Question - Temperature Control During Aging (mead focused, but also in general)

How important is temperature control during aging?

I've just bottled up a couple of brews after bulk aging for 6-9 months (kept that part short so I can use those vessels on new brews). The bottles are currently sitting on my air conditioned house, so pretty constant temperature (60 - 75 °F) year round.

For space saving, I think I want to move them to my crawlspace though. It is far less consistent on temperature (probably 45 - 90 °F for yearly range) with daily temperature swings regularly hitting 20-30 °F throughout the day.

I don't intend to crack the bottles open until the holidays though, so if I moved them, they'd be setting through the worst of summer and a pinch of the lighter part of winter at least.

But its my understanding brews are really only sensitive to temperature during brewing. For instance, I wouldn't question if a pallet of wine bottles I buy at the liquor store were left in a hot ware house for a month during peak summer, so long as they're out of the sun.

Is my logic valid? Would/could this be damaging to the brews?

Random Choice in Newcomb's Paradox

First off, if there's a better place to ask this, I'd appreciate a nudge in that direction.

I've seen a lot of chatter on YouTube with Newcomb's paradox lately (MinutePhysics Veritasium Wikipedia) and I've been dwelling on it more than I probably should.

To explain the problem briefly for the uninitiated: there is a super intelligent being that knows you to the core and can accurately (with 99.99+% accuracy) predict your actions/decisions. It has 2 boxes. You have the option to take either just the first box, or both boxes. In the first it always puts $1,000. In the second it will put either $1 million if it thinks you'll take just the first box; or $0 if it thinks you'll take both.

The apparent contradiction is explained in the videos.

So the solution to the problem I've come to is that you should remove your own ability to decide from your "decision" on whether to take the second box.

That is, you walk in the room, you flip a coin (or some similar random chooser) and on heads take both; on tails just take the first.

I think I'm failing to imagine all the consequences of this, but I can't decide on what this would imply about the super intelligence's choose of wether to put the $1 million into the box.

Any thoughts on this?

Super Speed Build - Pascifist Ascent

Hello Fellow Crawlers,

Edit: was really hopeful this build would work, but alas it does not. One of the debuffs from the Amulet negates all speed bonuses ("The Amulet weighs heavy in your inventory"). That said, moving this fast makes dancing around the Final Boss a piece of cake (almost un-fun levels of easy).

So I've been constantly vexed by the Pacifist Ascent achievement for my couple years of playing this game.

On my current run though, I landed an early Ring Of Wealth which I've blown basically all my Scrolls Of Upgrades on (currently +14 with one SoU in inventory). I double lucked out and an enemy dropped a +5 Ring of Wealth on floor ~21.

I grinded on floor 24 until I got a few Scrolls of Transmutations and rerolled both, landing with a +5 Ring of Arcana and a +14 Ring of Haste.

Also, my armor happens to have the Glyph of Swiftness (not my favorite, but def usable) and is hero version of Plate Mail at +4.

So I was trying to do the math on how fast I actually move with all this, but it looks like the wiki has some of the math wrong (or maybe I'm just incompetent at English - very valid possibility) since it says my speed should be something like 9*10^9 spaces per turn.

Doing a quick experiment, it would appear I move a pinch more than 40 spaces per turn.

Is this math about right? Is this fast enough (with a bank of ~10 health potions to do a pacifist ascent? I also have a +7 ring of Might - would I have better luck equipping that before I run back to the top?

Also for context, I'm running the Warden with the Rat King's Crown. Artifact is a +10 Chalice of Blood and trinket is a +3 Parchment Scrap (Shit, as I list that all out, I realize this has been an incredibly lucky run).

Capsicumel Advice

Hi all,

Looking to try my hand at a Capsicumel (spicy mead flavored with peppers). I'd heard about these years and years ago, but never put much thought to it till recently.

I'm hesitant to go all in on my first test batch, but saw that crushed red peppers are a decent way to begin to add spice. I think I want to shoot for a semisweet brew with mild spice - primary flavor should be comparable to a traditional mead, but with a bit of a spicy kick.

I've read that jalapeños are the go to for a mild Capsicumel, but I'm worried even that might be too much (I have experience infusing tequila with jalapeños, and that goes off the rails fast).

I was thinking of using crushed red peppers as the spice source.

Does anyone have experience with this they'd like to share?

Roomba Max 705 - Anyone else gotten it to work?

Wife gave me a heads up that she expects we'll get a Roomba from her parents for Christmas - most likely a Roomba Max 505 or 705 (or the Costco variations on those).

Looking at the Roomba Integrations page for HA, I saw this line:

It currently does NOT work with the newer x05 Wi-Fi models, such as Roomba 105, 405, and 505

I was wondering if anyone had tinkered with any of those candidate models and had any success getting them to work with HA?

Feature Request: Snoozing Communities (without removing from your subscriptions)

Hey Devs,

So I'm getting really sick of the XKCD Dependency derived memes being posted on [email protected] and other similar communities.

