And just like when your parents were 12

Barrel pants are in too. I feel like a pirate but I guess I'll be a good consumer and get some

My high school son dresses pretty much exactly like I did at his age. The other day it was 90’s themed day at school and he was stopped in the hall to take pictures becuase his outfit was so spot on. He had completely forgotten it was 90’s day and just wore his usual attire — a nirvana t-shirt over a thermal long sleeve and a pair of jnco jeans. Kid shops for himself (summer job $$) and I crack a smile every time I see him come home with another thing that could have come from my 90’s wardrobe (except I never could afford name brands).

Give it a few more months and it'll be windbreakers and loud colors time.

clearly you're not into techno, if anything this is on the way back out

11

Yeah could have missed that. But I'm assuming more at the mall or in a school hallway haute couture.

Anything is possible! We just have to believe hard enough.

No, the 80s stay in the past where they belong

According to the episode of The Rest Is Science that I watched the other day, you can still get those sort of things :)

14 flights of stairs per day? You’re goddamn right I’m wearing skinny jeans. i’m 47, and my ass looks awesome.

I’m not really sure how to take a picture of my own ass

You know, it’s funny because I never really thought about this, but I don’t think I’ve ever owned a mirror.

I have no desire to look at myself

Is that weird?

You dont got one in your bathroom, fix your hair, check for pimples?

It's an expandable stick you attach your phone on to, so you can take pictures with the camera farther away. Some of them are pretty cool they almost look like drone shots, probably not the cheaper ones though.

Skinny/baggy breeches, and before that, pantaloons. Go back far enough and you might find clay tablets with cuniform text criticizing the youth for wearing their skirts/kilts too tight or loose.

16

Actually, with cuneiform, you might still see people talking about trousers. Pants as we know them were popularized by Persian fashion originally, IIRC (though the garment itself dates back a lot farther to the Asian steppe), and then pollinated to Europe via military expansion and practicality by Rome.

6

That's so interesting because I also have massive fabric sensitivity issues but denim is the only one that doesn't drive me crazy. So many differences between neurodivergent people.

6

God me too. Jeans are kind of my anchor point for why the rest of the world feels insane. The creases creasing any time I bend my legs. It's uncomfortable. Plenty of pants don't do that. I don't understand why people love the crease feel pants.

3

More generally it’s actually just all long pants, I hate how constricting they feel . Jeans are worse because they’re usually not stretchy at all.

I'm waiting for the generation with the boldness to overturn the system with asymmetrical jeans: baggy high rise on one side, skinny low rise on the other.

You'd like to Japanese fashion, so many creative people out there making really cool stuff, usually out of thrifted clothes.

5

I was in Tokyo in 2007 and everyone was wearing jeans under jeans. I was convinced it was going to come stateside. I don't think it was a full pair of jeans beneath an outer pair of jeans. But that's what it looked like. It seemed like the response to how extreme the trend to wear your pants sagging had gotten. Sag as hard as you want, just wear another pair of jeans underneath so you're not in your boxers.

4

You're very perceptive. I was pretty interested in the Harajuku trend in the early 2000s. I should probably check back in on Japanese street fashion.

I’m waiting for bellbottoms/flares to come back around. They were in when I was formativing and despite them never being in again since, and thus really hard to find, I never stopped wearing them because everything else sucks to me. Skinny jeans make my lower legs feel like they can’t breathe (have the exact same sensory problem with turtleneck and crew neck), and straight leg/boot cut bunch up in horribly uncomfortable ways, especially behind the knee.

Give me tight to the knee, and then big enough to cover my shoes without touching my legs ever again, please and thank you.

I'm the exact opposite, all my sensory problems are in my hips range of motion and groin, and I hate the sensation of rain / mud (or at work, bodily fluids) on the heel {especially if it's somewhat worn with hanging threads). High waist, baggy seat and crotch, and an inch or so short of skintight below the knee has been amazing.

