You won't die from it anymore, and I'm pretty sure that as long as you're medicated, you won't transmit it either.

1

true. i saw some people who were 80 and looked like 250. like walking corpses. incredible. probably waaay too many sunburns, etc.

10

ever since i found out about this a few years ago i'm telling everyone i meet: there's fantastic medication (finasteride) against hair loss, and it even causes side effects! such as mild boob growth

note that only some meds to that, while others do not.

9

yes the thing that changed was lead posioning from gas and chain smoking cigs starting at 12

Also pesticides were even more unregulated than they are now. Remember how they just sprayed DDT everywhere in the 40's till the 70's. Even on directly on people. Shit had multigenerational consequences, even grandchildren of people who had a high exposure to that stuff are being affected.

9

I smoked from 15 to 30 drank every weekend in the same time. 40 now and I look more like the one on the right

Recently watched The Seven Year Itch (1955) and the man claims to be 37. He looks like a young 50. Cigarettes.

Just watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Nicholson was 38 during filming. I thought he looked 50 too.

85

Well he doesn't look 50 that's for sure. His hairline isn't great, but people in their 20s can have a fucked up hairline.

When I was a kid, restaurants still smelled like tobacco.

Didn't really stop until early 2000's

I remember this on older busses and coaches as a child, and the ashtrays on the back of seats. Mustve been wack in the 1990s with how much indoor smoking was still accepted.

6

Recently did a watch of Rear Window (1954), and yeah, there's a scene in the beginning where the main character's nurse calls the main character "young man". Main character (Jimmy Stewart?) was 46 at the film's release.

Wild.

17

Sunlight is the big factor in premature aging of the skin and especially face. Cigarettes are said to be a big factor too, as is hard liquor to excess.

The one in the left married at 23 and his 4 kids.*fix his=has

79

That explains a lot, what with the sleep deprivation and drastic lifestyle changes brought on my most kids.

16

There was a real missed opportunity to have a picture of Jason Alexander (who was in his 30's during most of Seinfeld's production) instead of James Gandolfini.

Still true tho

Wasn't Tony in his 40's?

Please say Tony was in his 40's!!!

When I was in my twenties people thought I looked older. Now I'm in my fifties, and people think I look much younger.

11
lemmy.eco.br

Yeah, around that age is when the accumulated damage of poor choices start becoming more evident, IMHO.

I have a friend who doesn't sleep, has ADHD, drinks and smokes a lot, uses vyvanse, and he still looks fine as fuck, despite being a little bit overweight. He's on his late 30s though, good appereance genes for sure.

2

I guess I'm just perpetually middle-aged looking. Mainly, I've gained belly girth, and lost hair, but my skin's still pretty good because, despite using nothing but soap on it, I stay out of the sun.

1

This is the best news I've gotten all week. I look like a less balding 90s 30. That's great for being 45.

Does anyone else tell themselves all the other dads they meet are actually much younger than you?

11

Yep, It's not only cigarettes, but air pollution too.

My wife and I were watching an episode of Frasier and he states that he’s 38 years old at one point. We were both like YEAH FUCKIN RIGHT. I’m 45 and look closer to the person on the right, but I also don’t give a shit about “dress your age” nonsense. I’m not going to willingly age myself up.

17
lemmy.world

He was actually 41 in the show. In real life Frasier’s actual age was 38 so Hollywood went backwards and casted a younger person then the character. Cigarrettes had such a massive effect on people’s looks back then.

9

Oh wow, that tracks. My parents smoked for most of my childhood. I’ve never taken it up and never will.

Not stress, smoking, drinking and no sunscreen does that to you.

I don’t think stress is any less, but actually more than in the 90’s

83
lemmy.world

Few people are as consistently stressed as Tony Soprano. Sure, he's got the big house, the big car, the ridiculously understanding wife, but he also has had to kill a few family members and more friends than is usually healthy. Once, he got a good friend indebted to him then burnt down his restaurant. All this while trying to keep two steps ahead of the feds. That lifestyle would age anyone.

24
lemmy.world

None of that was real though lol.

To be fair, I don't know much about James Gandilfini.

