Major cities pop up around interesting geographical boundaries (like rivers) and that's also where the state lines were drawn, I'm guessing. It's why NYC is trying to get into NJ as well.

I won't let your grumpiness get in the way of my info dumping. Move along you sour blob of text.

7

Yep. Kansas City and St. Louis are both located at the confluence of 2 rivers. KC is at the Kansas-Missouri confluence, and St. Louis at the Missouri-Mississippi

Shoulda made straighter rivers

17

Oh, what might have been...

This is what the West would look like if divided into states along more natural boundaries, in this case the hydrological regions. This would have been a much more ideal way to set things up for longterm stability. Each region would be in control of its own watershed, in a region where control of water is everything.

The city itself wants to escape to be with it's other city brethren: Hoboken and Jersey City.

When your largest city is called the neighbouring state and your name is literally misery

TBF, Kansas city was named first by 4 years. Also, for the most part, Kansas isn’t really any better than Missouri

Didn’t the Missouri side of Kansas City spring up because whoring and drinking and whatnot weren’t allowed in Kansas because of puritans, so the Kansans would cross into Missouri for that?

1

No

During this time, other settlements were developing across the river on the Kansas side in Wyandotte County. Some of these small towns incorporated as Kansas City, Kansas, in 1872. By naming this town after the growing city on the Missouri side of the state line, city leaders in Kansas were able to capitalize on the success of Kansas City, Missouri. It’s also possible that the people in Wyandotte County felt that they had more right to the name “Kansas City” than the people of Missouri had.

Shhhh 🤫 dont let missouri feel any better, it deserves the hate. Also im not american but isnt missouri literally the flattest place ever? It doesnt even have mountains even tho its quite large.

  1. Kansas and Missouri are equally shit.

  2. we have the Ozark mountains, but they’ve eroded to large hills.

As a missourian(unfortunately) let me have at least a bit of feel good time.

As a former Kansan, Missouri is way way better for any urbanist. Their state government allows cities a significantly higher degree of autonomy than on the Kansas side. And they have Branson which even single-handedly would make Missouri better than Kansas.

2
Boereply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

And they have Branson

Branson has Yakov Smirnoff, I think that negates anything good about Missouri.

St. Louis essentially is another state. I love going to the publicly-funded zoo.

As an Illinoisian, I love your free zoo too.

They have a publicly funded zoo? I hope they treat the animals better. I've always wanted to visit. Thinking of taking my son next year to the TransWorld convention next year, his special interest is animatronics and Halloween, he really wants to go.

3
piefed.zip

The Zoo, Art Museum , Science Center, and History Museum are all free and publicly funded. Those are all in Forest Park which is a great place on its own. There are some exhibits you have to pay for but most things are free.

6

Sounds lovely, I'll definitely check it out and donate if we visit, I think my son would love it.

I guess Joplin or Branson would be the only other options, but I haven’t lived there in years.

KCMO does not want to be in another state, because it is far, far superior - and older than its Kansas counterpart, which oddly enough is named after it.

That’s right.

Kansas City, KS is named after Kansas City, MO

20

Yep. The Kansas River was originally named after the native Kansa (or Kaw) tribe. Then the city was named after the river. Then a while later, the state was also named after the river and the other city was named after the first city. Clear as the muddy river.

„Disappear” in a (somewhat) good way or in a “mutilated body found three years later” way?

5

Branson is a shithole tourist trap that's dead or dying.

Joplin is famous for its tornado.

those two aren't doing Missouri any favors.

How about Springfield?

My parents retired to the Ozarks 30ish years ago. Beautiful area, had a house built on the side off a mountain in the middle of nowhere (Cape Fair technically, but same difference.) I just remember Springfield being the closest city if you needed anything better than what the Walmart in Branson West could provide.

Also, Nebraska. Omaha is right on the Eastern border. The only other towns are along the interstate, spaced about a tank of gas apart.

17

the main driver of economic change and expansion has been improvements in transportation technology (note: my focus has been on 19th century history so maybe that changed in the 20th. idk, i don't study this shit anymore)

1

Because major cities sprung up along rivers. And they split states up along rivers.

5

Watched a fascinating video on why everyone in Nebraska live on the east side of the state.

