What client do you use for Lemmy?

Honesty, I am tired of accidentally hitting "back" on my phone and having my feed reset, so I was wondering if any of your clients didn't do that, while also wanting to check out the competition for Sync.

+1 for Voyager. It's my first and so far only client that I've used, having been on infinity for reddit before switching.

I like it. it's smooth, works well, and has fairly granular settings for how to handle "read" posts, gesture controls within posts / comments, and so on.

do you have issues with redgifs? they don't work for me on Voyager

5

I don't have issues with redgifs. I thought I recalled a setting similar to media player defaults but I can't find it, so I must've been thinking of infinity for reddit.

does it have anything to do with default browser, I wonder? I'm on grapheneOS with vanadium as my browser.

No love for Summit here? I've tried almost every android app and ended up with this one. Very smooth UI and full of features.

30

I swapped from Sync to Summit and have been loving it. The dev's super responsive too, which is a big plus.

8

I came here to say this too, I use voyager but just recently I learned about summit which has fully community moderation abilities

3

It's not smooth at all, IMO. Lots of visual annoyances which makes it feel stuttery and just bad. Been a Sync user for years and going from that to any other app is just a bad experience... I try all lemmy apps I come across and they either just look bad, no matter how much I change settings or they lack several major things that I just won't be without. None has come close to feeling like a replacement yet, and it really sucks that it seems Sync is actually dead now.

1

Boost

Called "Boost for Lemmy". It's great. All kinds of custom options. Integration with instances are really good.

Try it.... give a dollar... It'll be Ad free.

26

I used boost for reddit back when that was a thing. The dev got the lemmy up in like a week, very impressive to me. I give $5 every now and then when I feel like it and remember. I'd recommend the app for sure

The dev being alone does not mean they should make it closed source.

For example, Mindustry, which is an open source game, is only developed by one person, Anuke.

And, who knows tf they doing behind the scenes?

That's why i HATE anything closed-source. Making a software open-source does not have any downsides, it's free contributions from more experienced people. And it also means people can fork your project if you just can't do it anymore. Or want to improve it.

-2

it's not as easy to monetize open-source software, and even solo devs gotta eat.

until UBI gets implemented worldwide, expect people to continue wanting monetary returns on their work.

13

Meh, I've used his app for many years now from when it was for the other shit site.

From my experience trying other apps. Boost is best. I'll take top quality v. whiny wanker.

Simple Mobile Tools were open source and made by a single dev and then he decided to sell everything to a shady company.

3

Only issue is embed videos don't work rn, I'm currently trying out summit and really like it so far, pressing back does reset your feed to the top though, which is annoying

Yup. I use the PWA so I don't even need to install it. Wish this was more widespread.

Thunder. Cross platform, great UI, and now has piefed support.

21

I've used Jerboa for years now, and have the press back twice to exit setting enabled:

My configuration for it is very minimal, to mimic RedReader that I used to use.

19

Connect.

I actually want the opposite of what you want. I am used to Jerboa and Liftoff refreshing the front page if you hit back on the main feed. Connect just asks it you want to close it and I have to manually scroll back up to the top to refresh, and its annoying af when I'm hella far down the page.

15
lemmy.world

Scroll down slightly in the feed, hit the ellipses that appears on top and choose refresh? This is how I do it with Connect.

Connect looks awesome, but I can't for the life of me find a feed for only my subbed communities, Do you know if that is an option?

3

There must be another setting that controls when the top bar with those dots actually shows up, because that's why I have to scroll all the way back up; that bar doesnt move or stay at the top of my screen but literally at the top of the page. Scrolling down one post makes it completely disappear until I go all the way back up.

Connect for lemmy,

Back button asks if you want to exit the app

Looks just like RIF

"Looks just like RIF"

I seriously don't understand how that's a positive. RIF always looked and felt like it was badly designed on purpose. Like some shitty thing from the early 2000s. But seeing the shit people do with theming on their phones and other stuff it's weirdly not surprising, still doesn't make sense. It's actually vile looking.

2

Remember that some really like old reddit for some reason.

While I sort of get it on the desktop, I really not get it on the phone.

1

I liked Rif and I like this. I'm an old man who has my text messages zoomed in and my wife laughs at me

1

You know what's nice, we have sooooo many more options than we deserve. Thanks all you devs!

Reddit has one official one that kinda sucks.

I second that! It’s great. I tried a few different ones at the start, then tried Mlem and never looked back.

3

I completely agree! I guess there are more people on Lemmy using android than iOS. It’s a bit more in line with the ethos I guess? And Mlem is only iOS.

I used to be android as well, but honestly I won’t ever go back I don’t think. But to each there own

Voyager

Has sync been updated lately? I left sync because the dev fell off the face of the earth or so it seems but I really miss the long hold to view images.

8

Nope, still on the March 26th, 2024 version. It works for me though.

Fun fact. If you search up reddit on android bar sync comes up.

2

The app is just called sync what used to be Sync for Lemmy. It still says sync for Lemmy on the play store, I'm not sure if that hasn't been updated or it's the official name still.

1

Firefox

The less apps I have on my phone the better and I mostly browse Lemmy on desktop anyway.

I been using Voyager so have felt the back button pain a lot. I installed Blorp just recently but an update seems to have broke it, it's not working for me today.

I just installed Jerboa, there's no back button.

8
RmDebArc_5reply
piefed.zip

Btw the Blorp issue should be resolved (check if your running 1.9.16)

2

Jerboa gives you a confirmation prompt before exiting, when you press back from the main feed.

8

It’s how crazy a good UI never gets old. I was using Apollo, now Voyager. Holy cow. It’s been so long I feel old.

5

Eternity was the one I settled on.

Used jerboa, liftoff, thunder and a few other to name a few.

4

I recently switched to Blorp. It’s still somewhat early in development, but overall is really nice.

3

I use connect. It also has a function where you can hit twice to exit.

2
lemmy.zip

I've been trying to find a sync replacement as well, but nothing can quite give me what I want from the interface. Double tap to zoom (also double tap with hold and swipe to zoom in and out would be a plus), zoom on gifs and videos, single tap (or swipe) to dismiss pic or video, and a deep limit on how far you can zoom in. Oh and swipe gestures to upvote and return to the main page.

Thunder comes closest but there's no zoom on videos.

2

My gripe is no other app than Sync allows me to easily change instance to see posts only from that instance. At least it used to, the button stopped working for me a while ago

2

Wefwef was the original name for Voyager. If it’s still named that, it simply means you’re using the browser-based PWA instead of the actual App Store app. Not a huge difference between the two, except that the PWA isn’t technically “installed” on your phone in the traditional sense.
