Whistleblower drops 'largest ever' ICE leak to unmask agents: 'The last straw'

“It is a sign that people aren’t happy within the U.S. government, clearly. The shooting [of Good] was the last straw for many people," Dominick Skinner, ICE list founder, told The Beast.

Information included in the new leak includes around "1,800 on-the-ground agents and 150 supervisors. Early analysis by the organization suggests that around 80 per cent of the staff identified remain employed by DHS," according to The Beast.

Nice, let's dox them all, names of their family members, kids schools, SS#.

You know all the stuff THEY already have on us and are using it to kill us. No legal protections for criminals.

It's ok to Dox a Nazi.

Shouldn’t law enforcement information be public anyway? I didn’t know there were secret police in America.

165

I didn’t know there were secret police in America.

The masks and complete refusal to identify themselves didn't give that away?

134
lemmy.world

ICE isn't law enforcement, they don't have the legal rights to enforce laws.

Being an illegal immigrant is also not a crime, is a civil offense. Their law given abilities stop there.

Essentially everything they are doing right now is blatantly illegal. It's no different than an armed milita in that sense.

73
cynarreply
lemmy.world

Even as law enforcement, they have a level of rights to privacy, just like the rest of us. That is why badge numbers are used. They unambiguously identify them, without also spreading who their siblings are, and where their children go to school.

The lack of ANY identifying features for ICE "agents" is VERY telling.

34

I'm a public (state) employee. My name, title, and salary are posted publicly. I don't see why ICE agents shouldn't enjoy that same level of transparency.

39
reddthat.com

They do not have a right to privacy while they are on duty.

And there is no "right to privacy" in the USA for anyone.

23
lemmy.world

On paper, there is a right to privacy in the US in places where a reasonable person would have an expectation to privacy, which is codified into law.

The only place where everyone has an expectation to privacy (barring exigent circumstances) is bathrooms (porta-potties included), changing rooms, locker rooms, or anywhere else where people are expected to use the bathroom or change clothes.

There is an expectation to privacy for individuals on their own private property. I can spy on you in my house, but you can't spy on me in my house (peeping through someone's windows is a crime but me having a hidden camera in my living room is not).

However, when it comes to public officials conducting duties of their office, there is no expectation of privacy, even on their private property (though, due to the conflict of interest, this is unlikely to happen).

The only place where no one has any expectation to privacy is public property (like a park, post office, library, city bus, etc.) and private property which is open to the public (most businesses, malls, etc.).

In practice, you can't fart or jerk off without a corporation knowing about it.

13

In practice, you can't fart or jerk off without a corporation knowing about it.

I make sure they know about it!

2

On paper, there is a right to privacy in the US in places where a reasonable person would have an expectation to privacy, which is codified into law.

i'm unfamiliar with this

1

Citation missing.

Basic records of public employment in government are not invasions of privacy. FOIA applies.

3

F*** that. I'm a professor to public institution. My name salary and virtually everything else has to be public information.

These assholes should be required to be a lot more transparent than I am. I don't get to beat anybody and ship them off to a third world hellhole prison.

2
cynarreply
lemmy.world

I'm a major one for transparency. I will accept that a police or justice officer doing their job properly and reasonably, can still make enemies. A certain level of information security, of their private lives, is then reasonable to keep them and their families safe.

Their job life should be documented well however. If their body cam is not working, it should be assumed to hide something, until proven otherwise.

I also don't see the US's ICE as police or justice. They have shown none of the restraint and control expected of the role. They are armed thugs, with a powerful backer, and should be treated as such.

-1

I think you're 100% off base. We need as much transparency as humanly possible. You only see ice as a problem because it's a problem for you.

I know what a lot of black folks that are terrified of getting stopped by the police under any circumstances. Your categorizing them differently and for good reason but it's wildly misguided.

1
cynarreply
lemmy.world

FYI, I'm not American, I'm watching from the outside.

The UK police, while they have their issues, are a lot better than American police. A lot of them also love the bodycams. They make their job a LOT easier, with far less hassle.

1

Our police are considerably more dangerous than yours. And all they have to do is turn off their body cams.

Unfortunately we live in completely different realities. I believe your cops are actually trained.

2

It is public. To get around that, they pay Flock (or some similar company) to spy on us instead, then use our tax dollars to buy our data from those companies, then deny FOIA requests for our own data under the reasoning that it's their property since they bought it, and you can only FOIA records they collect, not property they purchase.

10

they were suppose to, but they made them not to carry thier IDs with them, and probably obfuscating the hiring process too. since they pratically hire anyone.

2

I personally believe that the kids should be left out of whatever repercussions their parents bring on since they themselves didn't get to choose their spawn point.

But any significant others of these ICE thugs should 100% have divorced their asses and rescinded access to their kids. Maybe should have even gotten restraining orders.

If not, they're complicit too.

8

It would be a shame if they were swatted. That sort of thing can cause serious trauma.

3
MortUSreply
lemmy.world

That's what they're hoping, and some radical targets them so they can shift blame.

-5
lemmy.world

As long as we don’t give them that opportunity then they won’t shift blame or spill blood egregiously, right? So let’s just never fight back and things will inevitably get better, right? They would never escalate without the left giving them reason to, right?

Fuck off with this.

12
MortUSreply
lemmy.world

Yeah, remember when Luigi really changed the world? No? How about Tyler Robinson?

Mass civil unrest is the only way.

If they are able to spin ICE assassins, they just as well could be able to drum up more support than civil unrest can match. They're already having a difficult time finding and retaining their coalition. We know they're going to decry the midterms. It is a war of attrition right now, and doxing ICE is just bait.

