered for "adult animation", Rick and Morty (#22) didn't). There's really no excuse for these, there is no consistent rule that would exclude any of these shows. NYT readers must live in the dark timeline where fun is outlawed and Taskmaster was cancelled after one series.
I don't get why would they skip Avatar on this list.
This is bullshit. The 21st century isn't even over yet.
Biased mainstream media REFUSING to acknowledge the cultural significance of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic 😤.

This list is not muffin approved.
True Detectives (SEASON ONE)
lol the people behind season 2 must be fuming...
Also, if they can just, randomly specify seasons of a show, why aren't they excluding the last season of GoT? or the finale of Lost (haven't seen, but come to believe that the finale was considered one of the worst ever)?
Because Season 1 was some of the greatest television ever written, probably because it was plagiarized, and the rest of it was piss in a sock.
I’m sirprised Scrubs, Monk, Lucifer, Dark etc. didnt’t make the list but allegedly a TV show called PEN15 did?
Honestly from what I've seen of PEN15 it does belong on the list.
Pen15 should be higher what the fuck are you on?!
It’s funny how many British shows run for 8 episodes and an ending, then gets remade in America with 8 seasons
I'll quote myself from the other post about this:
BoJack is such an amazing series and I never want to watch it again
That shit hurt me in a way no media ever has
I love BoJack so much. I keep thinking I should rewatch it, but then put it off. it was perfect though.
It's worth watching the German dub. The voice actors really killed it.
I watched it a second time and it was a very different experience. On my first watch, the ending surprised me and I thought it was a weird twist. On the second watch, I had to stop watching because it was so obvious. All the signals were there. I'd clearly misinterpreted them the first time.
Lol whenever I start a rewatch I know it is time to call my therapist
I think these are as good as any on this list as well. My faves.
Black Sails
Arcane
Letterkenny
Norsemen
Corner Gas
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Corner Gas mentioned?! Let's go!!!
Ferdaaaa
Arcane doesn't belong but you are right on black sails
This is a pretty good list, that I largely agree with. IF it were unordered. Ordered the way it is, it is an abomination.
At least the big bang theory and young Sheldon aren’t on this list
The best TV show IN ENGLISH... plenty of better TV show in other languages... just saying.
Any recommendations?
Dark
One show on the list is actually not in English: The Bureau (original title: Le bureau des légendes)
Excellent spy and geo political drama/thriller following agents of the French DGSE.
Orphan Black not being there should be a crime
So apparently, the 21st Century is already over, and pretty much every good show is made in English. Got it.
Always Sunny is SEVENTY-EIGHTH?! gtfoutta here.
I'm so far behind on that show, like probably 10+ seasons behind. I got tired of it after a certain point. I feel like I'm not alone.
I think that's why I've no interest in watching it.
Ya, imagine sienfeld except more silly.
Agreed they definitely are innovators and envelope pushers, they deserve higher than garbage like 30 rock
This is certainly a top-quality shitpost. I'll give you my upvote for that.
So, like,
How come they're all in English?
Squid Game at 72 isn't, but as far as I can tell, it's the only non-English show on there.
Because there are some unstated criteria for inclusion.
It's from an English language publisher?
all in english and the century apparently got redefined to just be the first 25 years
What part of 'so far' confuses you?
please point to the words "so far" in either the picture or title
I'm upset because (my favorite show) is not in the top (insert arbitrary number)
A lot these comments are more like
Who made this list lol. Shit shows are high ranked, good shows low ranked. Makes no sense.
It's a mediocre list for sure.
Halt and catch fire! The OA - really?
Hadn't even heard of it.
Halt and Catch Fire is so slept on, it’s not funny. It’s in my personal top 10.
Oh nice it has Lee Pace. I really like him in Foundation. I'll give it a shot.
I’m sorry for completely trashing the next month of your life, but I’m not sorry because it’s really fucking good. It has a bit of a slow start but just gets better and better and better.
I think it's better than Breaking Bad
No anime on the list means they're just uncultured.
I would add that being a SW fan is in no way needed to enjoy this show. I don't care much about SW, my brother even less and we both loved it.
It can feel a bit slow at times but the ending is absolutely worth it.
Yeah, I feel that being in the SW universe did Andor a disservice: SW fans didn’t like how un-starwarsy it is, non-SW fans didn’t consider it much.