I still like the communities and don't want to leave them....I just want to not hear from then till this far has passed. It sure would be handy if I could block them from showing up in my feeds for 5-10 days.

Either way, appreciate your consideration!

Edit: accidentally linked wrong community.

Probably n00b Question - Mead Brewing

For context, I've dabbled in home brewing. I've made ~4 successful batches based on online recipes. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but also not a complete amateur.

So what happens if you don't rack your mead/wine? I suppose the notion I have is to let it set in primary (assuming there's no fruit/spices to remove after initial fermentation) until its fully clarified before going straight to bottling?

I guess I've assumed there is some problem in the clarification step if you don't "get rid of" the dead yeast that precipitates, but I've never seen anything exploring that as a method.

Can anyone offer their experience?

Screen isues after latest update

Just got set up with latest update and am having issues with up swipes when scrolling (e.g. on webpages), when up swiping to access open apps/full app listing, and when trying to "back" swipe (i.e. trying to back out of a menu.

To be more descriptive, if I stop scrolling with up swipes, usually the next up swipe won't work and I'll need to do it twice to have it register the gesture.

For opening my list of apps and the full app listing (swiping from very bottom) I usually have to try about 5 times for it to register the gesture. Same for back swiping.

I use the standard Grapheme launcher and haven't installed any new apps since the update. Issue started this morning after the reboot for OS upgrade. I do have a screen protector, but I'm not seeing any issues with any tapping gestures, so I doubt that's the cause.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know any fixes?

Save help / warning to other n00bs

cross-posted from: https://infosec.pub/post/30689546

So recently had a hankering for some Pokémon hacks so booted up my old Pokémon Storm Silver ROM (using retroarch with Desmume as emulator).

I spun up a new game and played a bit, but it wouldn't let me save a new game since the ROM had my old save data. I decided to just save the game state with the built in retro arch save state functionality. So beat the champion using save states as alternative save feature with 60 hours on game clock (probably MUCH less due to my abuse of ffw feature).

But when you beat the champion, it dumps you back to the title screen. From there, I can only load my old data (since my current play isn't properly saved in the game data). As such, I can't play any of the post elite four content.

Anyone aware of a workaround where I can erase the games data from a save state? Kinda feels like I'm just SOL.

If I am, let this stand as a warning to other Pokémon fans. Always take the time to clear your old data!

App Store Recommendations

Just recently took the leap to Graphene OS from stock android.

One problem I'm having is getting my apps and keeping them updated. Obviously I've been trying to use F-Droid, Accrescent, and the Grapheme provided app store where I can, but work and friends require me to have apps not available there.

I've been using Aurora Store for everything else, but it seems really buggy (tons of instances where apps won't update, will need ~3 tries to properly install, will notify me there was an error when the app clearly installed, etc). Additionally, I saw somewhere that Aurora store has some privacy/security issues (but didn't dive deeper to see what was meant by that).

I've read Obtanium is another option, but it looks like that still will not meet all my needs.

I suppose I should also say that I'm hesitant to use the Play Store / Play Services at all. I get there's sandboxing around them that makes them less invasive, but I don't full grasp how Graphene accomplishes that / what specifically it prevents.

What are you guys using for your App Stores? Should I just put aside my concerns and trust the sandboxed Play Store?

Appreciate your attention and consideration on this!

How does this pic show that Elon Musk doesnt know SQL?

I'm a tech interested guy. I've touched SQL once or twice, but wasn't able to really make sense of it. That combined with not having a practical use leaves SQL as largely a black box in my mind (though I am somewhat familiar with technical concepts in databasing).

With that, I keep seeing [pic related] as proof that Elon Musk doesn't understand SQL.

Can someone give me a technical explanation for how one would come to that conclusion? I'd love if you could pass technical documentation for that.

Latest / impending Reddit bumble + Why to expect influx from Reddit?

I've heard Reddit is setting themselves up for another major fumble and that it relates to how much Spez is a fanboy of Elon Musk.

I can't find any details on the drama playing out though. Can someone explain the details of what's going on?

I would love to see Lemmy grow with another big "Rexxit" event, but I'm not seeing anything happening to cause one.

Doom Slayer Attempt - So Close, Yet Too Far

Was feeling frisky and decided to attempt to get the Doom Slayer achievement (Defeat the final boss with all demon spawners alive and Badder Bosses challenge enabled).

Been attempting it for a week or so and rarely make it past the 1st boss (I've gotten too used to fighting normal bosses - these challenge bosses keep hanging me up).

Mis-fired a caustic potion at Yog while one of the fists was still up. If I hadn't wasted that potion, I'm pretty sure I would've won this fight.

First time actually making it to the final boss fight with Badder Bosses on, so I feel really accomplished to have made it this close.

Edit:

A week and half a dozen tries later, finally made it!
And with TWO challenges on (ran with Swarm Intelligence on as well).
(Please ignore how much of a one trick pony I am)
