Working on my politics-free lemmy experience, what words should I add next?

Edit: some of you need to step outside and smell some fresh air, I promise it wont bite

Edit to the edit: this goes doubly for the people private messaging me their manifesto

I'm surprised there are any posts left with those filters.

95
reddthat.com

There's actually a good bunch of people posting wholesome entertaining posts if you filter out the noise

49
feddit.online

Also a lot of porn which ranges from legit ametuer to professional and possibly illegal. Like half of all posts when you sort by new is porn.

12
lemmy.world

.........there's only one porn I can think of which would be illegal, and if thats what you're seeing, report EVERY SINGLE BIT OF IT!!!

Spam the report button.

15
feddit.online

I've seen a couple of sketchy tinytitties posts that I made an anonymous tip for authorities to look into. I downvote them all but I don't report them because I'm 100% certain the mods would be aware if there is any illegal materials in the mix.

7

If it looks remotely like CSAM, report it. Mods don't always know whats posted, unless we get a report. I don't mod any porn communities, but I'm sure there's bickering in the communities I do mod that I never see.

OP made a post trying to figure out how to make his town less lame but also wants to avoid all "politics"... 😮‍💨

What if I told you that everything is "politics", be it buying groceries, entertainment, wearing clothes, healthcare, getting around town, having sex, owning a home or getting paid?

35

I sympathize with OP tbh. While babies being murdered is bad, I want SOME TIME in my life where I don't have to think about that for the sake of my own survival.

22

Politics affects more or less everything, but that doesn't mean it is those things. If you're not able to examine the list OP posted and see what proper subset of "everything" they're trying to filter out, you need to think harder.

6
sh.itjust.works

I can get behind virtually everything in that list, but pls explain the political influence in having sex

4
lemmy.world

You're trying to avoid politics by filtering keywords, yet your own thread title contains the word "politics". Curious.

28
DupaCyckireply
lemmy.world

That just means they won't be able to view their own post. Maybe it's not a bad idea.

I don't condone it but I might as well help as a mental exercise.

Ignorance causes many of the problems on this list in the first place, imo.

18

Fair. I get my news from different sources though, that's just not what I signed up to lemmy for

22
lemmy.radio

Curating one's feeds does not inherently lead to ignorance.

I've been aggressively filtering my newsfeed for years now and I didn't suddenly forget about all the corruption and injustice. I just have no need for those headlines to overwhelmingly dominate my day-to-day ingestion of news. "Corrupt Oligarch Continues Campaign Against Human Rights" isn't news to me; it's the status quo. I don't need a dozen headlines to remind me the sky is blue every day.

12

Everything is political. What you don't want to see is either controversy, or bad news. A lot of people call controversy and bad news political, and they're wrong. We all experience politics all the time, and it's quite tolerable, even fun, when the controversy and bad news is taken out.

I gave some suggestions on the top-level for political things you can remove that aren't controversial or bad news; Linux and Star Trek. If you don't want to remove those, then you should consider being more specific about what you don't like.

Tbh it can be a shitpost but I'm actually making the blocklist, good additions!

4

Good list, and I think I can just replace iranian with iran since the way boost works that counts for both

6
lemmy.world

If you need time away from these topics for mental health, then this is can be a good idea. I wish you all the best.

If you have other, quality news sources that's fine too.

If it's just because it's "annoying" and you do not want to engage, then bear in mind that you are simply burying your head in the sand. Politics are not simply words, and will affect you and your loved one's lives and rights.

The leopards come for everyone's faces eventually.

lemmy.world

No, they are not. You are underthinking it, and if your replies here are any indication, you enjoy underthinking.

0
reddthat.com

Oh no, trickdacy's mad I don't want politics on lemmy specifically, I better take a long, hard look at my life and think about what I've done 🥺

2
TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

I better take a long, hard look at my life and think about what I've done 🥺

We both know you won't start doing that

-1
TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

Sorry to disturb you with the idea of "politics" not being something one should hide from. It must mean something is wrong with me that I think that.