If you liked Breaking Bad, I think you should give Better Call Saul a chance. It's slower but well-written and the direction is very high level.
arguably Better Call Saul is even better than Breaking Bad.
not through any fault or flaw with Breaking Bad. Both are absolutely masterpieces.
TLDR, The metrics are off so I don’t sweat it
I can get behind survivor being on the list since it was the first and had massive cultural impact. I'd probably put it at 80+ though.
I can take it seriously if they have The Americans in the top twenty! Really good showing for British shows in a US-based list. Poor showing for animations that are not Bojack Horseman.
Thumbs up for Reservation Dogs, but I’d have rated it higher.
I recommend Fleabag to basically everyone, and it's only two six-episode seasons, Chernobyl was probably longer
Sorry, Chernobyl only has 5 episodes. Also, Fleabag doesn't sound like it'd be something for me.
Andor not in the top ten is clown dookie
I wonder when the list was created
The Good Place should be ranked 1st because the list is subjective and I disagree with it, also I haven't watched most of these shows. Community would be in 2nd place.
Okay so I love Mike Schur, but I know the twist of The Good Place and that's stayed me from prioritizing watching it.
My question to you is, does knowing the twist change some of the comedy for a first viewing?
::: spoiler The Good Place season 1 spoilers ("the twist")
I've watched the show 3 times and I still enjoy it (it's my "comfort show").
The vibe definitely changes on a second watch, or if you know the twist, but it's enjoyable either way! You notice so much foreshadowing for it and the jokes remain funny (funnier when knowing the twist, in my opinion).
Anyway, the plot twist happens at the end of the first season of the show, so even if, to you, knowing it kinda stains the experience, it has 3 more seasons after the initial twist. I really recommend watching it! :::
Okay, that's comforting. I thought it was like a final episode thing.
It only matters for the first season. I also didn't mind rewatching it, as there are small details here and there hinting at the big spoiler (or at least that'll remind you of it)
No way! It’s definitely still worth a watch. I’ve never had a show make me cry so severely both from laughter and sadness. It’s beautiful!
It's intentionally sorted like ass for engagement
/J
21st century
Where is Garth Mahrengi's Darkplace?
Number one, in a different dimension.
Game of....what again?....
Something about a cold season approaching? Can't really seem to remember....
"Seasons change, and so did I. You need not wonder why."
"My clock is done." - Jon Thrones
Game of tits and dragons
No Pushing Daisies?
I really like that The OA got on the list.
Almost no one I know has even heard of it.
I loved OA and still think about it a lot.
There are dozens of us!
I followed it for couple of seasons before realizing that I didn't care about anything happening in it. It happens!
Slow-burn as fuck. Worth finishing.
I... did not get that out of white lotus at all
I mean you said you only watched a few episodes and I'm sympathetic to that- I've quit watching shows that just aren't my cup of tea, but it's very much a whole-show-arc kinda deal for every character.
I might need to re-watch The Wire sometime. Ive seen that opinion a lot, and but its been a LONG time.
Except the Duck season
If that's all you got out of the White Lotus then you went in trying to dislike it for being a show about rich people.
I wouldn’t put Breaking Bad over The Wire.
The Wire is, without a doubt, the best written show in television history. If anyone hasn't seen it, you have to see it.
The writing in Oz might be better.
Nah it totally jumps the shark when Marlo is introduced. The shield is better. Plus it had a whole universe
I wouldn't put Breaking Bad over many things. I'm still sore I made myself watch the whole thing.
searches for IASIP... 78th?!?!?!?!?
Suck it family guy/simpsons for surviving shows.
Office UK is better than Office US.
I tried to agree with you at one point
Never made it past episode 3
Silo? From? Severance?
Severance made their list.
Silo is weak. Only first season of Severance was good.
Californication seems to be missing.
The Expanse. Where's the fucking Expanse?
I've seen 3! The Office (US), Battlestar Galactica and Stranger Things. I'm cultured!
Hot take; fleabag was mediocre at best
Big disagree personally, but props for the hottest take ive actually seen someone make on this website
If you've never experienced depression, I think the show would be hard to relate to.
Idk. Depression and I are pretty tight, and I have tried to watch Fleabag multiple times and never made it through. Just so indifferent to it that I forget it exists.
