Full circle

For those asking / pronouncing this has to be satire, perhaps. But not for long. AI is still not making a profit. So whatever it costs today at the growth-at-all-costs subsidized rate, think how much more expensive it will be when investors start insisting on profit after market consolidation*.

Because if you think there is a competitive barrier to entry for smartphones, operating systems, CPUs, and streaming services, you ain't seen NOTHING yet

Washing machine drums make really good fire pits

Reply in thread

I'd imagine even "low quality" stainless steel will hold up pretty well. And it has to at least have enough carbon in it to avoid rusting from all the water.

But WHOA BOYEEE it gonna get HOT!!! Not a bad thing per say, but as pictured there's nothing to prevent against an accidental leg brush. My firepit has a ring/lip around it that if you walk by you'll hit it first before the MUCH hotter body of the bowl itself. I feel like this needs something for a little protection. Even just a ring of very large rocks as a way to keep people away from walking too close.

'Where ambition goes to die': These tech workers flocked to Austin during the pandemic. Now they're desperate to get out.

It is not possible to explain the horribleness that is Austin road planning and the complete and utter lack of available transit. Exhibit 1 https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2020/2/27/a-75-billion-boondoggle-advances-in-austin

Just consider what it must mean for an average Californian to say traffic is bad. These aren't people coming from rural Montana complaining about city traffic.

5:01 and Done: No One Wants to Schmooze After Work

ITT: I don't want to ever socialize with my co-workers Also: How do you make friends as an adult?

Look I'm not a huge fan of forced socialization myself. I HATE small talk. I'm looking for the door before I have the first drink in my hand at "networking events". But I also know one of the biggest opportunities I have to meet new people as an adult is at at work. So I choose the situation carefully to make sure it's one I'm comfortable with and I give it a go. I've made a few lasting friends, people I play soccer with, people I invite over my house, people who my other friends got tight with, and over all growing my social group. A number of them don't even work for the same company anymore, or in my immediate office at least.

I'm not saying to do anything you don't want to do, and forced fun can suck, but if you DO want to meet people in life and make friends, don't force-limit your opportunities to interact with new people. Pick, or even suggest!, the situation that works for you.

What's the evolutionary advantage of very long hair on human heads?

Reply in thread

At some point, something lead to a mutation that turned curly hair into straight hair, and that seems to have been selected for in populations living in colder climates. But that doesn’t mean it increased chances of survival. Maybe it was just preferred by sexual partners for some reason, which may even have been cultural at that point.

Perhaps the hair change was the result of some other gene expression that was beneficial while the hair change itself was neutral-ish.
