In 1765, the inhabitants of Arkham, Massachusetts, are suspicious of the strange phenomena surrounding the grand "palace" that overlooks the town. They suspect the palace's owner, Joseph Curwen, is a warlock.

In their book Lurker in the Lobby: A Guide to the Cinema of H. P. Lovecraft, Andrew Migliore and John Strysik write: "The Haunted Palace is a seminal film for Lovecraft lovers; it is the first major motion picture to introduce [Lovecraft's] creation[s] – the Necronomicon, and those cosmic abominations Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth – to a general audience. [Lovecraft's] obsession with the past is clearly presented, and in a heartfelt passage at the end of the film, so is his belief that mankind is a minor species adrift in a malevolent universe. The film strikes a good balance between narrative and action, and Vincent Price is, well, priceless as Ward/Curwen. The supporting cast is solid and the art direction by Daniel Haller is really quite good for such a low-budget film. Roger Corman did an admirable job as the first American feature-film director to stake out some cinematic high ground for the cosmos-crushing adaptations of [H. P. Lovecraft] to follow.

Devil Doll (1964 480p) (links in post) [Halloween-a-thon]

Yet another movie that was a Monsterdon watch party a couple months ago!!! This one was OK, not great but kinda fun in a campy way.

The story is about an evil stage hypnotist and his dummy Hugo.

The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "Shot almost entirely in close-up, and with the action highlights reduced to a messy jumble of shock-cuts, this is a very pedestrian affair in which the script seems rather surprised at itself and Bryant Halliday plays the leading role on a single note of staring-eyed monotony. The other performances are adequate, however, and the animated doll theme retains just enough of its built-in compulsion to keep things going."[7]

Kine Weekly wrote: "This is another case where a strong but fantastic plot has been allowed to dawdle into mediocrity. The idea of a human personality being transferred into a wooden dummy is an odd-shaped pill to swallow in any circumstances and the director here never goes fast enough to sever the bonds of disbelief, the result is that the macabre goings-on never generate quite the tension they should. William Sylvester does a workmanlike job as Mark and Bryant Halliday wears a beard and a burning glance to melodramatic effect, whilst Yvonne Romaine supplies the feminine interest."[8]

Variety wrote: "This slow-paced pic never comes up to its title in the way of shocks, thrills, scares, sex or other dividends for meller regulars. Filmed in England, its gimmick – a ventriloquial dummy’s revenge on his manipulator – has been done before and better by Cavalcanti and Michael Redgrave in a real horror classic – Dead of Night – and The Great Gabbo of 1929. ... Sylvester gives an honest, realistic touch to the role of the newspaperman. Halliday, however, burdened with a messy beard and one expression, the hypnotic stare, depends on his resonant voice to make the role credible."[9]

Film critic Leonard Maltin gave the film three stars in his review, summarizing it as an "[o]bscure, underrated mystery that features an eerily effective Haliday as a hypnotist-ventriloquist trying to transfer Romain's soul into that of a dummy, as he had already done with his onetime assistant. An exquisitely tailored, sharply edited sleeper."[10]

Morgan Zabroff for Famous Monsters of Filmland declared the film "[o]ne of the most brilliant films to come from England in 1964," as well as one of the most underrated films of its genre.[11]

Reviewing the film for Cinefantastique, Steve Biodrowski wrote: "Although deliberately created to replicate the eerie quality of the ventriloquist’s dummy episode from Dead of Night (1945), this black-and-white English production works tolerably well as a crude rip-off, thanks to a creepy dummy and an even creepier performance from Haliday as The Great Vorelli. The innovation here is that Vorelli is not only a ventriloquist but also a hypnotist who casts a spell over Marianne. Unfortunately, this Svengali-esque subplot sends the narrative down a detour that ultimately leads nowhere, since the real story is about the mystery of Hugo. Fortunately, the story eventually gets back on track for a reasonably exciting climax, which is nonetheless marred by completely side-lining nominal protagonist Mark, who doesn’t really do anything to resolve the story."[12]

MaryDeath is a comic about life, death, and everything in between. The story follows a young girl named Mary who happens to have befriended Death. Why Death has chosen to take interest in Mary remains a mystery, but despite his ever dark presence Mary finds comfort in his companionship.