-6

They shouldn't be allowed to wear masks and they should have their badge numbers and name displayed on their uniform prominently because if they're not doing anything wrong they shouldn't have any reason to hide.

276
kboos1reply
lemmy.world

It's interesting that all other law enforcement have to identify themselves if they aren't undercover. So why is ICE the only agency that can or feel the need to hide their identities?

It's like they know they're doing something they shouldn't and are ashamed.

148

They know no shame, but they are absolute cowards. They are bullies who were given guns and freedom from legal consequences.

67

It's not shame. It's insurance. It's to make it difficult/impossible to file a complaint or win a criminal case in the event that the administration crumbles and someone tries to hold them accountable.

36

I feel like this isn't really a "gotcha", it pretty much says this on the tin - they don't want to identify themselves because they don't want to be held accountable for their actions.

The issue isn't that they're wearing masks, it's that a large portion of American Citizens believe that it's appropriate for them to do so. Transparency and accountability is the bedrock of democracy. How can the populace elect representatives if those representatives do not need to disclose their activities and no one can be held accountable.

12

The vast majority of cops will refuse to provide any identifying information. As long as the arresting officer complies, it holds up in court. Everyone else does whatever they want and waits to see if a lawyer cares enough to subpoena the department for all the bodycam footage they already conveniently destroyed.

ice isn't special in that regard. They just understand they have no intent of giving anyone they abduct a trial (because "they aren't citizens and have no rights").

Same with the constant escalation to pretend that everything is a riot or a swat raid where cops need to wear protective gear so that they don't teargas themselves and have to assume everyone is going to hunt them down after work and shoot them (and, for legal purposes, that would be a very illegal thing and thus bad).

Any chance you know Python, or maybe you can have ChatGPT write a script that uses bs4 to parse through each of the name hyperlinks in the html? A simple loop should be able to visit each page, cache the results on disk, and finish up eventually.

The link doesn’t work where I am, still.

1
lemmy.world

it's very slow for me. i'm looking into python and all the other stuff. if you one specifically that will scrap the whole site, i'm down to run it. any OS except mac i can use. i can't copy/paste each agent page, looking to scrap the whole site at once

edit!

i think i have it scraping it all to html files. it's taking time, just trying to make sure it gets the agents and incidents at least.

0

I see the edit, sweet!

I wouldn’t be able to write the script myself because I can’t load the site at all. So I can’t analyze the html and determine how to loop through it an extract all the additional links for scraping. Unless you want to send me the html. Then I can work with that, but without testing on the live site.

If you have something working though, great! Let’s just start there.

Check by opening one of the html files with your browser, or VSCode or something, and see if it has the data you were expecting.

1

Error 403, access forbidden. Feds really must not want anyone seeing this.

Those would be the Epstein Files. This is still nice to have out there, though. Governments should fear their people.

22

Yes and no.

Yes, there is a lot of value to staying in The System and trying to break it from within.

But when your day to day duties are to abduct and murder people? Yeah, I am sure John Smith is gonna LOVE that you were a rascal and actually put him in the system as "Johm Snith" so that his lawyers have good cause to declare the arrest void. Except... he has no lawyers because John got executed last week. And now nobody will ever find out which ditch his corpse might be in.

And that is the problem when you get to these paramilitary orgs. Mad props to the whistleblower for acting now. How many people did they hurt along the way? And how effective will this even be when the christofacists still rule this country?

To be clear. If there is absolutely nothing else you can do, then yeah, resist through weaponized incompetence and all that. But... just understand that you might be rightfully tried as a collaborator regardless of how slow you were at changing those tires.

And another third are oblivious to anything that doesn't directly and specifically impact their lives right now.

2

Fuck normalcy. Normalcy is how we got here. Neolib capitalism is exactly why we are here. Fascism is often described as imperialism turning inwards. And I get it, compared to this insanity, "normal" looks amazing. But if/when this fascist movement fails, the corporate elite will milk that line of reasoning so fucking hard.

And even if you don't think socialism is a good idea, we at least need SOLID social democracy. Green new deal IMMEDIATELY, universal basic services (water, basic food, internet, heating,...), reduced government overreach into citizens' personal lives, massive taxes on the rich.

The establishment dems are going to champion a return to "normal" so incredibly fervently. We cannot let them suck us back into it. The climate can't take it, the global south absolutely is done with it, the average working class American cannot handle it. We need solid change.

It won't matter, MAGA is a classic Cult of Personality, and when he finally assumes room temperature, they will destroy themselves trying to be the successor. Besides the usual suspects, I just heard even Bannon intends to run in 2028.

They'll eventually be undone by their own virtuosic incompetence. The only problem is the damage they'll do along the way.

24
sh.itjust.works

MAGA may crumble but the issues that created it will still fester and lead to something similar until the people actually get some representation in government.

I've read this exact same prediction after Bush left office and the same after Trump left the first time and here we are again. People always allow themselves to be roped back into believing Republican false promises after four or eight years of hearing the same false promises from Democrats. Neither party is going anywhere until we make new parties comprised of people actually willing to govern for the people, but both Democrats and Republicans want you to belive that they are your only option.

14
lemmy.today

Valid. After the Bush era, I said that if we didn't make them pay for their abuse,.corruption,.and negligence, the next bunch will be worse, and we got Trump.

It's not enough to just let MAGA die, we have to crush it, and actively purge it from our government and our society. It has to be treated like Nazis or the KKK - despised, humiliated, and prohibited.