14
lemmy.world

Jim Gandalfini? Yeah I knew him. I knew him when he was a young, unshaven actor, before he fell, and spent forty years battling the foul Morgul stench. He emerged from that an aged man, his stubbled chin showing hints of grey, body and mind exhausted in spite of a great victory over the dark side. He took to wearing nothing but bathrobes, and rested heavily on his staff when he had to walk. His recovery was heavily reliant on resting his mind with the weed leaf, and rejuvenating his mind amongst the gardens and feasts of middle America, off the beaten track, as aeons passed him by. Soon, the great evil mustered its strength once more, and he again took to the battlegrounds of the Midwest, or as it was then known, middle earth...

Edie Falco in one of the later seasons gave one of the most impressive and stunning acting performances that I have ever witnessed on TV.

When she screams at Tony to get out of the house, she could shatter hearts with that voice.

Just came to think of it seeing as this is a shitpost or whatever.

3

All due respect, you got no fuckin' idea what it's like to be Number One. Every decision you make affects every facet of every other fuckin' thing. It's too much to deal with almost. And in the end you're completely alone with it all.

5

Individual genetics are probably more important. I had an uncle that liked like he was 42 when he was really 20-63.

10

Every time an old tells me something is unhealthy, mostly an old salt I do treework with, I tell him his generation is the reason why I have plastic in my nutsack and to keep his pack a day health advice to himself.

Phil Anselmo always came off like an angry white supremacist, but then in 2015 he expressed regret about Pantera's past use of the confederate flag.

Dimebag's views were racist as fuck. It's really a shame considering all his musical talent.

That sucks, I just got into them a bit, not much but working out just as a change of pace sometimes, and I endorsed them to a few people too. I guess I need to read about bands before I listen to them.

I'm sure there are plenty of metal bands I could get into that aren't nazis I just have to look for them.

2

I think that's a running joke in metal circles. You hear a band that sounds awesome and you spend the rest of the show researching to see if they're Nazis before buying any merch.

2

Water, sunscreen. I feel like it was more common in the past to cast a far older person than the age of the character they were playing too on screen. There is also makeup, style choices and clothes that can influence a view quite a bit.

6

less people smoke and drink. drug use also peaked in the 90s, and has been steadily declining since.

9

You mean you’re shocked to learn that a band that waved the rebel flag turned out to be racists?

14

They were all racist as hell. Do you know how man times Darrell and Vinnie have been recorded casually saying racist shit, including casual use of the n word, over the years?

The opening to Cowboys from Hell sounds like when my air conditioner's motor run capacitor started leaking and the motor would kinda ramp up at first and then just get stuck semi-stalling.

8

So what's the deal? Sun tan lotion, all the antioxidants we were/are all huffing with various teas, and of course the avocado toast? (disclaimer, sounds interesting but have never eaten that)

Wow I’m in this pic and I don’t like it.

Well except the Pantera thing. Fuck promoting Phil Anselmo at this point.

There's no reason to dress like a teenager in your 30s. I mean, feel free to do so if you like the style, but don't be scared to go for a more sophisticated or professional look.

-20

Maybe we should simply mature as a species and realize that we shouldn't judge people on clothing beyond basic standards of modesty and hygiene. It's just cloth. I don't want to have to work with someone of any gender that's not wearing tops and bottoms. But as long as your groin is covered and your bare chest isn't showing, we shouldn't care what someone wears, as long as its clean and well kept.

The entire idea of "professional" clothing in the first place is to separate people into artificial social classes to make them easier to divide and conquer. If the guys in the office and on the shop floor are both wearing jeans and t-shirts, it's easier for them to feel solidarity with each other. Are you a factory owner? Make the guys on the shop floor wear coveralls while the guys in the office wear suits, and now you've separated your employees into two distinct camps you can play off against each other. And if you make it so "the professionals" who make the decisions are visually distinct from the common laborers, it cements their position of authority and encourages obedience.

"Professional attire" has always been about control. Nothing more.

25

I'm going to dress like grunge is still at it's peak until I die

28

Fuck that, I wanna be comfortable, and I can't afford the tailoring for "sophisticated or professional" clothing to look good on me

20
lemmy.world

Fuck that, I’m not a trained animal (or any animal of any kind. Definitely 100% human.) and I refuse to live my life performing for others. Outside of the necessary things (work, rent, etc…), don’t do things you don’t like. Nothing is more childish than thinking there are rules for being an adult.
