Those who are old enough, do you miss these days?

Reply in thread

I don't remember how I got involved, but I somehow convinced the school that I knew what I was doing and they let me (starting as a 16 year old student in 1997) create my own elective class where I spent one period every day working with that same 20 something computer lab guy. We built the lab together, just me and this dude who just barely graduated, alone for an hour a day. We put together Frankenstein machines with parts from old busted 286s and rarely a coveted 386. I learned to set up a Novell NetWare network and throw expansion slot cover plates like shuriken.

I still remember working in that lab when the Phantom Menace trailer released online and we downloaded the .mov file (and required QuickTime 3.0 player) to view it in stunning 480x216. That's sub 240p. It looked fucking amazing.

The tax system is so complicated, most people can’t handle navigating it on their own. Most people have jobs where taxes are automatically removed from pay checks and sent to both state and federal tax agencies. However, that amount is just an estimate and once a year (or quarter) you need to file paperwork to confirm whether you over or underpaid and then you either get a rebate (without interest), or you’ll need to send in a payment to make up the difference. That paperwork has been lobbied to remain as complicated as possible so that companies like Intuit can provide services that tax payers find useful and continue to pay for. This is more complicated for business owners, both big and small.

Queen sucks

I love Queen, but (with the exception of Somebody To Love) I feel like you’ve picked out the worst and most overplayed Queen songs. If you’re open to seeing why folks like them so much, I’d suggest the following (in my order of preference):

  • Under Pressure
  • I Want To Break Free
  • Radio Gaga
  • Stone Cold Crazy
  • Killer Queen
  • Crazy Little Thing Called Love
  • You’re My Best Friend
  • Don’t Stop Me Now
  • Who Wants To Live Forever

There’s a pretty good mix in there. Some are more operatic than others. Some go pretty hard.

It's weird that I know about Johnson's Johnson long before I became aware of all the legislation that passed while he was in office:

  • Civil Rights Act
  • Voting Rights Act
  • Medicare/Medicaid
  • Food Stamps (and other social programs)
  • Immigration & Nationality Act
  • National Endowment for the Arts
  • Public Broadcasting Act (PBS/NPR)
  • various education & environmental bills

That dick got a lot done...

And also started the war in Vietnam...

Kind of a complex legacy, but holy shit that's a lot of good domestic work, ESPECIALLY for a single term president (plus the year following JFKs assassination).
