The day my boss, who asked for my help, said "That's not what GPT said" and promptly ignored my input, wasted 2 days of a customer's time and $700 of their money (refuses to walk back his time doing what GPT said), then finally allowed me to fix the actual problem using my meat popsicle intelligence's output, which took 14 minutes.
i am an “old hat” in my fire dept. been here 21 years. know a lot. seen a lot. still learning a lot. trained a lot of the newbs. who are mostly 20-30 now. and definitely a cohort of their own. eager. but also dismissive of some of us old guys sometimes. lately i feel like it’s time. i kinda want to transition to a more academic life too. but am grappling with the fomo when the next big job comes in, though i have been at a lot of local history making fires. just kinda feeling invisible, so maybe it’s time to retire.
When some actress died recently and there was like 30 posts on reddit and all I could think is who the hell is this? And to be honest, I realized I didn't care and it's time to leave reddit. Then I thought, I'm getting old, I don't need a virtual obituary and just want to see cat pictures or something funny after work.
Same… I am on the very mild end of the autism spectrum, and had to consciously learn how to socially interact with kids my age like I was Jane Goodall studying some damn apes or something.
Probably always been a bit out of touch. Never really enjoyed pop culture. The first time was probably around 10 when everyone started getting into social media and I was like why the fuck would you ever put your real name and face on the internet.
At 40, I don't think I really am. I've never kept up with pop culture, so if you asked me who the hottest musical act is right now, I wouldn't have a clue. My MP3 collection is so eclectic that even Lemmy probably wouldn't recognize half of what I listen to. So, if that's what you mean by being out of touch, then perhaps.
However, I do make an effort to stay abreast of current events, political movements, and what's happening in the world.
That said, I do feel myself becoming somewhat disconnected from the general cultural zeitgeist as I get older. I'm much more focused on my family these days than on keeping up with what my kids are into. For example, I genuinely don't understand the humor behind things like Skibidi Toilet, nor do I have any idea what the hell MrBeast is doing. I couldn't tell you what the most popular YouTube channels are, either.
So perhaps I'm not out of touch with the world itself, but I'm definitely becoming less connected to the culture of the younger generations. And honestly, I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing.
I'm a Millennial and I could kinda follow Gen Z humor for the most part, but then Gen alpha came along with Skibidi Toilet. That broke me, I'm... I'm done.
This just cements how chronically online I must be, because as a millennial, I am familiar with E, Ugandan knuckles, and skibidi (watched the whole series)
I think when I moved from not liking things younger people enjoyed to simply having no idea what they enjoy at all.
I've never been particularly with it on trends and such. When I was younger I knew the trends and rejected them in the spirit of youthful rebellion, aspects of my personality were defined by what and who I wasn't.
Then I got a little older and rejected the things people slightly younger than me enjoyed. This came naturally, because I was no longer the target audience for these things it was easy to write them off as if I were.
Now I don't even know enough to reject them. My knowledge of what younger people like seems to be about five years out of date. When something new comes along that seems irritating to me it seems to pass so quickly I don't really have time to register it, and when I find something new I enjoy there's apparently whole fandoms about it where (presumably... hopefully...) very young people fight about it, and they're fighting about things I genuinely don't have time to decipher. It's like it all moves too fast for my vision to really gain focus, by the time I'm able to tell what I'm looking at everyone else seems to have already moved on.
I really tried to be the funny uncle for some time, but everything is already out for at least 2 years when I talk to my nephews. I recently found a funny video of people with toilet heads
Literally never. Not once. I was your nerd at school who'd find joy in a science encyclopedia, and really thought everyone else my age acted like the dumbest people on Earth.
Today's "67" was yesterday's something else. And it's never not made me cringe.
To answer this without a Hall & Oates reference, a younger Gen Z friend of mine was talking to me about looksmaxxing and aurafarming and I just had 0 fucking idea what he was on about.