-1

Yeah I actually would argue it does OP had said they get their politics elsewhere, not on lemmy, and here you are doubling down that they're blocking out all politics in their life.

And even if that weren't the case, who cares? Mind your own business and let them do what they want, it's really not that hard

1
lemmus.org

Do you browse All frequently? When I browse my subscribed comms I don't see that much politics stuff. (I have a separate account for that, when I'm feeling more resilient than usual.)

9

Communities likes memes and lemmyshitpost have become thinly veiled American politics channels disguised as memes. It’s not just All.

8

This is a good idea, y'all acting like OP literally doesn't listen to news, they said they just don't want to get their news on lemmy.

And I agree, you guys are being dramatic AF

8
lemmy.world

If you don't want politics involved, just add the name of every country.

Also "migrant," (gets rid of immigrant too) "refuge," (gets rid of refugee) "asylum," "vaccine," "climate change," and "global warming."

Also with "Israel" and "Zionism" in your list, add "bomb," "missile," "dea" (for dead and death).

8

Palestine, ukraine, oil…. Idk. I think like the other person suggested, a different space. Politics…..is everywhere.

3
lemmy.world

must be nice being able to afford to not care about these things

7

Don’t forget a lot of media is “political”.

Mute “Star Wars”, “X-Men”, “Mark Ruffalo”, “Miles Morales”, Wolfenstein, Star Trek, Warhammer, Helldivers…

5

You can add plenty more, if you want no politics you need to evenly cover both political aisles because stuff will creep in that you didn't want anyway.

Democrats Dems GOP DNC Newsom AOC Iran Russia Trump Ivanka Melania FBI Kash Patel Don Donald Donnie Mar-a-lago DOJ Supreme Court Election Congress Senate Vote DoD Hegseth ICE immigrant Musk Elon Republican Epstein China Israel Gaza Palestine Palestinian Refugee BiBi Jew Aipac anti-Semitic Protest

3
feddit.org

No matter how much you add, some things will still slip through because people give their posts stupid titles

3

Here's something I do. I block specific communities, and some people for the extreme amount of rage baiting political bullshit.

My list was getting pretty long tell I started doing that.

Also I block specific websites so they don't show up like CNN. Keywords are a good start but on Voyager I have actively just blocked (or is it muted?) people/instances/communities that are rage baiting political shit.

Always remember though, it's a privilege to not be able to interact with politics. I do on my own terms for my own mental health. But avoiding it not good as politics is literally anything that humans do. I just refuse to let the toxic 24/7 news bullshit get to me. As I'm one of people they actively target for "existing".

Also I blocked YouTube website because its constantly just people uploading there videos to get more views.

3
lemmy.ca

Ignore the words. Use your time to go outside and grab a bunch of strangers to play softball or frisbee or something. That is the biggest thing that'll fuck up all the young fascist "tech bros".

3

Why would you filter out the ICE? They are amazing german trains, super fast and reliable. No Person has ever complained about them because they are amazing. Did i already mention how reliable and amazing they are?

And there is never a discussion about if they need more or less funding. So it's a completly unpolitical topic, because they are not only reliable but also amazing

7

Iranian-Canadian scientist

That explains a lot.

Compared with N. neonata, the other species in the genus, N. donaldtrumpi male genitalia structures are smaller

This is gold.

3
lemmy.ml

Lmao, what did you expect would happen? Obvious troll is obvious.

3

I'm having sooo little political content without any setup on my end, probably thanks to how my instance is configured

3

No such thing as anything "politics free". Also trying to make any consumption "politics free" is damming to what kind of person you are and not in a good way.

2

This is objectively correct. We are social mammals and everything we do is steeped in politics. We live in a social world and we navigate power, privilege, wealth and ideologies in everything we do - politics.

Believing you can go politics free just marks you as either naive or callous.

At least this is in a shitposting forum, the correct venue for such an idea.

6

Making the assumption that you are getting your news somewhere else, not just burying your head in the sand, what are some sources that you, or anyone else who takes this approach, using to stay informed?

