DISTURBED's Belgian Show Cancelled Over DAVID DRAIMAN's Photo Signing IDF Missiles

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. The mayor of Vorst, Belgium, has officially banned an upcoming Disturbed concert, citing public safety concerns stemming from frontman David Draiman’s outspoken support for the Israeli army – namely that one picture where he's signing missiles that'll kill people shortly thereafter.

Disturbed was scheduled to play Vorst Nationaal on Wednesday, October 15, but the plug has now been pulled following a police order issued by Mayor Charles Spapens (PS) according to De Standaard.

Past tense is important.

They made maybe one or two decent albums in the 90s, and then faded into obscurity.

"Decent" is also a matter of taste.

They were very angsty when angsty music was popular. Now they're just old guys trying to hard to connect with a scene that is far too young for their music to be relevant for.

It barely mattered when it was released, but looking at everything else that was released in the 90s in similar genres, there was a lot of anger and angst that those Gen Xers were expressing that resonated with the early millennials, myself included.

Meh, many legendary bands don't actually perform well and/or arent 'good' individually.

I've been so fucking lucky in my music choice so far. Iced Earth was a real close miss, it's my favorite genre but I never got into them.

6

Oh god damn it, what did Iced Earth do?

e: guitarist was one of the Jan 6 rioters

4

I'll torrent it, won't stream it even on pirated YouTube (still counts as views)

I lost all respect after they released the steaming pile of shit that was the cover of Sound of Silence.

Look, I'm not going to support his recent actions, but imo that's one of the best covers ever done. I legit prefer it to the original.

It turns out, he was down with the sickness all along

It also turns out they must think "The Guy" is actually the bad guy.

9

https://disturbed.fandom.com/wiki/The_Guy

The Guy is the mascot of Disturbed. He has appeared in several albums as the “cloaked character” on the cover art, and in music videos as the "hero" that ends up defeating large corporations or armies alone.

A character consistently depicted as going against the rich and powerful commanding the media and armies to provide some semblance of justice and liberty to the masses... And the front man was all in on the IDF operations at least as late as second half of 2024. I might have seen it in October of 2023 when some might have assumed the IDF were going to be surgical, but indiscriminate bombing and famine inducing siege had already happened by summer of 2024...

I could maybe even give him the benefit of the doubt that he was in a bubble and oblivious to the wider issues, but after being booed and called on by the media to examine the situation closer to comment, he double downed at a point that should have been eye opening.

Would you go so far as to say you were disturbed when you learned of his support for genocide?

69

Even if I didn't know the context, someone signing an instrument of war and killing is just weird. To put it mildly.

42
sopuli.xyz

If those hit the people they were addressing, sure. But in reality, both those bombs, if they actually hit someone, probably killed poor schmucks just trying to make their way through life.

37

Duh lol. It was the keyboard warrior position that had planes and bombs to back it up. And a morale booster, reminder of why you're dropping them.

Writing on a bomb that's about to blow up innocent civilians during a genocide is absolutely weird though.

Another Kanye.

Why I never invest in celebrities because at anytime they can make a heel turn.

41

Almost accurate. It's often not that they made a heel-turn but that you (we) simply don't know them well enough.
Many have been shitbags all along and we didn't have enough information.

Never worship celebrities.

2

They have never sang anything I can't delete without missing a thing.

I have all Chris browns songs shared, but they whisper "Fuck Chris Brown" over the song LMAO. Maybe I'll do the same here. Get hundreds of thousands of copies out there.

Back when Napster was a thing, I shared "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park and after the lyrics "I have nothing to say" all the vocals were removed by a shitty winamp plugin. Kid me thought that was hilarious.

2

I grew up with Napster, you may be happy to hear it pretty much still exists as SoulSeek.

Use nicotine+, it's a better client. I share 30TB of movies/music/tv on there.

The guy defended himself by saying he wrote "fuck Hamas" on it. Is he really that delusional? Anyways removed all their songs from my lists and blocked them.

26

I don't think they care, it is for my peace of mind really. Each time I listen to one of their songs I will be bothered by what an asshole he turned out to be.

8
lemmy.world

Even if he wasn't pro genocide, which is obviously revolting enough, the act of signing any missile or something meant to kill / maim is cringe as fuck anyway. Why even pursue doing that at all?? There's so many ways to promote your brand/label/views without literally signing something used directly to cause death. Whole thing is fucking stupid and gross.

They are religious, Zionists believe God is on their side, I see it sort of like a form of prayer. People have written on their weapons for centuries.