MaryDeath Comics was created in the 2010s by Gwen Tarpley, though Cats Cafe Comic is her main effort now. The artist transitioned recently, and when I contacted her to ask about doing the Fan Edits, she encouraged me to remove her deadname from the strips. The main reason I wanted to do the edits is bc in a couple earlier strips Mary has a goth look but eventually she gave it up after a couple episodes. But I wanted a strip in which she retained her goth look. Finally, I wanted the three-strip stories to have a vertical orientation better suited to cell-phones.

It is 1968, and Dr. Robert Morgan lives in a world where everyone else has been infected by a plague that has turned them into undead, vampiric creatures that cannot stand sunlight, fear mirrors, and are repelled by garlic.

Although the film was not considered a success upon its release, it later gained a more favorable reputation as a classic of the genre.[11] As of February 2025, The Last Man on Earth holds an 80% rating at the film review aggregator Web site Rotten Tomatoes from 30 reviews.[12] Phil Hall of Film Threat called The Last Man on Earth "the best Vincent Price movie ever made".[11]

Among the less favorable reviews, Steve Biodrowski of Cinefantastique felt the film was "hampered by an obviously low budget and some poorly recorded, post-production dubbing that creates an amateurish feel, undermining the power of its story",[13] while Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader remarked, "Some would consider this version better than the 1971 remake with Charlton Heston, The Omega Man, but that isn't much of an achievement".

Another movie that was a Monsteron watch party in the past year. This one is all right, as long as you keep your standards in check!

In the 1990s, youth gangs take over areas in major North American cities. Two major gangs, the Blackhearts and the Razorheads, vie for control.

In 1999, while working with MegaTech head Dr. Bob Forrest, the CIA begins an experiment where three former military robots become educators in Seattle's Kennedy High School.

The film received a score of 63% based on 8 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.[9] Metacritic gave the film a score of 33 based on 9 reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews.

More than one goth has had the unpleasant experience of having the word "FREAK!" shouted at them on the street.

For this type of Goth however, looking like a circus freak is actually the point, so they have the last laugh.

With its love of the bizarre and the theatrical, its outrageous costumes and its Victorian overtones, the world of the carnival is naturally appealing to Goths.

The idea of a sinister carnival or circus occurs frquently in literature, including the novels "Something Wicked This Way Comes," "The Night Circus" and "Geek Love." Quite a few bands have adopted dark carnival imagery into their look and music (often blending it with Cabaret and Steampunk), includig Emilie Autumn, The Tiger Lillies and Midnight Syndicate. Common motifs include black and white stripes, tophats and probably anything else that wouldn't look out of place in a Tim Burton movie.

... the town is being terrorized by a mysterious murderer known as "the Bat", said to be a man with no face who murders women at night by ripping out their throats with steel claws. Van Gorder's assistant Lizzie tells her all the servants, except the chauffeur, have quit in fear. As they lock up The Oaks that night, Lizzie sees the Bat's clawed hand reaching through an unlocked window...

According to Turner Classic Movies, in an era of films featuring "rampaging aliens and sinister ghouls", The Bat's period piece approach was not a crowd pleaser, although its reputation has improved over time.[2]

In a contemporary review of the film, The New York Times praised Moorehead's "good, snappy performance" and Crane Wilbur's direction.[14] Variety called it "sluggish".[15]

Film critic Leonard Maltin awarded the film 2 1/2 out of 4 stars (a rating that he used more than any other rating), calling it "[a] faithful filming of Mary Roberts Rinehart-Avery Hopwood play".[16]

Allmovie gave the film a mixed review, complimenting the film's screenplay, but criticized the script's mechanical nature and lack of scariness, as well as the varying quality of performances from the cast. But they also stated, "While it's all done in a by-the-numbers manner, there's more than enough here to entertain whodunit fans".