If you have kids moving into their teens you figure it out fast.
They start speaking an entirely different language.
As you grown into an adult you follow your peer group and friends through whatever social life, maybe going to places like bars or events that keep up with music trends. You all like the new banger from whoever that shows up on the playlist or New Year’s Eve party. You talk about new series, what entertainer is in concert or on social media, you still remain connected to trends.
But at some point life intrudes, work starts wearing, maybe start a family, and you have less time for these excursions. Crowded, noisy, expensive bars get way less attractive and maybe you have a couple favorite chill spots that play music you like. You’ve got your playlists set. Your streaming music is “bestof” a decade a lot of the time. This is where diversion starts, you choose the familiar over seeking out the new and exciting. But you don’t really notice, you got shit to do.
But eventually you do. Younger coworkers start talking about entertainment and people more and more often you don’t know. They start using phrases and slang you have to figure out. And like I said, if you have kids, you’re gonna have to learn 6-7, gyatt, and the most irritating - the repurposing of words and symbols you already knew. # is number or pound, not just hashtag you illiterate heathens. Maybe your closet, too. You’ve now had the same jacket for 15 years, among many other pieces of clothing that have lasted; jeans, shirts, pullovers, whatever. That’s ok, why keep buying new throwaway fashion? They’re still good to wear.
So now you listen to “old” music, maybe some of your clothes are old enough to vote, and you spend time on Urban Dictionary or KnowYourMeme so you don’t feel lost when younger people sart talking about pretty much anything.
I have always been "out of touch". I used to reject pop-culture because I thought I was too cool for it. Now I avoid pop-culture because it's a habit. Whenever I attempt to participate in pop-culture I quickly realize why I made avoiding it a habit.
I find myself actually going back and consuming pop culture from my time line that I looked down on as a hormonal teenager. I was extreamly judgemental of pop culture and hated specific genres of music, movies, how people dressed, whatever.
Its all my culture now and whatever personal bias I had due to precieved cultural differences are minimal. Now that we have matured its easier to appreciate the shared experience you have with someone in your age group and you're more willing to branch out with that perspective.
I'm still out of touch and regressive holding on to nostalgia rather than trying something new, but I think thats just what's supposed to happen. I think it would be more embarrassing if I tried to keep up and get into mumble ai rap or whatever's cool now.
Usually when I go back and check something out that I have shunned I feel vindicated because it was indeed awful. Just because it was just popular at the time does not mean it was ever good.
For example Friends, Seinfeld, The Office or The Sopranos are all just unwatchable garbage to me. I did go back and watch Breaking Bad after seeing Better Call Saul, It (breaking bad) was no where near as good (as better call saul) but I didn't hate it.
I also liked Dexter for a few seasons when I finally broke down and watched it though I admit I have never finished it because it just got so bad.
For the most part though I found I missed very little because what I skipped then still sucks now.
I mean much of it is still garbage but I am much more open to it than I was in the past. Maybe I made it sound all to encompassing but it has opened me up to more media I wouldn't of listened to before, and is easier for me to get into than whatever spotifiy would suggest to me.
There's a comfort in it even though its bad that feels safer than new. I found myself tapping my toe in line at the store when they had shania twian playing recently.
As soon as I cut everyone out of my life and just started going to work coming home and gaming. I just let life pass by because it seems like too much work to be involved in it.
For anyone reading, this guy is a great example of why not to serve in a military. In case your normal human aversion to hierarchy and violence isn't enough. The abuse they put you through to shape you into something willing to kill for them (and the killing etc itself of course) has lifelong consequences.
To "redditmodssucks", you find what you look for and there's a lot that makes life worth living. Always for love, never from fear. I hope you find some peace and maybe even a little joy. Hope is real, good luck out there.
I’d advocate to not join the army. And no there isn’t asshole I served you didn’t there’s nothing left leave me alone you and fucking happy joy joy with his self help book he wrote me I want to be left alone shut the fuck up.