We made it illegal to be homeless here btw. Not many people know that.

It's a shame too, beautiful state, people ruin it

There's good ones, but current events seem to be revealing that there are far fewer of them than I had thought.

6

There are a few very lucky small towns which are pockets of leftists in the middle of gorgeous American nature. You just have to really look for them.

3

Beautiful mountains and plains, gorgeous unspoiled rivers, four varied and enjoyable seasons, and some of the dumbest motherfuckers you'll ever meet.

Wait, so Kansas City's brilliant idea is to join fucking KANSAS!? Like...from the Dorothy tornado? Careful what you wish for, Kansas Citites.

Got halfway out of Kansas into Missouri and realized it wasn’t any better. Resigned themselves to being stuck.

11

Other way around. Kansas City, MO existed before Kansas City, KS.

7

Here in Kansas City we have much love for St louis. We just want to get out of Missouri and into a more Progressive state.

11
plateeereply
piefed.social

Same for St Louis, but we're at least driving distance from a blue state (even if southern Illinois is crazy Republican country).

7

We used to joke about how messed up and backwards Kansas was. It still is, but we used to too. But it is nice to see them starting to make some headway against the insanity. It gives hope that maybe now that we're deep in it. Missouri can find its way out eventually as well.

I lived in the Kansas City area for many years. It is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

But they do have Gate's BBQ and great blues.

Gates is pretty good. I prefer Bryant's, but the best is this hole in the wall attached to a used car dealership outside of Grain Valley that's only open Friday through Sunday, called Porkeys.

hole in the wall attached to a used car dealership

This is so often the case, but man, is there anything more disappointing than going to a hole-in-the-wall for any kind of cuisine and realizing it's still a hole in the wall because it kinda sucks?

5

For real. Many places are a hole in the wall cause they just kinda suck.

Adding to this, Porky's is not a dirty looking dingy hole in the wall. It's just small and you wouldn't expect good food to be hiding inside.

Ahh, Kansas City, where the barbecue is like Texas but a little bit worse, and the music is like Memphis but a little bit worse.... 🤣

2

Could be. Never been to Texas or Memphis. I just know they are among the few things I miss about it.

Texas bbq takes the L compared to superior KC BBQ. I've had both many times.

Also, I don't like your sauces, either.

4
wjriireply
lemmy.world

I am very sorry that something is wired wrong in your brain that makes you prefer the goopy sugarmeat that comes from Kansas City.

The sauce should be optional, and it should add a little heat.

1

Lol. Sauce is optional at both, but I'd rather have sweet and spicy sauce instead of vinegar.

4
lemmy.world

Having had samplings of both, Texas definitely has more money and a bigger population (and thus more diversity) but I've enjoyed St. Louis establishments more than Houston's on average.

2

St Louis is pretty underrated for BBQ. Stellar Hog is pretty great. Some others too but that’s my goto.

2

They should declare an armed war of secession...not from the United States...but from Missouri! Let them become the free cities of the prairies, the free cities of Kansas City and St. Louis...two new city-states on the planes!

For legal purposes, this is not an endorsement of acts of literal treason.

5

I visited St Louis for the first time recently, and oof. Yeah.

4

This is a phenomenal meme. Much better than the calorie stealing one. Not the best I've seen ofc but it's some clever observational humour. 8/10

4

Two different rivers. Kansas City is on the Missouri River, St Louis is on the Mississippi River.

7

St Louis is notably positioned near the confluence of the Missouri and Missisippi Rivers

8

This is extra funny since Kansas City border Kansas. They want so bad to leave.

No. Those Kansas kids are stuck up twats that think they're better than everyone while simultaneously forgetting they're from Kansas.

3

Look, I just wanted to use the phrase "Kansas Senpai" for a joke.

1

maybe they were started on the other side of the line/river/whatever and expanded into missourah because land is so cheap. because no one wants to exist there. i don't know if this is true or not but i have decided that regardless of history it is.

3

I really enjoyed Salem, MO. Mostly because I was in the forest or on the river 80% of the time 😂 were some really great people there too, just also very blatantly racist fuckheads there and because Salem is small, they choose to tolerate rather than shun that behavior.
