It's church thrift store run by elderly people and they get overwhelmed and will just toss anything on a whim. They practically give away the stuff they do sell.
The others that were piled up in the bottom of the box. Some of the discs had fallen out of the cases and sleeves but they all seemed fine except for one: Half-Life GOTY disc got a few tiny fatal cracks. A lot of software and bargain bin games have been excluded.
There were two discs that go with two joysticks I have. I have a sidewinder somewhere but couldn't bother looking for it for the pic.

CD keys will be a problem for some of those. Were they on the paper sleeve, inside the jewel case, on a sticker in the manual? Who knows? Every publisher seems to have picked a spot at random and losing them makes old PC game collections a minefield of unplayable* discs.
* Without cracks or No-CD patches. Obligatory reminder that piracy = games preservation.
Games shared on the Archive frequently have a working CD key in their descriptions. If you've got a disc with no key, it's a perfect place to check first.

Seeing this reminds me that, when I moved out on my own back in the '00s my mom held onto EVERYTHING from my 80s-90s childhood and practically hermetically sealed it in my old room, except for things I'm actually nostalgic for.
Big box pc games and cartridges? Garbage. GI Joes and Star Wars figures and Legos? Sent to spoiled baby cousin. 500 lbs of worthless nonsport trading cards and water damaged comics? Just like you left them, honey!

Mom tossed out all my early 90s legos by mistake including all my older brother original 80s sets (including the train set).
I had two or three of the big pirate ships, the pirate castle with the soldiers and glow in the dark ghost, the space shuttle+launch pad, the marina with the red crane pieces that are super rare, the fucking awesome ice planet explorer dudes with the bright orange visors and antennas.
And...fuck me...this really hurts I had almost of the the undersea explorer series, the dudes with submarines and the shiny silver knives, coolest lego sets ever made.
I think this is why I dumpster dive. I'm still looking for them.

Mine didnt throw away my lego, they just dumped them all into one box.. then threw away the boxes and the manuals, which.. to me at least, was worse. I'd have prefered if the legos had been thrown away in addition to the boxes and manuals.

I was in a kinda similar position. Browse Lego sets of that time, a lot came back to me that way.
A lot of stuff happened after I left home. Ten years later came back to find my Mega Drive in a shed that had a rotted out floor and had sat in there for at least a decade of winters.

When I moved out of my parents house, I couldn't carry a bag of stuff so I left it to pick it up a few days later. Inside the bag was a Sega Genesis, my PS1, all the cables, and a bunch of games for both. I also left a plastic bag full of stuff to the local secondhand store. My mum wanted to take it to the store for me, so I made sure to tell her it's the plastic bag, not the other bag. Well, the other bag wasn't there a few days later. She'd gotten confused and brought the wrong bag.

I'm pretty sure the Lotus Clan had some corrupting/stealing mechanic that I abused, where I could take over enemy buildings and make my own version of their units. I remember turtling against the CPU players as being incredibly satisfying when I swept over them with their own units.
Might just be every RTS game where you can abuse economy in general when facing CPU players, but rolling across the map is always fun.

It had a tool-less door but a reversed internal layout, you open the right side panel (when looking from the front of the system)
there were tool-less releases for the HDD bays and disk drives, and it featured full-length brackets for add-in cards, with a sort of locking mechanism clamping over.
It also had this weird display on the top. you could play solitaire on it if you wanted.

I was near broke back then and agonised over most purchases, so natural selection favored the "best games", and I only kept the boxes/manuals for the best of those during various moves and storage purges. (I even have some older titles, like wasteland, and the Ultima series)
I think most of what I've got are things I uh..borrowed and never returned from my brother, friends, and brother in law or copies that were made at LAN parties. Or saved from said brother/brother in law/friends when they were looking to get rid of them.
As the older brother, I have lost many items to the void of my younger siblings. I had to pave the way, lol.
Thankfully my parents were divorced and I could hide the good stuff at my single moms house. ;)
So I still have the stuff I was too selfish to let them loose/break/keep forever.
See, I had to take em so the older sibling couldn't get rid of them lol like when he sold his entire Star Wars collection of figures and ships and creatures. I kept the AT-AT and Rancor since those were my favorite and I refused to let him sell them for pennies on the dollar.