There is always light at the end of the tunnel you just have to want to see it. These are useless words that mean nothing to you in the moment. But do know that in the end you will come to this realisation on your own time.
Your brain will get in depressive loops and you sort of have to fake it to be able to gain the function to do thing's that move you forward. Its like when you start working out again after years of doing nothing. Its hard and sucks and you have to spend a lot of time forcing your body into a state it doesn't want to be in. Your brains elastic and it needs to be in a state other than depressed to see anything other than depression. Your brain only has a hammer as its tool right now, and when something happens the hammer is the only thing it can reach for. And at some point you do unfortunately have to make a conceeded effort to push through the initial barrier. Much like working out it doesn't get easier right away, but it doesn't get better if you don't try. The more you don't try the harder it gets later. And remember that doesn't mean it gets impossible to fix ever.
You know also look into therapy or medication, you could just be chemically imbalanced or could benifit/suffer from something else. I can guess from your personality therapy will feel stupid, a lot of it will be CBT and will make you feel like a child. Really it does help, and I wish I could sell you the idea of it but explaining it makes it sound dumb. Just remember your brain only really holds on to a emotion for 8 seconds and you have become neurotic from the traumas of life which is a natural response. Your brain keeps working in loops so when you get a emotional response your brain will dwell on it, and the more you think about it you just keep refreshing that 8 second timer keeping you in a state you can't think of alternatives. If you play league of legends its like when someone is tilting and suddenly can't play the game properly because of their mood state. Depression for me at least was partially breaking that cycle.
And listen man I don't want to come off as preachy or pretend to know or try to compare our two struggles. I just want you to know it is possible and you gotta fight for it like they made you fight your way through boot camp. And i can tell you got a lot of fight left in you, so pick yourself up by your boot straps and what not.
I’m not reading any of that shit thanks for wasting your time all that makes me want to kill myself more please fuck off happy joy joy people like you make me fucking sick.
It wasn't the first time I've noticed, but a huge one for me was Weird Al's album "Mandatory fun". I had no idea who a majority of the artists he was parodying.
Like... 5th or 6th grade. I could at least hang up til then. I walked into class on the first day after summer break one year and was just like "wtf is everyone talking about? Why does the brand of clothes I'm wearing matter? Why're everyone being dicks?"
I can feel it happening now. I don't know what's going on on the real internet anymore.
Once I was a spry young adult and all the memes and culture was made for me. Now I don't even know what the kids are saying its like a different language.
I'll watch the minority report even though I'm not a fan of getting my info from YouTube, and I wonder if I'm the boomer watching fox news now. I don't even really like Sam sedar just with the boomers dying out media is made for millenials now and I'll click, click bait if I see it. I try to absorb everything through RSS feed if possible, and add sources like minority report to there so I can keep up, and fuck more and more it feels like the news hits me like it hit my fox news grandpa, and I'm developing my own figure heads I shake my fist at angrily and triggers. I'm starting to get old people junk mail. I haven't used windows so every time I stupidly agree to help someone I actually have to ask them where a specific menu is or how to interact with their ui. It threw me off when they removed file extensions from being visible.
I can feel the process, I'm kind of losing touch with normal people, the youths, a lot of people I used to relate to. I see people in public watching short form content and I judge them slightly, so many small things I've noticed becoming what I would describe as a ignorant old man. Someone's going to try to make me use a new app or I'm going to get confused and scared when I can't use Linux.
Its partially by choice but man the world just isn't really made for me like it used to be. Maybe being out of touch is the inability to change with the times. Mainstream media is just doing millenial fanfare now and milking us like they used to milk the boomers, so now everything I used to like has this weird corperate nolstalgic haze added to it. They're brining back mike myers to do a new Austin powers movie which will be fine and I'll watch it but it will feel alienating like they're trying too hard to appeal to me like they're trying to playcate a child. And all the cool new shit is made by tiktokers and stuff I'm too old to understand. I don't know what the hell the backrooms are or understand why I'm invested but thats what's probably actually where the "real" culture is at. The semi organic culture that is the most free flowing and inventive is often with the youths, and you just slowly lose touch with that.
