I'm wondering how this actually works. I don't think our IT team would ever allow it, but even if they did, you'd have to be able to run everything M$ (Teams, excel, etc), onedrive/sharepoint, windows specific software like CAD, Bluebeam, use Chrome-only software like Autodesk stuff -
It seems kind of dumb to even do that, since you'd be locked into that M$ ecosystem anyway. But I'm curious if anyones done it.
This came into my thoughts recently, both due to a general thought of "humans just need to chill the fuck out" and also overhearing this person at the gym the other day (story below)
This person was doing a video stream at the gym (being respectful, not getting anyone else in shot, talking quietly enough to not disturb others), and I was like ok whatever. Then a group started talking to him and he was telling the whole story of how he was working 60 hour weeks and not being healthy so then he started taking supplements (and some focus drug..not sure if rittalin or whatever) and started forcing himself to work out super hard and get in shape (which he was), then he decided he wanted to make health/fitness his goal, while working his other job, so then he was working 80 hr weeks, then eventually he made this his main job, vibe coded a website, used an llm to scrape terabytes of any health data he could find then put on his website (this is the part that made me cringe hard) and now sells subscriptions to it. To be fair, he even told this group "yeah if you sign up and cancel on the 29th day doesn't matter to me you don't need to pay" as one does.
I don't know. I just got a weird vibe from this and then thought maybe that's the brains of these CEO's and entrepreneur types. It just feels a little slimy to me. Even though they were bettering themselves and I commend that, I just got a bad feeling off of it. I'm sure he was an alright dude. It's definitely part jealously; don't we all wish we could be that driven to achieve goals? I've never achieved a goal in my life. But I also think if humans in general chilled out (not being lazy mind you, do the work needed, but we don't need to build 6895 factories and deforest our natural world to make a buck type thing) we would be better off.
I think I asked before but never got a solid answer. I have a s23, I disable all google and Samsung services I can etc, but I am still stuck with stock android. I plan to move to a better phone in the next year.
However I need a solution for a full phone backup. Not even a sync right now, just plug in and backup all my apps notes and photos (photos are backed up already but I don't care about doubling up for now.
The reason being I dont want to lose or have my phone stolen and have no backup. I do have FMD installed but still.
This is one big downside of not being fully self hosted yet but refusing to use google products... No instant sync to a new phone if mine is lost.

so I have quite a few drives in my desktop, but the main one that really lags my system down is a 12TB (seagate ironwolf, yes i know..). It seems to spin up and down often, then whenever I open a file in nemo I get freezeups when the drive has to spin up.
I know my 2 issues, it's an ironwolf, and I have it formatted as NTFS (because when I got it I was moving from windows to linux and kind of needed NTFS to still be there for windows. But now, I don't have a way to offload it all to reformat as EXT4.
Is there a way to keep it spun up for longer? My power saving shouldn't be doing anything with drives but i'm unsure.

The water usage thing is basically debunked. The people dont care what data they are actually storing. All I really would have is, land use, noise, and power consumption. Maybe about how theyre recording you at every turn with flock? Which any factory being built would do the same. I just feel like I can't actually make an argument in front of normie's who dont really realize what's at stake here and have zero clue about technology in general.

S23 user here. Throughout the years my storage is just a mess. PDFs, images, gifs, downloads etc. I cannot manage it on the phone. Is there a better way? When I plug into my PC (Linux) I feel like a lot of my files are obfuscated...I just want a normal file structure dammit!!!
So like a doofus, ive never really done encryption on any of my PCs/drives. With the way stuff is going, now I want all of it encrypted. The issue is I have so much data from over the years and everything ive read says it deletes everything when you encrypt.
For me it would mostly be my desktop and my nas.
Is it really a matter of, I'm gonna have to buy a whole bunch more HDDs to copy everything over to, encrypt, copy it all back? What's the best (Linux) software for a mass copy task like that to be sure it works correctly?
Our work makes us use it for SOPs. Its honestly not too bad a tool, but there is no reason they had to shove ai into it. So much software is being ruined by this and going to have insane maintenance costs when the bubble pops and the cost of compute is through the roof.
For my personal devices, I will NEVER click your fucking ai butthole/diamond logo and I will remove it from every device I own. Its fucking infuriating. If its so good, why do you have to try to force it on us hmm?
This is something that I think should be studied more. I think a large reason chatbots are so popular, is that they are just used as a sounding board for people who either have no inner monologue, or no one else to talk to, or they've never kept a notebook/journal of any kind. The bots help them get their thoughts out, and while stroking their ego, it helps them think through problems. The llm isn't actually solving anything. It's just helping those people think through it.
It's interesting to me. I think a lot of people addicted to LLM's probably aren't good at critical thinking, and that's why they enjoy using it, because it guides them along (and can reinforce their preconceived beliefs, which is the dangerous part).
It's definitely a bad thing for human brains. It will be an interesting field of study in the future for sure.
Computing as we know it now, will likely in a decade be much like the manual car in much of the world. Only of niche value, and purists are the only ones who use it, and they're nearly impossible to find now.
Most computers will simply be an online-only (subscription based, of course) "terminal" with a search box, that you type in and ask an llm what to do for you ("microslop, please get the photo of my cat i took a year ago and make a backup copy to this hard drive" will be the extent of computing for 99% of people).
Just like manual cars, the enthusiasts and old school folks will hang on to them, until they are all gone and no longer relevant.

