I created a Lemmy instance and the future of this community.

I've created a new Lemmy instance at dullsters.net

When I created this community several months ago I had no aspirations of it becoming much of anything. In a short amount of time it has grown to over 1500 subscribers and is one of the top recommended non-political communities. I am always looking forward to the posts that are shared here, and the unique culture being developed.

I see the importance of the decentralized aspect of the Fediverse. We frequently see drama surrounding moderation and federation policies. None of that applies to the content in this community.

I have no qualms with admins running their site the way they want to and they are often placed in difficult positions. However, this is one of the true places of neutrality on the Fediverse and it should remain that way.

In the few months this community has existed there have been maybe a half dozen moderation actions taken. You have remained, for the most part, very dull, and I thank you for that.

The name of the community should be changed, I hadn't realized that dull men's club was the result of someone else's ideas and work. The new name should represent this community that you all have created and the place it exists, The Fediverse.

The new instance won't have any users except for the purpose of moderation, you will still use your account from a federated instance. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the site, it should be done whenever I get around to it.

In the meantime suggestions for the new name should be made in a top level comment so that they can be voted on.

Thank you all once again for making this community what it is.

I painted my ceiling today

Painted it white. Two coats. I was sweating a lot due to the heat, and my hand cramped a few times.

I have 800ml of white paint left over and now I'm looking to use it elsewhere

Edit: Okay I just gave the kitchen a second coat (it needed one from months back), and then used the remaining on the room again. I've finished all the paint!

I lost my friend

Apologies if this could be against rule 1. I don't think so personally but feel free to remove if mod thinks so.

So, I lost my friend. He was a good friend and knew levels of me really well that possibly nobody does. But this is not a mourning post.

Aside from the tragedy, it's dull (as insensitive as this might sound). Looking and finding new contacts is a huge challenge filled with a lot of setbacks. Lots of work, I am certain most of you will understand.

So life just got a lot duller.

Edit: thank you for the empathy.

Edit: apologies if I am not thanking everyone separately, I do read all of them. It is very supportive and heartwarming and possibly one of the best moments in responses for me since the beginning of the public internet (not exaggerating, I do remember)

I just got fork truck certification at work.

I'm officially one of the chosen elite that has been entrusted by the powers that be to operate a very expensive and very dangerous fork truck at work.

I was actually bothing by supervisors about it for a while. I work the night shift at a very high tech CNC shop and no one else is certified on this shift. We dont need it often but sometimes heavy shit has got to move and we either do it by hand cart (boring), bother someone else on the other side of the shop (they dont like that very much) or leave it for the day guys. I'm one of the newer guys so not everyone is thrilled I got the bump and they didn't but I made it happen. Nobody asked me to do it, I went after it. Anyways, yeah. Me + fork truck = frendz4eva

I managed to get Linux running on my tablet today, via Termux and MultiVNC

Okay, maybe not so dull, but it was more hoops than I figured I'd have to jump through, but I finally got the basics all set up and working!

🐧

Edit: I basically followed this guide:

https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Graphical_Environment

Plus, if you don't have an external keyboard, I highly suggest the Hackers Keyboard app.

Edit 2, some semi quick testing...

  • Synaptic ✅
  • Firefox ✅
  • GIMP ✅
  • VLC ✅
  • gedit ✅
  • ghex ✅

I bought a sefety razor today

Shopping for new blades for my old razor I realized that the gel used on the blades could not be vegan. I didn't want to check online if they were vegan and as I realized that the blades for my old razor cost about the same as a saftey razor + 5 blades, I bought the safety razor.

Like it so far, was a little concerened to cut myself but slow and steady wins the raze (haha, get it...?) It leaves a tiny, tiny stubble, but maybe that is just me getting used to the new razor. What I like is that it is much easier to clean, since you can remove the blade and rinse it off or even disinfect it. Should I disinfect my blade? Dullsters on the internet, what is your wisdom?

Cockamamie Scheme #4342

My house is 112 years old. I was in my attic and soaking my shirt because it was 120° in there (I live in Florida). I thought how nice it'd be to get some fresh air in there. I thought it'd be even better if I could get that air from the (somewhat) cooler air in my crawlspace. Then I noticed the 4" cast iron pipe that was used to be the drain pipe for the house from 1915 through about 2000. The vent for that pipe runs through my attic and straight down to my crawlspace...unused and forgotten. So I cut the pipe and disconnected it from the roof and cut off and closed up any branches it had. I cut it and slapped a screen on it in the crawlspace. In the attic I put on an inline fan (6 watts) and a bit of duct to vaguely direct it around the attic. Early tests say my attic is about 7° cooler. Am I crazy?

I built a giant hoisting platform to lift a large motor into place on the top of a dust gorilla.

I'm currently outfitting a workshop in a garage space. I'm installing a dust collection system. The system will consist of steel ductwork and will be powered by a large dust collector. This collector is a beast of a machine, one of Oneida's dust gorilla models. It runs on a dedicated 230V 30A circuit and will be collecting dust from all the machines in the shop.

So far I've just been working on building out the gorilla itself. Most of the pieces were easy enough, not too heavy and easy enough to bolt together. However, the motor was another story. This thing weighs as much as I do and it needed to be lifted up eight feet in the air, over two feet, and back down a foot or so. It's a large awkward object and there are space constraints due to existing ducting and piping in the area.

This is the motor here:

The gorilla before construction of the frame. (Note the water heater for scale.)

Now, I suppose I could have done this just by rounding up four strong guys and getting a few ladders for everyone to stand on. But I really wanted to be able to place and remove the motor by myself. In case I need to service it or unclog a backup, I wanted to be able to raise or lower the motor again myself. My husband's back is recovering from a sporting injury, so I had to figure out a way to lift this motor single-handedly.

So, I decided to build a large hoisting frame around the thing. My plan was to hang an electric hoist at ceiling height. Use the hoist to raise the motor up. Use a sled on rails to slide the motor over the top of the gorilla, and then use ropes to lower it down.

I spent several days building out this lifting frame from the ground up. At the top are a set of rails allowing a sled to move horizontally along them. The sled has a hole in it to accommodate the impeller motor which sticks out several inches belong the motor housing. The geometry of all of this had to be planned for. The hoist is just a cheap ceiling hoist from Harbor Freight.

Finally, once everything was built, it was time to lift. I built a lifting bar and rigged up the motor.

I stood back, let the winch do its thing, and the whole plan worked brilliantly!

I lifted the motor to the top of the tower using the hoist. I then lowered it onto a sled. I then slid it over top of the gorilla. I did have to modify the sled to remove the front of it, but it worked out just as well.

Finally, I rigged ropes around the motor, raised it up enough to get the sled out, and then carefully, inch by inch, one rope at a time lowered the motor on to the top of the gorilla.

Finally, after several days work, it's done.

It's been a lot of work getting this all together. And I'm sure there may are probably quicker and easier methods of getting a motor up there. But again, I wanted a permanent solution that allowed me to disassemble the system in the future if I need to. But it's been really enjoyable. Also, I now have a giant hoist if I ever need anything hoisted!

Next step is the duct work build out!

Floor drain in new house wasn't draining.

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/61977521

So I dug out a full cup of gravel and silt, along with a small foam ball, a penny, and a nail.

After flushing it with water to make sure it was good and clean, it flows great.

It had a threaded plug to block the cleanout, but it wasn't the right size, and besides the threads in the cast iron are all rusted away. So I filled it with a compression plug. Seems to be working well.