A post a bit ago reminded me of one: When texting, I end sentences with punctuation 99% of the time. Apparently, this holds different meaning to younger people in at least the US. Thankfully, I'm not messaging any of those, but it still bugs me for no real, good reason.
When I saw a bunch of headlines about some movie award ceremony. "Who's So-and-so's mystery date?" "Everything you need to know about NepoKid, Jane Paddle's actress daughter", and so on... But I didn't even know who were So-and-So, Jane Paddle, or any of the famous people whose relatives we were talking about.
I'm out of touch, twice.
For me it was about ten years ago, when i started working in a company with a lot of people 10 years younger than me. They all listened to new French rap, so i gave it a shot as i am a fan of the 90s stuff so i figured i'd like it. The truth is i couldn't understand any of it... not that i hated it, but it was just so alien to me. I didn't understand enough of it to even form an opinion.
I realized that i had missed not only that moment in music, but also all of its precursors, so i really had no point of reference to it. I guess the pop music i grew up with, even the stuff i hated, was always one or two generations away from some genre of music i could identify. But this was based on a whole chain of influences that was unknown to me. A great feeling tbh.
When progressive commercials about becoming your parents did “finding the game” and “social media influencer” I’m like “well I crossed over to being with the parents I guess”
past couple of years most of my ability to socialize has collapsed because I can't relate to other folks anymore.
mostly because they are miserable and I am not. and they think I'm miserable because I'm not agonizing about the things they agonize about endlessly, so we are just never going to find common ground. and i come across like a massive arrogant douchebag because I'm doing well where they are struggling. and what alienates me more is... the are not legitimately struggling in any way... but they have convinced themselves nobody has it worse than them... it's just insufferable IMO. and often they are actually doing way better than I am... but think they are doing worse...
i also lost like a dozen friends since the end of covid, because they went insane, but they are more 'normal' than I am because well, a lot of people went insane from covid and I legit loved it and came out way better off.
i also can't relate to gen z and how totally miserable they are. even my own nephews/nieces all they want to do is agonize about how awful their life is and will be... despite objectively them being incredibly well off...
and i see a lot of this attitude all over the internet endlessly, which also sucks.
Not being able to afford first class plane tickets isn't suffering.
But lots of folks seem to think it is.
Just like the weirdos here who think the world is abusing them because the price of RAM went up and and their $3000 Gaming PC is now $5000.
This idea that everyone is 'suffering' is so utterly absurd and akin to hippies thinking we are all 'unenlightened' because we're not constantly tripping balls on lsd.
Have you ever been hungry? slept in the freezing cold? lived without medical or dental care? That is legitimate struggle and suffering. Not being a whiny bitch about how you're not rich enough to afford luxuries that could feed people for years...
truth is maybe if folks did legit suffer they'd have more perspective on life. Daddy not buying you a Porsche for your birthday isn't suffering, Daddy beating you on your birthday for wanting a birthday cake is. And sadly way too many people can't seem to understand the difference anymore.
Not being able to afford first class plane tickets isn't suffering
They cant afford to travel at all, let alone an(y) airplane ticket.
Just like the weirdos here who think the world is abusing them because the price of RAM went up and and their $3000 Gaming PC is now $5000.
The gripe is an $850 gaming PC is now $3000
This idea that everyone is 'suffering' is so utterly absurd and akin to hippies thinking we are all 'unenlightened' because we're not constantly tripping balls on lsd.
We cant afford LSD
Have you ever been hungry? slept in the freezing cold? lived without medical or dental care? That is legitimate struggle and suffering. Not being a whiny bitch about how you're not rich enough to afford luxuries that could feed people for years...
