A.I.’s Use in Elections Sets Off a Scramble for Guardrails (article from 25.06.2023)
In Toronto, a candidate in this week’s mayoral election who vows to clear homeless encampments released a set of campaign promises illustrated by artificial intelligence, including fake dystopian images of people camped out on a downtown street and a fabricated image of tents set up in a park. In New Zealand, a political party posted a realistic-looking rendering on Instagram of fake robbers rampaging through a jewelry shop. In Chicago, the runner-up in the mayoral vote in April complained that a Twitter account masquerading as a news outlet had used A.I. to clone his voice in a way that suggested he condoned police brutality. What began a few months ago as a slow drip of fund-raising emails and promotional images composed by A.I. for political campaigns has turned into a steady stream of campaign materials created by the technology, rewriting the political playbook for democratic elections around the world.
Nothing will change unless there is a well understood threat to the common person. I'm not sure if it is the best answer, but the only way I can think to do this is to use AI to target the most vocal people possible.
I agree with picking on these phases. Common person here refers to the average individual. I am exposed to a lot of tech and while I understand AI I don't know if I can spot a good fake. Outside tech circles I can't imagine people understand the concern very well. Targeting the rich and famous could certainly put pressure to change and spread information.
Before nfts became a thing i hoped we could integrate the blockchain into media recording devices to track authentic footage over the internet. I still think its a good idea that can adress this. Of course fake media wont dissapear over night but if footage is real and shared from a credible source. a logo in the corner can link you to the original author and all verified information.
If someone shares media without it it would raise similar skepticism as seeing a hhtp no s url does now for most people. “Maybe its legit but we cant be sure”
