[Meta] Negativity in Comments

Recently, we merry mods have been noticing many-a-comments being in the report queue for perceived negativity (the aim of the community being to provide "a break from the incessant negativity and rage"). What actions should we do about these, if any? Do we need a newsome another-rule for this?

Here's what I think: Some skepticism and scrutiny is always quite needed knowledge—especially against information that's actually untrue/misleading—and any bars I can think of for removing negative comments would apply to reasonable skepticism as well. Thus, the mod team is asking y'all to drop some bars!

Edit

Actually, you’ve missed the mark. It’s not whining about an advancement, it’s legitimate criticism of the US health industry. He’s just saying what we all know to be true which is that regardless of technological improvements, lifesaving care will continue to be ruinously expensive for those that are able to access it and gatekept from many others.

If you have a problem with comments like these undermining celebration of scientific progress, then maybe you should think about the structural political issues that lead people to disillusionment and cynicism rather than labeling people as conspiracy theorists.

You know “big red“ voted for Trump. It’s a cute story, but I hope he gets what he voted for In the end

It’s too bad that curing patients is not a sustainable business model. Even if this did work we would only ever see it developed if you had to take it twice a month for the rest of your life in order to survive.

Edit: sorry, I just noticed this is in Uplifting News. So, let’s be optimistic. Maybe global capitalism will collapse and governments will start trying to take care of people.

Nobody said anything about ICE, we’re talking about the military known for bombing weddings in multiple middle eastern countries and then bombing ambulances when they respond.

If you have the money to commit atrocities in a dozen countries at once, you have money to spare.

That’s .world for you; complaining about Reddit while trying to recreate it exactly

It’s very sad to see hype like this. They only had 30 enrolled, this was just a safety study, and while the data looks promising, there is certainly not enough statistical power, which is why there is no approval yet.

Shame on the BBC. If you are going to quote invesigators, you should state that they have paid consultancy deals with UniQure. The same two people were equally excited about a Roche therapy years ago…

But UniCure stock went up 200% today, which is the point.

d) Comments should foster open discussion.

  1. Negativity/spreading doom and gloom in comments is currently allowed.^[2]^

New York enacts first US ban on data center construction

Cross posted from https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/45365549

New York has become the first US state to place a moratorium on the construction of data centers, The Washington Post reported. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order pausing environmental permits for large data centers (consuming more than 50 megawatts) for up to a year. That would give state officials the required time to create rules protecting the electrical grid, environment and local communities.

"New York will lead the way in creating the strongest standards in the nation for data center development, ensuring that when companies succeed because of New York, New Yorkers succeed too," said Hochul at a press conference. The order will take effect immediately and not affect projects that already have the required permits.

Sen. Warnock's ban on private equity firms buying single-family homes becomes federal law

As CBS News Atlanta previously reported, more than one in four single-family rental homes in metro Atlanta are owned by large corporate investors — more than 72,000 homes — giving the region one of the highest concentrations of institutional ownership anywhere in the United States.

Housing advocates have argued that those companies can outbid families with cash offers, reducing the number of homes available to first-time buyers while contributing to higher home prices and rents.

Warnock has repeatedly cited those trends in pushing the legislation, saying corporate investors have increasingly treated homes as financial assets instead of places for families to live.

Ten localities to launch housing projects for Agent Orange victims' children

Cross posted from https://lemmy.ml/post/49943090

[2026-07-11] Nhan Dan

Ten provinces and centrally-run cities will simultaneously launch a programme on July 15, to replace temporary and dilapidated homes for biological children of those who joined the resistance wars and were affected by Agent Orange/dioxin.

According to an official dispatch issued by the Government Office, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra commended the Ministry of National Defence and 24 localities for proactively implementing housing support for eligible beneficiaries. The programme has so far provided assistance to repair or build 1,422 homes for biological children of revolutionaries exposed to toxic chemicals who receive monthly preferential allowances and are living in temporary or unsafe housing, including 410 homes already completed, handed over and put into use.

The Deputy PM assigned the Chairpersons of the People’s Committees of the 10 provinces and cities that have yet to begin construction to urgently complete all necessary preparations and hold simultaneous ground-breaking ceremonies on July 15, for projects to build and repair homes for eligible beneficiaries. The move is aimed at marking the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947–2026).

She also instructed local authorities to conduct thorough reviews to ensure that support is provided to the right beneficiaries, used for the intended purposes and kept within state budget limits. Localities were asked to mobilise the entire political system, Party committees, administrations, socio-political organisations, armed forces, businesses and residents to contribute additional resources, accelerate implementation and ensure the programme is completed as soon as possible, thereby improving living conditions of beneficiaries.

The Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs was tasked with urging localities to reimburse funds to the For the Poor Fund before July 24, creating additional resources for the programme.

The Ministry of National Defence was instructed to review actual housing support needs in each locality and propose a detailed allocation plan for financial assistance from the For the Poor Fund.

The Ministry of Finance was asked to promptly issue guidance on principles governing central budget support for localities and to closely coordinate with the Ministry of National Defence in carrying out the programme.

New York City to become first in US to ban deceptive subscription practices

New York City has adopted a new rule that bans companies from using deceptive subscriptions to trap customers into paying for gym memberships, streaming services and other recurring charges, the city’s consumer protection office said.

The new rule, which will start on 1 October, promises hefty fines and aggressive enforcement for violators. Companies that do not provide a simple way to cancel could pay $525 per user subscription, back fees and additional fines.

The city is also targeting so-called “junk fees” that raise the final price of everything from apartments to sporting events, with a proposed rule that requires sellers to “advertise the total price for any good or service, including all mandatory additional charges and fees, up front”, according to a release shared with the Guardian.

New York would be the first US city to implement such a ban.