Great that it is important to some folks, glad it was made for them. It just isn't for everyone.
Typical NYT list, lots of filler series. But where the fuck is 24?
Deadwood. Great show. Definitely belongs on the list. Cancelled too early. I heard rumors about a movie that would work as the final episode as something.
Some really well portrayed characters, some really poorly portrayed characters, and the writing after the first season and a half was plywood. Not paper thin, but pretty weak.
No whose line?
Though the majority of its runtime has been in the 21st century, it initially aired in September of 1998 (British version was back in '88). Every other entry on this list starts at 2000 or later.
True Detective shouldn't even be considered a series. Just an 8-part miniseries with 3 more fan fiction spins afterwards.
Vince Vaughn as a cop was the worse TV in HBO. I bet there is a star at the lobby when they killed that character.
I won’t watch anything with Vince in it, he’s a terrible actor
Same, he on my list of actors that I just constantly ask, how do they keep getting work? Of course Jared Leto is the permanent #1 on that list.
Girls at 13 is much more egregious, IMO
Oh please …
No
In what world is The Office US higher than The Office UK?
The first few episodes (first entire season maybe) of Office US is worse, but as an entire series there’s little argument that the U.S. version was more engaging, created more diverse and memorable characters, and had much better storylines. Most of this is purely because it ran longer, but it’s really a very different type of show.
The office US is broadly considered the better version. It certainly had a way bigger market success.
I don't watch a lot of TV, and this list proves it lol. I think I counted 10 or less, maybe 15.
Breaking Bad (2008-2013; complete) Game of Thrones (2011-2019; most) Arrested Development (2003-2019; most) Lost (2004-2010; complete?) Black Mirror (2011-pres; some) Severance (2022-present; Season 1&2) Survivor (2000-pres; some) BSG (2005-2009; complete) House of Cards (2013-2018; first season) Parks and Rec (2009-2015; complete) Stranger Things (2016-2025; first season) Bourdain PU (2013-2018; complete) Bourdain NR (2005-2012; complete) Squid Game (2021-2025; Season 1&2) Planet Earth (2006; some)
I mean, everyone loved it until close to the end, so hardly a surprise.
Battlestar Galactica didn't even make the top 100?
Edit: NVM, it's #37 lol
Hmm, no wonder I haven’t watched much TV in years.
This is Dicktown erasure! Also, it's ludicrous that Taskmaster isn't on here.
No Seinfield?
Seinfeld ran from 1989-98. This is a list of 21st century shows
But gilmore girls is in there? Please dont tell me gilmore girls was on during the 2000s and fuck with my memory
Sheet says 2000-07, starting on the WB and their last season concluded on the CW. Maybe you only saw it on CW?
Holy shit i googled and it started in 2000... my whole life i remembered that show being on in the 90s...wtf
Seinfeld sucked. What a dumb show.
For you
Shocking. Man has opinion and that opinion primarily applies to himself.
I tried. I just couldn't ever get into it.
So... For you...
Isn't every comment like that?
The sitcom format in general just doesn't work for modern audiences. The format needed entirely self contained narratives which could be watched with a whole family - that isn't what the market demands these days.
I think Seinfield sucked but I think all sitcom sucks, mostly because I didn't grow up in a house that watched them + moved to streaming before I had my own place.
@slaacaa Just American Productions, how poor.
There's at least "the bureau" and "the office UK", but yeah this is a bad list.
@olosta
I like "Jordskott"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordskott
from Sweden
or
"Babylon Berlin" from
Germany
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon/_Berlin
Downton Abbey too. I'm surprised a show like "Sherlock" isn't on it though.
Squid Game too, being the only non-English show on there, as far as I can tell.
Happy Valley, Black Mirror, The Crown, The Office, The Thick of It.
I would actually recommend PEN15 to anyone willing to listen
Dude same, it's weird that there's a couple comments specifically singling it out in this thread.
Pen15 is the best. You people are uncultured swine. You haven’t even seen it and you judge.
No Shameless? This list sucks.
Nip/Tuck is another great example of this.
True Detective (S1) should be in top 5.
Also, Orphan Black.
I'm like why aren't the sopranos in here and I'm like o ya that show came out in the 90s! Then I'm like fuck i'm old.
