Same. It made someone make a decision from the get-go. It doesn't mean things like adoption or surrogate pregnancy won't come up later, but being snipped and explaining why and then spending time together seems to make the answer obvious.

Also, depending upon culture, expect both of you to be pressured about children. None of my family know, but my mom gave up in my 40s. My wife is japanese and the pressure is higher, but she's not the eldest daughter which seems to help.

Seeing as I'm losing my job and things in Japan aren't great, I'm considering going halfway back if I can make it happen. (Edit: now in my mid 40s for context)

Backend software engineer. Many japanese companies are killing remote work. I might have a legal out as I own farmland, but even living as far away as I do has been too big an issue for a couple of potential jobs. Most remote jobs out of Canada or the US won't touch Asia/pacific because of the timezone (even though I could start early/late to ensure hand-off).

I don't want to live in Tokyo again (or a huge city like it), not would I have any chance of selling my house in the near term (the buyer would need to be a registered farmer which is not an easy hurdle). Farming is not enough to live on and save for retirement.

The idea currently bouncing around in my head is to try to secure a good position in the EU, pay off my japanese house while paying a company to maintain the land for me (we have a dearth of farmland for rent that no one is taking, so that's not an option) and then decide to go for PR -> citizenship in that country and then decide where to retire (which depends a lot on attitudes to foreigners and the state of Japan in 20-30 years). It's a mess, frankly.

As a backend software engineer job-hunting right now, it's soul-crushing. 1/3 of companies want to build something AI (and not models they're running on training data they ethically obtained), 1/3 require the use of AI in the job (and sometimes the interview?!), and the other 1/3 contain a lot of jobs that use languages I've never touched, haven't used in years, or don't want to use. I've no desire to do nodejs (or any other js) development; I might touch typescript, but only out of desperation. I started my career when perl was king as a scripting language and have hardly touched python, but I'd be open to it if I had to. I much prefer things like Go and Rust. My Java knowledge is super rusty. I also need a remote job (at least outside of winter time) as I own a farm and must legally maintain it. I'm a citizen of two countries and have PR here in Japan. Those other two countries seem really hesitant to touch anything in APAC timezones, and Japan is doing a huge RTO push (which is why I'm likely losing my job).

Well, if things progress as they do, the end state is either feudalism/slavery at one extreme, UBI or something like communism at the other. It will also vary by state, but I would expect oligarchs to want more (even if there is no other endgame) and war (state, corporate, both, or the corps and states cease to be distinct) to follow. Does that ever end in a united earth? I doubt it.