HEY ALL Halloween is coming up, so time to review some of the creepiest movies that we did for Monsterdon in the past year that are still available on youtube!?!! This one was "ok"... not a masterpiece but not cringe levels of B either.

Asphyx refers to the Ancient Greek word asphyxía, meaning "lack of pulse", or English asphyxiation.
In Victorian England, philanthropic scientist Sir Hugo Cunningham is a member of a parapsychological society that studies psychic phenomena. As part of their latest investigation, the men have been photographing individuals at the moment of death. The resultant photos depict a strange smudge hovering around the body. Though the society concludes that they have captured evidence of the soul escaping the body, Cunningham is skeptical. ...

The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "After a promising opening which involves some evocative glimpses of Victorian 'psychical research', The Asphyx soon changes course to become a very static account of Hugo's growing obsession with immortality. The film is not helped by Robert Stephens' highly theatrical Hugo, or by a script which abounds in clichés and facile explanations while relegating the invention of the cine-camera to a minor parenthesis. The rest of the cast cope as well as they can, with Robert Powell giving a characteristically authoritative performance as Giles, but the script eventually defeats them. The idea of the Asphyx – nicely visualised in the elaborate experiments as a writhing, screaming shadow – is never sufficiently developed to succeed in being exciting; and the film emerges as an unrewarding endurance test, periodically enlivened by some of the non-dialogue sequences."[4]

Budd Wilkins from Slant Magazine awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, writing, "Not quite a genre classic, The Asphyx is a mostly intriguing mashup of Victorian ghost story and steampunk revisionism that occasionally threatens to degenerate into inanity with its strident morality-play storyline and escalating improbability factor."[5]

Brett Gallman from Oh the Horror gave the film a positive review, calling it "an old fashioned, cathartic tragedy with familial bloodshed, played in garish fashion and with the moralizing pathos of medieval drama."[6]

Stuart Galbraith IV from DVD Talk awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, praising the film's cinematography and lighting while criticizing its "clunky" dialogue, stagy blocking, and low budget.[7]

Bob Brinkman from HorrorNews.net gave the film a positive review, saying it "conjures a feeling of existential angst as it wrestles with some of the darker philosophical thoughts of life, death, and immortality. With a twist towards the end of the story that is not a gimmick, but instead a well-turned bit of grief-filled misdirection, this is a must see for fans of gothic cinema."[8]

TV Guide gave the film a mixed 2/5 stars, writing, "An unusual horror movie with an intriguing premise, The Asphyx is unfortunately marred by a weak script and unimaginative direction."[9]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 67% based on 6 reviews, with a weighted average rating of 5/10.[10]

[Vincent] Price plays an eccentric millionaire, Frederick Loren, who, along with his wife Annabelle, has invited five people to the house for a "haunted house" party. Whoever stays in the house for one night will earn $10,000. As the night progresses, the guests are trapped within the house with an assortment of terrors.

Numerous critics praised House on Haunted Hill for its classical style, likening it to old-fashioned haunted house films.[ii] Paine Knickerbocker of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote... : "The film is far better than one might suspect from its title, and yet it actually pretends to be no more: it is merely an old-fashioned mystery suspense film and a pretty good one."[30] The Oregonian similarly compared the film favorably to classic horror films such as The Bat (1926) and The Cat and the Canary (1927), heralding it as a "ghost story of the highest excellence" and "pure entertainment from the first reel forward."[31] Jean Walrath of the Democrat and Chronicle similarly praised the film's "classic approach" and commended the performances by Price, Carol Ohmart, and Alan Marshal.[32]

Kate Cameron of the New York Daily News awarded the film two and a half out of four stars, praising Price's performance.[33] Howard Thompson of The New York Times alternately panned the film, deeming it "a stale spook concoction."[34]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of 44 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The website's consensus reads: "Campy by modern standards but spooky and atmospheric, House on Haunted Hill is a fun, well-executed cult classic featuring a memorable performance from genre icon Vincent Price."[35] AllMovie has praised the film retrospectively, writing, "Campy and creepy in equal measures, House on Haunted Hill deserves its status as a horror classic."
