PETA is the dog that caught the car. It has no clue what to do now, and it continually hurts itself in its confusion.

There was an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! all about PETA. Gives a good overview of what they're really all about.

lemmy.world

Yeah they were killing more dogs and cats then kill shelters. Because fucking sociopaths. They don't even believe in pets.

34
lemmy.world

They run no rejection animal shelters. Since people in general buy too many pups from breeders other animal shelters have to reject many animals that people neglect and try to get rid of. PETA does not reject any of those that get rejected by other shelters. This means they have a huge overflow of animals that people bring there. Sadly that means euthanizing ones that they do not have the money to support. If you are pro-pets and do not fund PETA to support all the neglected pets it feels a bit hypocritical to criticize them for euthanizing when the problem is that there is too many neglected pets.

"They like to bite off more than they can chew so of course they have to spit it all over the table"

I understand, and agree, that the root of the problem is the amount of abandoned animals but I still think that what peta does is wrong. By accepting more animals than they can care for they are robbing those animals the chance to find a shelter that can actually take them in, or someone willing to adopt them, or a temporary foster home, even a life as a stray could be better than death IMO. Euthanasia should only be used as a last resort, I dont think peta is doing enough to exhaust their options and, I reiterate, they are not allowing others to try by pretending to shelter those animals. A no rejection shelter that kills the animals they cant care for is just a regular shelter with extra (and careless) steps.

I can barely fund myself

I think PETA euthanizing the animals is better than pet owners creative ways to kill their pets because shelters won’t take them.

The other shelters are already full, that's why they take in so many animals. They are the last stop.

I genuinely don't know what people expect PETA to do in this context.

4

Spending more resources on better facilities for the animals and less (preferably none) on AI slop ad campaigns and publicity stunts would be a good start.

4

Euthanasia should only be used as a last resort

That is... that is what it is now, basically? People in animal shelters generally don't want to kill the animals, but what are they going to do, if they have places for fifty, and five hundred in need? They are killing them, because it is the last resort. There just are not enough resources for all the dogs - or other animals - needing help.

4

If you are pro-pets, don't buy "designer" puppies. Get your animals from a shelter, or from rescues.

I absolutely adore betta fish, but I sure as hell won't buy one. I don't want to support keeping fish in tiny cups.

Frankly, what we need is legislation that forces pet stores to ensure that any animal kept with an intent to sell mush be housed and displayed in an appropriate enclosure for it to survive its entire natural life. That way the animals don't suffer if they aren't sold, and people get a good idea of what an actual appropriate setup looks like for that animal. I see too many nightmares on Craigslist and Facebook where people are keeping a 5ft corn snake in a 10 gallon enclosure because that's what the baby corn snake was in at the pet store.

12

Sadly that means euthanizing ones that they do not have the money to support.

Ah, yes. The only ethical euthanasia are the ones we conduct!

2

All the animal protection laws in the US can be traced back to peta lobbing. Bet P&T were sponsored by KFC or other animal meat industry.

The other layer here is gibberish. "L'H YBQRH DIM"?

8

They are a psy-op to make the public hate vegans.

14
lemmy.world

PETA has always felt like a corporate strategy in the same vein as the oil companies infiltrating green movements and steering them away from nuclear back in the 70's and 80's. Like PETA exists to make Vegans and Vegetarians look bad, imo.

26
lemmy.ca

Yup.

Just had a random thought... twitch.tv is owned by Jeff Bezos. Hasan Piker is on the front page of that site any time he turns on his webcam. That's kinda weird isn't it?

Don't know why I just thought of that.

0

Hasan is a big streamer

Big streamers make twitch money

Bezos loves money

Not so weird

2
lemmy.today

All Vegans, animal lovers, anyone with empathy hates PETA. Fuck PETA.

17

Plenty of vegans do not hate PETA. We may not always agree with their actions, like using generative AI to make ads, but they do a lot of good work and have contributed much to the vegan movement.

Also,

Vegans, animal lovers, anyone with empathy

pretty redundant

-3
Camreply
scribe.disroot.org

Then plenty of vegans aren't aware all the shit PETA does.

2

Yeah it's usually some nebulous handwaving or disinformation and not concrete examples of their policies so it makes sense that not all would be "aware" of it

2

there are so many better vegan orgs than peta. peta is just clickbait for twitter.

16

...To accomplish goals?

ALF was pretty cool but the government didn't really like them too much.

I don't know much about them but I know them because of this stupid poster:

Your anger is understandable. Cognitive dissonance is a deeply frustrating feeling to experience. It takes effort and self-control to push past it and reflect on why you might hate those who fight for others.