1

*realizes what sub hes in...

i'll change my angry downvote to a disgruntled upvote

1
reddthat.com

I mean yes but there's not a lot of actual post titles with that I don't think it would do much

2

I honestly thing you should just use a different network.

Cozy.talk looks pretty adorable.

-1
lemmy.ml

So this isn't a shitpost? Mods should delete this then.

-2
lemmy.ml

For your filter to work, you’d have to add many other words. Politics is the distribution of political goods, including attention and significance. If you pay attention to something or think something is significant, that is politics. So for your filter to work, you’d have to filter out anything and everything that you pay attention to and think is significant.

I know it sounds absurd. You’re thinking I’m insane. You’re thinking there’s no way a sane human being believes lasagne bolognese is politics. You’re thinking my definition of politics is useless or absurd.

But let’s look at this closely. Again, politics is the distribution of political goods and our assessments of those distributions.

  • Are we not paying attention to lasagna bolognese right now instead of something else?
  • Are there not implications to a lasagna bolognese? Was that lasagna bolognese produced in a vacuum?
  • Was there not a distribution of labor involved in producing it?
  • Were there not political structures within which your lasagna bolognese was created?
  • If the killing of cows was involved, was there not a political decision to kill a cow?

Being aware that politics is everywhere means we can choose what to pay attention to and what to do. It’s fine to choose lasagna bolognese. It’s fine to choose what kind of life you want. We’re involved in politics even if we don’t know it. We’re already somewhat skilled at it.

I think you're just arguing semantics now, I'm here to see memes, not conflict. You're digging too deep into it for the sake of philosophy. While I can appreciate the angle I think I'm just going to continue receiving the memes, thanks

6

You seem to really value fun, and that is genuinely okay.

It probably seems as if I'm splitting hairs. It might also seems as if I'm interested in conflict (in the memes-conflict dicotomy you mentioned). Overall, it might seem as if I'm an armchair philosopher yelling at the clouds from my ivory tower.

The way I see it, I'm not making a point in that ivory tower. I'm not in the vacuum of philosophy for philosophy's sake. I actually think I'm doing the total opposite: what happens when we notice what we pay attention to, how the world affects us, and how we affect the world? In other words, what happens when we open our arms to the world instead of closing our eyes to it?

This is incredibly practical.

Every single choice that we make has consequences. It affects people nearby and around the world.

I'm not arguing for us to pretend to be perfect people, whatever that means. I'm arguing for noticing our place in this world and how we are connected to others. I'm arguing for expanding our perspective instead of narrowing it.

Even when we expand our perspective we can still choose memes and fun.

I do it. I'm like you in that sense.

The very small change is noticing that we are making choices and that choices are consequential.

2

Semiotics is the study of signs. It is an interdisciplinary field that examines what signs are, how they form sign systems, and how individuals use them to communicate meaning. Its main branches are syntactics, which addresses formal relations between signs; semantics, which addresses the relation between signs and their meanings; and pragmatics, which addresses the relation between signs and their users.

I wonder if memes are collections of signs with meanings in relation to each other and their users. I'm sure that's NOT the case tho.

0

It is for someone. For example, someone who dislikes the Americanization of Italian cuisine, or dislikes the spread of Italian-American/western culture in their country. Maybe someone from Sicily who feels like Sicilian culture is underrepresented when talking about Italian culture.

But yeah, my point is that just because it's not political for you doesn't mean it's never political. But if you want an online space where you only see ideas and culture you agree with, then you can absolutely do that.

You mean the meat-based dish? A product of an industry that relies on subjecting animals to cruel conditions while also frequently exploiting the labor of poor immigrants (including undocumented ones), while the bosses receive tax subsidies from the government?

But suppose I don't bring any of that up. Suppose you have a community that's just for recipies, and I post a comment under each recipie providing vegan substitutes. Suppose someone else starts replying to my comments suggesting ways to include more meat in recipies and starts cracking jokes about it. Is that political?
