TIL that in 1952 Adidas bought the rights to the "three stripes" from a Finnish sportswear manufacturer called Karhu for two bottles of whiskey and the equivalent of €1,600.
View original on feddit.ukCustomer called earlier today about a potential job - I told them I'm free on monday
After the phone call, I logged back into DayZ and continued gaming in my underwear while enjoying my 7th coffee.
Built a partition to separate two rooms
Edit: How come post about a partition I did in 3 days outperforms a post about bathroom remodel I worked at for 2 months, lol.
After caferul consideration I've come to the conclusion that bubble levels should have adjustment screw for calibration
I just bought a new 60 cm bubble level from a relatively reputable brand - Empire - and I had to go through six of them in the store before I found one that was accurate. I own three longer ones, two of which have been miscalibrated since the day I got them. The third one would have been as well, but luckily I checked it before buying.
It would be so easy to just add a small adjustment screw for calibration. I don’t understand why they don’t do that. Even the more expensive ones I’ve seen don’t have one. I’ve developed serious trust issues because of this.
Also, in case you didn’t know, you can check the accuracy by rotating the level 180 degrees and seeing whether the bubble stays in the same place.
What are you lying to yourself about?
Something, that if you found out the actual truth about, you'd feel like you knew all along but didn't just want to accept it?
No politics please.
Multiple times a week I eat my lunch on the floor of a complete stranger's apartment
In the summer time I try and get more creative and when ever possible I'll climb onto a roof or go by the water for example.
Except when I'm working for this one particular elderly couple. I don't even pack my lunch because they always cook for me.
Edit: Done
I did a complete bathroom remodel
I'm a self-employed contractor and this was the biggest job I've done so far. I guess this still counts as DIY since I did it all by myself? (except for the electric)
Tried to carefully install the faucet immediately after gluing and caulking the sink
Tried to
I didn't go to work today
I'm a self-employed contractor - been at it for almost 2 years now. Yesterday, a customer told me today was a national holiday, so I said, guess I'm taking the day off then.
Now I'm at home under a heated blanket, sipping coffee and watching YouTube videos. I still get this nagging feeling like I should call someone to say I'm not coming to work or something. It hasn't quite sunk in that I'm my own boss.
It just feels like I got laid off 2 years ago and never went back to work. Sure, I've been working the whole time, but it doesn't feel like it.
Made a plywood stand for my vacuum
I even painted the cut ends as I happened to have a can of matching color.
I revived a completely dried up paint brush with pine oil soap
It was just a cheap single-use brush I was gonna toss anyway, but I remembered seeing a YouTube video from seejanedrill about using oil-based soap to clean brushes, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I let it soak overnight in a plastic bag with undiluted pine soap, then cleaned it this morning with a stiff brush. Yesterday it was rock solid - now it's perfectly soft, like new.
YSK that electric blankets are cheap and incredibly cozy
Words cannot describe how good it feels to wrap yourself into one of these when you're cold.
I heat my house with just a heatpump but it can't quite keep up when it gets well below 10 degrees celcius and I'm too cheap to turn on electric radiators. I bought an electric blanket for 22 euros and I just heat that instead. Even just sitting on it makes a huge difference.
What content filters are you using to clean up your Lemmy feed?
In my personal opinion, this site is completely unusable without heavy content filtering. Just being picky about which communities to follow and users to block isn't enough.
That said, I realize I might be in the minority on this, so I'm curious what others are doing to preserve their sanity.
Finnish authorities seize vessel following sea cable disruption
Elisa's data cable between Helsinki and Tallinn was damaged on Wednesday, according to the Finnish telecom firm.
According to a police statement, the Border Guard located a vessel suspected of causing the damage. Finnish authorities took control of the ship as part of a joint operation.
The suspected vessel was intercepted by the Border Guard patrol ship Turva and a helicopter in Finland's exclusive economic zone, while the cable damage reported by Elisa is located in Estonia's economic zone.
The police have consulted the National Prosecutor's Office, which has issued a prosecution order.
Police are investigating the incident as aggravated criminal damage, attempted aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with telecommunications.
Last Christmas, an oil tanker called Eagle S dragged its anchor along the seabed, damaging several undersea cables between Finland and Estonia. The captain of the vessel claimed the incident was accidental.
Following a trial this past autumn, Helsinki District Court said it lacked jurisdiction in the case.
At 1:00pm on Wednesday, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in a post on social site X that the country "is prepared for security challenges of various kinds, and we respond to them as necessary.

Also just curious about your deeply held principles in general.
No political grandstanding please.
TIL that in the early 20th century there were clubs for fat men. You had to be over 200 lbs to join, pay one dollar for membership, and learn a secret handshake and a password.
They held meetings twice a year, and members were informed well in advance so they had time to stuff themselves, as public weigh-ins were a big part of these.
"We're fat and we're making the most of it" was their mantra.
"I've got to be good-natured; I can't fight and I can't run" was their motto.
Which one of your views gets you labeled as "the other"?
Broadly speaking, you probably agree with the large majority of the views commonly attributed to whichever group you identify with - what are the exceptions? Something that if you mention without a caveat immediately makes people jump to conclusions or even attack you?