We are hungry (grocery prices are insane right now)
We arent cold, we are hot (global warming)
we cant afford medical or dental visits. Opting out as much as we can so we can buy groceries (see above)
We definitely cant afford luxuries. We cant even buy something as necessary as our own home. We are renting because we dont have a down payment. We cant save for a down payment because landlords keep jacking up rent.
truth is maybe if folks did legit suffer they'd have more perspective on life. Daddy not buying you a Porsche for your birthday isn't suffering, Daddy beating you on your birthday for wanting a birthday cake is. And sadly way too many people can't seem to understand the difference anymore.
Trust me, we have a ton of perspective that anyone who isnt in the bottom 50% of the poverty could never understand. Daddy owns a barely functional truck and has 3 teeth left to chew with. He was a jerk when we were kids, and has calmed the fuck down since he isn't able to realistically abuse anyone anymore.
Maybe you are too well off from whatever success you had during covid. If you want to be around people who are truly suffering, go volunteer at a food kitchen and feed the homeless.
You mean people should help you afford recreational drugs and a gaming PC?
You are the problem with the world. It's ok, you're in good company though, most folks think exactly the way you do. Everything is about them and their struggles, and nobody had it harder than them. Doesn't matter if they make 5,000, or 5,000,000 a year... the song and dance is exactly the same. No matter how poor or how rich it's always 'give me your money, I deserve it more than you do'.
I have volunteered. A lot of people in those situations are not suffering, they are just piece of shit who have chosen a life of exploitation rather than being productive members of society. A grifter is a grifter, whether they are homeless or Donald Trump.
You sound a lot like Trump, just scale everything up a few powers of ten.

We're doomed. He votes.

Brother I have never once been "with it", as the kids say, and the rock I live under gets comfier every year so I probably won't try to change that.
Lol I'm autistic, I've never been in touch. I rarely understand what's going on but I fake it really well!
I concur, but that masking brings so many other issues and stress.
I'm out of touch?!
No. It's the children who are wrong.
If you are an American president children are always right.
And out of time as well.
But I'm outta my head when you're not around.
I started realizing I was out of touch musically when there were big festival lineups and I didn't know 95% of the bands.

Is it really that much worse than the annoying orange and other random YT videos?
Not all of us liked Annoying Orange, but Annoying Orange didn't get a Hollywood movie either.
No, but it did get a two season TV show.
The children are wrong.
This just cements how chronically online I must be, because as a millennial, I am familiar with E, Ugandan knuckles, and skibidi (watched the whole series)
Yeah gen Alpha stuff is mostly off the rails. I still keep up with the slang and general touchstones though.
Whenever there is some viral story about some youtube/ticktock celebrity.

I've always been into jazz and funk.
Solid choices.

I then realized I'm out of touch and out of time.
Looksmaxxing is manosphere shit and aurafarming is just rebranded swagger.
I'm pretty sure the latest episode of South Park explained these concepts. I'm old and miserable, so I feel asleep halfway through.

Alright man
It wasn't the first time I've noticed, but a huge one for me was Weird Al's album "Mandatory fun". I had no idea who a majority of the artists he was parodying.
No, it's the children who are wrong.
When I joined Lemmy. But it's a good thing
Like... 5th or 6th grade. I could at least hang up til then. I walked into class on the first day after summer break one year and was just like "wtf is everyone talking about? Why does the brand of clothes I'm wearing matter? Why're everyone being dicks?"
When kids didnt know what CDs were. Or when people didnt know what the address bar or Ctrl+F does.
To be fair I live 30 years in the past when I can so I'm not susprised.
In middle school/junior high, when everybody started talking about rock music and rap music and stopped talking about video games and anime! Lol
No, it's the children who are wrong.
What year is it?
When I've seen people showing 0 interest in the content they watch, but 100% interest in being lobotomized for 60 seconds instead.
Every time my friends talk about whatever the new popular TV show is.