Also Gilmore Girls deserves to be way, way higher on that list!
Six Feet Under and Deadwood outside the top 10? Shame.
Wow... and we're only 1/4 of the way through it. I can't wait for the AI garbage to rain down on us, and the younger saying... it's great.
Hey, we're only 1/4 through the 21st century so far. It's too early to call it. The Grapes of Wrath reboot doesn't come out until 2040!
No Boardwalk Empire? ☹️
The fact that True Detective is limited only to Season 1 is a testament to plagiarism.
4 was decent. Didn't give a shit about 2 or 3.
I actually loved 3.
No Will Trent? No Tracker?
No Scrubs? No what we do in the shadows? No fall of the house of Usher? NO FUCKING RUSSIAN DOLL??
Which Tracker? The South African series was awesome.
US. Justin Hartley.
I love some of these shows. Overall I would say the list is OK.
Atlanta? No fucking way.
I actually really liked it an would put it on my top 100 list. granted I don't think I've seen a hundred total sooo
Are there ANY animated shows in this list?
Yes. Bojack Horseman.
Oh, cool.
But I can name a lot of animated shows better than Bojack Horseman.
For a mainstream audience of educated Western English-speaking adults, skewed towards NYT readership? I'd be curious to know what you'd say.
Dude that show jumped the shark the second the time skips appeared, I couldn't even finish it
Influential doesnt mean good. This is a list of the best shows of all time, not the most influential.
Personally found Lost to be a tough watch after the fact, which takes points away. Same thing for a lot of comedy shows as well as some infamous ones like Game of Thrones.
lost was as good as it was influential, so thats double points for it now
They wrote the show into a corner. That made it not as good. Look at how Game of Thrones ended and you can understand that a show can be completely hamstrung by a lack of planning by the primary author.
Interesting, never heard of a lot in the top 10. Maybe not available here or renamed
Lmao @ The OA.
That’s the one where they prevented a school shooting through the magic of interpretive dance right?
No:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4635282
Yes:
https://www.vulture.com/article/the-oa-school-shooting-scene-meme-explained.html
I don't agree with the list, but what is with the check boxes. Where's the box for "this show sucked."
Who puts a limited series next to a tv show?
Someone who doesn't know what the fuck good tv is that's who.
Key and Peele rated higher than Chappelle show? What are we even doing here?
Key and Peele did it better.
Idk the shows between breaking Bad and GoT. Btw. Where is the walking dead?
Key and peele should not be up there. Only suburbanites like that shit. I can name 5 sketch coms that are better.
A ton of very questionable choices on this list. Many of these aren't even prestige TV?
No Young Sheldon? Wtf
All time best show is Friends, everybody knows it.
Completely trash
It was a joke.
/s
Here you dropped this
1: Never even watched a single episode of any of these.
2: Why isn't Mythbusters on here?
Oh you’re so cool for not watching any of the top100 shows.
Just to calibrate: have you watched ANY western TV shows in the last 20 years? If so, which?
Does Sendung mit der Maus count?
Mythbusters, The Simpsons, and one (1) episode of Family Guy. Also, note, "best" is an exceptionally vague term, so let's not get into Internet flamewars over it. And, for the record, I haven't watched non-Western TV shows either. Maybe one episode of Pokémon when I was a wee kid.
Thanks for the clarification.
It's usually written that way as a joke in non-serious contexts
So you don't watch TV shows and then complain that you haven't watched any of the shows listed there?
What an odd way to phrase that. Now, everyone stop with flame wars or I'll delete the whole shebang.
What an odd way to phrase that.
Mythbusters should definitely be up there somewhere
What is this list, lmao
Breaking Bad #1?
30 Rock above The Office?
Edit: I haven't even heard of half these shows. Succession? Fleabag? Atlanta? I haven't seen a single ad for any of these, nor have any social circle I've been in ever mentioned them. Complete unknowns in the top 10
Yeah no one has heard of Succession... with their 75 Emmy nominations and 19 wins. Completely unknown show.
Or Fleabag. Or Atlanta.
Bro, what. Are you living under a rock?
Honestly probably? But I'm not exaggerating when I say neither me nor any of my friends have heard of those shows.
those three are definately not unknowns, and should be higher imo