4

I’m genuinely horrified at the thought of existing for a day in your preferences, no offense intended. I’m glad it works for you, but every single one of those features is an absolute dealbreaker for me, individually. Unless baggy means stretchy, which it probably doesn’t.

You can have all the bits I hate from my clothes.

I will say, though, I don’t have the problem you do with wet hems, because I exclusively wear knee socks made for winter sports, so nice and thick and wet-preventing. Why is that different than skinny pants? No idea, but it is.

I've been waiting for skinny jeans to come back. I don't necessarily follow trends, but looks like they might be?

9

I have texture issues, especially with fabric, denim is the only one that feels nice and the skinny ones feel like a hug. I love those and flared ones from my youth. I hope they come back soon only because they're hard to find in my size when they're not "in".

For younger trends. Skinny jeans and yoga pants were last cycle, it's big jean and baggy sweatpants time now.

As an "old person" whatever I do young people hate. So it's skinny jeans season for roughly anyone past 30. Because we killed the trend over the past few years and it's now "what parents wear".

Also another opposite, it's old person no-show sock time. If you're a young boy, it's socks up to your knees with shorts time.

2
sh.itjust.works

Looking around Lemmy I think the young lads' socks are well up past the knees and worn with a twirly skirt.

6

Lol, must be because "lads."

But now imagine the kilt is a mini, the socks are thigh high, and kitty-ears may be involved.

But what the heck let's keep the sporran, sporrans are cool.

1

I think we had fairly normal jeans for a while, now it's back to either real skinny or very wide from what I've seen.

2
sh.itjust.works

Skinny jeans are uncfomy and hard to move in. I always wear baggy jeans anyway.

6

Yeah, I swear kids moved to baggy jeans just because my old ass finally discovered Lee's Extreme Motion skinny jeans. They look like jeans but they're comfy as shit.

2

I will be the out of touch old man wearing stretchy skinny jeans one day. If I have to wear jeans, its going to be that kind. I won't go back.

6

Good thing I only wear baggy, comfortable pants anymore. I found these[1] a few years ago and by now I own 6 pairs in different materials and, except for job interviews, weddings and funerals, wear them all year round. Not an ad btw, I just really love these pants.

So, I followed your link and my wife looks over and watches for a second, then says "Are you watching videos of men's crotches?". After a moment of self reflection the only response I have is "Yep."

5

JNCO Jeans are back in style! Time to put away bell bottoms (both skinny and baggy).

4

At 39, think I’m gonna stick with baggy. I order the ones with drawstrings and little ankle cuffs. They’re my hammer pants.

3
lemmy.zip

I recently realized the kids are wearing jeans down at their knees again ffs

3

Sometimes I watch bodycam police videos and the number of people who are arrested by their own pants while running from the cops is outstanding.

3

I was actually getting too fat for my skinny jeans anyway. Just made the switch back to baggy. Loving it so far. Time to cultivate mass.

2

You know what I can't tell with what anyone means by, "baggy." Though, I think that's the autism. Like do they mean one size up? Like what's the criteria for, "baggy?". Skinny jeans, I think slim fit jeans but I like relaxed fit jeans more than anything. Slim fit jeans are job interview pants or like first week on the job pants.

Then again, I've never liked skinny jeans or slim fit, makes me feel like I'm squished, like a sausage. I like the little bit of give.

2

Recently donated one of my last pair of skinny jeans, I decided to keep two to wear with boots so I’ll never be fully free lol

2

The reason for that is explained in history of stuff. It's a mini documentary I recommend to everyone

2

I default to regular jeans, but also wear skinny. The problem with skinny jeans is my calves are big enough they can be uncomfortable. But yeah, it's important to show off my killer ass at every opportunity

2

So happy to be able to buy jeans that don't look like a cartoon character washed them again.

Skinny jeans are a crime against humanity. I'll try to buy enough jeans to last the rest of my life this time around so that when "relaxed fit" at the loosest jeans you can buy again I won't be stuck with ugly, uncomfy bullshit this time.