3

zionism does not imply they are religious.
Some of the worst zionists are atheists or US 'christians'

There's a gargantuan difference between naming a weapon you're using yourself and doing some performative shit and signing a bomb that you'll never see the repercussions of. At least there's a bit of logic behind soldiers naming their swords or guns because those items are directly responsible for their own survival in a shitty situation they may or may not have directly volunteered for. My agreement or disagreement with that entirely separate subject aside: Fuck any wannabe badass who does shit like this thinking it's some sort of flex. Murdering someone over political or religious reasons is fucking stupid every day of the god damned year. Period. Full fucking stop.

4

I agree, I'm not saying it's a cool thing, just that it's been done forever. Like the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were signed and written on.

2

....by soldiers. Which is still dumb but more understandable than a celebrity.

2

Uh, I don't want to defend him, but are you really asking why a metal band would want to be seen with tools of death? Really? Are we talking about the same genre of music?

I mostly enjoyed them as a teenager. The only song really left in my rotation was their sound of silence cover.

It's like if Rage Against the Machine were actually very much on the side of the machine.

24

Their old Deify song is very on point now. Dude could've became the voice of despise about the current admin, but instead he got one (1.0, single, singular, SOLE, O N L Y) strong political opinion and it is that one. What the fuck.

They are missiles in the sense of being flying projectiles but those look like 155 howitzer ammunition.

Still shitty but you'd think someone would check accuracy.

Ed: definitely are, that white writing tells you everything you need to know. They are Israeli 155.

4

It’s not the most important distinction, but I do agree that we gotta be smarter than that. Maybe we just teach people the word “munitions” and move on.

4

Dude has always been an edgelord in some capacity. He probably thought it would be edgey to sign a bomb, regardless of who made it and who it would kill.

Though, I have zero doubts that David also has some questionable viewpoints on that stuff as well. I'm not aware of any, but I also haven't really heard anything from that band since the late 90s/early 2000s.

Good job getting cancelled buddy. Enjoy obscurity.

10

He's a hardcore Zionist who is openly outspoken in favor of Israel so this is more than just a bit of edge.

14

Some months (years?) ago there was a disturbed meme and people were saying he would love it, that's he's such a funny and all around great guy.

Now it seems lot of people knew he was a fascist all along.

6

Looks like the only 2 CDs of them I have are gonna stay the only 2 I will ever own.

6

I don't get how their cover of Sound of Silence is a top video on Conans Youtube channel. It's not that good.

4

Grotty. Guy probs got divorced because she didn't understand the literal extent of the band's name when marrying him and thought those tendancies were fixable.

Earlier this year, he divorced his wife of 12 years, Lena, and his dog, Gabriel, died.

There's got to have been a better way to write this...

Kept reading and

As for rising antisemitism, Draiman is equally concerned. “How can you not be worried about it?” he says.

For real for real.

Referring to some Democrat politicians, he says: “They pretend to represent everyone when they don’t. It’s very scary how they keep on stirring the pot of antisemitism on a daily basis, ...”

Hard agree. I don't follow American poli too closely, but your Democrats sound super conservative.

under the guise of being social justice warriors, with no repercussions.”

?????

3

As an American his very first statement is suspicious. The second statement basically proves he's too far right. The last statement is naked maga. Obviously these are American shibboleths so it makes sense not to immediately get what he's about.

For example, our conservative Democrats (neoliberal subset) are not the ones that are speaking out against the Israeli genocide of Palestine. The "antisemitic" politicians are more leftist. Maybe not left by classic European standards, but left by modern European standards.

But also, we have a long history of people hating Jews. We had people marching against "Jews replacing white people." Jewish space lasers! Soros!! People fucking HATE Jews. I won't even bother saying what party they are attracted to. I'll leave it as an exercise for the non-American reader.

But... that's not being played right now. Our fascists are saving the "anti Jews" card. We hate Mexicans right now. If an American says "antisemitism is on the rise" I'd strongly suspect they are simply pro Israel.

4

Am i the only one disturbed by the fact that he is clearly signing 155mm artillery shells and not missiles, like the claim in the headline??? Like i get that people like to rage about shit but at least get the point right.

-5

Yes, you are.

The point, that you ironically got wrong, is that he is signing munitions being used by a genocidal military force and that lost his band a gig.

11

To me it raises questions. Seems I'll have to do some research about it. As one should do always because truth and context matter with these things.

Here's the definition of a missile in case you're confused.

An object or weapon that is fired, thrown, dropped, or otherwise projected at a target; a projectile.

0

noun noun: missile; plural noun: missiles

a self-propelled weapon that carries an explosive warhead and is directed by remote control or internal equipment, launched from the ground or by an aircraft or submarine.

Ikereply

Go argue with Merriam Webster over it... not me.

1

I don't know what you think the point of the post is but it isn't about the distinction between artillery shells and missiles

0

It's kind of ironic too because missiles would be more accurate than firing artillery shells into a concentration camp.
