To all the new(er) Reddit refugees!

Best I can say is that you have your local server, which is the server you originally signed up in. You then have all the rest of the connected (federated) servers that can see what you say.

Each server is its own mini-lemmy, so it is broken down into communities just like subreddits. Each has its own server administrators and each community has its own moderators.

Regarding content delivery, it seems to be about the same process: a link, image, video, or text from a certain community. The responses are similarly threaded with buttons for interaction.

The largest differences I have seen are that each server instance can have duplicate communities. Different servers have different tolerances for communities. In extreme cases, whole servers can be blocked (defederated) from your server. This is usually due to unwanted behavior from the users that is not curbed by the moderators or extreme communities that cause hardship for other users.

This is what I got after about a week of lurking. If I'm not correct, please let me know.

The real cost of an inkjet is that one needs to buy ink regardless of whether they print. It tends to dry out over a few months. If you don't happen to use all the 100-200 pages, the money is wasted.

In the past, just because the printer was on sale, I have been able to buy a cheap printer for less than new ink.

I bought a brother a couple of years ago for just under $200. That was the cost of 4 sets of ink. I have replaced the toner a couple of times at $17 each. Each replacement has lasted me a few thousand pages.

This was a replacement to a pair of brother printers of the same model I obtained via yard sale for a total cost of $10. These yard sale printers would have lasted longer if not for small children and dogs.

I have probably printed 6k pages for the cost of $180 over the course of several years. Most of the printing has been school work for kids and forms in general.

What everyone thinks of "Meta's" Threads and other instances preparing to defederating from them?

I can't see it being healthy for us in the long term.

Meta will only make decisions to increase profits. They have demonstrated this time and again be taking advantage of elections, the pandemic, and poor leadership to spread hate and misunderstood - this drives user engagement.

Meta cannot stand to have this content where they cannot get to it easily. They feel they they must have this content in order to show growth.

Their only obligation is to provide growth to their shareholders. This means that they do not need to play fair. They will want to control the platform. As femboy link pointed out, this did not go well for XMPP working with Google and Microsoft did not play well with Open Office.

The end game for this offer is that there is only a Metaverse where Meta-approved conversations happen. I would sooner create an OSS Facebook alternative where you federate with those you wish than allow Meta into our domain.

Spoilers are broken for me, so just

Spoiler alert

The whole pretext was out of order compared to the LN. I'm okay with it because the story is in a different format and may change with the retelling.

Originally Rudy meets Fitz, who you totally believe is Sylphie in about 30s but isn't confirmed in quite a while. I felt like I was arguing with the author to tell me it was her for quite some time.

Discussion: Trigun Stampede. Anyone watched the Trigun reboot? What did you think about it?

Spoilers: I liked the more serious tone. This was a tragedy. We weren't learning about Vash, this is Knives' story. Regards, I was feeling a little strained waiting for a bit of physical humor.

I had an issue with the animation at first. Something about it hit the uncanny valley for me. It wasn't that it wasn't realistic, it was TOO realistic but either the frame rate or the motion just was a bit off. I was having serious flashbacks to Knights of Sidonia.

I'll agree that the characters were a bit flat. A bit more humor could have made it more dynamic. Maybe it was lost in translation, or maybe the direction was to keep it serious.

What I loved was the amount of exposition explaining where they were, who Vash, Knives, and Wolfwood were. I appreciated getting some understanding of the tech and the plants.

I have no opinion about the music. It made no impression on me.
