Mark Zuckererg Demos New Facebook AI And It Couldn’t Have Gone Worse

The AI being hyped right now is not AI at all. It’s really important that we all acknowledge this, that the world is selling itself a multi-billion-dollar lemon: predictive text engines that have nothing intelligent about them. They’re giant sorting machines, which is why they’re so good at identifying patterns in scientific research, and could genuinely advance medicine in wonderful ways. But what they cannot do is think, and as such, it’s a collective mass-delusion that these systems have any use in our day-to-day lives beyond plagiarism.

Goddamn, a gaming outlet saying what the serious grown-up press should have been saying from the start!

yes

oat milk is an alright substitute, helped by being cheap

oat ice cream has a slightly different texture and flavor, though its harder to notice in the Ben & Jerry's

But oat butter is indistinguishable from cow butter

The Tea they destroyed was tariff-free, which hurt the organisers who were smuggling tea and charging a huge mark-up to customers

This is a critical bit that gets overlooked in the US framing of events. The taxed tea was actually cheaper than what local businessmen were charging! We didn't have a grass-roots revolution for the benefit of "we the people". It was organized and funded by the local elites, who were throwing a fit that larger overseas elites were telling them what to do.

It's not supposed to make sense...

When researchers say "observe" they actually mean "measure". And when you're working with sub-atomic particles, "measure" isn't some passive activity. It's an active thing. When you measure small particles you are applying some force upon them, changing them in some way from how they would otherwise act.

Imagine if you were tasked with measuring traffic on the other side of the planet, but you had no cameras. The only tool you had was a gigantic 30 ton, satellite-networked pendulum swinging across the highway. The only way you know if there are cars on the highway is if the pendulum thwacks into one of them. That's quantum particle physics.... I think.