Me: "Um, I ate some edibles and watched a Law & Order marathon".
Out of touch with what?
You know... "with it".
I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.
I don't think I've ever been in touch.
Never been in touch!
I searched my newsgroup indexer by year and all of the movie titles since 2020 looked like the fake ones from Seinfeld.
A post a bit ago reminded me of one: When texting, I end sentences with punctuation 99% of the time. Apparently, this holds different meaning to younger people in at least the US. Thankfully, I'm not messaging any of those, but it still bugs me for no real, good reason.
Just don't start... Adding elipses... All over...
After the first few times that my kids sent me a meme and I had no idea what it meant.
When I could no longer understand the latest online slang, I realized I’m out of touch with whatever the current online generation is (gen alpha?).
I would fail a grammy nominee or tiktok "creator"? challenge.
What was the new rap they recommended?
I remember Damso's "lithopedion" album, and there were some other rappers with vocoder which I forgot. Even Booba was unknown territory to me
I’m not out of touch. I am, however, way more picky now about what I choose to touch.
there are lots of things I don't wann touch.
That kinda implies that there was a time where being "in touch" was a priority for me. Nah, I'm more interested in people keeping up with me.
When they started saying "ts"
So uh, what's that?
Means "this", or maybe "this shit".
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/ts-this
The only thing I can think of is the South Park episode with Caesar Milan tss-ing Cartman. I'm probably wrong though cause I'm out of touch.
And ahh instead of ass ._.
Ass-face? Or asshole?
Neither, just ass
Right around age 12 when I'd rather play Gears of War 2 than Modern Warfare 2, and it wasn't even close in my mind.
I completed the throw-in and stepped back on the pitch
When progressive commercials about becoming your parents did “finding the game” and “social media influencer” I’m like “well I crossed over to being with the parents I guess”
When I learned about the 6 7 thing two years after it was a meme.
If it makes you feel any better, your post here and now is the first time I heard of it. No clue what the 6 7 thing is, lol.
Oh good! I'm not alone.
Some of my friends are into anime and live play TTRPG shows like Critical Role. I have no idea what they're talking about when they discuss those.
past couple of years most of my ability to socialize has collapsed because I can't relate to other folks anymore.
mostly because they are miserable and I am not. and they think I'm miserable because I'm not agonizing about the things they agonize about endlessly, so we are just never going to find common ground. and i come across like a massive arrogant douchebag because I'm doing well where they are struggling. and what alienates me more is... the are not legitimately struggling in any way... but they have convinced themselves nobody has it worse than them... it's just insufferable IMO. and often they are actually doing way better than I am... but think they are doing worse...
i also lost like a dozen friends since the end of covid, because they went insane, but they are more 'normal' than I am because well, a lot of people went insane from covid and I legit loved it and came out way better off.
i also can't relate to gen z and how totally miserable they are. even my own nephews/nieces all they want to do is agonize about how awful their life is and will be... despite objectively them being incredibly well off...
and i see a lot of this attitude all over the internet endlessly, which also sucks.
Maybe everyone is, in fact, suffering a bit.
What does a legitimate struggle look like to you?
Let me help clear it up for you
They cant afford to travel at all, let alone an(y) airplane ticket.
The gripe is an $850 gaming PC is now $3000
We cant afford LSD
Trust me, we have a ton of perspective that anyone who isnt in the bottom 50% of the poverty could never understand. Daddy owns a barely functional truck and has 3 teeth left to chew with. He was a jerk when we were kids, and has calmed the fuck down since he isn't able to realistically abuse anyone anymore.
Maybe you are too well off from whatever success you had during covid. If you want to be around people who are truly suffering, go volunteer at a food kitchen and feed the homeless.
Lets help people.
What do you mean when you say:
?
Also, not sure why you're coming at me. Was just pointing out what you see vs the struggles I see. A comparison of struggles we see, if you will.