I find it hard to get into anything new, (especially tech) as I always want to learn how everything actually worked leading up to it, and I'm usually of the mind that most older things were better than now. However I figure I should branch out.
What's something new you've been getting into?
I'm kind of 50/50 on this. Some days I want to work alone, not be bothered at all, do the work and go home. But sometimes I actually do want to be collaborative and offer up ideas and solutions.
However I'm also one of those people who internally groans when the company starts some new "goal" that is buzzword bullshit, wastes a bunch of time in meetings, and ends up only making processes worse.

Was chatting with folks in the lunch room, and it came up (from them) about how horrible Microsoft /windows is, how they have a laptop at home with win 11 but it sucks so bad they dont use it and just use their phone instead.
I of course had to say (in a conversational way, not being elitist) my life has vastly improved since I eradicated windows from my life, and Linux is rediculously easy now. They all looked at me like a master hacker and couldn't understand how I could do anything on Linux because (their words) " you have to be a programmer to use it, its just a black screen!"
Sooo I explained how GUI desktop environments have been around since at least the late 90s, and while it operates differently under the hood, there are dozens of versions of Linux that act and look almost identical to windows. Not to mention the insane performance boost over windows. They were surprised any normal person could ever use Linux. These are smart people, they just have no idea what's possible.
Its just crazy the amount of misunderstanding there is out there ! But hopefully I made them think a little bit more about how linux actually works, I doubt they'll ever change but every little bit helps.

I am not of the assumption it is actually possible for any normal person that doesn't already have millions. The days of an honest mom and pop seem long dead (since at least the 90s, maybe 80s). Or if there are any, they are struggling to even stay afloat.
Like many, I thought I'd always want to start some sort of good business that actually serves a need. I now see that as impossible. I know people who made small niche software in the 80s, ended up making it a decent size company and retired with millions. I do not think anyone could do that today, especially with how tech is now.
I see plenty of scammy tech startups. This isnt what I'm talking about. Imagine a CNC shop starting today. They largely dont exist because no one does engine work anymore and most things are throwaway. Similar thing for any type of repair, none exist because its all throwaway. The only businesses I ever see are reselling things made by slaves in China. No one makes anything (other than 3d printed junk).
I'd be quite surprised if anyone is living decently off a real, honest business that they didnt get millions from their parents to start and that doesn't exploit the hell out of others.
I recently had to change to icevpn. Unfortunately they have no Linux client but you can manually configure it with openvpn. It works fine, however I cannot get it to auto start when I boot the PC or wake from sleep. I edited the config for opnvpn in /etc to uncomment AUTOSTART which did nothing.

Hey y'all, just wondering, for those of you using 2 phones or a "dumb" phone, how does that work exactly ?
I figure, for 80% or so of my time I do not need my s23. So id like to swap my Sim card into a dumb phone for most of the time. However when I travel or other things that I want more computing power in the go, I want to swap it back to my s23.
I'm not sure if this works as seamless as I'm thinking, and also, I only have an esim in my s23 since I changed from Verizon to at&t.I heard I can just walk into at&t and get a physical Sim for free?
Sorry, a little more phone related than privacy related. But I'm trying to get away from Samsung but I'm not ready for a pixel yet. And I don't really want a smartphone all the time anyway.
So our work has a few systems in place. The abysmal SharePoint, which most people hate (other than HR) and a typical set of servers mapped to network drives on all our laptops.
My question. What is a good solution for searching on that server? Explorer search is abysmally slow and offers no option for customizing a search. Its not even that I want to search the entire server, even just 1 "project" folder within it to find a document that has the word "list" in it instead of combing through 45 folders.
This really shouldnt be hard. But our management is more concerned with getting inaccurate answers from slopbots and degrading quality of work than solutions to actual problems, so theyve never looked into this. Half the people at this place dont know what a server or win explorer even is.
I would guess a solution would have to be implemented by the IT team and not on a per-employee basis. Is it just a matter of them turning in indexing? Really I'd prefer something more robust than explorer search.
Obviously IT would have to approve it if its 3rd party.