Look for the ones that are run by a church or charity. They're less greedy and profit motivated. They get tons of retro professional music equipment from churches updating their media stuff.
This annoys me so much. Our culture became a weird mix of nostalgia-hoardy and desperation to make a quick buck because most jobs are next to worthless anymore.
Everything became a speculative scarcity-obsessed stock market good, and it sucks.
That's one thing I enjoy about digital stuff: All you need is one good hard copy in existence, and somebody can replicate and archive it for generations to come. "Piracy" really is preservation in this case.
I have seen 1980's Technics turntables in church thrift stores.
It's always been my dream to stumble on a beaten up 1200 turntable or a fixer upper Moog at a charity shop, but I think miracles like that stopped happening once all the normy resellers could just scan all the electronics with their phone and snatch up the good stuff.
Don't lose faith. I saw the turntable last December as it was being paid for. I was there minutes too late, but apparently it had been on the sales floor for weeks.

At least Starcraft II with Wings of Liberty campaign is free to play now. SC2 is still going, new patches still coming out, although with a relatively small community.
I should give it a try with the graphics turned way down. When I first played, there was so much flashy stuff on the screen that I couldn't see what mattered.

I remember buying Battlefield 2142 when it came out and owning it for years without ever playing it because I didn't realise it needed internet to even start up the game.

This makes me wish we had more church/charity thrifts in my area. The only one we have is where I got a DSi, a copy of Rollercoaster Tycoon and an expansion, and my copy of Oblivion GOTY. And, as far as I am aware, the rounding up to donate to Christian education isn't going towards controversial things, so I don't mind shopping there.
If you are looking for better deals, these types of places are better... until they either get bought out or some big yt thrift reseller finds the place and suddenly it's always full of people buying out everything in order to make a profit.

Can any of these be played as it today? I wonder if there is DRM that is obsolete.
The Half Life GOTYE can probably be installed and played no problem. The CD key is probably already bound to a Steam account, otherwise that'd be another way to play it and easily have all the updates.
Starcraft/Brood War and Warcraft are all still playable as far as I'm aware. ActiBlizz hadn't killed off old school Battlenet last I'd checked. Private servers are also still a thing for classic blizzard games. Same goes for C&C. Private servers a'plenty. PVPGN was still the thing for Blizz games (up to a certain patch because they changed some server side stuff) and Westwood Online games. There's also a separate project specifically for Red Alert games whose name escapes me. Also the OpenRA project.
The last flight sim I played was Red Baron II/3D, back in the Sierra Online and MPlayer days (pre GameSpy Arcade), but I'm familiar with IL2. Been a few years since I checked in on it but it had a fairly active player base and modding community. VFWs (Virtual Fighter Wings) were a thing in that and in Microprose's Falcon 4.0 where some players took it very seriously and were quite skilled at formation flying and such. I still have my copy of Falcon 4.0, 3 ring binder manual, map and all. Wasn't good at it but I was always amazed at how technical it was.
Baldur's Gate 2 should still run. Same for the original and Icewind Dale, if they're hiding in the box somewhere. I installed those from CD a while back and they worked fine.
I should probably try in my Deck next. Dollars to donuts I bet they'd work - I've installed other games on it from CD just for shiggles. Truth be told, Linux is probably preferable for a lot of older games since a lot of work has gone into wine/proton explicitly for compatibility. A lot of really old Windows games, that are unplayable on Windows today, run amazing on Linux.
Guild Wars: Factions can still be played, if the cd key hasn't been added to another account.
The Star Wars Galaxies cds can be used to get started with SWGEmu, too.

I went back yesterday and saw that some more games had been put some in their CD section. Recovered some discs that missing got several more games. Paid less than $5 (they charge a quarter per CD/DVD). So here's the total haul:
Aw, man I played the heck out of F.E.A.R. It was a great scary game, and the online multiplayer with all the modded maps was great. Wish the 2142 servers were still up. There was an attempt by a group to get the game running without EA’s servers, I tried to get it running but it didn’t work for me.

all that stuff IS trash. abandonware websites have been around since the late 90s. preservation is a cool ideal. i mean, collecting cartridges from retro systems is a just hobby because there's historical value in the games as physical objects and because you need the system to play them.
PC games? not so much, unless you're considering them as a complete product with the box and instruction manual and all that. those CD's aren't even going to work on a modern computer; you'll have to fiddle with dosbox or some emulator; so why not just have a digital copy?
this isn't preservation--it's mental illness justified with ideas of preservation; most of this haul are trash-worthy CD-R's with official artwork and a case.