Maybe you're too young to remember women wearing shoulder pads but that shit is way out of fashion and this ad is garbage.

2

Yeah, when women wore shoulder pads it was obvious and for looks. This is just a women's head juxtaposed on a male in a suit.

2
lemmy.world

nothing changes

You're an animal already. Humans are animals.

11

lol. they're also using the aesthetic of a mormon wife to sell their message. that lady buys 20 pounds of beef a week.

trust me, i used to live in salt lake city.

8

I'm not sure what PETA was thinking here... I'd reckon that it would be unlikely for people who respond to the proto-fascist propaganda style to consider going vegan.

5
piefed.social

Surprising that anti-Peta sentiment is so prevalent here on Lemmy, kind of thought that would be left behind at Reddit. Aside from their deliberately abrasive marketing and the misinformation about them kidnapping people's pets to euthanize them, what did they do?

3

While animal activism is a good thing, PETA has a unique "the ends justify the means approach" that gives other activists a bad name. Historically they were famous for extreme publicity stunts to raise awareness for animals who can't advocate for themselves, but in recent years function more as a lobbyists interweaving animal protectionism with various unrelated issues. These lobbying efforts are contributing to the erosion and brain drain of American academic science among other important issues.

Full disclosure, I'm biased and affiliated with a non-profit trying to save academic research in Oregon. PETA has been the largest source of misinformation, using a huge amount of money to establish billboard campaigns, targeted ads, and misleading polls to paint the research center as villainous. Everyone wants to protect animals but the nuance of protecting life saving research dependant on animal models is a much harder position to argue than "save the animals".

Research is slowly drifting away from animal testing, but today many scientific breakthroughs (some concrete examples currently under threat include a cure for HIV, GLP1S, Non-hormonal birth control) rely on animals and non-animal alternatives haven't yet caught up in capability.

If your interested in learning more, Save Science Oregon is a website we've built to battle some of this information.

9

PETA would be more respected if they weren't so batshit crazy. Their is literally no line that they wouldn't cross just for free publicity. They are just as bad as religion when it comes to rampant proselytizing.

9

"They kill animals!"

That's overwhelmingly the critique people have of PETA. They humanely euthanize instead of just letting animals starve on the streets. Not one viable alternative has been proposed here beyond "let other shelters try to adopt them" like there are shelters turning animals away for the sake of turning them away and not because they literally don't have the capacity to do anything.

That's why the overwhelming majority of these complaints are just vague innuendo about PETA doing "cruelty," whatever that means exactly.

They pointed out that smug carnist bros are actually terrible people. They will never be forgiven in these sorts of spaces.

-4

They say it's because "PETA is crazy!" or some other non-statement like they don't turn around and bitch about vegans as a whole.

People don't hate them because they're "annoying" or "crazy." They hate them because they're right. No one wants to be confronted by their Jungian shadow.

2

Kinda tracks with their history. PETA kills animals that they take in at a much higher rate than any other animal shelter. But yeah, keep generating click bait headlines to advance your cause.

Omg. If we gonna start a fight about everything we might as well live in the forest

I am against the genocide of Palestine, which is happening. What the hell is that question, dude?

Vegans shouldn't let themselves be associated with the terrorists of PETA.

How do you know this was A.I generated? Legitimate question. PETA is the worst.

stylistically: AI art has only a few categories it seems to do.

It always goes for this particular blend between photo realistic and westernised anime proportions and then finish that off in whatever style it's told to do. Which is either again realism or cartoony shading or whatever blend it comes up with.

It also doesn't express itself through composition or shape. It goes for (ironically) anatomical correctness in as far that it knows that.

There is a yellow tint to it (probably a artifact from AI images being trained on alot of images)

8

No one is paying to have this style drawn by hand anymore. If you see this style in a new ad, it's AI.

No one who can draw in this style does it anymore, because the style is tainted.

Odds are very strongly in favor of this being AI, even if it could have been drawn by hand.

Why? Vat grown meat doesn't inherently kill a sentient being. Eating insects does.

The strange part of your second bit is you attack OP for being anti-AI while you yourself are anti-AI, evidently not realizing that reducing PETA's use of AI would definitely reduce the use of AI against Palestinians in a simple funding sense; paying money to AI companies to make ads like PETA is presumably doing/supporting helps the companies that develop AI weapons that are used against Palestinians.

Classic purity test infighting to make yourself feel better by attacking someone, even if they're your ally.

That ad isn't anything you couldn't do using open models and tools on your own GPU. Not saying that they did but it's not anything you'd necessarily need to pay those companies for.
